tailgateTALK By Jack Chastain, Editor
First, I wish to thank everyone who helped me celebrate another birthday last month. My son posted a happy
birthday wish on Facebook and over 200 people called, liked or posted a message. The response was most hum-bling. Guy Colyer, you should be proud. For those of you concerned about my health, my heart doctor says I am fine and to quote him, he added thirty years to my life.
This issue covers our annual TJHA-TJPHA State Show. It was another huge success and each year seems to just get bigger and better. This year we had nearly 275 exhibitors enter over 600 cattle entries. Many thanks are due to all the juniors and adults who contributed to the event.
We are proud of the June/July issue we were able to as-semble. Thanks to all advertisers. Hereford demand seems to keep growing. Even in this pandemic year, we should have a fantastic fall sale season.
Our web site continues to be very active in getting sale results. It has been fifteen years since our website first ap-peared. We have recorded almost 200,000 viewers in this time. I am most pleased to hear from those of you who list cattle for sale and call to tell me the cattle are sold. I en-courage more members to avail themselves of this service. More cattle listings will only draw more parties looking to buy. Success breeds success. We do ask that you keep the
listings current and especially let us know when the cattle are sold. But for now, keep the information coming. I am also pleased to report that our Facebook presence has been a great success and that we now have 4675 followers. Even our Texas Junior Hereford Association Facebook page is popular.
I remind members that bull and female entries are due now for the new Powerhouse Hereford sale and 52nd An-nual Whiteface Replacement female sale. Remember we can now accept Red Angus X Hereford cross heifers as well as Black-baldie heifers and we really need to increase our numbers in this division in order to continue to offer this class. Please help us gather a quality offering. If you do not have heifers, encourage a customer or neighbor to consign a pen or two. A successful sale is a good reflection for ev-eryone involved in the Hereford industry. Also note that we have reinstated a pen bull show at Fort Worth.
Even with all of the COVID-19 caused cancellations, there are still sales, shows and other promotional events coming in the next few months. I encourage THA members to attend all that you feel safe at and promote your Hereford breed every chance you get. Remember THA is here to help Sellers sell and Buyers buy. Until next month, stay safe, cool and pray for a good general rain. ★

14 TEXAS HEREFORD • August 2020
Over the years, I’ve enjoyed my fair share of barbecue and more than my fair share of beer. In my humble opinion, they’re the per-fect combination. So, when I heard that G5 Brewpub in Severance, Colorado, was run-
ning a brewery and smoking Certified Hereford Beef, I de-cided it was time for a road trip.
On a recent Friday, my guest and I took the short drive east from Fort Collins for an early lunch. We found the restaurant housed in a rustic craftsman style building with an inviting wrap-around porch and a small parking lot. Upon entering, we were surprised to find that the dining room was packed. A good sign.
Despite the rush, we were quickly seated by the smiling hostess. As we settled in, she let us know that lunch had just started, but if we were still in the mood for breakfast (served from 7am - 11am) she would sweet talk the kitchen for us.
G5 is separated into two distinct dining areas. The front area is used for breakfast and lunch and is designed to give the feel of a farmyard, complete with comfortable picnic ta-ble booths, sky-blue lighting, and a front porch facade over the bathrooms. The second, larger room, is open for happy hour, dinner, and special events. It includes the bar, a stage, and views of the brewery floor.
Smoked Brisket Pizza: a base of tangy, house-made barbecue sauce generously covered with smoked and shredded Certified Hereford Beef brisket.
Divine ComboBarbecue & Beer in Colorados
by Asher Karnes
The lunch/dinner menu is a mix of smoked meats, burgers, pizza, and bar-food classics that pair well with an ever-changing variety of house brewed ales and lagers. There’s a lot going on here, but don’t worry, the servers are more than happy to answer questions and provide recom-mendations.
I was feeling adventurous and decided on the Jalapeno Popper Burger. It was a delicious combination. The half-pound Certified Hereford Beef patty was covered in melted pepper jack cheese and topped with two stuffed, wrapped, and smoked jalapenos. The peppers were filled with melty cream cheese, rolled in crispy bacon, and finished to perfec-tion. The flavors worked perfectly together with the oozy cheeses playing foil to the biting spice.
My guest also decided to get a little crazy and went with the Smoked Brisket Pizza. The pie used a tangy, house-made barbecue sauce as its base and was generously covered with smoked and shredded Certified Hereford Beef brisket. Sharp cheddar cheese and paper-thin diced red onion rounded out the delicious flavors. We were particularly impressed with the crust which had a crispy snap that yielded to a soft, chewy center.

Towards the end of our meal, Tam-my, the owner, stopped by to check on us. When I asked why she had chosen to feature Certified Hereford Beef on her menu, she told me that her deci-sion had been based on advice from her food distributor who told her that Certified Hereford Beef would be a recognizable brand for the local clien-tele. This has definitely proven to be the case, and Tammy couldn’t be hap-pier with her decision.
I’m not sure who or what was being referred to when the phrase “a match made in heaven” was original-ly coined, but it could definitely be applied to the divine combination of barbecue and beer being served at G5 Brewpub. ★

Beginning in 1996 and for each year thereafter as part of state show activities, the membership chooses a community service activity that supports a local event or need in the area which they visit. The event is planned by the juniors to provide a super leadership opportunity and re-sponsibility but guided closely by a group of adult advisors.
This year, the juniors collected
supplies for the Foster Love - Bell County which included baby items, pajamas, socks, duffle bags and per-sonal hygiene products. Also collect-ed were items for the Birthday Box Program which included gift cards, decorations and paper goods for a birthday party.
Representing the juniors are Randi Williams TJHA Reporter and Maggie Chaffin TJHA Secretary. ★
