THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS OF TEURLINGS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
M A R C H , 2 0 1 1
From Our Principal... As Catholics, Lent is our great retreat. It is the time during which we reflect on our baptismal commitment and make changes where we need them. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 9, and ends with the Easter Triduum on Holy Thursday, April 24th. Years ago, we were taught to give up something as a way of doing penance, i.e., no candy between meals, no carbonated drinks, no television after 7:00 p.m., etc. It really seemed like a big deal! I would encourage you, in this season of Lent, to spend time as a family to pray, play, and work together. In Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Lafayette, applications for admission are completed in the month of January for the following year. The number of applications exceeded available space and not everyone who sought Catholic education was admitted to Teurlings Catholic. We budgeted to accept 185 freshmen students for the 2011-2012 school year. To guarantee your child’s enrollment, it is important to participate in the registration process taking place March 2-4. Family situations change and those students on the wait list may have the opportunity to be enrolled. We have so many things to celebrate as a school community. The Rebel Cheerleaders won the SCA National Cheerleading Championship and placed 3rd at the UCA Contest of Champions in Orlando. The Rebel Revue dance team competed in the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando and placed 5th in the nation in Hip-Hop and 10th in Pom. The Rebel Wrestling team won the Division II State Championship and set a state record for most team points. Our girls’ and boys’ soccer teams won district championships, and the boys advanced to the quarterfinals. The girls are the Division II State Champions with an overall record of 20-4; they had 17 shutouts and allowed only 13 goals all season . The recent production of Little Shop of Horrors was well attended despite the icy weather and was a very professional production. On March 23, at 12:15 p.m., we will celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students with the annual Academic Pep Rally. Join us in the RebelDome as the Rebels celebrate “Wild about Good Grades!” We begin each Monday during the season of Lent with a student initiated spiritual observance of the meaning of Lent. This journey will take us to the student-reenactment of the Passion of the Lord at sunrise on Holy Thursday. We have so much for which to be grateful. The lessons in our Christian life that we pass on as a school run much deeper than, “What did you give up for Lent?”

ACADEMICS
Marty Heintz - Assistant Principal
As parents, you receive score reports every time your student takes a standardized test. In fact, over the course of the average 13-year elementary to high school student span, you have probably collected a huge folder full of score reports, along with a final report card from every grade level, information that you look at, try to understand, then file away in case it is needed later. Just what do those Stanford, EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT scores mean? How do you read them? And what do they tell you about your child’s progress? First, the tests themselves: STANFORD – a standardized test given by many of our feeder schools but different in scoring from the tests (EXPLORE, PLAN, ACT, NMSQT/PSAT) generally given at the high school level. The Stanford reports scores in percentiles. What you want to look at on the Stanford testing is the National PR-S. This will tell you how your child compares to students from across the nation at the same grade level. There is a score for “complete battery” or how the student did overall on the test as well as individual scores in Reading, Math, Language, etc. and subscores under some of those categories. The score is reported in a format such as “78-8” which indicates your student scored just below the 79th percentile nationally, or that 78% of students scored lower than your child. EXPLORE – an 8-9th grade version of the ACT, is given by some of our feeder schools; the test follows the same basic format as the PLAN and ACT, but the scale is different (1-25) and the norms are based on the ninth grade. We do not give the EXPLORE at Teurlings, but if you have an EXPLORE report, the most important item on it is the box that says “Your Estimated PLAN Composite Score Range” followed by a predicted score range, say “16-19”. This is the score that ACT predicts your child, if a college-prep curriculum is followed, will earn on the PLAN Test in the 10th grade. The chart below pertains to EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT. Attaining the following benchmark score on each tes t indicates a 75% chance, according to ACT, that the student will be capable of earning a “C” or better in the a pplicable college course:
PLAN – a 10th grade version of the ACT, is given to our students in 9th and 10th grade. We use the 9th grade scores on our campus to help us chart growth in our students and to help plan our
curriculum revisions. It is the 10th grade scores that are important to you, as a parent, as those are good indicators of how the student will do on the ACT as well as helping you (and us) to spot weaknesses while those weaknesses can be remediated. The PLAN is normed to 10th graders, so, yes, those 9th grade scores show how your student stacks up against 10th graders, which is why we use them only to chart growth. While EXPLORE is based on a 25-point scale, PLAN is based on a 32-point scale. Again, the most important scoring item for parents is the box labeled “Your Estimated ACT Composite Score Range” followed by a predicted score range, say “19-21”. This is the score that ACT predicts your child, if a college-prep curriculum is followed, will earn on the ACT Test in the 12th grade. PSAT – is a test given to 11th graders and selected sophomores. While the scoring system is different from ACT/PLAN/EXPLORE, it serves the same type of purpose in predicting scores on the SAT, the standardized test used for college admissions in other parts of the country. Louisiana universities, as do most universities in the south, require the ACT, not the SAT. PSAT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. ACT – “THE” test in Louisiana, the one college admissions and TOPS use to set their standards and awards. As I am sure you can guess, the scale on the ACT increases from the PLAN and Explore tests, to a scale of 36. In general, if the student took a college preparatory curriculum and applies what has been learned to the test, the composite score from the PLAN to the ACT increases an average of 1-3 points. For the last few years, the ACT score needed for TOPS has been a 20; selective admissions universities (like UL) in the state generally require an ACT composite score of 22 for regular admissions. Here’s an interesting fact that many of you may not know – college and universities use the student’s best scores (his or her top English score out of all the times the student took the test, or the best composite, even if the student took the test 6 or 7 times) but ACT, when the organization compiles its annual report, only looks at the student’s last scores as a high school senior when computing our school average. So, if the student took the test in April of the 11th grade and scored a 28 on the composite and took the test again in April of 12th grade and scored a 27 this time, the 28 from the 11th grade testing would be the student’s score used for TOPS and college admissions, but the 27 would be used to figure our school ACT average. We all know standardized testing is an important factor in college admissions and has its place in measuring student progress. Many students, however, with scores of 20-21 on the ACT have not only completed college but done so in four years and many with over 30 composites took the “long” route (and enjoyed themselves along the way) if they graduated from college at all. The one thing the ACT and standardized tests like it do not measure is the student’s personal motivation. Will that student with a 30-plus composite live up to his or her potential in college? Or will that student who scored lower but who possesses great time management and study skills be the one to succeed? If I could figure out how to predict that with 100% accuracy, I’d be a millionaire!

OFFICE DEPOT While shopping at Office Depot, help TCH get school supplies. Just give them the ID Number: 70042050.
ALBERTSONS Use your scan card, which you can pick up in the front office, and a percentage of your grocery bill earns cash for TCH. Visit www.albertsons.com. Click on “In The Community” then click on the Community Partners logo link. Once you log in, click on “Sign me up.”
COMMUNITY COFFEE All Community Coffee product UPC/bar code labels are accepted by Toni Dueitt (Ext. 107) anytime of the year. Also, you can save your CC’s receipts! Each label or receipt is worth up to 15 cents. Funds are earmarked for the library.
