What an exciting time to be in the cattle business with Hereford
cattle. The entire world is buzzing about the recent sale of C Miles McKee 2103 ET at Colyer’s for a world record price of $600,000 for three-quarters interest to Sullivan Farms, Dunlap, Iowa and CJC Cattle Co., Crawford, Oklahoma. Prior to the sale the bull was shown to Grand Champion honors at our Fort Worth National
Hereford Show. Congratulations to the Colyer family and many thanks for their support of the Fort Worth Show. Good luck to the Sullivan and Castle families with this bull. I am even more proud to see sale reports from all over the nation listing breeders from Texas as their top buyers. This can only expand and improve the genetics our Texas breeders make available to the industry
Our “Fish and Snips” Concert in the Barn III is fast approaching. Save April 27 for a night of food, fun, fellowship, entertainment and dancing. We have Ginny Mac and the Kyle Bennett Band providing entertainment and music. Colt Johnson and his army of volunteers are preparing the food. All will take place at Tenroc Ranch in Salado. The THA Auxiliary is planning a wine and cheese pairing for early afternoon prior to the concert with Reid Guess, Chef at Landrey’s in Austin, presenting the program. Please RSVP by April 20 with the number in your party. A limited number of reserved tables of 8 will be made available.
We have begun work on the 2013 annual membership directory. Every member has been mailed a herd listing form and ad reservation form. Please update your listing. I cannot stress enough how important it is that current members provide us with correct and complete information regarding phone numbers, e-mail addresses, directions to your ranch and herd information. We especially want to update those of you who have developed ranch web sites and can include you with a link from our web site.
Now is a good time to select and breed a pen of heifers for our 45th annual replacement heifer show and sale to be held in Fort Worth on Sunday, February 2, 2014. Plan to select at least one or two extra to make sure you can get the minimum of ten for the pen show. We plan to have our heritage pen of cattle. Now is also a good time to select an entry for the annual Cowtown Select Sale. THA through some generous sponsors has encouraged our junior exhibitors to enter the open show by providing a cash award in the form of a scholarship. I solicit a few more donors as well as all junior exhibitors to consider bringing their heifers to the National Show in Fort Worth. The junior must be present and be at the halter of his or her own animal to be

eligible for the $8000 in scholarships for the high and second high placing heifers.
Our juniors are busy preparing for another great state show and field day held jointly with TJPHA. The event will be held June 19-22 in Belton. As an advisor I can safely say that this event could not happen without the support of the Hereford breeders around the entire state. I encourage all members to respond favorably with both monetary and volunteer help. All THA members could benefit from watching our youth in action.
Hereford demand is as strong as ever and now is as good a time as ever to promote your herd with an ad in our publication. Remember “Advertising does not COST--IT PAYS!” ★

Advantages of THA Membership
SERVICE – The Texas Hereford Association is a service organization to benefit the Hereford breed and the breeder.
Members are assisted in buying and selling cattle at private treaty and by auction.
The Texas Hereford Association sponsors the Commercial Hereford Heifer Show and Sale and the Texas Select Sale. These sales promote the use of better Hereford bulls and females. The Texas Hereford Association is also actively engaged in the promotion of Texas Herefords and in sponsoring seminars, field days, and other events to encourage educational opportunities for members.
ASSOCIATION – The Texas Hereford Association was organized in 1899. Its membership has included the elite of the Texas Hereford industry since its inception. First year membership dues are $95.00. Dues for active membership after the first year are $95.00 plus a $1.00 per head assessment on calves registered the previous year, less those steered, etc. Associate memberships are available for $75.00 per year. Each member receives an attractive membership certificate.
DIRECTORY ISSUE – Every active member of the Texas Hereford Association has a free listing in the Directory issue of The Texas Hereford. This Directory is used by thousands of Hereford breeders the year round. Information pertaining to your herd such as herd sires, bloodlines, location of farm or ranch, telephone numbers, etc., will be listed in this widely used reference book. This herd listing alone is worth the price of membership. Associate members are also listed.
THE TEXAS HEREFORD – Monthly publication of the Texas Hereford Association. It is the only publication in Texas devoted solely to Herefords. It includes news about the association, news about Herefords, and timely editorial features. Active members can list Herefords for sale FREE in the Herefords For Sale column. This service has been responsible for selling thousands of Texas Herefords all over the nation. Texas Hereford Association members may advertise in The Texas Hereford at low livestock rates – a considerable savings for your marketing program. Sale catalogs, brochures, flyers, and other marketing aids designed and produced by our professional staff at considerable savings. (Advertising rates will be sent on request.)
