NEW: as of this Pre-Order List, we’ve chosen to separate the different types of Phalaenopsis into their very own sections to make finding the type of Phalaenopsis you like much easier:

Phalaenopsis Categories are now divided into:

PHAL SPECIES:

Most of these Phalaenopsis species are from Taiwan & reflect much improved forms & colors, having been sibbed or selfed using very select parents. Species like Phal. bellina, violacea, venosa, speciosa, gigantea and javanica are extremely slow to

reach maturity & can be easily lost as small seedlings so we’re only offering well-established Near Blooming or Blooming Size plants. As a result of their extra years to reach maturity, the pricing on these plants is higher than is usual for quicker

growing & more readily available Phal. species.

PHOTO NAME & DESCRIPTION SIZE PRICE

Phal. aphrodite subsp. formosana ‘A09001’ (4N)

(TETRAPLOID FORM of Species)

A dynamite sibbing of this favorite of all

Phal. species ! This population is a tetraploid form, producing more compact leaves and much larger beautifully round flowers with great substance, producing

a long-lasting display with a much smaller footprint than is typical for the species. Gracefully cascading spikes

make for a stunning display !

Note: We just won the IPA Best Phal in Show Trophy when we displayed this

plant with its long cascading & beautifully arranged inflorescence !

Phal. bellina ‘Red Apple’ x self

(FRAGRANT Species)

This particular selfing of ‘Red Apple’ was made to achieve fuller rounder waxy fragrant flowers carrying an intense

flush/blush over all its segments ! ‘Red Apple’ was specifically chosen for its red,

rather than pink, flush, creating a stunning contrast against the creamy

white flowers. Although slower to reach flowering size than many other Phal.

species, it’s more than worth the wait for its fragrance alone in addition to giving us a beautiful presentation during the

hotter months of the year !

We are releasing each plant of this clone as it flowers to assure they were labeled correctly since we did discover that one of this group, so far, was actually Phal.

Matthew Chen (a bellina hybrid with similar leaves & spike habits).

Phal. japonica ‘Minmaru’

(Species - formerly known as Sedirea japonica)

Although the photo doesn’t show it very well, this particular clone of the fragrant

Phal. japonica species has extremely small round foliage while still bearing flowers as large as the more common

form ! When in full bloom the flowers can literally dwarf the foliage.

Phal. speciosa/tetraspis ‘MS#1’

(Red color form of Species)

The taxonomists still cannot necessarily agree on the differences between Phal.

speciosa & Phal. tetraspis so we’ve noted both for this particular clone ! Both this clone and that of fma. imperatrix ‘Red’

flower with solid red fragrant waxy flowers on gently arching to pendulous

inflorescences from spring to winter. Even when the initial flowers have faded,

the still green spike will continue to produce and add more buds while at the same time producing an additional spike or two. The red expressed in the flowers is light and temperature dependent with cooler brighter winter conditions giving the most vivid red color. This clone was

selected for its evenly balanced segments, making a perfect circle within

all its tips, not to mention its intense solid red color !

Phal. speciosa fma. imperatrix ‘Red’

(Deep Red color form of Species)

Like the clone ‘MS#1’, detailed above,

this also could be either Phal. speciosa or tetraspis depending on which

taxonomist you talk to ! The flowers on this clone tend to have a little less blue in

their red color, but that again can vary with the time of year at flowering. Makes

sense to simply have one of each !

Phal. venosa ‘KF’ (Select dark clone of Species)

This is an exceptionally dark & select

clone of this species ! Beautiful glossy green undulating leaves with cascading spikes around 5-7” long. In nature this

species grows wet all year so fertilize and keep moist year round. Previously

flowered spikes can continue to add buds in addition to new spikes emerging so

don’t remove older spikes until they turn brown. A summer into fall bloomer !

PHALAENOPSIS HYBRIDS

Most of these clones are the result of cutting-edge Taiwanese breeding programs & are plants we’ve hand-selected from some of the most forward thinking nurseries during our annual trips to Taiwan to judge their TIOS Orchid Show.

PLEASE NOTE: With many of the harlequins & the red or orange novelties, differences in light & temperature at various times

of the year will cause some variation to occur in the flower color and/or intensity of their markings. Under warmer temperatures & more shaded conditions in the summer, many red novelty-type hybrids with yellow or orange in their breeding background will flower showing more of the influence of those colors. Under cooler temperatures & brighter light in the fall to

winter months, the red pigment in the flowers is more strongly expressed resulting in solid to nearly solid red flowers.

