For the past seven weeks, we have been speaking to members of our owner parish churches. We were also invited to share news about Teurlings Catholicat a church which is not an owner parish just to help get the word out about our high school. September marks the 50th anniversary of the school’sexistence. For half of a century, generations of students have received their Catholic school formation at Teurlings Catholic High School.

Celebrating our golden anniversary is an exciting event….but it also means that our buildings are 50 years old. Through the years, the facility has beenlovingly patched and mended, but there is only so much that can be done with even the best of maintenance work. Some of the classrooms have to berenovated, some of the portable classrooms need to be replaced, and we need to add a few new classrooms.

We announced to all of our owner parishes that we have developed a master plan and capital campaign to address these needs, and our goal is to dedicatethem on the occasion of our 50th anniversary. We will soon be sending this information home to all of our Teurlings Catholic families.

Our campaign is befittingly called, “The Values of the Past….The Spirit of the Future.” We continue to prepare our students for the future whileinstilling the morals and values that have been part of the Catholic Church from its very beginning. It is time for us to take a look at the school’s futureto insure that Teurlings Catholic will continue to meet the Catholic educational needs of our Catholic community.

The Academic Pep Rally held on March 16 was a tremendous display of school achievement and talent. The theme “Ease on Down the Road with GoodGrades” prompted many of us to remember the cast of characters that crossed the stage. The Rebel Dome looked like Munchkin Land and was filledto capacity, the program was exciting, the music added atmosphere, the entire faculty participated, and the students loved it. Our faculty members andparent volunteers are to be commended for orchestrating such a fabulous event. What a great way to spotlight the academic success of our students! Twohundred thirty-six students were recognized as XL award winners; that’s 38% of the total student body.

On every Holy Thursday, we hold our annual sunrise Passion Play at 6:30 a.m. The best way to begin the most important four days in the CatholicChurch is to share it with family. As in the past, our seniors elevate themselves as the spiritual leaders on our campus.

How many of you like to gamble? A ball game wager, a casino trip, and lottery tickets might be right up your alley. April brings us prom activities asthey relate to Teurlings Catholic. When you do not set a curfew, allow your children torent hotel rooms, sponsor after parties where anyone who can open the ice chest or lookover the bar counter can drink, and let them act as though they are consenting adults,you are gambling with your child’s life. You are gambling with your neighbor’s or yourbest friend’s child’s life at the same time. When you let your children go to an afterparty, even though you or other parents are present, you are gambling with not onlyyour child’s life, but with the lives of other children when you condone the drinking ofalcohol at these events.

Teurlings Catholic does not sponsor, condone, or advertise any after party or drinkingcorresponding to any school activity. Parents who allow drinking by underage childrenare breaking the law. Our children are all underage and the state of Louisiana and theFederal government say they cannot legally consume alcoholic beverages. The schoolwill notify the appropriate agencies of any planned activity where drinking may take

place that is associated with any school activity.Gambling is to take a chance. Most of the timewhen you are asked to take a chance, that chanceends up taking you. Love your children, don’tgamble with them.

are the parent of a senior, you know exactlywhat I am talking about. Seniors move intofinal exams the week of May 10, accordingto the following schedule:

Tues., May 10: 2nd & 3rd hr. examsWed., May 11: 7th & 1st hr. examsThurs., May 12: 5th & 6th hr. examsFri., May 13: 4th hr. exam

I have seen few things more pitiful, in my17 years of dealing with seniors, than asenior who literally “blew” the opportunityfor scholarships and, in a few cases, evencollege admission with a bad case ofsenioritis during the last two months ofschool. The end is near but not here yet.Seniors, as well as the rest of the studentbody, need to remember that school workcontinues until final exams are completed.

Parents, make sure your son ordaughter does not blow off the last fewweeks of school. Many of our seniors areborderline for TOPS awards, either waitingfor that ACT score or hovering right belowor above the 2.5 GPA requirement. Othersare borderline for the larger TOPS awardsfor the same reasons. Please make sureyour senior knows the year does not enduntil May 13.

BUSY TIME OF YEARFor most of our students, April is

one of the busiest months of the year. Wehave activities galore scheduled. There’sbaseball, softball, track, tennis, golf, andbowling; the Speech Tournament ofChampions; Rebel Revue and Cheerleadertryouts; the annual TCH Art Show; prom;Grandparents’ Day; Student Councilelections; the spring blood drive; Earth Day;Mass with the bishop on April 14; the seniormass and crawfish boil; and the final ACTof the school year on April 9. In other words,there are a lot of things that will be onstudents’ minds other than academics. Ourteachers are going to attempt to focus thestudents, but we need the help of parents.Please make sure your student does notget so involved in the other activities going

on that he or she neglects studies.Third quarter report cards were

issued on March 23 and failure letters willbe mailed out the next day. If the thirdquarter report card was not what youexpected or if you receive a failure notice,please discuss the grades with your childand then contact the teacher. In mostcases, there is still time to correct aproblem but not without hard work on thepart of the student and backing by theparent.

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS - 2005

The TCH School Board serves as an advisory committee for the school. Boardmembers may be elected by parents or appointed by pastors of the TCH ownerparishes. Terms on the board require a three year commitment.

This year, four vacancies exist. Three are appointed positions to represent St.Peter Church, St. Elizabeth Seton and St. Genevieve Church. One is for a memberat large position. All parents of TCH students may vote to elect the member atlarge.

Nominees for the at-large position should be parents of children currently enrolledat TCH and are registered for the following school year. Nominees should bewilling to make the necessary commitment of time to serve as an effective boardmember. The following individuals and their spouses are NOT eligible for boardmembership:(1) Employees of the school(2) Employees of an owner-parish(3) Persons who work at the school but are paid for that work by anothergroup, agency, individual or school system.

