NLCN 2008 Focus

THE NORTH LAWNDALECOMMUNITY NEWS

Spirituality & Financial LiteracyThe primary focus for Strategic Human Services and the

North Lawndale Community News during 2008 will beChurch, Financial Literacy and Technology. There are manyproblems that face North Lawndale and its neighboringcommunities. All are the most important to any individualwhen it is his, her, or their biggest battle.

Many people believe in God. Churches, Synagogues, orTemples are good places, albeit not the only places, to developa connection. There are many churches on the Westside andin Chicago, with the Faith based Initiatives, they havedeveloped more outreach into the communities with programsand advocacy. We want more people to know that church is agreat resource that helps improve the lifestyle of individualsand families.

There is still a great economic inequality. Beingfinancially, unwise and uneducated, has created anuncountable loss for many in our coverage area.

The National Black Caucus of States Institute.(NBCSI)recognizes that while personal finance is important toeveryone—lack of personal financial knowledge, increaseddebt and access to financial services has had a negativelydisproportional impact on families—particularly AfricanAmerican families with limited resources.

Data indicate the overwhelming gap of economicresources as African Americans lag in home and businessownership, lack of savings accounts and lower credit scores.

There are alarming statistics that help frame theseconcerns:

· According to the Corporation for EnterpriseDevelopment 60% of African American families have zeroor negative net financial assets.

· The average Black household has 54 cents of incomeand 12 cents of wealth for every dollar earned and held bywhites.

· In the United States, 10% of the families control 90 % offinancial wealth.

· A consumer with a low credit score of 560 compared toa consumer with a high credit score of 720 will payapproximately $400 a month more or $4,800 more a year—if they qualify for a loan.

· A disproportionate number of low credit scores are foundin predominantly African American communities.

If there is going to be long-term improvement in thissituation, NBCSI believes that it will begin with economic

Education. From the Economic Empower Forums of theNational Black Caucus of States Institute website. www.nbcsi.

SHS believes becoming financially literate can help solvethe challenges above, and others, while also helping to createa better community for all.

We also wll continue using technology to help educate, connect you to these resources. Throughout the year, we willconnect you with resources and residents working in theseareas. Check out our website and links such as the LawndaleBeehive. NLCN will continue to provide news andinformation on issues and events that are relevant to ourreaders, as well as touch on the focus of our previous years.By becoming a God connected, financially wise people, knowing, loving and caring about each other more, we canmore participate and benefit in making our communitiesmodel neighborhoods. We hope by reading this communitynewspaper, you will become or remain inspired to keepmoving foward to a better life wisely, overcoming adversity.

THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (**1/2)The latest Asian legend given a western

treatment on celluloid is a wondrous andentertaining action adventure that offers the firstever screen participation of Martial artssuperstars Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the samefilm (with each doing dual roles) and theacrobatic action sequences from choreographerWo Ping and vivid cinematography by PeterPau who each brought distinction to “CrouchingTiger Hidden Dragon”. Now has made “TheForbidden Kingdom” the perfect jump-start tothe upcoming summer blockbuster movieseason

Michael Angarano portrays Jason, anaverage teenager with a yen for kung fu movieswho rents videos from a pawn shop run by itskindly, old Chinese owner, Old Hop (JackieChan in very heavy makeup). Where Jasonhappens to observe a secret room full of ancientartifacts and becomes attracted to a golden staffstick

When Jason awakens from the fall hediscovers he’s been transported to ancient Chinawhere he’s befriended by a quartet of variedmartial artist misfits, a drunken warrior, Lu Yan(Jackie Chan on a role he duplicated from oneof his early imports, “The Drunken Master”),an vengeful orphan girl (Li Bing Bing), and asoldier monk (Jet Li) who teams and teach theAmerican youth proper kung fu defensetechnique. While they journey through thedesert, fight off a female bounty hunter and hermassive army into the mountains in the clouds. In order for the youth “to fulfill the prophesyof the morals” and return the staff to its rightfulowner

Derived from the traditional Chinese tale, the staff is the power source to the playful yetskillful Monkey King (Jet Li) who was trickedand turned into a stone statue during his battlewith the evil Jade war lord (Collin Chou) whofelt the intruder was a threat to the kingdom hewas line to take over.

Jason along with his Asian cohorts can save

the kingdom by returning the staffthat would free the imprisonedMonkey King and ultimately helpJason to return home.