Also, many hybrids with a heavy Harlequin influence will show their boldest and most vivid colors when bloomed under cooler temperatures & brighter light during the fall & winter.

In addition, many of the Novelty-type hybrids with Phal. bellina and/or violacea in their background improve in color intensity

and size with fuller form on their 2nd

& 3rd

flowerings, as do the actual species parents.

MULTI-FLORAL MINIATURES (including Harlequin & Peloric Multi-floral Minis):

PHOTO NAME & DESCRIPTION SIZE PRICE

Phal. Chia E Yenlin ’LHB08’

(Sogo Yenlin x Formosa Cranberry)

A stunning harlequin-influenced multi-floral miniature ! Its flowers are heavily suffused with harlequin spotting fusing to a dark rich burgundy (darker than our

photo shows) covering most of the flowers, leaving just a charming pink

picotee as a halo around its segments. This particular hybrid also has very attractive silvery-green foliage as

opposed to the traditional dark green leaves of many miniatures. And as first bloomers they’re already rewarding us

with 2-3 compact spikes, with those that were just cut back already spiking yet

again !

Phal. Formosa Blackberry ’G781’

A charming multi-floral mini with a touch of each one of its parents ! Carrying the multi-mini branching habit & flower size of the candy-stripe Sogo Vivien parent, it

also has the harlequin accents from Happy Mark, a Golden Peoker hybrid.

And adding an additional accent to these flowers, it has a rich rosy-red lip with

flattened side-lobes to create a “big lip” appearance. These have produced

amazingly floriferous double spikes as first bloomers in just 3” pots !

Phal. Formosa Cranberry ’Wilson’

We love the way some of the peloric

multi-floral miniatures show off with their vivid colors and multitudes of flowers on

branching spikes ! Beautifully flat and charmingly wavy petals are heavily

accented with bold harlequin blotches centrally making a fabulous display on

readily branching spikes. Added to that are its beautiful silvery-green leaves

which grow in a more upright habit, thus taking up less growing space. Who could

ask for anything more ?

This particular cross has just been released by OX Nursery so doesn’t even

have a hybrid name yet ! A complex hybrid, bred to create the next generation

of multi-floral miniature yellows, it combines two midi-size parents with

multi-floral minis and miniature harlequins in their background. The

result has been a floriferous non-fading yellow midi, its flowers about 6.8cm (2.5”), accented with a bold red lip &

kissed with a white heart. Great substance coming from both parents

assures a bright & long-lasting display of sunshine !

influenced multi-floral mini pod parent, Phal. Taisuco Micky, this new mini carries the super thick waxy flower

substance, rich color & light fragrance from its pollen parent, Phal. bellina !

Thick & super compact leaves allow it to be tucked easily into any collection. A

real eye-catcher which spikes for us almost immediately after removing

previously flowered spikes, meaning twice a year flowering. It can also

continue to form buds on previously flowered still green spikes in addition to

producing new !

Ann Diamond, a rich pink multi-floral, brings floriferousness to this hybrid while Sogo Golden, a waxy yellow

novelty flower, adds its heavy substance, also giving the flowers their beautiful

sunset/salmon color. As with many of this type of breeding, cooler

temperatures & brighter light produce an even more intense flower color. A

Phal. Kenneth Schubert ‘Wilson’

(pulcherrima var. champornensis x violacea fma. coerulea)

Multitudes of coerulea-flushed multi-floral miniature flowers are enhanced with darker coerulea splash-flaring on their petals due to the champornensis

form of Phal. pulcherrima that was used in this re-make ! And true to both

parents, it will continue to add buds to its spikes, creating a long-lasting display.

(Unfortunately the photo doesn’t begin to show the intensity of the splash-flaring is

on its petals nor did it truly capture the “blue” of the flowers!) Finished with a

rich dark coerulea lip, these young plants in just 2.5” rose pots have already

produced two spikes. When we saw the mother plant, it was overflowing with 6

branching spikes, creating quite a show !

Capable of producing multitudes of branching spikes for an amazingly

floriferous presentation ~ and they are now spiking again in just 2 months,

meaning twice a year flowering at the least. The charm of this particular clone is that the petals & dorsal sepal are pink

color seen from across a large greenhouse in Taiwan, we really loved its wonderfully compact leaf span and spike height ~ all in perfect proportion to each

other. Phal. Nobby’s Amy gives this novelty hybrid a better more floriferous display while the pod parent, Tying Shin

Tarzan, brings its brilliant color and heavy substance to the clone.

