Letter from the PresidentI would like to thank all the people thathelped in redoing the CGSB fencespecifications. It was a bigger project thanI thought it would be, but I am proud toannounce that the government has the 4sections and it has now gone to public

review from October 28th to December 27th.From that point we review the public comments and, wherenecessary, make adjustments and changes. After that it goes toballot. Our goal was to try and have this ready for our AGM, but itwill not happen. Our new goal, after talking to our governmentrepresentative, is April. I am not sad or disappointed at all; I amecstatic that we, as a great group, have made this happen!

Now on to another subject: has everyone seen our new strategicplan? If not, contact me at the email address written below. The

plan was constructed partly using the answers from aquestionnaire sent to our members. For those that did seeit, what do you think and how are you going to be a part ofthis new project to make it happen??? For those that havenot read it yet, plan on how you think you can help whenreading it. We have one of the best trades in the world. Let'smake it great and have an association that has teeth.

On another note I received an email from one of ourmembers that didn't know we had scholarships that wegive out every year. They read it in my last letter. Theapplication form is on our website and we encouragepeople in our trade to apply.Hope everyone is having a great year and all is well. Cheers!

APHORISMS FOR THE YEAR ...It’s not whether you win or lose, But howyou place the blame. We have enough “youth”. How about afountain of “smart”?A Fool and his money can throw one heckof a party.

Money isn’t everything. But it sure keeps the kids in touch. If at first you don’t succeed, Skydiving is not for you.We are born naked, wet and hungry. Then things get worse.Red meat is not bad for you... Fuzzy green meat is bad for you.The latest survey shows that Three out of Four people make upto 75% of the population.

Storing picturesI am assuming that most of youuse photographs for yourbusiness; to present to clients, place on websites andadvertisements and even tocapture important moments inyour day to day business. Inorder to store your picturesefficiently and safely, here are afew suggestions.

Name your files:Create a folder labeled (guesswhat?) “Photos”. Create foldersin it and label appropriately.Label the actual photos withevent and date. Makes it easierto find the one you are lookingfor.

Create Multiple Backups:Use an online storage system. You can log into this no matterwhere you are. Dropbox is acommon and easy to use siteand can be set to automaticallyupdate whenever a new photois added to your computer.

Upload the pictures to a photosharing site such as Flickr. Thiscan be marked “private” so thatonly colleagues you havegranted access to can see themor “public” to share with anyonevisiting your page.

Purchase an external hard driveand back your files up on aregular basis. If you have agazillion pictures it is best tostore the majority of them onyour external drive (keepingonly your most used ones onyour computer) which helpsyour device to run moresmoothly.

It is ideal to have five types ofbackup. The more importantthe pictures, the more it isworthwhile to have multiplebackups. The time invested indoing this is priceless.

Remember!A picture is worth a thousandwords, so choose and use withcare!

Publisher’s NoteWinter is on its way with blustery winds, barebranches on the trees and short dayssurprising us with early darkness. Christmas,as I write, is only 5 weeks away, a sign that2016 is coming to an end. I hope that it was asuccessful year for everyone in the fence

business and that the coming year will be even better.

This time of year gives us reason to pause, take stock of our lives andsometimes decide on new directions. Our world has become morechaotic and unpredictable although we, in Canada, are relativelyunaffected physically by it. Even so, it does affect us as we grieve forthose affected by wars, earthquakes and famine.

What can we do apart from supporting the charities springing fromthese events? One theme I have been seeing over and over is to be alittle kinder, not only to our friends and families (although that can bechallenging ☺), but also to strangers we pass or interact with, howeverbriefly. We don’t know the effect a smile will have, or the respect shownin holding a door for someone or letting someone go ahead of you inline at the grocery store. Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do greatthings, but we can do small things with great love”. That small act mightalter someone’s life for the better even if you never know the result.Wishing you and your families a joyful Christmas and peace and joy toall of you celebrating other holy days at this time.

Focus GroupAllyson Newburg from Fast Fence in Toronto who has been acontributor to Fence Focus in the past, recently suggested thatwe might form a focus group of people from differentcompanies who would be willing to share insights gained fromrunning their own businesses. The idea was to ask a questionbefore each issue from each company involved and compilethe answers into a small article.

An example of possible questions could be:. The top three ways your company stays engaged on social media

. How do you think the CFIA boosts your business?