Even though the youthachieves a better life for himselfin ancient China than in hiscurrent N.Y, life, and yet, upon hisreturn back to his own world,Jason is given a “Karate Kid”moment by surprising chief bully,Lupo with his “acquired fightingskills.”

Although entertaining enoughand a dazzling action -adventurespectacle that helps further thedirectorial skills of Rob Minkoff of “The LionKing “ and Stuart Little” fame, “The ForbiddenKingdom” is a bit too formulated and cliché withits casting and situations.

Even though kung fu movie fans are given apictorial homage in the opening credit to BruceLee and others in their fighting poses andrewarded in the script by a physical and intricatefight dance between Jackie Chan and Jet Li.Naturally, their exchange becomes a draw whenit’s revealed they are on the same mission withthe American youth.

Still, I could not help but wonder, Why inthese type of movies is the” chosen one” alwaysan Anglo-Saxon sent to help free an oppressedrace or nation? This is so familiar to the 1970’sblack films that suggested Blacks didn’tovercome their circumstances without the helpof some heroic White person leading the way.PG-13; 95min. Sports fans stood in line to meet ChicagoBears’ Jerry Azuman, who signed countlessautographs for the crowd of adoring fans.

Many reminisced about their first time at theconservatory while others marveled at the beautyof the legendary “landscape under glass.”

Katherine Roach, a resident of NorthLawndale brought her four children to the partyand was delighted that they were enjoying thefestivities and the conservatory just as much asshe did as a child with her grandmother.

“Bringing my children here brings back oldmemories, especially when we walked throughthe entrance and you see all the flowers and allthe greenery – it just took me back to when Iwas a little girl and when I was just so amazed atall the different plants; so, I hope that myexperience will be the same experience for mychildren and that they pass it down to theirchildren,” Roach said.

In the midst of the celebration was anenlightening history presentation by JuliaSniderman-Bacharach, co-author of “Inspired ByNature,” published in honor of the centennialthat covers everything from the history of theconservatory and Garfield Park to the revival ofthe surrounding community.

Within the past year there have been manyincidents involving threats or acts of violenceon college campuses. First with the VirginiaTech shooting, then with the tragedy atNorthern Illinois University. They werefollowed by the murders of two femalestudents, one at Auburn University and theother at The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

However, even with the increase ofsecurity on campus after these unfortunateincidents around the United States and herein Illinois, students at Malcolm X collegewere still the victims of a school violencethreat yesterday morning, which resulting inthe school evacuating the 900 students whowere in attendance.

“It’s a terrifying situation you know,” saidJames Beacon, a student at Malcolm X. “Youcan never be sure of if someone is trying tobe funny or if there is really the chance that aperson is going to cause the student body andstaff serious harm. I remember NorthernIllinois had similar threats before theshootings down there, but many people wroteit off as a person attempting to cause a scene.Sadly, you see what happened in that case.”

The threat, which had been revealed by astudent who read it on the inside of abathroom stall, was said to have said “prepareto die on 4-14 til the end” was taken veryseriously and prompted both the ChicagoPolice Department and the F.B.I. to thecampus, located at 1900 W. Van Buren.

“Children should not have to be worriedabout the threat of death when tying to get an

education and preserve the future,” saidOfficer Winston McCall. “You can be assuredthat there will be stiff penalty whenever thesuspect is caught, because this kind ofbehavior and such a despicable act causeunnecessary stress and worry to the studentsand staff.”

Thankfully, no weapons or hazardousmaterials were found after a through searchby both the CPD and FBI with the aid of bombsniffing dogs. The school then re opened at4:30, with many students happy to be back inschool, knowing that they can feel safe andfocus once again on education. “It’s good toknow that the City of Chicago has properresponse techniques to ensure our safety whenanother person makes an attempt to put it indanger,” said foreign student Payal Chawda.“I have seen many incidents on the news butnever been a part of such a scary moment andhopefully never will be again.”

Some students however feel that theschool should have been closed, at least forthe day, to allow more internal investigation.“The school closed at 9:30 and reopened atfour, how much investigation can you do inseven hours, how safe can you make theperimeter and how many fears can you easein that short amount of time,” said JasmineQ. Stuart, a transitional student at MalcolmX. “I am all for getting back in the routine ofnormal and trying to get people back in theflow, but not at the expense of what couldhave been a later attack that could have leftus injured. I just feel we needed more time, although I am happy that all ended well.

