Dear People of Grace,

What a wonderful Easter season it has been! We’ve been blessed with cooler weather and

an abundance of rain. It has been lovely to walk amongst the grounds of Grace this spring.

Our next big celebration in the life of the Church is Pentecost on June 9. Pentecost literally

means "the fiftieth day” and appears in both Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, Pente-cost refers to the Feast of Weeks which was an ag-

ricultural event lasting for a period of seven weeks that focused on the harvesting of first fruits. Jose-phus referred to Pentecost as the fiftieth day after

the first day of Passover.

In the New Testament, Pentecost refers to the coming of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1), shortly after Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension. Christians came to understand the

meaning of Pentecost as the gift of the Spirit. The Pentecost event was the fulfillment of a promise given by Jesus concerning the return of the Holy

Spirit. Speaking in tongues, considered an outward manifestation of having received the Spirit, is inter-preted by some to symbolize the church's world-

wide preaching.

In the Christian tradition, Pentecost is now the seventh Sunday after Easter. It is the time in which the Church is understood as the body of

Christ drawn together and given life by the Holy Spirit. Some understand Pentecost to be the origin of sending the church out into the world. The Day

of Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year in the Episcopal Church (BCP, p. 15). The Day of Pentecost is identified by the BCP

as one of the feasts that is "especially appropriate" for baptism (p. 312). The liturgical color for the feast is red.

Grace Episcopal Church

One God One Family One Table

Vision Grace Episcopal Church seeks to deepen relationships with God, bring individuals together into a family that builds up one another in love and support, and actively serve our neighbors and community.

Mission

In this family of faith God brings together individuals in all stages of their spiritual life to form an inclusive family. As a family, we encourage growth in relationships with God, others, ourselves, and the creation, in that we:

Practice invitation to God’s table,

Welcome and incorporate those who come,

Work together to worship the Lord in powerful liturgy,

Challenge, encourage and teach one another, and

Build one another up for ministry in and beyond the church.

Dear People of Grace: Bishop Doyle has asked us to reflect upon the blessing we have in our dear Priest-In-Charge, Suzanne, and remember that she is a product of The Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. Other churches are in need a Deacons and Priests, and would benefit from the wonderful program at The Seminary of the Southwest. As a symbol of our gratitude and blessing for The Rev Suzanne, the vestry has committed to a donation to The Seminary of the Southwest in Suzanne’s name. To meet that commitment, we ask you to prayerfully consider a giving towards this donation. You may write a check to Grace Church and put “Seminary gift” in the memo line and drop your check in the offertory plate or send it to the church office. Our goal is $3000. Together, as a parish family, we can pay it forward for other churches in transi-tion.

De George at Union Station

Veterans Food Drive

One hundred formerly homeless male and female

veterans have found a home at the De George at Union

Station in downtown Houston. This hotel built in 1913

provides each resident a small room with a bed, dresser,

desk, small bathroom, microwave, and mini-fridge. The

De George offers veterans access to a number of basic

services, such as phones, computers, copiers, etc., and

other on-site services by many area agencies including

the Harris County Health Department, VA Regional

Office, Social Security, and Houston Bar Association, to

help them transition to private housing and employment.

The De George provides an emergency food pantry for

the residents which counts on the public’s help for

restocking. Each July, Grace Episcopal Church packs

Phyllis Wall’s utility vehicle full of much-needed non-

perishable foods to help re-stock the pantry as a thank-

you to the veterans who have served our nation. Please

help fill Phyllis’ SUV once again this year by bringing

your food donations to the Parish Hall by Sunday, July 7.

The Women’s Guild will take your much-appreciated

contribution to the De George the second week in July.

Please take a list of suggested food items to help you

shop for the vets.

The Women’s Guild thanks you for your generosity!

You might be asking, what is Cursillo? Cursillo is a spiritual retreat where those who attend are given tools to become greater witness-es for Christ through Piety, Study, and Action. At its core, Cursillo is presented as a short course in Christianity, cultivated within an inviting atmos-phere, and strives to build community.

