THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH

When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. ~John 19:30

APRIL 9, 2017 PALM SUNDAY

GATHERING IN THE COURTYARD

RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL

Some traditions ring “Sanctus Bells” to call worshippers’ attention to “the holy.” (Sanctus means “holy” or “sacred.”) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us.

THE GOSPEL READING OF JESUS’ ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM Matthew 21:1-11

THE INVOCATION ANTHEM Ride Through Jerusalem Michael Bedford

Ride through Jerusalem, little donkey, ride through the city today; Ride through Jerusalem, little donkey, palms spread along the way. You bear a dear and precious load, making your way down a

crowded road. Ride through Jerusalem, little donkey, ride through the city today; Ride through Jerusalem, little donkey, palms spread along the way. You bear the Son of God, you see, he’ll bear a

cross for you and me. Sing hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

RESPONSE & PROCESSION

One: Hosanna to the Son of David! Many: Hosanna in the Highest!

One: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Many: Hosanna in the highest!

LISTENING

THE PSALM LESSON Psalm 118

The psalm begins with the refrain sung once by the choir, and then by all. Subsequent refrains are sung once by the entire assembly.

Let us give thanks to God. Let us bless the One who is good. Let all people celebrate the news: “God’s love lasts for always!”

REFRAIN

Open up the gates to God’s house, so we can bless the One who comes --waving braches in the air and saying loudly: “God is great; God remembers us!”

REFRAIN

We are happy now because when we were sad, God heard us and brought us wonderful news: “God will save us.” “God will bring success.” REFRAIN

THE GOSPEL LESSON selections from Matthew 26 & 27

PRAYING & GIVING

OUR KNOWN JOYS AND CONCERNS Stephanie Ford DISCIPLINE OF SILENCE THE MORNING PRAYER AND OUR LORD’S PRAYER (New Zealand/Maori Version)

Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven:

The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.

With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and testing, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Stephanie Ford

Please pass the Friendship Registers found on each row. Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley!

SENTENCES OF STEWARDSHIP

In this week ahead we will be asked to walk the hard road of faith and face the full cost of discipleship. The sacrifice we are called to share involves true commitment and devotion. In that Spirit, we may share freely our gifts, tithes and offerings.

RESPONDING

OFFERTORY Drop, Drop, Slow Tears Richard Shephard

Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance sin doth never

cease. In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears; nor let his eye see sin, but through my tears. Text by Phineas Fletcher (1582-1650)

* DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God, all creatures here below Praise God above, ye heavenly host;

Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

* PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

* AN INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

What Wondrous Love 200 If you wish to become a member of Binkley Baptist Church WONDROUS LOVE

today, you are invited to come forward during the hymn to be welcomed and received.

* RECEPTION AND INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS 341

* BLESSING & BENEDICTION RESPONSE TO THE BENEDICTION Adoramus te, Christe Theodore Dubois

Adoramus te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi,

quia per sanctam crucem tuam redemisti mundum.

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee,

who by Thy Holy Cross hast redeemed the world.

In some Christian traditions, instrumental music, especially organ music, is completely "given up" for Lent. This year at Binkley we will "give up" a portion of the organ music that we normally hear each Sunday by omitting the postlude. The organ postlude will return

on Easter Day.

Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by The Children’s Choir; The Chancel Choir; Jenny Walters,

flute; and Patrick McDonough, percussion. The palms on the communion table are given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for all faithful and loving

caregivers by Daniel Cherrix and Scott Hawkins. Today’s cover art is “Wondrous Love” by Linda Witte Henke, 2015. “Wondrous Love,” Linda writes, “is the

result of extensive digital manipulation of a photograph I took of a cemetery statue. I superimposed the altered image onto a cruciform shape against a background textured with the words of the hymn, ‘What Wondrous Love is This?’ to express my deep appreciation for God’s love made visible in Christ’s offering of himself on the cross.”

Hearing assistance devices and children’s worship bags are available in the Narthex before service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712. Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, and Hannah Wall. * The Congregation standing as each is able.

WALK THE LABYRINTH: The labyrinth is an ancient spiritual tool. Its winding walk symbolizes a pilgrim’s walk with God. First recorded as used by Christians in the 4th century, the labyrinth is an archetype found in all religious traditions. In walking the labyrinth, you may pray, let go of burdens, meditate, rededicate mind and heart, or simply be. After this evening’s presentation of the Durufle Requiem, Binkley members, along with 7 other area congregations, will transform the Sanctuary into a labyrinth, available throughout Holy Week (schedule below.) Come as you are; children are also welcome!

Special Opportunities: Children’s Walk,

Thanks so much, Sheryl

EARTH DAY WORSHIP Apr. 23: In celebration of God’s creation, we will worship outdoors in the Peace Plaza. Please bring a chair or blanket to sit on; casual dress is encouraged. Following worship, our very own Men of Binkley will grill up some hot dogs for lunch. Chips and drinks also provided, or bring your own lunch!

We need your help. We have only raised about $1,500 of our $6,600 goal. Remember, our CROP Walk individual challenge this year is to donate the equivalent of your monthly water bill, or as close to that as you can.

