President’s Remarks

FHW – President’s Remarks. Change in Club Meeting day! Starting September our monthly club meeting will be on the second Thursday of each month, still at the Savage United Methodist Church. At this meeting in September, we will do the Savage YRE walk and have pizza with only essential business. One bit of club business to note is that our taxes have been accepted by the IRS, so we are good for another year there. In case you haven’t heard our new Atlantic Region director is Tom Jackson from Pennsylvania. Tom volunteered and was quickly elected. Tom is a great advocate of the common sense part of volksmarching and putting on events. In memory of Dave Scull, Freestate donated $100 each to the AVA and Rails-to-Trails Association. Although we haven’t put on an event in the last 2 months, we have been very busy. We had some group walks including one at St Mary’s City. Last week we also met and surveyed trails at the north tract of the Patuxent Research Refuge for a possible future event. The sights are nice, and a few of us also saw a Snowden family cemetery. This is the same Snowden family from Montpelier Mansion, where we are holding our next event on September 6th. Freestate continues our remembrance of 9/11. Thanks to Lynne Haffner for being this year’s POC. Please join us and look for the sign up sheet to help out. Thanks to Bob Lumbert, we have our YREs to include 3 new ones at Mount Airy, Fredrick, and Sykesville sanctioned for next year. This year it was especially challenging due to our turnover of YRE POCs. Welcome to our new YRE POCs Fred Pugh – Laurel, Lou Dimenna – Cambridge, Sue and Tom DeHetre – Indianhead, Melissa Mooney - Sykesville, Charlotte Lord - Frederick, Phill Wilder – Mount Airy, and Debbie Bourke - Ocean City. Thanks for stepping up to help us out. I’d like to challenge each of our YRE POCs to think of a date next year, when no regular events are scheduled, to hold a group walks of your YRE as a group activity. Please look for upcoming tribute events in memory of our fellow volksmarchers. On October 4th in Westminster, MD FHW plans to group walk at the pancake breakfast and walk for Carl Frock. This will be the last event of the Piedmont pacers. On October 11th at the Greenbelt MD walk event, a bike event has been added to honor Dave Scull. Please try to support these events. Another opportunity for a group walk is Friday October 17th when the Tater Tours come to town. They were planning to walk Brookside Gardens, but while the events and gardens are open, there’s no parking by the Visitor’s Center, so I suggested and they agreed, to walk our Savage YRE instead. If you are free around 9:00 on the 17th please join them at Savage. One other event to look out for is on December 13th in Annapolis for us in Maryland. The AVA is trying to have as many walkers as possible walking at 10:11 am, which will be 10:11 on 12/13/14. Then it won’t be long before we close out the year with our New Years events. The workers walks for the New Years events will be held on Veterans Day 11/11 at 9:00 and 1:00. Look for the sign up sheets and opportunities to help out. Please look for some new events next year and a continuation of one event or activity per month, with the help of our YRE POCs. We have sanctioned a February Black History Month event at Queens Chapel Church, in April a walk in conjunction with Tea and Arts festival at

Montpelier mansion, and another in Laurel in October. Looks for more details as we get closer to these events. Please join us for our Club Business meetings at 7:30pm the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. Please also attend our Events meeting at 6:30pm the first Thursday of the month at the Laurel-Russett Bob Evans for dinner and discussion, where you can help us with the direction of our events and activities. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we’d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn’t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it’s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. Event Details

SEP 6 - Montpelier Walk Event – Arts Center, 9650 Muirkirk Road, Laurel, Maryland 20708. Start time 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, finish by 4:00 PM. 10 Km and 5 Km Trails. This is a 9-11 Memorial walk remembers the victims of the Pentagon; Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and the World Trade Center. The trails are on natural surfaces through grounds of Montpelier and sidewalks of surrounding residential area - rated 1A. The trail includes Montpelier Arts Center; Montpelier Mansion, and Oxwell Park. See MAILER PAGE OF NEWSLETTER OCT 4 - Walk Honoring Carl Frock - Several members are traveling to Westminster for the Memorial/Breakfast Walk to honor Carl Frock, Jr. at the Church of the Ascension 23 North Court Street, Westminster, Maryland on Saturday, October 4, 2014, 10Km and 5Km Trails Rated 1A. Carl and Cindy were members of Freestate several years ago and supported Freestate activities. We would like to meet and have breakfast and start out on the trail together. Get to the Church at 8 a.m. start eating and get out on the trail by 9 a.m. This is the last walk of the Piedmont Pacers so let us support our fellow volkssporters.

