12711 Principal’s Patch During 2017, Woombye State School was provided with $168 665 as part of the statewide “Investing For Success” program that is aimed at improving the educational outcomes of students in the lower school. At Woombye State School, we used these funds in three specific areas – employment of Teacher Aides as teacher support to implement a reading support program for students throughout the school, release of teachers for year level planning and reflection meetings as well as professional development opportunities, and the purchase of additional resources to support literacy and numeracy in our school. The majority of the funds this year was used for the employment of the Teacher Aides to support students achieving below our required expectations in reading and comprehension. This is the third year of this program and each year we have achieved significant positive results. The most notable result from the three year investment to date is the amazing NAPLAN outcome our Year 3 students earlier this year. Our Year 3 students provided results that were amongst the best on the Sunshine Coast, being above the State and National average in all areas of testing. More specific results are available but in summary, many of our Prep students are now reading at or above the required reading benchmark. This is also the case for our Year 1 and Year 2 students as well. For the students who are still struggling with their reading, the support programs will continue. To achieve these results, the following financial investments were made:- Employing 3250 additional teacher aide hours to implement “Booster Reading Program” for students across school. - $96 500 Purchasing 92 TRS days to release teachers to meet with SEP Staff and Master Teacher each term to plan differentiated integrated units catering for individual students. - $38 670 Acquire additional resources to support enhancement of literacy concepts, eg. Writing, Spelling. – $33 540 Similar funding will continue into 2018 and we are looking at continuing moving forward with a similar model of providing extra support to the students in our lower school and middle school to ensure they have every opportunity to build a solid foundation in literacy and a great future. With just on two weeks remaining in 2017, preparation is well underway for 2018. This preparation includes many things from classes, staffing and required resources to ensure 2018 starts off smoothly and efficiently. On Tuesday 5 th December, students will move into their proposed new classes for 2018 for an hour. I emphasise ‘proposed’ as we plan to start next year with only 20 classes which is one class less than this year. This is due to us losing 86 Year 6 students and taking in 75 Prep students. We are currently taking in a number of new enrolments in other year levels that will possibly allow us to form 21 classes but this won’t be known until school starts next year. If classes are reorganised, it will probably affect the Years 4, 5 and 6 area. A proposed ‘Teacher List’ with their year levels will be placed in our School Newsletter in two weeks. If your child is not returning to Woombye State School in 2018 and is currently not in Year 6, please notify the Office ASAP. Dear Parents, Where has this year quickly disappeared to?

Report Cards

Teachers are busy finishing off report cards which will be sent out in week 10. It’s about this time of the year that students start asking about what marks they will get for their learning. Some eagerly hope to get an ‘A’, whilst others are disappointed if they receive a ‘C.’ Getting an ‘A’ or a ‘B’ is a great achievement but…. The Australian Curriculum sets an Achievement Standard for each learning area in each year level. The

Achievement Standard indicates a ‘C’ level. This means that every student who achieves a ‘C’ knows and understands facts, concepts and procedures and can also apply these elements at their year level standard. We often overlook the significance of a student working at their year level. Yet, the most important thing to achieve, is the ability, to do the work, you are set to do. I encourage parents to look closely at the effort mark. This mark tells a bigger story, its this mark that gives an indication long term success, it doesn’t rely on natural talent, it reflects the students willingness to listen to and act upon feedback, it show resilience and persistence.

Congratulations to all students who have worked hard throughout the year and worked to the best of their ability!