AMANDA TYLER VISITS BINKLEY Apr. 30: Amanda, Executive Director of the Baptist Joint

Committee for Religious Liberty (profiled in February’s Beacon), will be at the Alliance of Baptists meeting

that weekend and has agreed to visit Binkley on Sunday, April 30. She will deliver the sermon during 11:00

worship and will also join us for a Lunch & Learn following worship in the Lounge. Please take this

opportunity to meet Amanda in person and learn how the BJC is reacting to the many challenges posed by

the current political climate in Washington. Lunch is $5, please make a reservation at the office by noon on

4/27, if you plan to attend.

PLEA FOR PARKING LOT COMPASSION: It's wonderful that our parking lot is full on Sunday morning! Yet it creates a concern for many people who have difficulty walking. The spaces directly in front of the sanctuary entrance will be renovated this year to include more access for those with mobility challenges. Until then, if you have the great blessing of energy and ability to walk, please park further away from the entrance and save those spaces for those who need them most. Your understanding and compassion will be most appreciated.

Dear Binkley Family,

It is my joy to share with you the names of our newly elected deacons for the Class of 2020. On April 2, our Binkley Congregation elected Margie Billinger, Barbara Davis, Tom Fewel, Lyn Lamont, and Anne Winfield to serve as deacons for the next three years. At our May Diaconate meeting we will welcome these five new deacons to our deacon family and give thanks for the service of Caryl Fulcher, Anne Huffman, Kristen Smith, Dana Trent,

and to Susan Read, who has chaired our Diaconate this past year. The service of Ordination will occur on Sunday, June 11. I hope you will be present to extend your own blessing for their acceptance of this call to our Christian ministry.

Blessings and Peace to each of you, Melinda Wilde, Diaconate Chair-Elect

THE MEMBERS OF THE FINE ARTS COMMITTEE hope that you will make the time during Lent to learn more about Mary Magdalene. Her life is shown in the beautiful art work displayed in the Sanctuary. Most of the work was done from the 1st to the 21st Century by well-known artists from the Renaissance period. Look at the small pictures next to each piece to see the artist, when it was painted and where it is today. It is especially interesting to try to find the subject in the small picture in the larger picture. Mary Magdalene has excited the imagination of people through the ages more than almost any other New Testament character. First, her name refers to her hometown, Magdala, a port on the Sea of Galilee. Just as we say Jesus, the Nazarene, because he was raised in Nazareth, we say Mary, the Magdalene, because she came from that town. In the four gospels the Magdalene is referred to often and is almost always the first woman mentioned. She is prominent at the time of the crucifixion, being with Jesus’ mother at the foot of the cross, witnessing his burial, and discovering his resurrection. At the resurrection Jesus tells her to go tell the other disciples that he has risen, which she does, hence earning the title “apostle to the apostles.”

OUR WIDER COMMUNITY

ALLIANCE OF BAPTISTS 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AND ANNUAL GATHERING, Apr. 27-30: Over four days in April, the Alliance of Baptists will convene in Raleigh to discuss why we have hope in what Baptists can offer the world and to celebrate the good work of the Alliance in the world, while embracing, ever more deeply, the challenging work of justice and love ahead of us. Rev. William Barber is among many exciting and inspiring speakers on the schedule. See flyer in the narthex for more information. If you can help with supplying homemade cookies for the event, please sign up outside Stephanie Ford’s door.

YOU'RE INVITED: ENJOY A SEASON OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THROUGH THE

HARVESTSHARE PROGRAM! What is it? An abundant box of fresh, sustainably-grown fruits and vegetables from Anathoth Community Garden & Farm, grown in Cedar Grove, distributed on a sliding scale, and all for a mission to cultivate peace. Where and when can I find the produce boxes? We deliver weekly (Wednesdays 5-8 p.m.) to Binkley. Deliveries begin April 26. How do I join? You can purchase a produce box for the season for your own household, or contribute towards another household that needs the support -- or both!

Our vision is for everyone to pitch in what they are able, while sharing as equals in the gift of good food. To sign up, contact Julia Sendor (336-524-7985 or [email protected]) or visit our website at anathothgarden.org. More details:

- Box pick-up sites right here at Binkley, and elsewhere in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, Efland, Cedar Grove, and Roxboro.

- Season length: Warm Season runs April 26 - Sept. October 4 (24 weeks); Cool Season runs Oct.11-Dec. 3 (8 weeks). Sign up for both, or choose one!

- More about HarvestShare: Weekly deliveries of produce, all grown at Anathoth Community Garden & Farm in Cedar Grove (northern Orange County). Through the HarvestShare CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program we care for the land, employ local youth, and distribute good food throughout the community

to households of all income levels. Half of the produce we grow is distributed at no cost to HarvestShare participants who connect with us through churches and health and social service organizations.

- Anathoth's story: The garden, now grown to a farm, was founded in 2005 to address the effects of rural poverty that were brought to light by a murder of a community member. Our mission is to "cultivate peace" through good food and sustainable agriculture, by bringing together neighbors to form lasting relationships with each other and God, while helping the garden and farm thrive. You're invited to join us in this work for peace.
