JULY/AUGUST 2014 4

I would like to begin by thanking the entire

community on the success of our Olympiad Greek

Festival! It has been a long process preparing for and

hosting our Festival, but God blessed us with beautiful

weather and amazing fellowship!

I would like to acknowledge

Gus Hatzis and Lee Tsouris, who

did a tremendous job Chairing

the Festival and along with

them , the President of our

community, Cons tantinos

Vlamis and the entire Parish

Council for their hard work over

the course of the Festival. Of

course, the highlight of our

Festival were our children who

so beautifully danced the

traditional Greek dances with

pride and love. However, we

would not have been so

successful had it not been for all

of our Organizations and

volunteers who gave countless hours to our Festival .

Finally, I want thank all of our parishioners and visitors

to our Church who came and supported us during the

Festival. My family and I had such a wonderful

experience here at Holy Trinity working and celebrating

with all of you. This year‟s Festival has solidified our

reputation within the city of Bridgeport as one of the

best in the area for our food, dancers, vendors, and most

importantly, hospitality / Philoxenia!

On June 8th, our Church celebrated the Holy Feast of

Pentecost. The following day, June 9th, was the Feast

day of our Church, which was Monday of the Holy

Spirit. On the day of Pentecost, we celebrate the

birthday of the Church. Though the Church is

established in history on this day, it has pre-existed in

the divine plan of God before creation. It is this day that

the Holy Apostles received the power of the Holy Spirit ,

which was promised to them when Christ ascended into

the heavens. Our Church celebrates the solemn Feast of

Holy Trinity because God has revealed Himself to us in

three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Icon of

our Church, the Hospitality of Abraham, is important in

understanding the theology of the Holy Trinity. It would

have been unthinkable for Abraham to reject his visitors,

as this icon depicts the relationship of host and guest as

sacred, and as forming a covenant with God.

The Orthodox Church is an icon of the Holy Trinity,

where creation is renewed and

reborn in the image of God. The

Church's mode of existence, based

on the Trinity, also symbolizes this

idea of unity in diversity. Within

the model of the Holy Trinity,

three distinct persons make up the

single God Head: Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit. Our identity as

Orthodox Christians transcends

whatever cultural and social

boundaries we may encounter in

our lives, since we are all united in

fa ith, worship, and love,

particularly in a world where

different racial, ethnic, and diverse

cultural outlooks need to be

recognized. This unity does not

mean losing our own individuality.

Rather, it means that we are created as unique

individuals made in the image of God, who is the source

of all life.

Now that the festival is over, and as you begin to fill

the calendar with summer activities with friends and

family, remember not to let our Worship fall by the

wayside! We had such a successful attendance and

fellowship during this past year, that we don't want to

forget the benefits of attending church over the summer.

Moreover, now that Sunday school is out, we don't

want our children to think that God and worship are

merely seasonal, but rather, something that is always a

part of their lives all year round. During the summer,

our children are not busy with homework and school

activities and have more time to reflect on and reinforce

what they learned about faith and worship during the

year in Sunday School. There are great opportunities for

our children to grow in their faith over the summer.

We will continue to have

services over the course of the

summer, and our Church will also

be offering Vacation Church

School during the month of

August. Please make every effort

to have your child participate in

our Church‟s Vacation Church

school.

Likewise, for most adults,

summer is also usually less

s tress ful, which can make

participation in the Liturgy even

more enhanced. Summer is a great

time to recharge spiritually. There

are many opportunities for

fe llowship and community

building. We often neglect to

think of the needy and poor when

the weather is beautiful, but we

must realize that there are still

many people who need help. You

should consider volunteering at a

local soup kitchen, or camp for

needy children.

It seems to me that our parish of

Holy Trinity has much for which to

thank God, particularly with the

success of our Festival this year,

which tells me that this is a very

strong, faithful, and loving

community of which my family

and I feel very blessed to be a part.

I pray and hope that the Triune

God continues to bless you and

your families. I look forward to

seeing you throughout the summer

months, and look forward to

spending another year together.