“Student Resource Scheme 2018”:- The “Woombye State School Student Resource Scheme” will continue again in 2018. The purpose of the scheme is to provide the parent/carer with a cost effective alternative to purchasing the prescribed textbooks and/or resources elsewhere, through reduced prices gained from the school’s bulk purchasing practices. This is particularly evident with enrolling in the “ABC Reading Eggs/Reading Eggspress”, “Mathseeds” and “Mathletics” Programs as well as bulk purchases of personal whiteboards and whiteboard markers, boxes of tissues, reams of photocopying paper, and USB’s. This provides up to $350.00 value for only $60.00. On Monday, 4th December “Expressions of interest” for the Student Resource Scheme will be sent home with the Student Report Cards from Prep to Year 5. Please ensure these forms are returned to school by Friday 8th December. Christmas Concert and Markets Evening:- Next Wednesday 29th November, Woombye State School will host its “Combined

Christmas Carol and Christmas Markets” evening. This promises to be a great evening where our students will once again sing along with many old Christmas favourites and to add more atmosphere to the evening, the Christmas Markets will also be on. All students are encouraged to attend and be part of their year level Christmas Carol performance and enjoy a great evening. Everyone is welcomed to attend and be part of the festivities.

Student Report Cards:- All Student Report Cards will be distributed to the students on Monday, 4th December. If you do not receive your child’s Report Card on the Monday, please contact the Office as soon as possible. Booklists for 2018:- The Class Booklists for 2018 are now available. These Booklists are available from the School Website or from the School Office. The Booklists have two preferred suppliers and their contact details listed. These preferred suppliers are as follows:- WOOMBYE NEWSAGENCY PH (07) 5442 1365 – Collection from Newsagency at 18 Blackall Street, Woombye or home deliveries available upon request. Order in person, email [email protected] or order online at www.woombyenewsagency.com.au WORK’N’LEARN – Delivered direct to homes or can be collected from our store in Kunda Park the store! Order online at www.back2school.net.au No password required! Order in person at 53 Enterprise Street Kunda Park, Ph (07) 5476 6002. New “Snack Shack” (Tuckshop) Ordering Procedures:- Flexischools is the preferred process for ordering lunches but paper bags are still accepted. Before School, students with ‘Snack Shack’ (Tuckshop) orders are to bring them immediately to the ‘Snack Shack’ (Tuckshop) counter when they arrive at school. Lunch Orders will no longer be collected in the classrooms and sent down after school starts. Lunches will still be collected by students from the ‘Snack Shack’ in class sets using the plastic boxes. At the end of the day, the lunch boxes should be back at the ‘Snack Shack’ ready for the next day. This process will begin immediately.

Collecting Students After School:- All parents collecting students from the Front Gate after school should adhere to the road rules as well as remember that the ‘Pick Up’ zone is a no parking zone. Recently, cars have parked there and drivers left their vehicle unattended. This has resulted in major disruptions to the traffic flow, causing a great build up of traffic. Parents are also reminded to have their ‘Family Name Card’ displayed on their passenger visor so that the staff on duty are able to call out names for students. Volunteers will be on duty once again in the near future to assist with the traffic flow. School Leaders Selection Process:- Selection of the 2018 School Leaders for Woombye State School is nearly complete. On Wednesday 29th November, “House Captains” and “Cultural Leaders” will be announced on parade. School Leaders for 2018 will be presented with their badges on Parade in early 2018. Students Leaving:- If your child is not returning to Woombye State School for 2018 and is currently not in Year 6, please contact your child’s class teacher or School Office now. We need these details as soon as possible to help with the balance of numbers for next years’ classes. DO YOU HAVE A SPARE BED OR TWO TO HOST SOME CHINESE STUDENTS!! 90 Chinese students will be visiting the Sunshine Coast in February next year and attending Nambour State College. I am seeking expressions of interest to homestay the students during their 7 day stay. Students are around 14 years of age. DETAILS: Group 1 4th February to 10th February (seven nights) Group 2 7th February to 14th February (seven nights) Host Families will be provided with a BusLink Go Card for them to travel to Nambour State College and return should this be more convenient and if you are close to the bus link. Students will attend (4) days of tuition at Nambour State College and (1) local tour to Sealife at Mooloolaba. Students require lunches of a day, independent bed and an Australian experience. It is not a requirement for host families to have children. If you are interested, please provide your expression of interest to me (Jenny McKay) by Friday 8th of December or for further inquiry please do not hesitate to contact me on 0409 450 726, [email protected] Regards Jenny McKay

Book Fair 2017

Thank you everyone for supporting our annual Book Fair. We raised in excess of

$1600 worth of books for our school. These books will be processed by the

library staff and will be on our bookshelves early in 2018.

