Letter from our CEOThe past few months have been incredibly busy for us as we prepared and launched our fi rst ever Ultimate Lifestyle Lottery. This Lottery is our fi rst venture into this new and exciting space and as I write this, we’re eagerly looking forward to drawing and announcing our 6667 lucky prize winners.
The Lottery is just one of the ways we’re
continuing to raise the funds necessary to
continue our vital work with your support.
As we all know, the current economic
climate is a tough one for charities and
we are unfortunately not immune. We’ve
been overwhelmed by the response and
feedback you’ve given us during this fi rst
Lottery and can’t thank you enough for
your continued support as we look ahead.
There is still a lot of work to be done - we
know that currently one in two Australians
are diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
and we’re determined to change that.
Our standing as the state’s leading,
independent, evidence-based cancer
organisation and the only one fi ghting
every cancer from every angle is one we
are incredibly proud of. It is something we
couldn’t continue without you.
In WA alone there are almost 12,000 new
cases of cancer diagnosed each year –
that number is expected to rise. Currently,
over 83,000 West Australians living with
cancer need our help.
This year, around 4000 West Australians
will die from cancer – that is 4000 too
many. Too many of our fathers and
mothers, brothers and sisters, children,
friends and colleagues.
But we are making progress, the survival
rate for many common cancers has
increased by 30 per cent over the past
two decades and today the fi ve year
survival rate for some common cancers is
over 90 per cent.
There is still a long way to go until we live
in a world where cancer no longer turns
lives upside down, but we’re not giving
up. Through our world-class research
funding program, our prevention programs
and our vast range of information and
support services we are bringing the
defeat of cancer closer.
Every time you buy a Lottery ticket, make
a donation, take part in a Relay For Life
event, buy a Daffodil Day pin, become a
regular giver or host a Girl’s Night In or
Biggest Morning Tea - like many of you
featured in this edition of LifeLines have
done - you join us in our fi ght against
cancer.
On behalf of those you are helping,
thank you.

Biggest Morning TeaAustralia’s Biggest Morning Tea is always a perfect opportunity for friends, family or workmates to come together, share a cuppa and some delicious food to help those affected by cancer.
Year after year, your support has been
wonderful and this year was no different
with 2559 of you registering to host and
make your cup count. Many hosted on
the offi cial ABMT date, Thursday 26 May,
while others chose to host their soirees
throughout May and June.
Some familiar WA faces got on board,
too, heading to The Coffee Club
stores across Perth on the offi cial
day to make coffees and chat to
customers with $1 from every
drink sold coming directly to
us. Netballer Shae Brown,
Blogger Rayne Embley, Nine
News’ Scherri-Lee Biggs and
Tracy Vo and Perth Glory’s Alex
Grant were among some of
the newbie celeb baristas! And
thankfully, it seems many of you
love your morning brew! The Coffee
Club’s fi nal donation was an impressive
$10,000 – that’s a lot of drinks!
But it wasn’t just celebs – thanks to the
many of you who gathered at work, at
home, at school and with your community
groups to enjoy a cuppa for a cause, an
amazing $1.5m has been banked so far and
will go a long way in helping us beat cancer!
Take a look at some of the wonderful
morning teas held throughout the state
below. You can also check out our ‘Your
#BiggestMorningTea’ album on our

National Volunteer WeekNational Volunteer Week is one of our favourite weeks of the year – it gives us an extra excuse to celebrate the 2638 people who generously donate their time and skills to help us achieve our mission.
And it seems the benefi ts are mutual
- increasingly, volunteering is being
understood as one of the enduring
social, cultural and economic values
of our society and we love hearing
that our volunteers enjoy coming in as
much as we enjoy having them here!
Our volunteers are our greatest
assets - each and every one of them
brings a range of skills, knowledge
and experience to the organisation
and are very much part of our team.
If you’d like to know more about our
amazing volunteers, keep an eye out
for our ‘Thursday Thanks’ feature on
our Facebook and Instagram pages
where we introduce one of our
volunteers each week. They all have
incredible stories to share!
If you’re interested in volunteering with us, head to cancerwa.asn.au and search “Volunteer”