Have a blessed summer!

Dad—For when Mom says “no.”

A s we finished with all the preparations - setting up

all stations, outside tents, gym, and Aegean room -

all that was left was for the weather to cooperate so that

we could have a successful Olympiad festival. As the

day progressed on Friday, the first day of the festival, it

appeared that the day was only going to be moderately

successful. With the evening rain, the rush and dinner

hours seemed like they were going to be mediocre .

And they were. The good thing was that there was a

feeling of calm amongst everyone.

As the weekend went on, the weather turned out to be

beautiful, and we ended up having one of the busiest

festivals yet. Regardless of the weather, though, the

most important ingredient to our success was the help

and participation of all of our parishioners who came

together and created a great place to gather, and who

promoted our biggest fundraiser, with dedication, enthu-

siasm, and perseverance.

So, thank you so much for all of your hard work.

Most of all, I would like to thank Chris Papachristos for

being my right hand, and Gus Hatzis and Lee Tsouris

for their wealth of experience that helped to make eve-

rything run smoothly.

Recently, we held both our Greek and Sunday school

graduations, while our 8th grade Greek school students

prepare to take the Greek Regents Exam. Good luck to

all of them. As for the rest of the students, Kai tou xro-nou!

Congratulations to ka Eleni for tolerating our kids in

Greek school for the past 30 years! May you “hundred”

them.

As for Sunday school, on June 15th, we held a lunch-

eon in honor of Miss Eva. Our PTO set up the hall and

our GOYAns served the food. The hall was decorated

very nicely, and Miss Eva had family visiting from all

over.

As the year came to an end, we had a meeting with

the Council of Churches. Most leaders of our organiza-

tions attended and met with the representatives. We dis-

cussed a project that we want to adopt. It is a project

that will involve growing outside of our Holy Trinity

perimeter, which involves helping people in the North

End of our city. All of our organizations, unified, will

take part and try to participate in reaching out and devel-

oping a relationship and alliance with Park City Com-

munities / Trumbull Gardens and create a variety of

events that will help teach different skills. We are hav-

ing our first event on September 8th , and then the se-

cond Monday of every month. With that said, I would

like to wish everyone a wonderful summer.

T his our last column before

summer vacation starts. I still cannot believe it. On a

personal note, I had a really fun

time serving as PTO president. I would like to thank everyone

who participated in any way this year. Any time given was

deeply appreciated!

I would also like to thank our past board members who have

served on the PTO board: They we re Syl via Bal , Fa ye

Demestihas, Bessy Tsilfides,

Vicky Hasiotis, and Eleni Limberis. Thank you!

Our 2014-2015 Executive

Board is: Effie Vlamis-President, Anna Papanikolaou-

Vice President, Irene Manalis-

Recording Secretary, Maria Gountas-Treasurer, Sophie

Hallas-Corresponding Secretary, and Crissy Hasiotis-Historian.

Our Board Members are: Faye

Demestihas, Bessy Tsilfides, Jennie Robokos. Good luck and

here‟s to another amazing and busy year.

Congrat ulat ions to the

graduating classes of the Sunday School and Greek School. Good

luck to you!

I cannot thank the women and

children of the PTO and GOYA

enough for their support during this year‟s annual festival.

Indeed, it is a lot of work, but having everyone‟s help makes

things run a little smoother. And

what better way to help our church raise funds?

Our next PTO column will be in August. Emails will be sent

out for PTO information,

volunteer sign ups for upcoming year.

A nother Ecclesiastical Year is over,

and it is time for the Ladies of

Philoptochos to relax a little bit and

gather some energy for next year‟s important

work. There are probably many of you who

do not know the extent of the great and hard

work that is done by our Ladies.

Besides cooking and baking for the big Holidays, we

prepare and deliver food baskets for the Evergreen Net-

work, which is an organization for victims and families

affected by AIDS. We also give food bags to the Food

Bank, and prepare meals for 200-250 people at the Res-

cue Mission, or give them the food items so that they

can prepare the meals themselves. During the Holidays ,

we prepare and give baskets to people in our own com-

munity, and we send cookies to those who live in nurs-

ing homes or are sick in hospitals.