The Book Fair is an exciting time with lots of fun for all the children and adults.

This has been made possible by all the people involved. I would like to thank all

the volunteers for coming in each day and helping, all the parents and students

in locating books and explaining the buying process. I would also like to thank the

admin team for all their help with the accounts.

I trust everyone enjoyed the experience.

Happy Reading

MUSIC MATTERS Music Mini-Tour Success!

On October 24, Woombye State School’s two choirs and string ensemble

went on their annual mini-tour. For the third year, the students provided entertainment for some local aged care homes- this year to Sundale in

Palmwoods and Estia Health in Nambour. A selection of music including Truly Scrumptious and Possum from the Junior Choir; All Alone in the

Universe and A Medley ‘Red Red Robin and Rockin’ Robin’ by the Senior Choir, with Frere Jacques and Ding Song by the Strings Ensemble. The

performances were finished off by the students merging with the audience, to join Mrs Roberts (on ukulele) singing “I’ve been workin’ on the railroad” and “You are my Sunshine” where the elderly were invited

to sing with us too. It was tremendous and quite a moving experience for many in the room, with singers from aged 7- 97? singing together! Palmwoods Sundale provided our students with morning tea and we finished off the tour with a trip to McDonalds to

celebrate all the hard practice and commitment! Well done everyone- a great day! I was very proud to be a part of this with our

wonderful students.

COUNT US IN:2017

On November 2, for the first time at Woombye, all students assembled in the hall to join the annual event : Count Us In, where over

600 000 students around primary schools in Australia join to sing a song written especially for the event each year by student songwriters. This year ‘Shine Together’ was enthusiastically sung by our student body at 11:30am with the live stream from Deakin

Edge in Melbourne. What a thrill this was! “Let the music take control…. find your rhythm, find your soul…lalalalalal” --all students know at least this part. We will continue this celebration of music education next year.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT and MARKETS

Next Wednesday evening, Wed Nov 29, all year groups in the school will be performing a Christmas song or two, to finish off the

year of music with joyful singing! Market stalls open at 5pm, with Instrumental groups performing from 5:45pm, with the Preps singing at 6pm, followed by Year 1, Year 2 and the combined Junior and Senior Choir. After a short break to change over

audiences, the Year 3 and 4 groups will sing, followed by another break and then the Year 5 and 6 cohorts. All students are

expected to be there- it is not an ‘opt-in’ event. Please send a note in to the class teacher if your child is not able to attend so that they are aware who will be missing – and therefore will practice and set their stage line-up accordingly. It is disappointing to find

out on the night that members of the group are not there.

STRINGS and INSTRUMENTAL (BAND)

Students in current Year 2 have been through a recruitment session to show them the strings instruments available for starting in Year 3 next year. Forms are available in the office to apply for this amazing program that the Queensland Education Department

uniquely provides. A small yearly fee plus instrument hire (or provide your own) is the only cost. (compared to private lessons at non-state schools that can cost $30-34 a week.)

After the first year of a school instrument, students are expected to purchase their own so that new students can try out on a school instrument the following year. Instrumental

(Band) applications are open for Year 4 beginners next year, plus continuing students should also complete a new form so classes can be organized. These instruments

include; flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone, alto saxophone, and percussion. If you have played a string instrument this year and used a school instrument, you will be

ineligible to use a school band instrument, unless there are still some available after the new students have been placed. Please see Mr Heymink for more information.

Thanks to all music parents for a great year- keep supporting them with practice

reminders (it is very rare for students to practice without these reminders until they are well into high school). Routine is the best and most successful way of working this in-

same time each day.
