It follows the coastline from Chesapeake Bay tonorthern South America. Florida is curiously shaped and stretches westward to the Mississippi River.The mouth of the Mississippi is shown as a large bay, opening onto three separate rivers. Hondurasoccupies most of Central America, with Nicaragua located on the southwest coast. Cuba is shownalongside Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. The Virgin Islands down to the Grenadines aremapped, as are the Lesser Antilles off the coast of South America. Image size 11 1/8 x 14 1/4" (284 x362 mm). Good condition save minor marginal repair. A scarce 1748 map ofGeorgia, Florida, the Caroli-nas, and Louisiana fromJohn Harris’ "Navigantiumatque Itinerantium Bibliotheca, or Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels." The map ofGeorgia first appeared in the 1744-48 and 1764 editions, when a new chapter was added givinga history of Georgia. The map covers the region from Charleston to an area just west of theMississippi River. This is one of the finest maps of the region during the period. It shows coastalsettlements in South Carolina, the Indian Tribes friendly or hostile to the English, and the chieftrading paths of the period. Image size 14 1/8 x 18 1/2" (359 x 472 mm). Copper plate engraving, 1794. A beautiful map of theUnited States and lower Canada, published shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Includesa nice detailed look at the original colonies, East and West Florida (then part of Spain) and SpanishLouisiana. Excellent detail on the various Indian Tribes in the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys.Article III of the Treaty is reprinted next to the cartouche, which includes one of the earliest representa-tions of an American Flag to appear on a printed map. Image size 17 7/8 x 19 3/4" (452 x 502 mm).Fair condition with vibrant origiinal wash color, but rejoined at centerfold, two spots in sea andmarginal repairs. #9117.4 $2,500.

Itextends from New Jersey and Dela-ware Bay south to Cape Canaveral onthe Florida coast and west beyond the

Mississippi River to Cabo del Norte on the Texas coast. To the north is "Adayes, PresidioEspagnol de la. Prov. De Tecas." Reflecting its French origin, the map places the boundarybetween Louisiana and Florida east of Mobile. Georgia appears, but no boundaries aredrawn. D'Anville shows many rivers, locates Indian tracks and towns, and marks such riversettlements as St. Genevieve and Caskaskia. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, better known as SDUK, was an English enterprisedevoted to spreading the most up to date cartographic information and enhancing geographical under-standing and knowledge of the world. Over a period of years, the maps that the SDUK produced wereissued by various publishers. The following is a breakdown. Baldwin & Craddock, 1829-36. Chapman &Hall, 1844. C. Knight, 1844-52. G. Cox, 1852-3. Stanford, 1857-70. The maps from this series are knownfor their fine engraving and attention to detail.

Wilkes was a painter in oilsand an enthusiastic amateur entomologist.There is evidence that he colored these en-gravings himself. Despite its title, this workis really, as De Belder notes, "a great flowerbook: The plants depicted dominate thecomposition, and are actually more artistical-ly accomplished than the attending insects."The mixture of the two elements adds to theengraving's charm.