. Twitter…..a boost or a bane?

Allyson says she personally would be interested in some ofthe answers and it would encourage knowledge sharingamongst members.

I think it has potential but it all depends on you. If anyone isinterested in experimenting with this, please contact me [email protected]

Those Darn Viruses! Just last week I opened a link on Facebookand my computer froze, alarm bells went offand I was informed that I should call Windowsat a 1-800 # to get help. The message said notto shut down my computer which Iimmediately did by forcing it to close. Iswitched it back on after a few minutes butthe computer was still in the same frozenstate. My husband came to the rescue and wasable to run a virus scan which detected aboutfifteen viruses which were then removed. Ihave spoken to a few other people who havealso experienced this same event. This didn’thappen through an email but the followinginformation from the police might help toavoid these nasty experiences.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning ofthe dangers presented by emails and certainattachments as part of its ongoing CyberSecurity Awareness campaign.

According to a release from the OPP. readingthe contents of an email should be safe if youhave the latest security patches, but emailattachments can be harmful. Email phishingscams can trick you into opening attachmentsor giving up personal information. Theyappear to be emails from people, organizations or companies you know ortrust, but they're often the gateway to identitytheft by automatically installing malware, viruses, worms, and trojans. In someinstances, email attachments are disguised asletters of reference, resumes or informationrequests can infiltrate and affect businessesthat are involved in legitimate hiringprocesses. Also known as “spearphishingcampaigns”, high-value corporate and

governments have been targetedthrough email attachments to takeadvantage of previously-unknownsecurity vulnerabilities.

Many email servers will performvirus scanning and removepotentially dangerousattachments, but you can’t rely onthis. The easiest way to identifywhether a file is dangerous is byits file extension, which tells youthe type of file it is. For example,a file with the “.exe” file extensionis a Windows program and shouldnot be opened. Many emailservices will block suchattachments. Other file extensionsthat can run potentially harmfulcode include “.msi”, “.bat”, “.com”,“.cmd”, “.hta”, “.scr”, “.pif”, “.reg”,“.js”, “.vbs”, “.wsf”, “.cpl”, “.jar”and more.

In general, you should only openfiles with commonly-usedattachments that you know aresafe. For example, “.jpg” and“.png” are image files and shouldbe safe. Document files extensionssuch as “.pdf”, “.docx”, “.xlsx”, and“.pptx” and should also be safe —although it’s important to havethe latest security patches somalicious types of these files can’tinfect systems via security holesin Adobe Reader or MicrosoftOffice.

If you or a business suspectsthey’ve been a victim of‘spearfishing’, contact your localpolice service or the CanadianAnti-Fraud Centre.

The UNDERGROUND WORLD

By Terry Murphy, C.L.M.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT!Have you ever listened to something on the radio ortelevision or read an item in the newspaper and you say toyourself “this can’t be true, it must be a mistake”!. Then youread it again and say yes,” this is wrong as it doesn’t makesense”. That’s the reaction that I had when I read the recentstatistics from the 2015 ORCGA’s DIRT Report. (DamageInformation Reporting Tool).

IS THE 2015 DATA REVERSED?The item that I am referring to is the key statistics on utilityhits for 2015. Utility hits for the Green Industry (Landscaping,Fencing, Irrigation, Waterways and Agriculture) in Ontario isreported as 15 % of the total hits while the public / homeowners is reported as 12% of the total. To me, it seems thatthe numbers should be reversed. Let me explain mythinking.

The homeowner in general doesn’t even think about theunderground when they are planting in their garden. Theydon’t understand damage prevention; they don’t know thatthere are $Billions of dollars of buried infrastructureeverywhere; they don’t think underground safety whenplanting a tree or shrub that they have just purchased fromtheir local garden centre or nursery; and you have about 15million population in Ontario. On the other hand, you have aprofessional industry that knows it is the law that you mustobtain locates by calling ON1CALL before you dig; handdigging is mandatory in the tolerance zone (1 meter oneither side of the buried utility); substantial fines andpenalties exit if you strike a buried utility; and that there arean estimated 10,000 excavating firms in the province. Itwould seem to me that this professional, knowledgeable, and experienced industry would have far fewer hits that JoePublic, who has probably never thought about this issue. Infact it is that it is the reverse, with the professional industryhaving more hits than the homeowner. With a total numberof 4434 hits in Ontario in 2015, the homeowner had 12 % or532 hits while the Green Industry had 15 % or 665 hits. Bothare very high and increased greatly over the 2014 levels. Thisis due to new companies reporting due to the introductionof Bill 8 in the Ontario Legislature.