In your Bible, in the book of Matthewchapter 22, verse 37-40:

37 Je’sus said unto him. Thou shalt lovethe lord thy God with all thy heart, and withall thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and greatcommandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, thoushalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hangall the law and the prophets.

These are some very powerful words, they seem so simple and yet they seem likethe hardest thing we could ever do. In allreligions, these two greatest commandmentsdon’t change. No matter how we choose toworship, you don’t get the rewards orblessings if you do not do these first. It’s asif you have to learn to believe and live thesecommandments before you can learn or liveany other law. AND YET YOU HAVE ACHOICE, ITS CALLED FREE WILL. APERSON CAN CHOOSE TO DO RIGHTOR CHOOSE TO DO WRONG. WE ALLWANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING ANDIT’S SO SIMPLE YET IT SEEMS SOHARD.

Let’s try to understand the messagetogether. Let’s look at the firstcommandment and see how we can live itfrom a Christian point of view.

Thou shalt love the lord thy God with all thyheart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

We must first love God and what hestands for, and we must do it with the heartsoul and mind... The Bible says in Romans6:12 (get your Bible and read it) that thebattle is not flesh and blood but the battle isspiritual. The battle is inside. God fightsyour battles for you inside and your rewardscome as blessings on the outside. When youlove and honor the lord thy god you do itthrough prayer. The Bible says a man should

pray without ceasing, which means all thetime, as much as you can. You should prayfor the spirit to guide you daily. You shouldpray that god will teach you how to stopcursing if that be one of your knownweaknesses. If you are saying prayerfulthings then you can battle the spirit ofcursing. The Bible says you bring intoexistence what you say out of your mouth(search the scripture) so why would you wantto say bad things are going to happen to youor to somebody else... If you pray goodthings and say good things then eventuallygood things will come to you.

And the second is like unto it, thou shaltlove thy neighbor as thyself.

Simple it seems; look at your neighborthe person standing next to you now; the firstperson you see when you raise your head upfrom reading this. Did you see yourneighbor? Not just the person next door, butevery time you open your eyes, you see yourneighbor and this is the meaning that Jesusis trying to convey. To love yourself is tolove your neighbor because you love God.

We must first love ourselves before we cangive love to others. We must accept who weare in strength and in truth. We must fight thatweakness that keeps us from loving our selfthrough prayer and the job is half done .Wemust also pray to learn to love our neighbor, saying good things and doing good things. Saygood things about yourself and say good thingsabout your neighbor and eventually your spiritwill shine for your neighbor and when you seethe spirit in your neighbor, the spirit will alsoshine in you... Let’s get in the Spirit.

The Garfield Park Spring/Summer YouthBasketball League tipped off its 18th seasonlast week and the historic Golden Dome gymfieldhouse that has been a haven for youngathletes for nearly two decades is alive onceagain with the sounds of balls bouncing on thehardwood, referees whistles signalinginfractions, and balls successfully swishingthrough nets, as well as clanging off rims, notso successfully.

Whether the balls fall through the net orclang off the rim is not terribly important inthis league. The goal is more focused on simplyenjoying the games and doing somethingpositive, when so many counter-productiveactivities loom in the nearby streets. Duringthe four months when the league is in session, area youth have something constructive topartake in that’s proven to be effective incurtailing teenage trouble and violence.

Park Supervisor, Jim Hobson, hasorganized the Garfield Park League since itsinception, and he has seen the benefits thatsports and organized activities have foryoungsters. Basketball is something they love, but he’s open to anything that they are

interested in, as long as it’s positive.“I’m a big proponent of

programming for teens and youngpeople. The situation is such thatwe have to cater to things thatchildren love to do, and sports, particularly basketball happens tobe a big part of their lives,” Hobsonsaid.

Although it’s not just basketballtalent that’s exalted in the league, itdoes play a big part and manyfabulous basketball players have

participated in the league over the years.Ronnie Fields, the skywalker from Farragutplayed in the league, as did current HoustonRocket and former Manley standout LutherHead. Sherron Collins, who starred at Crane, and recently won a national championship withKansas is still a regular at the gym when he’sin town, and the list of basketball stars who’veplayed in the league truly goes on and on.

“Sherron Collins got his christening here,”said Hobson. “But the best thing is that theyalways come back – these are their roots, andthis league is a big part of the community.”