To our beloved Church, we donate thousands of dol-

lars that we earn from Makaries, Wine and Food Tasting

events, memorials, Festival T-shirts, Coffee and sup-

plies, and the sale of pastries, including loukoumades,

spanakotites, tiropites, etc... at the Festival. We also do-

nate cash to the National Philoptochos, District Philopto-

chos , the Archidiocese, the Ecumenical Patriarchate,

St. Basil‟s Academy, the National Greek Relief Fund,

Social Service/Cancer Fund, Autism Assistance, OCMC/

All of the above are accomplished by the Ladies of

Philoptochos who work very hard, with remarkable ded-

ication, throughout the entire year. I would like to thank

all those Ladies who work tirelessly, taking up their pre-

cious family time, to help on a variety of projects and

Our Lord Jesus Christ is

Transfigured

O ur Lord Jesus began to tell His

disciples that He must go to

Jerusalem and suffer many things.

After six days, Jesus climbed to

the top of a mountain with Peter,

James, and John.

Then, Jesus was transfigured. His

face shone like the sun, and His

clothes became as white as the light.

The prophets, Moses and Elijah,

appeared next to Jesus.

Peter was so happy that he said to

Jesus, “Lord, it would be good to

stay here forever.”

Then, as he was speaking, a cloud

covered them and they heard a voice

saying, “This is my beloved son, hear Him”.

We celebrate this event on August 6th.

The Dormition of the Theotokos

A fter Pentecost, Panagia remained in Jerusalem to

strengthen the first Christians in their work while

the Apostles travelled to faraway places to spread the

teachings of Christ.

When Panagia was about 59

years old, she died and the Apos-

tles gathered together from their

distant lands in a miraculous way.

They came together at Gethsemane

to bury Panagia.

The Apostle Thomas arrived

late , and he was led to Panagia's

tomb, but when they opened the

tomb, Panagia's body was not there.

Tradition says that our Lord Jesus

Christ lifted up Panagia to heaven.

These events are celebrated in our Church on the 15th August. Sub-

mitted by Vicky Andriotis - source: Greek Orthodox Archdi-

ocese of Australia

I n the

icon of the Transfiguration,

above, Jesus stands in the middle.

His right hand is raised in blessing,

and He is holding a scroll in His left

hand. Did you ever notice the let-

ters in Christ's halo? In Greek they

mean "The One Who is."

As shown with the

labels on this icon, Eli-

jah and Moses are at the

top of the mountain,

while the three Apos-

tles, James, John, and

Peter are below Him.

Notice their expressions

and their body language.

This is to show us how

dramatic and how in

awe and amazed they

were by the vision of

Christ being Transfig-

ured. Can you spot this

icon in or Church? While facing the

Altar, look to the right of the dome!

In the icon showing the Dor-

mition (below), Jesus is standing

behind the Theotokos, who is lying

on what is called a “bier.” Jesus,

Who is her Son, has come to take

her soul into

heaven; The baby dressed in white ,

who is being held by Jesus, is how

we show that His Mother‟s soul is

“spotless” (totally clean), and is

being taken up by Him.

