I suppose that at this time of year we should be sitting back in a deckchair, feetup, admiring all the work done over the past few months. Well, do just that andenjoy your garden.

Also take a walk around. I like to walk around the garden and think of all thepeople who have kindly given me bits of plants, slips and shoots. I can look atplants and flowers from my parents garden and remember my early years as myparents created and cared for their garden. Some of the plants from their garden

now live in my garden. I look at plants kindly given to me by friends andremember them, some who have long since died. I dread to remember all theplants which were given to me and have disappeared because I did not succeedin their care. I look at plants (some of which have grown into trees!) whichwere given to me on special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries -memories, memories.

I love to smell the scents of flowers which bring back evocative memories -

sweetpea, roses, lavender, cat mint, geraniums. I also see the convolvulus andthe robin-run-the-hedge climbing up everywhere, but I leave it to another dayand return to the deckchair!

Don't forget to enjoy your garden and treasure the memories.

The Carry CentreA wonderful evening on May 23rd marked the closure of the Hall for refurbishment. Asmentioned we then faced a major obstacle; however, through the generosity of our ownparishioners we have overcome it! The Rector wishes to put on record his gratitude forthe support and encouragement given to the project. We envisage the Centre being readyfor use at the beginning of November. In the meantime the parish users will usevarious locations for their gatheringsplease consult each organisation for fulldetails. For more information visit www.carrycentre.ie

PentecostOn the feast of Pentecost, we joined the clergy & parishioners of St Matthias, Ballybrack fora festive Holy Communion in the Old Church of Killiney on Marino Ave. It certainly was amemorable service for during the service the heavens opened not with tongues of fire butbuckets of rainwell done to all those who attended!

Patronal FestivalThe Annual Patronal Festival was marked with a special Parish Communion in Holy Trinity. The guest preacher was the Very Revd Kenny Hall, Dean of Clogher (pictured above with the

Rector, Lay Reader & Churchwardens) Many thanks to Daphne Hall and her team whodecorated the church for the occasion.

Christian AidAn uplifting service on May 11th marked the beginning of Christian Aid Week. Many thanksto Marianne Irvine and her team who organised refreshments after the service and to allthose who support the work of Christian Aid.

    Summer 2013

David Millar writes, Each day begins with a Service, in which may be included hymnswith old words to new tunes or new hymns with old tunes or traditional hymnswhich one thought one knew by heart only to find oneself caught out by a 21st-

century line in an old favourite dating back to the late 1700s. One needs to be onones toes. In his address the Archbishop of Armagh pointed to the individuality ofthe life of each one of us, and the need to look beyond our own selves into theworld in which our children and grandchildren will live.Synod Bills are required to pass three readings before passing into Church law. Manyinvolve non-controversial up-dates, but others demand detailed debate, and not allget through. Only one - that sought a gender balance among elected parochialnominators - failed, narrowly enough, on the grounds that not all parishes couldmeet a legislated requirement.

Reports and presentations included that of the Bishops Appeal, only 6.3% of thefunds raised go in expenses, which stated that many projects do not make the mediaand that some are overtaken by even more urgent disasters elsewhere. Talk ofreduced time allowable for religious education, with a concentration placed onreligions generally rather than any particular religion believed in by the individual, made for a lively discussion. Questions were again raised about Church silver lying insafes. The increasing problem which parishes are facing regarding their buildings, thepainstaking steps which have been taken with regard to clergy pensions with the

retirement age rising to 68, the report of the Parish Development Working Group, and commemorations surrounding events between 1913 and 1922 were some of themany other diverse subjects discussed.Again this year, towards the end of the second day, the meeting broke intodiscussion groups. We were presented with questions the answers to whichdeserved more time than their complexity and diversity allowed, and merit furtherconsideration within parishes, and subsequent re-visiting.Next years Synod meeting will be held in Armagh, but with the need to provide foran attendance of 650 (not quite a third larger than the Church of England) though the

attendance each day this year reached only 65%, increasingly urgent questions forthe future raise their heads.Constant change is here to stay may well sum up the meeting.

Restaurant Review - You light my FIRE!!!

FIRE is a restaurant/cocktail bar situated on Dawson St., beside The MansionHouse, which caters for all adult ages and tastes. I have never had anything lessthan superb food there and a recent meal continued that theme.

The Pre-Theatre menu at 29.50 for 3 courses with tea or coffee is great valueand is available at varying times during the week. A snapshot of what wasconsumed - juicy Garlic Prawns in melted herb butter with chorizo, Irish HakeFillet and a chocolate framboise, (pictured), all beautifully presented and precededby complimentary warm fresh breads and dips.

Other choices include novel variations on vegetarian, chicken, steak and fishoptions so there is something for everyone. The service is always just the rightside of attentive without being overbearing. It is a spectacular location, especiallyif seated in the circular main dining room, and a lovely place to bring family andfriends visiting Dublin. See website: www.mansionhouse.ie/fire-restaurant/

It was a dull wet afternoon when we flew into Glasgow Prestwick on the west

coast of Scotland. The airport is now very dilapidated (it recently sold for 1)but boasts one major claim to fame, it is the only piece of British soil on whichElvis Presley stood, his plane re-fueled at the airport during a stop off on his

journey home from military service in Germany. Walking across the soakingtarmac to the paint-peeled building, I could not blame him for never returning.

We hired a car, a compact but zippy little number with the most unexpected ofadded extras, a soft top. A retractable roof is not altogether useful in theScottish climate, but, owing to the novelty value, we made full use of the feature,

and headed off with the wind, and possibly a few spots of rain, in our hair. Wetravelled north from Prestwick to Wemyss Bay and from there it was a shortferry ride to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. In its heyday the island was a majortourist destination, with thousands of holidaymakers and day trippers travellingon the steamers down from Glasgow. It is now a lot quieter, and still verypleasant. The island is a haven for walkers and cyclists with many beautiful routescrisscrossing the landscape. The Mount Stuart estate is one of the most popularattractions on the island. The house has been described as an architectural

masterpiece and one of the worlds greatest houses. It was designed by SirRobert Anderson for the 3rd Marquess of Bute in the late 1870s and reflects theeccentricity of the Marquess, and excessive wealth that the family had acquiredthrough astute marriages and business dealings. At the time the Marquess wasthe richest man in the UK and the house very much demonstrates this.

Our stay on Bute was short, but perhaps if you decide to visit for yourself youmight see us there, I am sure we will be back.