When Does The Weekend take place and where? The upcom-ing Cursillo is June 6th through June 9th at Camp Allen’s Lakeside Meeting Center: 18800 FM 362, Navasota, TX 77868 Who Can Attend? Any baptized Episcopalians are welcome to attend the weekend. How much does it cost? Participants, known as Pilgrims, pay $175. If you have any other questions, please speak with Michael Smith (Leader Cursillo #255) , Aubrey Smith, or Kati Garner. For further information and for registration, please visit: www.episcopalcursillotexas.org

Dear Grace, Annually, the Archbishop of Canterbury encourages Anglicans and Episcopalians throughout the world to pray more starting on Ascension Day, May 30th and continuing to Pentecost Day, June 9th. As a church, I would like to encourage all of us to commit to praying for the Spirit to work in a mighty way at Grace. I will pray this prayer at mealtimes, would you join me? We will join our prayers with the world for these 11 days. "Thy Kingdom Come" is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Can-terbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. During the 11 days of Thy Kingdom Come, it is hoped that everyone who takes part will

Deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ

Pray for God’s spirit to work in the lives of those they know

Come to realize that every aspect of their life is the stuff of prayer Whether you have joined in ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ before or not, I invite you to take part this year – along with churches from over 65 different denomi-nations in 114 countries around the world. Faithfully, Suzanne+

A Note from our Children’s Minister “There’s a reason I’m a musician and not an athlete.” This is usually the line I give in one of my less graceful moments tripping on my own two feet. Growing up, I was never good at sports. P.E. was the most miserable part of my day during grade school because my abilities, or lack thereof, was on full display for the entire class. Over time, I came to resent my lack of athletic abilities, mostly because I came to be made fun of for them. Upon entering sixth grade, I became a consummate band nerd to this day. Have you ever done this? Have you ever envied someone's skill set, wishing it were your own as well? What's the problem here? When we do that, we be-come too consumed with other’s gifts and talents, and not with our own God-given abilities. We are not seeing ourselves as one of the many parts necessary to the entire body. We cannot see how our little bas-ket of bread and fish would help the crowd. Which is how I imagined that little boy carrying the basket felt, when he was asked to bring what he be-lieved to be a small and insignificant contribution to the crowd. But look how Jesus made it grow! And when Martha felt Mary was doing nothing? Jesus gently reminded her that we all have a place. And when we see a hand and believe that because we are not a hand, we must not belong to the body, or since we are not an eye, we must not belong to the body, what does scripture tell us? We cannot all be an eye! We cannot all be a hand! We are different parts nec-essary to the whole body! Some are meant to do one thing, and some are meant to do another! We are each good at different things, just as God made us to be, and we all have a place! Up and Coming VBS is coming to Grace this summer for our kids going into K-6th grade on July 22nd-25th from 9-noon, and we need your help! We need a few Safe-guarded adults to be present throughout the morning. There will be a Safeguarding God's Children class coming soon if you are willing and able to help out but are not currently Safeguarded or your Safeguard-ing has expired. Please contact me at 832-621-6054 to volunteer or for more information. Aubrey Smith Children's Minister

