The President’s Block

August 2008 General Meeting

Be sure to join us for a special night!

A Pie & Ice Cream Social

Join all your friends & quilting buddies for an evening of fun as we indulge our sweet tooth with pie & ice cream & all the trimmings. (Bring fresh fruit for those who cannot eat sweets.) Tell everyone.

This is an evening not to be missed!

See you there!

Volunteer, welcome newcomers, enjoy the old-timers, and remember we all have the commonality of quilt making. In closing, a heartfelt thank you to all for your support and faith to lead this group. Piece in peace, Your friend, Heidi St. Royal P.S. Love and thank you to my husband Les and sons Scott and Nicholas, who have continued to support all my endeavors.

Aggressive in character... complex, but not heavy.... rich and deep with a lovely finesse... Although this sounds like a wine review, these are the words I like to describe quilters and their works of art!! You might even call them bold and well balanced, with a strong finish. Well, I'm at the beginning of a Presidential ride with a super team!! It seems like only yesterday attending my first quilt show at the Glendale Civic Auditorium with Mom, Anne Lu Wolf, and sister, Lori Snee. We were overwhelmed with the quilt world and these passionate people who were so inviting for us to join! In every position thereafter, I became more involved with a most interesting and fun group. It never mattered that you were a "newbie". Many of my closest friends were found in the guild. Fellowship is a great thing on its own, but it also feeds our creativity. Where else can we bond with fabric addicts who just "get it"? What I really want to express to all is the guild is more than just a passionate hobby we all share, you will find not only stitchin' support, but love and kindness when needed. I thank this fresh and energetic team, who volunteered to fill every position on all levels of the board. The Guild’s success and your satisfaction are about communication. If there's a problem, take it to the board.

Block of the Month

Galaxy of Stars! The ever popular block of the month program will begin again next meeting. This season, the monthly projects will be inspired by the creative opportunity quilt now in progress, as well as the theme for the next Glendale Guild Quilt Show. Each month’s project will be a star of various sizes and in varied techniques. Participants will see that the 11 blocks for the whole year will fit together to make a throw sized quilt. In addition, each month the blocks will be featured in various suggested ideas for small to large projects on their own. As always, you will be able to enter up to 5 blocks monthly and have a good chance of going home from the meeting with a handful of blocks made by your fellow Guild friends.

A year of stars to inspire us and send our creativity soaring!

President Alice Smith called the meeting to order at 6:40 PM. Minutes – A couple of changes were made to the previous minutes of the board meeting: correct spelling of name for Ann Meuse; Congressman Mike Antonovich will sponsor the bus for the Guild bus trip to Long Beach & the sale of sewing machines belonging to the Guild was agreed upon by the Board. The General meeting minutes were amended to include missing words for the philanthropy statement: A $500 donation to the Pasadena Museum of History & the San Jose Quilt Museum were approved by the Board for submission to the membership at the June general meeting. Also, membership will vote on Nancy Foote for the Philanthropy chair position. With these changes, the minutes were approved. Finance – Nancy Mraz presented the financial report, including a summary of the 2008 Quilt Show. The final show income is approximately $11,000.00, waiting for an additional $300.00 in outstanding billings. Nancy recommended that the Board watch expenses in the coming months until monies begin coming in for the 2009 Quilt Show. The Board voted to accept the finance report as presented. Nancy also presented the proposed budget for 2008/2009. This budget reflects changes in newsletter & other costs, providing a more realistic numbers for the Guild. This budget was passed by the Board & will be presented to membership at the June meeting. Thank you to the budget committee for their hard work & many thanks to Nancy for her help in organizing the Guild’s finances. We are looking forward to a strong team for the coming year. Parliamentarian – Pat Grim discussed the agenda for the General Meeting, which includes installation of new officers. Nan Maples will present the Master Quilter award winners – Marva Packey & Rasa Read. They will speak briefly & their winning quilts will be on display. Outgoing board members will bring their binders to the pot luck on June 26th to pass on to incoming board members/ Newsletter – Sabine Steinmetz announced she mailed out 140 newsletters this month, compared to the 280 we used to mail. Postage will be much cheaper this year. Correspondence – Susan Edwards handed out invitations to the Pot Luck Board Meeting for current & incoming board members to be held at her home on June 26th. Make sure to sign the sheet & select your item to bring to the Pot Luck. This month, Susan sent a sympathy card to Corinne Gurney, whose husband passed away. Get well cards were sent to

Anne Wolf – knee surgery & Susan Van De Vyvere – hip surgery. A get well card will also be sent to Michelle Pusateri, who broke her foot. Future dates are as follows: 8/19, no meeting in September, 10/21, 11/18, no meeting in December, 1/20, 2/17 & 3/17. She also said 20 hours of white gloving is required to display our opportunity quilt at the Long Beach Show. We also need 2 people to “quilt sit” on Friday. Loving Hands – The next meeting is on Friday, June 13. Alice discussed the Bus Trip on July 26 – we need 40 people for the free bus. The cost is $15.00 per person & includes admission to the show. Reservations must be made by June 11th. Survey forms should be collected with membership forms & Alice recommended a committee to obtain results & coordinate suggestions for improvements. New Business - Alice suggested SCCQG meetings would be beneficial for Workshop & Program people to attend. The NCCQG website would also be a good place to post pictures of our opportunity quilt. The Board will explore other ways to make money for the Guild. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM Respectfully Submitted by Sandy Bradfield Recording Secretary

M e e t i n g R e p o r t s, cont’d.