October 25-26 - FIRST STATE WEBFOOTERS hosting the Annual Sea Witch & Fiddler’s Festival Walk in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Several club members plan to travel to the Eastern Shore and walk one of our YRE’s on Saturday (25), have dinner and stay at the Henlopen Hotel (with the “walker rate of $90), and walk the Rehoboth event on Sunday (26) - finishing in time for the dog parade. If you are interested please make your reservation. Limited rooms are available so don’t wait until the last minute. Henlopen Hotel, 511 North Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach, DE A “Walker Rates” Room Reservation can be made 1-800-441-8450, before the walk for this. Sea Witch weekend only. Tell them it is under “First State Webfooters” group. Start any time between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and finish before 5:00 p.m. This is a 10K (6.2 mi.) event with a 5K option available. Trail ratings: 1A (no significant difficulty and is stroller and wheelchair friendly). Pets are NOT allowed on the beach, and leash and scooper laws are enforced. THEME: Sea Witch Festival with parades, activities, and Treasure Hunt. SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Alternative Capitals, Classic American Diners, Honoring Our Flag, Lakes and Reservoirs, Trekking With the Trees, Water Towers, and Walking the USA A-Z.

Nov 11 - preparation for New Year Eve 2014 - Just a note to mark your calendar for prep (Nov) and event (Dec/Jan). We will send out information in November/December about volunteer times, baked-goods sales, etc. Brochure will be on the Meet-Up list and the AVA website. The volunteer/workers walk for this event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, 2014 (Veterans Holiday) at 9 AM, Owen Brown Community Center. Directions will be available for all trails.

Unusual date-time-alignment – 10:11 12/13/14 – a Unique Event – On December 13, 2014 the Annapolis Amblers Club is hosting a unique walk event. This combination of date and time will occur at 10:11 on that day (12/13/14) which will not repeat for some 91 years. Given the unique nature of this time/date combination, it was determined that AVA should have a national event that would get as many walkers as possible on the trail at 10:11 (their local time) on December 13, 2014. A special slug will be available for the stamp used for this national event and A-Award will be available from HQ AVA. Mark your calendars and let’s go walking.

Was Hippocrates a VOLKSWALKER? – submitted by a walker

Excerpt from Harvard Study - 2,400 years ago, Hippocrates said, "Walking is a man's best medicine." To find out if he was right, scientists in London performed a meta-analysis covering 20 years of peer-reviewed journals. After sifting through articles covering 460,000 participants they tracked participants who were free of cardiovascular disease when the study began. Each study collected information about the participants' walking habits and were tracked for an average of 11 years, during which cardiovascular events (angina, heart attack and failure, coronary artery bypass surgery, angioplasty, and stroke and deaths) were recorded. The meta-analysis makes a strong case for walking. Walking reduced the risk of cardiovascular events by 31%, and cut the risk of dying during the study period by 32%. Protection was evident even at distances of just 5½ miles per week and at a pace as casual as about 2 miles per hour. The people who walked longer distances, walked at a faster pace, or both, enjoyed the greatest protection. Smile Nothing broadcasts openness and friendship more than a big, broad smile. It shows we are welcoming at our events. Don’t be self-absorbed. Smile. Say Hello In Germany Bob greeted fellow volkssporters (and there were a lot of them) with a hearty “Gruss Gott” or “Guten Tag.” He continues that tradition saying hello on the trail in the States too. Imagine all volkssporters on the trail greeting each other. Imagine the message that would send to newcomers to our sport! Join a Club and Help Out If you haven’t taken this big step yet, join with nearby volkssporters—kindred spirits—to socialize. Meetings, group walks, parties and picnics, carpooling to nearby walks. Sharing stories is a great way to deepen your volkssport experience. And you can take it to the next level by volunteering at events: Greet participants with a smile, say hello, share your Volkssport stories when answering questions. These are just two more ways to be sociable around others you have yet to meet.

Join a Club and Help Out If you haven’t taken this big step yet, join with nearby volkssporters—kindred spirits—to socialize. Meetings, group walks, parties and picnics, carpooling to nearby walks. These are just two more ways to be sociable around others you have yet to meet Socialize at Events and on Trips How many volkssporters you seen who just come in, register, do the event, get their IVV books stamped, and leave—little or no conversation with anyone. Don’t be one of them. Smile at the volunteers at events and say hello to them; chat with them, and thank them for their service. Greet fellow participants on the walk, and stick around after getting your IVV books stamped to chat with other participants and share stories.

When you take a Volkssport trip, whether in an organized group or own your own, don’t leave these ways of being sociable behind. Would this make a difference in the sociability of events? We think so. How about you? Invite the Neighbors Don’t just be sociable within the Volkssport community. If you’re going to be infectious, take it to the streets. Tell your Volkssport stories to those around where you live. Invite them to an event; participate with them. Some volkssporters are so enthusiastic they buy newcomers New Walker Packets. Being sociable should be as important as carrying IVV books. It’s almost part of the AVA’s tag line: what’s the fun and fitness without the friendship? Take a New Walker for a Walk When you see new or free walkers at an event offer to walk with them. Being sociable could help make them dedicated volkssporters— that’s how we got started and fell in love with the IVV and Volkssport.

The Anatomy of a great walk event

includes collaborative Planning, Team-

work, and enthusiastic Execution.

IT BEGAN—Darrell Neily had an idea that

he presented to the Events Committee.

These are held the first Thursday evening

each month.

The Events Committee gave enough encour-

agement that Darrell went out and scouted

the North Tract of the Patuxent Wildlife

Research Center.

With his good communication and promis-

ing report, other members of the com-

mittee agreed to meet for a Trail Review.

So we had a fun time