Kairos The Kairos Prison Ministry is a faith based, lay-led, ecumenical ministry that brings the message of God’s love and Christ’s forgiveness to our incarcerated brothers and sisters throughout the world. “Kairos” is Greek for “God’s Time” as opposed to “Chronos” which is “Man’s Time”. It signifies that God is in control and will reach out to his chosen on his schedule, not ours. Our ministry is at the TDCJ Clemens Unit in Brazoria Texas near Lake Jackson, a medium security state prison housing approximately 1,100 inmates, which we call “residents”. We have about 40 volunteers who participate regularly twice each year for weekend retreats which have been modeled after the Emmaus and Cursillo Walks. A retreat has a four day, spirit-filled agenda where approximately 30 volunteers interact with 42 residents spread among seven groups we call “families.” There is a syllabus where Christianity is presented and discussed, little bites at a time. There are personal testimo-nies by volunteers which help us connect with the residents. Our motto is “Listen-Listen-Love-Love” and our message is “forgiveness and brotherly love.” While we are ecumenical, you will be pleased to know Episcopalians are well-represented. However, there is never any emphasis on our individual faiths, as we are all one in Christ. We cater to the gang leaders, the “worst-of-the-worst” and residents are always ethnically/racially balanced (by design). Weekend expenses are mostly funded by our own volunteer donations. At the end of each weekend, there is a closing ceremony that lasts about an hour and a half. The next one is Sunday November 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. It would be a great experience for you to attend a closing ceremony. Also, if you have a few minutes and want to know more, please Google “Paul Gray Prison Ministry” and watch Paul’s testimony on YouTube. The Kairos messages we bring to the prison will not reach all inmates simultane-ously, and for many, probably not on our weekend, but the seeds are planted where they can grow and mature in fertile soil. Thus, Kairos time - “God’s time - not ours.” If you

have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]. Blessings and Kind regards; Jim Thompson

Life Celebrations We’re looking for creative and nurturing individuals to help plan and support funeral service receptions. These individuals would organize food offerings, manage reception supplies, and coordinate the set up and decoration of tables and chairs in the Parish Hall. We typically host one or two receptions a year which are usually held on a weekday. If you’re interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Sherry Campbell at 281.482.6632 (H) or 979.557.7904 (C).

Consultative Council (ACC). It comprises members of the laity, archbishops, bishops, priests, and deacons. Meetings take place approximately every three years. From April 27 to May 5, 2019, this council met at the Gold Coast Hotel in Hong Kong. The General Convention of TEC selected Edward J. Konieczny, the Bishop of Oklahoma; the Rev. Canon Michael Barlowe, the Executive Officer of our General Convention; and Lay Canon Rosalie Simmonds Ballen-tine from the Diocese of the Virgin Islands, to represent us at this recently concluded meeting. The current chair of the An-glican Consultative Council is the Archbishop of Hong Kong, Paul Kwong. Next month, I will write more about the policy decisions that were taken at this meeting, and the reports which were submitted by the program directors to ACC 17. In the meantime, you can enjoy watching the Opening Eucharist service of ACC 17 from St. John’s Cathedral, Diocese of Hong Kong Island at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Zkaa02urW4 The celebrant at this service was Archbishop Paul Kwong, and the preacher was Archbishop Justin Welby. Grace Episcopal Church in Alvin is one of 169 parish churches, 80 mission churches, 64 Episcopal Schools, 21 Episcopal campus ministries, 7 Episcopal institutions, and 5 Foundations of the Diocese of Texas led by our Diocesan Bishop, C. Andrew Doyle. The Diocese of Texas is one of twelve dioceses which constitute Ecclesiastical Province VII, the Province of the Southwest. Larry Benfield, the Bishop of Arkansas, is the President of our Province. Province VII, is one of nine Ecclesiastical Provinces that forms The Episcopal Church (TEC). Apart from dioceses within the continental United States, the TEC also include dioceses and parishes as far west as Taiwan, far south as Venezuela and Micronesia, far north as Alaska, and far east as Italy. In 2017, there were 1,871,581 baptized members of our denomination under the spiritual stewardship of our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry. As of March 2019, TEC is one 40 autonomous churches (confusingly, also called Provinces) and five extra-provincial dioceses that constitute the Anglican Communion. The word Anglican originates from the Medieval Latin phrase “ecclesia anglicana,” which dates from at least 1246. It means the English Church. The Anglican Communion is one of the world’s largest Christian communities. It has tens of millions of members in more than 165 countries around the globe. The Anglican Communion is served by four “Instruments of Communion,” the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby; the Lambeth Conference (bishops who, at the time of their next meeting between July – August, 2020, will hold positions either as a diocesan, suffragan, auxiliary or assistant bishop from around the communion), the meeting of the Primates (who are the chief Archbishops, Presiding Bishops, Moderators and chief pastors of the 40 provinces) of the Anglican Communion.