The past few months have been incredibly busy for our team as we launched our very fi rst Ultimate Lifestyle Lottery!
On May 11 we celebrated the
Lottery’s fi rst milestone with the
announcement of the three Early
Bird winners who each took
home a life-changing $100,000
cash. It was fantastic to hear their
shocked reactions when our Lottery
Ambassador, Monika Kos called
to tell them they had a winning
ticket. Even more wonderful was
hearing the reasons behind their
ticket purchases – each winner
mentioned their motivation was to
support us and none expected to
actually win!
The Lottery closes on July 27 with the winners to be announced on August 3.
With a huge 6667 prizes ready to be won it is a very exciting time here at CCWA!
We can’t wait to share the news
with the major prize winner who will
not only get to move into a brand
new, fully-furnished penthouse
apartment in North Fremantle
(valued at a HUGE $1.59 million)
but will also receive a BMW X1 and
$20,000 in cash!! It really is the
ultimate lifestyle.
But best of all, all proceeds from the
Lottery will help us
• Increase the reach and impact
of our cancer education and
support services
• Increase our investment in
cancer research
• Increase our advocacy work to
ensure the Government takes
action to reduce cancer in our
community
• Continue to improve cancer
outcomes for regional cancer
patients through early detection
and support services
We look forward to giving you a full
update on the thousands of lucky
winners next time – we hope you’re
one of them! In the meantime,
register your interest to be the fi rst
to know about our next lottery at

Three West Australian cancer researchers have been recognised for their signifi cant achievements in our third annual Research Excellence Awards.
The awards are unique in recognising those working in
cancer research in WA and cover three categories: Early
Career Cancer Researcher of the Year; Cancer Researcher
of the Year; and Cancer Research Career Achievement
Award. Each award attracts a cash prize for the selected
researcher to contribute to their work.
Our Early Career Cancer Researcher of the Year was
awarded to Belinda Guo, nominated for her contributions to
translational cancer research in WA.
Our Cancer Researcher of the Year was awarded to the
unsung hero of cancer research, Professor Wally Langdon.
For the past 30 years Wally has conducted cancer research
of the highest order with publications in many journals.
Our Cancer Research Career Achievement Award was
awarded to Associate Professor Steven Mutsaers in
acknowledgment of his considerable contribution in the
area of malignant mesothelioma, for which he is recognised
internationally for his work into the origin of the re-
generating mesothelial cell.
The three Research Excellence Awards are just one
element of the $4 million worth of research we’ve been
able to fund for the next year. It’s because of you that we’re
proud to be one of the largest independent funders of
cancer research in WA.
Other recipients included WA oncologist and cancer
researcher Dr Nicholas Gottardo who received a $400,000
Research Fellowship to help investigate a new class of
more effective chemotherapy drugs for children with the
brain tumour, Medulloblastoma.
Grants were also awarded
to talented students,
researchers early in their
career and teams of
high calibre researchers
to encourage them to
consider or continue with
a cancer research career
in WA.
Congratulations to all our
recipients – we can’t wait
to see the results of your
work and follow your
promising careers!

Unfortunately, most of us know someone affected by cancer. Daffodil Day is an opportunity to show our support for our loved ones, workmates and friends who’ve been affected and do something to help others avoid the same heartache.
On Friday 26 August, we’re asking the
entire state to get involved by making
a donation or purchasing a pin or
fresh daffodil.
This year’s theme is ‘For someone I
know’ and for the fi rst time you’ll able
to use your phone or head online to
dedicate a virtual daffodil to someone
special to you.
On the day you’ll fi nd us and our
volunteers at shopping centres across
the state, and throughout the city
selling fresh daffodils, pins, pens and
Dougal Bears – we’d love to see you!
Workplaces are also encouraged to
get involved by asking their teams to
wear yellow on the day and donate to
the cause.
To do your part to spread the
word about Daffodil Day, upload a
picture of you wearing your pin to
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
and tag us using the offi cial hashtags
#cancercouncilwa and #daffodilday.
For more information about where you can purchase a pin or daffodil on the day or to order merchandise to sell at your workplace in the lead up, visit daffodilday.com.au. If you’ll be in the Perth metro area on Friday 26 August and would like to volunteer as part of our street appeal team, please contact our fundraising team on 1300 65 65 85.

On February 4 our Cancer Information and Support Services team hosted a morning tea to mark World Cancer Day – a global awareness day to encourage cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. The primary goal of World Cancer Day is to signifi cantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020.
Taking place under the tagline ‘We Can. I Can’,
World Cancer Day 2016-2018 explores how
everyone – as a collective or as individuals – can
do their part to reduce the global burden of
cancer. Just as cancer affects everyone in different
ways, all people have the power to take various
actions to reduce the impact that cancer has on
individuals, families and communities.
You can get involved in our peer support programs and help those who are going through a similar cancer experience in the following ways:
Supporter Hotline 1300 65 65 85 | www.cancerwa.asn.au
To dedicate a daffodil to someone you know, text HOPE to 1999 8877 and a $5/sms donation will automatically be added to your mobile bill – we’ll then send you a follow-up text message where you’ll be given the option to personalise and share your daffodil dedication. You’ll also be able to make your daffodil dedications via Facebook and the Daffodil Day website.