Basketball has always been very popularin Chicago’s inner city, and its appeal isundisputable. But there are a host of activitiesthat parks can provide and Hobson is open toother activities as well.

“It’s more than basketball, because believeit or not basketball is not my favorite sport, softball is,” Hobson said. “We have to prickthe conscious of this community and find outfrom our children and our young people whatit is that we can provide for them that will helpthem stay off of these streets.”

Motorists operating vehicles in and aroundthe North Lawndale community should becareful how they operate a vehicle this Saturday.

The Chicago police department announcedover the weekend that officers will beconducting Roadside Safety Checks starting at8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18th. The checks willcontinue until 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

“The purpose of the program is toapprehend drivers who are operating vehicleswhile under the influence of alcohol and drugs,”said Superintendent Jody P. with pity and sympathy by a lovely desk clerk,Rachel (an eye-pleasing Mila Kunis) whohappens to be on the rebound from a failedrelationship.

The film is spiced and rounded off well bysemi-characters with their own agenda addedas sidebar to the proceedings Jonah Hill playsas the star struck waiter trying to get the rockerto listen to his demo tape and a nerdy newlywedhusband doubting his ability and seeking adviceto satisfy his sex hungry wife and an ineffectivesurf instructor (Paul Rudd).

All that are mostly woven into a breezy andlikeable pace by first time director NicholasStoller who delivers Segal’s informal scriptpeppered by his frontal nudity, pop culturereferences, show biz inside jokes and sight gagsthat fits the formula of success in previousApatow produced and co-written films.

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is quite funnywith some memorable lines and moments butsometimes the film is too laid back for itsoccasional bawdy attempts than expected. Butthis movie succeeds because of the honestdisillusionment in Segel’s role that not onlymakes this movie, but this is not only his story.

But it is part of everyman’s DNA and hisvulnerability from his misery that is madehilarious at his (Segel) expense that has core ofhonesty within his demeanor that connects withthe audience for its insight, humor and charm.R; 112min. A Universal Picture Release –presented at selected theaters

way.” During roadside checks, officers slow the

traffic flow, stopping cars at regular intervals, speaking with drivers and watching for signsof alcohol impairment and other violations.

The department also released the resultsof a DUI Strike Force patrol, in which fivedrivers were arrested for driving under theinfluence.

Police also announced that 15 drivers werecited for driving without insurance; 26 citationswere issued for various license violations; 21drivers received citations for speeding and 48other motorists were cited for a variety of trafficviolations.

During that effort, officers saturated a pre-designated area with roving police officers thatcontinually monitor vehicular traffic for signsof impaired driving. Patrols also place emphasison speeding, safety belt and alcohol-relatedviolations.

Police vehicles equipped for speeddetection were deployed to apprehend speedingviolators. In addition, the BAT Mobile Unit(Breath Alcohol Testing) was deployed to allowofficers to expedite the process of charging aperson with Driving Under the Influence priorto transporting an alleged offender to the nearestlockup for bonding.

The mobile unit also allows for Individual

Recognizance Bonds to be issued a the site ofthe saturation.

The purpose of the program is to saturatea pre-designated area with roving police officersthat continually monitor vehicular traffic forsigns of impaired driving. Patrols also placeemphasis on speeding, safety belt and alcohol-related violations. Police vehicles equipped forspeed detection are deployed to apprehendspeeding violators.

In the wake of increased violence reportedcitywide, the department also announced thatit will be deploying more officers fromadministrative duty to crime hot spots wheregang retaliations and random shootings arelikely to occur.

The early deployment of police officersfrom desk duty is one of the commitmentsMayor Daley announced as part of the 2008budget and is just one phase of a larger, broaderplan. Officers previously assigned toadministrative desk duty will immediately takeon patrol assignments focusing on areas whereshootings and gang activity have spiked. Policealso have accelerated the hiring plan of its nextrecruit class, which is scheduled to begin thismonth.

“Random shootings are the deadliestcrimes against our youth and residents, and withthe warmer weather ahead, the likelihood thatviolent crime will occur increase,” said Weiss.

“By deploying these offices in the rightplace at the right time now, we can eliminatethe potential for violence and begin identifyingsome of the crime patterns and violenceanticipated during the upcoming summermonths,” Weis concluded.

