FHW – President’s Remarks.

It’s the time of the year to enjoy cooler walking weather and the colorful fall foliage.

While this year REI is no longer sponsoring OptOutside events on Black Friday, the

AVA is still encouraging events and will help advertise them. Freestate will do group

walks of our Laurel YRE on November 29th at 9:30 am for OptOutside. Please join

us to walk off some of your Thanksgiving dinner and as a break from shopping.

At our December 12th club meeting we’ll have a social gathering while conducting any

essential business. We will have some BBQ from Mission BBQ and ask those attending

to bring a dish or dessert. The main business will be final preparations for our next event,

which is our biggest events of the year on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

We’re back at the United Methodist church in Savage, MD at the main church building

for both days this year. The workers walks are planned for November 24th. Again we’ll

have four 5-KM trails for the events, and food sales. Please sign up to help.

Our January social dinner is taking shape. We are looking into the Stained Glass Pub in

Elkridge, Maryland on January 19th. This year expect less of a program, while still

enjoying the social event.

We have ideas for a couple events for next year and expect to sanction two or three

events, but have not yet sanctioned any. We need your ideas, and almost as important

your help in organizing events. We have club members to help with the details.

Mark your calendars for April 24 – 26, 2020 for the Atlantic Region conference and

events in the Columbia, PA area. These are always good events, and this is where my

mother is from, so I know the area well.

Here’s some AVA news of interest. 1) Anyone can now receive the Checkpoint from the

AVA. The Checkpoint is the main communication tool of the AVA National Office, and

has been emailed primarily to club officers. Send an email to Hector at [email protected]

to be added to the mailing list. 2) I encourage everyone to register for the new AVA

website my.ava.org. The OLSB has transitioned to this site and eventually AVA will

transfer all business. This site does have the “new look” event pages, although for those

who still like the old view you can present them that way also. We can and will now

have to upload our brochures associated with our events, and now can load photos of the

events and a few lines selling the highlights of the event. 3) Please note AVA members

can scan and submit our books electronically to [email protected] . You can and should

also submit your Record of Achievement along with your books. You can choose

whether you want patches, pins, certificates or none of these. The front of your book

must have your name, address, phone number and email address, and I’m sure your AVA

Record of Achievement number as well. So you can’t just put an address label on the

books like I do now. The Checkpoint has specific details that are helpful when

submitting your books electronically. You still can mail in your books to the AVA at the

address on the front of the book to the attention of Karen Winkle.

We are still looking for an events committee chair and a checkpoint coordinator. We

cover events in our club meeting, but have limited time for discussion. The event POCs

now do a little more coordination for checkpoint supplies, getting them from those of us

who are storing club assets. You help out Tom Mosely by storing the checkpoint

supplies for us.

Thank you, and see you on the trail.

Bob Wolfe

NEW YEAR’S WORKERS/VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

It’s that time of year when we are looking for volunteers to work at our New Year Events in Savage again this year. A sign-up list will be sent via the INTERNET in November for members and friends to volunteer. If you are not on the INTERNET and would like to volunteer call Bill or Linda Hassell at 410-437-2164. The list will be circulated at the November and December meetings. Kitchen help is also appreciated and will be on the volunteer sign-up.

Please be sure to bring baked-goods for sale for the walks on 12/31 and 1/1/20. This is a great way to get rid of the holiday cookies and candies. Freestate members are collecting warm winter adult hats, gloves, scarves and coats, in new or gently used condition. Items will be distributed to a charity for the needy in our area. Non-perishable food items also welcome.

What kind of legacy are you choosing to leave?

Sure you paid club dues, maybe. Yes, you paid walking fees for credit. But the next generation is DIGITAL and if we

want to leave a legacy of walking together, in safe interesting places, and promote comradery, we need to help the

AVA be transformed to capture our best remembered parts. Please don’t analyze endlessly —just DO IT!! Sign up for

the Friends of America’s Walking Club Sustained Giving Program. Help fund fitness programs that fight against obesi-

ty, diabetes, heart, disease, high blood pressure, cancer and depression. With as little as $5 a month, you have the

power to touch a life. Please give financial strength and stability to our parent organization by being part of the

President comments to AVA membership

This is a short note about a topic that we have discussed previously—change. There are times when change is essential. Recall

Blockbuster—they failed to change and from a peak in 2004 of 9,094 stores there is now only one physical Blockbuster in the

entire world (located in Bend, OR). While there are other examples of businesses that failed to change as the world changed

around them, I think you get the point. The curves that I showed in the “State of the AVA Nation” clearly show that AVA has

been on a downward trajectory for some time. It is obvious that we must make significant changes if we are going to survive.

We started making changes with the move to do business as AVA: America’s Walking Club. While we are proud of our Volks-

marching tradition and history, it was not resonating with our potential customers. We haven’t thrown away our tradition and

history, but we recognized that we needed to put the America’s Walking Club out in front if we were going to attract new folks.

…..which will you choose?