Glendale Quilt Guild General Meeting Glendale Central Library June 11, 2008 The meeting was called to order by President Alice Smith at 7:15 p.m. Minutes for 5/14/2008 were corrected under Philanthropy to reflect that it was voted to approve the donations to 2 museums. At the General Meeting, Pat Grim had read the recommendation for the member’s consideration. The minutes were approved as corrected. Treasurer Nancy Mraz gave the May financial report which was approved as read. The proposed budget for the fiscal year starting July 2008 was handed to everyone, read and discussed. The budget is less than previous years; however, it is based on realistic expectations of income. After relevant questions were satisfactorily answered, the membership voted to accept next year’s budget as presented. Corresponding Secretary Susan Edwards reported cards were sent to Corrine Gurney, sympathy for the loss of her husband, and get well wishes to Anne Wolfe, Michele Pusateri, and Sharon Bishop. Workshop Chair Louise Rupp announced Rasa Read’s Total Binding by Machine class this coming Saturday the 14th will be held at Patchwork Penguin starting at 9 a.m. Since only one person signed up for Phyllis Binkley’s Painting with Fabric class scheduled for July 26th, that workshop is being cancelled. The $45 kit fee may have deterred many from taking this class. Bus Trip to Long Beach Quilt Festival on July 26th already has many spaces filled. so it is a “go”. Cost is $15 which includes the entrance fee. Flyers are at the membership table. Payment is required to reserve a spot on the bus. Alice and Katsy are organizing this trip. Newsletter Chair Sabine Steinmetz stated that she is collecting articles for next month for Sandy Bradfield who is taking over editorship. Sabine answered questions about when the newsletter is posted on the website (around the first of the month) and its location on our web site which is now in a prominent place on the home page. The current newsletter and back issues can also be located in the drop down box under Resources. 2009 Quilt Show Chair Rasa Read reported on the status of the opportunity quilt, scheduled for completion by the Long Beach Show, and the plan to begin selling tickets at that time. She thanked Pat Rollie for volunteering to quilt it. Rasa passed around sign- up sheets for selling tickets and completing our volunteer obligation in Long Beach. Alice Smith will drive on Friday and can take about 5 people to help sell tickets. The first 2009 quilt show meeting will be on July 15th, 7 p.m., in the Library board room. Everyone is invited. Of the 40 positions, only 10 are filled. The most urgent position needed is someone to “baby sit” the opportunity quilt, and be responsible for getting to the various venues. Membership: Frances Brannon asked that everyone present pick up and renew their membership tonight and save a stamp! 74 members are present, plus one new member. Loving Hands will meet this Friday at the usual place and time. There are no meetings in July and August due to the heat. Philanthropy: Pat Grim read the proposal of donating $500 to

Pasadena Museum of History and $500 to San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles. A motion was made, seconded and carried. Officer Installation was officiated by the Nominating Committee Chair, Pat Grim. The out-going board members were called to the front of the room where Alice Smith presented each with a patriotic block made by her and a thank you note. Then, Pat called the in-coming board members to the front of the room. The positions were briefly described while Heidi presented each one with a chocolate rose. The newly installed Executive Board members are President: Heidi St.Royal, Vice President: Sharon Bishop, Treasurer: Paula Thomas, Recording Secretary: Susan Edwards, Corresponding Secretary: Mia Bloom (not present), Membership: Frances Brannon with assistant Dovie Kapoh, Programs: Barbara Gibson with assistant Kim Smith, Workshops: Ann Calloway with assistant: Donna Hovartos, Parliamentarians: Nancy Mraz and Pat Grim, Newsletter: Sandy Bradfield (not present), Advisor: Alice Smith, 2009 Quilt Show Chair: Rasa Read, and 2010 Quilt Show Chair: Caren Cooke Ryan. Block of the Month: The 14 blocks for this month was won by Corinne Gurney, and a drawing for the completed birthstone quilt was won by Lettie Williams. Door prizes were donated by Pat Rollie, Patchwork Penguin, Quilt’N’Things, Fabric Patch, and Candies Quilt Works. The Patriotic Block Exchange was held up front during the break. Nan Maples presented Master Quilter awards to Marva Packey and to Rasa Read. In turn, they talked about their entrance into quilting, and their award winning quilts. They also each brought their first quilt as well as displayed their winning quilts. With thanks to Marva and Rasa for a great program and sharing their experience, Alice turned the gavel over to Heidi who adjourned the meeting around 9 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Susan Edwards Recording Secretary

Editor’s Corner

Hello, All . . . Well, the first issue of the new year is finally complete & I can begin fine tuning the process to make it easier. I will warn you now that I will be constantly asking for feedback and articles from the membership. Believe me; your input is essential in making this a newsletter both interesting & informative for us all. A huge “Thank You” to Sabine for helping me get started. (I have some big shoes to fill!) I would also like to thank you all for giving me this opportunity to serve the Guild.
