The Olympic Games

Beginning in 776 BC, the first ancient Games were held in the Valley of Olympia in Greece .

Sportsmen competed in running, wrestling, jumping, throwing the discus ,chariot races.

The Games were held over five days.

Thanks to Baron Pierre de Coubertin the Modern Olympic Games have been organized since

1896.

The first Winter Olympic games took place in 1924, in Holland. They take place every four

years.

The XXII Summer Olympic Games were held in Moscow, in 1980. At the Games 5000 athletes from

80 countries took part in 21 different sports.

The Olympic motto is :” Faster, Higher, Stronger”.The Olympic creed is: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part”.

The winners of the Olympic Games receive gold, silver and bronze medals.

The XXX Summer Olympic Games were held in London in 2012. The mascots of the Games were

two drops Winlock and Mandeville.

On the 27 th of July 2012 the Opening Ceremony was organized in the Olympic Stadium.

12500 sportsmen from 205 countries competed in 31 different sports.

The next Winter Olympic Games will take place in Sochi in 2014.
