The emphasis of this program will be financial planning for the young engineer, recent graduate

or college student. This interactive event is to help you emerge from your college years (or

early working years) debt-free. Here are a few questions to ponder:

1. How to start investing or save money when you are broke?

2. How to save if you have to pay back student loans?

3. Do I really need to invest in a 401K? Are there better plans?

4. How aggressive do I need to be in "planning for the future"?

5. How can I maximize employer contributions?

6. Why should I care about any of this at this time in my life?

No admission fee, but RSVP is required by March 18, 2015. Food w ill be served.

Please indicate dietary needs/restrictions.

Parking IS NOT FREE, and normal meter rates apply. (Parking has become a challenge lately at ODU, especially between 10am and 4pm, and no free parking is available.)

Elkhorn parking garage is recommended since it is closest to the building in which the meeting will take place. However any visitor parking may be used as shown on this webpage: https://www.odu.edu/about/visitors/parking-information.

The Open Channel – March 2015 2

From the Chair Dear IEEE Colleagues,

We began the month with a well-attended Swisslog Logistics presentation and tour held on February 12th. Attendees braved the snow and were rewarded with an overview of the company's organization with an emphasis on warehouse and automated material handling solutions. Demonstrations of the SmartLIFT (smart Labor, Inventory and Forklift Tracking System), customer control center, and the Hybrid Automated Guided Vehicle Systems were followed by a Swisslog-sponsored dinner.

In support of National Engineers Week (February 22 through February 28), Jeff Hazen and I will be attending the Engineering New Horizons Luncheon hosted by the Department of Engineering at Norfolk State University on February 24th. We will be special guests of the department, along with representatives of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) as Mr. Kennon Outlaw, a retired faculty member and generous contributor of an Engineering Scholarship to Norfolk State University is honored.

I will be joining the Norfolk Granby Girls in Engineering on March 10th as they participate in the Suborbital Rocket, Fabrication and Testing Facility, and Wallop's Island Driving Tour. Mary Ellen Randall, Region 3 IEEE Director, her husband , Grayson Randall (2015 IEEE Eastern North Carolina Section Chair) and Janet Rochester (IEEE Senior Member, IEEE Professional Communication Society Member, former President of the IEEE-SSIT Society on Social Implications of Technology and Life Member) are amongst some of the invited special guests.

A student financial seminar at ODU is scheduled for March 25th and is open to area college students. This function will be held at Old Dominion University in the Engineering & Computational Sciences Building, 1st Floor, Presentation Auditorium at 6 PM. Student attendees may register here: https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/32895

We will have our next Section Meeting on March 26th at Clark Nexsen (4525 Main Street, Virginia Beach, VA 23462), where featured speaker Kurt Clemente will present "An Electrical Forensic Case Study." You may register for this event here: https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/31783

Special Announcements

1. January 29th, we received word that our own William LaBelle will be honored at SoutheastCon 2015 (Ft. Lauderdale April 9-12) as the Region 3 recipient of the Outstanding Service Award. I'm sure we all agree this is long overdue. The Hampton Roads Section appreciates the many hours Bill gives to support our community.

IEEE-USA launches new flagship publication, IEEE-USA

InSight, new Shop site

IEEE-USA has launched a new flagship publication, IEEE-USA InSight [http://insight.ieeeusa.org/]. IEEE-USA InSight represents the merger of IEEE-USA’s two award-winning publications: Today’s Engineer and IEEE-USA in ACTION. IEEE-USA InSight will continue to bring you the same thought-provoking and insightful content that you’ve become accustomed to receiving from IEEE-USA—careers, public policy, and news and announcements from IEEE-USA—in one comprehensive publication.

The current IEEE-USA InSight home page features stories on the portrayal of engineering and technology in pop culture, the rise and fall of the fax machine, and why IEEE-USA President Jim Jefferies thinks this is a great time to be a US IEEE member.

The publication launch coincides with the debut of IEEE-USA’s new Shop site [http://shop.ieeeusa.org/, where IEEE-USA E-Books are discoverable and available for purchase. IEEE members will find it easy to use their IEEE Web accounts to add products to their IEEE Xplore shopping cart.

Directions: Old Dominion University

Use one of the links listed below to derive the best route to the meeting. We will be meeting in the Engineering & Computational Sciences Building (ECSB). Check ODU’s interactive map at http://www.odu.edu/about/visitors/campus-map.

2. Jimmy Higgins has relinquished his position as IEEE/PES chair for 2015. If we don't have a volunteer for this position by May 15th, we will disband this PES chapter.

3. Dr. Demetris L. Geddis of Norfolk State University will represent the Hampton Roads Section at SoutheastCon 2015 in Fort Lauderdale, FL

4. We are seeking a volunteer to be the liaison between the SoutheastCon 2016 Steering Committee and the Hampton Roads Section. This will require attending the meetings (face-to-face) or via WebEx and report back.

December was the official end of the 2014 membership year, though we allow a two-month grace period until the service deactivation occurs. Membership service deactivation occurred February 21st, which means all members who have not renewed for 2015 will have their benefits and services deactivated. Please reach out to colleagues and students who have not renewed. Finally, we have a 2015 recruitment campaign that builds on the existing Member-Get-A-Member program.

Higher-grade members in the US are eligible to submit referrals through a special online form. Beginning in March, new members are eligible to join at the special half year dues rate. For each successful new recruit, the referring member can select and IEEE-USA branded merchandise item, including a hat, cooler, backpack, golf balls, pen sets, solar charger, tablet case, umbrella and more. Click here to review the Member-Get-A-Member program and to download referral cards: http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/join/mgm.html

A Living Resume A Living Resume is a three-part story by Harry T. Roman that describes what you should document as your professional life develops.

The tone within is conversational, shaped by 36 years of business experience, designed to make you think carefully about what you have done in your career; and exploring how you will set it down in a logical and powerful manner. Someday, you may need a compendium of your career to help you keep your job, or perhaps secure a new one. Volume 1 discusses how to go about documenting your career accomplishments.

Volume 2 emphasizes realizing the power your writings, awards and honors. Author Harry Roman advises documenting them in your living resume - not sweeping that powerful information into a corner. Further, he explains that such documentation should be carefully itemized and detailed. After all, companies like to see what characterizes the professional side of the engineers they will hire.

In the final book of the A Living Resume trilogy ventures into Professional Service, Community Service, and Consultancies. Every company likes to have well-rounded folks working for them, people who are vital elements of their communities—walking billboards for your company’s reach and concern in the community. Companies take pride in employees involved in many different aspects of community, and also encourage involvement in local community projects and activities. Such activities are another rich source of information for your living resume. Get involved in the various activities that bring you into contact with the greater world outside your company. Give back to your community, and it will come back to you with great reward, when you least expect it.

Each e-Book edition is $7.99 for members or $9.99 for non-members. You need an IEEE Web Account to receive the IEEE member discount.

These and other e-books are available form IEEE-USA at http://www.ieeeusa.org/communications/ebooks/default.asp.