On both sides of the Theotokos

are the Apostles. The group on the

left is led by St. Peter

who stands at the head

of the bier and is hold-

ing a censer. The group

on the right is led by

St. Paul who stands at

the foot. You can see

Icons of the Feasts

JULY/AUGUST 2014 13

O ur Lord had

spoken to

His disciples

many times not only concerning His Passion, Cross, and

Death, but also concerning the coming persecutions and

afflictions that they themselves would endure. Since all

these evils were near at hand, but the enjoyment of good

things which they hoped to receive in their stead was yet

to come, our Savior desired to give them full assurance,

evidently and openly, concerning that glory which is pre-

pared for those who endure to the end. Therefore, ful-

filling that which He had promised shortly before, that

"there be some standing here which shall not taste of

death, till they see the Son of man coming in His King-

dom" (Matt. 16:28), He took His three foremost disciples

and ascended Mount Tabor, where He was transfigured

before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes

became white as the light. Suddenly, together with this

dread and marvelous effulgence of light, there appeared

those pinnacles of the Prophets, Moses and Elias, who

spoke with the Lord Jesus concerning His saving Passion

which was about to take place. Standing before Him as

reverent servants, they showed that He is the Lord of

both the living and the dead, for Moses came forth from

Hades, having died

many centuries before,

and Elias, as it were

from heaven, whither he had been taken up while yet

alive. After a little while a radiant cloud overshadowed

them and out of the cloud they heard that same voice

which had been heard at the Jordan at the Baptism of

Christ, testifying to the Divinity of Jesus and saying:

"This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased;

hear ye Him" (Matt. 17: 5).

Such are the marvels, truly worthy of God, celebrated

in this present feast, which is an image and prefiguring

of the future state of the righteous, whose splendor the

Lord spoke of, saying: "Then shall the righteous shine

forth as the sun" (Matt. 13:43). It is because of this that

the Kontakion of this Feast is said daily (when there is

not a great feast) in the Service of the Typica in perpetu-

al commemoration of the glory that will be the lot of the

Saints. According to tradition, the Lord's Transfiguration

came to pass forty days before His Crucifixion; this is

why the Transfiguration is celebrated forty days before

the Exaltation of the Cross. Submitted by Vicky Andriotis—

Holy Transfiguration

Commemorated On August 6th

C oncerning the Dormition of

the Theotokos, this is what

the Church has received

from ancient times from the tradi-

tion of the Fathers. When the time

drew nigh that our Savior was well-

pleased to take His Mother to Him-

self, He declared unto her through

an Angel that three days hence, He

would translate her from this tem-

poral life to eternity and bliss. On

hearing this, she went up with haste

to the Mount of Olives, where she

prayed continuously. Giving thanks

to God, she returned to her house

and prepared whatever was neces-

sary for her burial. While these

things were taking place, clouds

caught up the Apostles from the

ends of the earth, where each one

happened to be preaching, and

brought them at once to the house

of the Mother of God, who in-

formed them of the cause of their

sudden gathering. As a mother, she

consoled them in their affliction as

was meet, and then raised her hands

to Heaven and prayed for the peace

of the world. She blessed the Apos-

tles, and, reclining upon her bed

with seemliness, gave up her all-

holy spirit into the hands of her Son

and God.

With reverence and many lights,

and chanting burial hymns, the

Apostles took up that God-

receiving body and brought it to the

sepulchre, while the Angels from

Heaven chanted with them, and

sent forth her who is higher than the

Cherubim. But one Jew, moved by

malice, audaciously stretched forth

his hand upon the bed and immedi-

ately received from divine judg-

ment the wages of his audacity.

Those daring hands were severed

by an invisible blow. But when he

repented and asked forgiveness, his

hands were restored. When they

had reached the place called Geth-

semane, they buried there with hon-

or the all-immaculate body of the

Theotokos, which was the source of

Life. But on the third day after the

burial, when they were eating to-

gether, and raised up the artos

(bread) in Jesus' Name, as was their

custom, the Theotokos appeared in

the air, saying "Rejoice" to them.

From this they learned concerning

the bodily translation of the Theoto-

kos into the Heavens.

These things has the Church re-

ceived from the traditions of the

Fathers, who have composed many

hymns out of reverence, to the glo-

ry of the Mother of our God . Submitted by Vicky Andriotis—

about our Hellenic culture and heritage; campers will learn how to Greek dance, acquire interesting facts about

Greek culture, and learn how to prepare popular Greek dishes. In the afternoon, our campers get to enjoy

beautiful Bantam Lake; tubing, blobbing, jet skiing, swimming and sliding as well as other fun activities. Each evening, our campers participate in a unique and fun activity ranging from Camp Olympics to a campfire com-