STREET KINGS (**) “Street Kings’ is adeliberate and gritty indictment on policecorruption that compromises itself through thevirtues of its lead character’s sudden moralchange. Keanu Reeves portrays Tom Ludlow, aveteran cop who works out of a precinct thatseems to reaching its boiling point within thesquad room

The precinct is controlled by Ludlow’s bossand mentor, Capt. Jack Wander (ForestWhitaker) whose success ratio is based on his“star pupil” to run reneged enough, while thecaptain keeps him from crossing the line. Even though in the film’s opening sceneshows Ludlow going “lone wolf” usingunorthodox methods and planting falseevidences to nail a group of men in a householding hostage twin Chinese girls in a smallcage behind the closet.

cautious-to-cranky because of what Ludlowmight do or say because of his reckless natureand previous association with his ex-partner,Detective Terrence Washington (Terry Crews)who together did their share of “dirt’ on thestreets. But now Washington has been talkingto Internal Affairs about the squad.

Eventually leads to an anticlimacticresolution in a predictable showdown betweenthe “star pupil” and his mentor that makes “StreetKings” a real disappointment because of thepedigree behind the film. David Ayers makinghis directorial debut who previous wrote“Training Day” teams up with James Elroy whogave us “L.A. Confidential”. Both know enoughabout tainted cops that should have hadsubstance and depth.

Both Ayers and Elroy gave us lots to chewon from those respected scripts and films. Butthere is something unclear in Reeves’ characterthat doesn’t complete the movie from the outset. While like what his character says in the movie,“It doesn’t matter how it happens. Itmatters more how we (the cops) write itup”.

Not only is there irony in thatstatement that relates to the movie itselfand its writers. But hell, fellows! Tell ussomething we don’t already know! R;108min, A Fox Searchlight PicturesRelease – presented at selected theaters

young people wandering the streets becausethey have nothing else to do. We, meaningeverybody, not just the Police Department orthe Park District, have to provide differentactivities for our young people,” Washingtonsaid.

Washington is also aware that it’s not justabout basketball, but providing an array ofopportunities for the youth that is vitallyimportant to helping them maintain a healthy

balance.“It could be music, it could be boy

scouts or girl scouts, or swimming.Basketball is not for everybody,”Washington said. “Everybody is notathletic so if a kid has the acting bug, oris into dancing, those things areimportant too. We have to look and seewhat’s out here and try to guide and

steer our young people toward those activities.”In the end the basketball league is all about

protecting and enhancing the lives of the youthof the west side. It’s not an easy task, but withthe help of volunteers and Park District staffthe possibilities that activities like thebasketball league provide are without limit asfar as molding young people and keeping themout of trouble. And in today’s often violentworld actually keeping them alive.

Hobson has worked with youth for mostof his adult life, but before that he was aCombat Platoon Sergeant during the VietnamConflict and in 1968-1969 he led more than

forty men into actual combat. Noneof his men under his command werekilled in action and he uses someof the same principles to obtainsuccess as head of the park’sprograms.

In Vietnam he told his troops:“If you listen to me and rememberwhat we did in training you have achance of coming back alive. Sureenough they listened to me and Inever lost a man. I had 47 menunder my command and I never losta single one. I don’t expect to loseany in here at (Garfield Park’sGolden Dome) either.”

The league is free of charge andthe rules and regulations aren’textensive or hard to adhere to.

“It’s free, and all they have todo is to show up. All I ask is thatyou come out here and act likeyoung men and women.”

overload of information that delayedregistration and scheduling that was a few hoursor even days for some students. Registrationof students is how CPS assigns teachers toschools and how school budgets get financed.

April 20 is the day the bean counters decideif the jar they are counting is half-full, half-empty or whatever. Therefore, the fact that thestudents were not there obviously causedproblems for Marshall. However the problem

is not with it alone, it is system-wide. Theadmissions dilemma creates not only financialproblems for the system, but also classassignment and a myriad of other problems thatover time will be solved. Education is the reasonthat everyone gathered together, but the story isdeeper. It is a story that involves the meaningof education and how to get it to meansomething to the black community once again.

Lornell Reid a student at ACT CharterSchool put it like this, “I think we need moreone-on-one tutors. We need more psychologistsand counselors. People think that we don’t haveproblems but we do and we keep it inside andwe need more people to help us solve ourproblems so that we can concentrate on ourschoolwork.”