PLEASE NOTE:

We recently removed these near blooming size plants from their flask & have potted them up

Another exciting “find” at the 2018 Taiwan Show ! This little hybrid is hard to find so we hand-carried these plants back to the US bare-root, & they’re now

thriving in their new pots. A great compact leaf span & spike can produce an abundance of yellow-green full-form

waxy miniature flowers. Due to its breeding background we have found

these grow best under lower Phalaenopsis light. And the green expression in their flowers is more evident when flowered under cooler

BIG LIP HYBRIDS:

Phal. OX Happy Honey Moon ‘OX1749’

(OX Happy Girl x OX Crescent)

Top quality “big lip” harlequins are

difficult to find, especially when they carry a solid contrasting “big lip” to set

the whole flower off ! This particular clone produces generous cascades of

8cm (3”) flowers showing the influence of its pollen parent for the bold solid-

colored lip and its pod parent for the harlequin influence on its petals and

accenting the lip. Its lip is tucked right into the flower, leaving no gap between it & its lateral sepals. Too often we’ve seen this line of breeding show a “big lip” that

drops way down before opening out, making for an awkward and unpleasing presentation when the lip should be the focus. And we do love this solid dark

pink lip with a white picotee & harlequin moustache which contrasts boldly against the white background of its

flowers !

A sensational new color form of this very

clone ‘DT168’ of Phal. Dragon Tree Eagle. He commented that it will flower

differently depending on light and temperature, with lower light and higher

temperatures producing flowers with more of their yellow background showing ~ and lower temperatures and higher light

in the cooler months would produce flowers more like the clone ‘Red’. We have yet to flower them during both seasons so we’re just sharing this

SELECT ONE-OF-A-KIND NOVELTY SEEDLINGS (to be posted as they flower):

Many of our novelty or select seedlings are flowering for the first time for us this summer ~ and with Phal. bellina in the background of many, as first bloomers they will initially produce only 1-3 flowers on their first spikes. This particular type of breeding is extremely slow to grow to maturity due to the heavy influence of the waxy Phal species in their background. For

Page 30: the orchidPhile - Wild Apricot

this line of breeding we leave any still-green spikes on the plants since they will most likely add more buds to these spikes in addition to producing new spikes at their next flowering. Some people choose to remove the initial spikes & give the energy back to the plant. However, we’ve never noticed (with this line of novelty-type breeding) that it makes much difference in the overall vigor of the plant since their breeding background carries the tendency to retain older spikes. Also, with this kind of breeding, flower form, color and size improve enormously with their 2

nd & 3

rd flowerings. But ~ the real bonus to owning a

One-of-a-Kind plant is that you can give it your own clonal name !

FRAGRANT MINIATURE CHINESE CYMBIDIUMS:

All the species listed below grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & WARMER temperature

conditions since they are miniature growing Chinese species, requiring much lower light, less space & will grow under warmer temperatures than their larger cousins ~ they also don’t require the extreme chill of standard Cymbidiums in order to make their flower spikes and all tend to flower more than once a year, having no definite flowering season. One of these clones, ‘Tian Cao’, is just 6” in height – perfect for windowsill & under-lights growing !

We are particularly fond of the green & yellow flowering varieties with either delightfully compact or elegantly tall flower spikes. We’ve found that the traditional pale pink-burgundy colored flowers are just too muddy to stand out and make a statement.

The clone ‘Tian Cao’ also has the added charm of VARIEGATED FOLIAGE, meaning it’s attractive, even when not in flower ! Variegated foliage comes at a higher price because it’s greatly prized in Japanese & Chinese cultures, meaning the stronger the variegation, the more expensive the clone.

All these species & hybrids grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & temperature conditions since they are miniature growers, requiring much lower light than their larger-growing & flowering cousins. In the winter we slip these little baskets into rose pots to allow the roots to continue to grow down from the basket, our own approach to “collaring” that Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids does with his plants in clay pots. We have been amazed at how easy to grow this Habenaria species has been ! Even

when not in flower, their foliage is beautifully marked. We’ve found that if we keep them just slightly moist with a light

spritzing, not wet, when they go deciduous, they produce their spring growths readily. Allowing them to dry

more than challenging, so we’ve switched to growing them in moss. This population