Please submit a brief bio of yourself. Include the name of your spouse andchildren with your children’s grade levels. Additional information to include: churchparish participation, community involvement and active interest in school activities.If you are a graduate of TCH, a statement regarding your Catholic schoolexperience would also be appreciated.

Milton Rohm, Jake Dueitt, and DanielGautreaux had a tremendous BoysBasketball season, advancing to thesecond round of the state playoffsand being named undefeated districtchampions. Also, congrats to CoachRohm for being named District Coachof the Year.

Josette Surratt and the Rebel Speechand Debate Team won the CFL StateTitle, qualifying 20 students. Fourstudents placed at the HarvardInvitational national tournament.

Mrs. Dona Dugas, Mrs. LindaDoherty, and Mrs. Cathryn Martinworked together to invite Mrs. EllyGross, a Holocaust survivor to visit ourcampus for three days and speak tothe TCH student body about herexperiences.

The Rebel Open golf tournament brings focus to the effortsof the Teurlings Catholic High School Foundation. Theprimary purpose of the foundation is to assure the longevityof Catholic education at Teurlings Catholic High School byestablishing an endowment trust fund. Seniors and ParentsGraduation will be here before we know it! So that you may begin preparations for the “Big Events,” please note the

requirements to be met by each student in order to graduate and the dates and times for senior and graduation events.

Graduation Requirements¨ All debts to Teurlings Catholic High School, including tuition and fees-for lost textbooks, library fines, and balances with thecafeteria, must be cleared before a senior will be allowed to take his/her exams, which begin on May 10, 2005.¨ In order to receive a Teurlings Catholic High School diploma, a student must pass a total of 26 units including all state-requiredcourses. A student who fails to qualify under this standard may participate in graduation exercises if, and only if, he/she passed a total of 23units, including all state-required courses and Theology IV. Such students will not receive a TCH diploma, but a diocesan diploma.¨ Any senior student who receives a grade of “Incomplete” in Theology IV or fails Theology IV for the year shall not be granted a TCHdiploma and shall not participate in graduation ceremonies.¨ Please refer to the TCH Student-Parent Handbook for clarification of the aforementioned requirements and policies.¨ Any student who is determined by the sponsors, faculty, or administration to be under the influence of alcohol or any otherwiseinappropriate substance during any school-sponsored event will not be allowed to graduate on stage or to participate in any other graduationevent. Such students will also be subject to disciplinary action.

Dates and Times of Events¨ The Senior Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 8:48 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Family and friends areinvited to join the seniors for this celebration. Seniors wear Sunday dress attire.¨ Senior Exams are scheduled for May 10 - May 13, 2005. See schedule for exams on page 6 of the Rebelation.¨ Senior Convocation will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. Attendance at thisfunction is mandatory for all senior students. Seniors should arrive at 2:00 p.m. sharp. If a senior is not present at this function, he/she will notgraduate on stage with the Class of 2005. Dress Code: Girls - Graduation gown, white stole, black sheer stockings, black closed-toe shoes (noslides, must have a back). Boys - Graduation gown, white stole, dark slacks and dark socks (blue, brown, charcoal, or black), dark dress shoes,a white shirt and an appropriate tie. (No graduation cap for this event, stoles will be given out prior to the ceremony.)¨ Graduation and Baccalaureate Mass Practice will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2005, at the Heymann Performing ArtsCenter. Attendance is mandatory for all graduates. Students should be aware that practice will last until rehearsals meet expectations for thefinal ceremony and, therefore, should not plan any other activities before 12:00 noon. Report cards will be distributed at this time.¨ Baccalaureate Mass will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2005, at the Frem Boustany Convention Center, which is adjacentto the Heymann Center. Graduating seniors are to report at 4:45 p.m. on that day. Attendance at this Mass is mandatory for all graduates. Inorder to graduate on stage, the student must attend the Baccalaureate Mass. Due the limited seating capacity of the Convention Center,seating for the Baccalaureate mass will be limited to immediate family of the graduates. Dress Code: Girls - Graduation cap and gown, whitestole, black sheer stockings, black closed-toe shoes (no slides, must have a back). Boys -Graduation cap and gown, white stole, dark slacksand dark socks (blue, brown, charcoal, or black), dark dress shoes, a white shirt and an appropriate tie.¨̈̈̈̈ The 2005 Graduation Ceremony will be held at the Heymann Performing Arts Center immediately following the Baccalaureate Mass.Guests not present for the Mass will not be admitted into the auditorium until after mass participants have entered, approximately 7:00 p.m.Attendance is, of course, mandatory. Dress Code: Same as Baccalaureate Mass. Girls will be given a class flower to hold and boys will weara boutonniere. Beta Club, National Honor Society and Honor Graduates will receive additional accessories during the Convocation. Theseaccessories should be worn Graduation night. No other decorations or flowers are allowed at the ceremony. PLEASE NOTE THAT TEURLINGS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL DOES NOT SPONSOR, NOR DOES ITENDORSE ANY POST-GRADUATION PARTY OR GATHERINGS. Graduates and their parents are reminded that Trinity Video Productions is producing a “Senior Highlight” video, which willinclude footage from graduation. TCH Sports Update

The 30-hour classroom instuction class will be held May30th - June 2nd from 8:00 - 3:00 and June 3rd from 8:00 -10:00; the 6-hour driving session will be in June and July.Students must be 15 years old before November 1st, 2005.Cost for the course is $275 payable upon registration.Instructors: Classroom - Mrs. Dona Dugas; Driving -Coach Milton Rohm and Coach Garry Brodhead.Registration forms are available in the counselor’s officefrom Mrs. Pat Rohm.