OTHER STATS ARE HARD TO BELIEVE!One of the things that I pay very close attention to is theroot cause of utility hits. In other words, what is the mainreason for so many hits? We are always looking to what arethe main reasons for so many underground utility hits andwhy are they on the increase. Again, I find it very hard tobelieve that year after year, the main reason for most hits isbecause the contractor (Fencing and Landscaping andIrrigation) did not call ON1CALL for locates. Last year 40% of

all hits was for this main reason (2 out of every 5). Askyourself this question. With the ON1CALL service free, withlocates being provided within 5 business days, and finesand damages to the contractor for hits ranging from$3000to $15,000, why would a contractor not call for locatesbefore they dig? This I find hard to believe yet it happensalmost every year. Some things just don’t change!

Secondly, 33% of all hits are due to poor or faultyexcavation practices by the contractor. This is anotherstatistic that baffles me. How can a contractor not get itright with so much at stake? Contractors work within thetolerance zone on every job so why are there any hits at all?I can understand when working in hard clay that it is veryeasy to cut, scrape, or fracture a plastic pipe. However withhyrdrovac technology available, let these experts handlethe excavation in the tolerance zone. Why take a chance? However, we still have a very high percentage of damagesdue to poor excavation techniques. With these two rootcauses alone, it accounts for over 70% of all damages, Whatis surprising, it seems to be the same two root causes eachyear.

CONCLUSIONThe reason we want more people to become members ofthe ORCGA is to help us educate and train the public andexcavating contractors. We need these root causes to begreatly reduced in numbers and we can do this byrepeating our spring Dig Safe events and continuing thefocus at industry meetings and functions. We are alsoplanning to be in the National Home Show and CanadaBlooms Show in March, 2017 to promote our damageprevention and Dig Safe message to the trade and thepublic.

With the Landscape Ontario 2017 Congress and FencecraftTrade Show just around the corner (Jan 10, 11 and 12, 2017)please note that we have introduced “The ORCGA SpeakersCorner” to the event. This is a chance to sit at a free series oftalks on the damage prevention industry. If you areattending the show, please pick up a calendar of the ninetalks that we have scheduled ( 3 for each day) for yourinformation and knowledge. All talks are by damageprevention professionals.

Please share this information with your colleagues and let’shope that we can have fewer hits in the future and no lossof lives in the process. Remember, it costs nothing to makea 2 minute call to ON1CALL to get locates before you dig.See you at Congress

Blast from the Past

CETAThe Comprehensive and Economic TradeAgreement recently negotiated between Canadaand the European Union has many Canadianbusinesses sitting up and taking notice.

The deal between Canada and the EU would openmarkets between 500 million EU citizens and morethan 35 million Canadians – but how does thataffect the various industries in Canada?

The main change in trade will be the elimination orreduction of tariffs both on exports from Canadaand imports from Europe.

For Canadian firms that export to Europe, they canexpect an increased market share, and hopefullysome more jobs in Canada for those companies.

A joint Canada-EU study also suggested theeconomic benefit of the agreement would beequivalent to creating almost 80,000 new jobs orincreasing the average Canadian household’sannual income by $1,000.

Among CETA’s provisions, Canadian products incertain sectors—ranging from consumer electronicsto major machinery, requiring certification to besold in Europe—will be able to undergo testing inCanada to EU standards.

Canadian services providers will benefit from thegreatest access the EU, the world’s largest importerof services, has ever provided in a trade agreement,as well as the most ambitious commitments ontemporary entry the EU has ever granted.

Canadian services in areas such as professional, environmental and construction services will havemore access to the EU market than those of any othercountry. Temporary workers such as contract servicesuppliers and corporate transferees will be allowed entry to theEU, while the region’s $3.3-billion procurement market, thelargest in the world, “will be open to Canadian businesses to takefull advantage of.”

Companies looking to take advantage of CETA should begin byevaluating their prospects for doing business in the EU market. Anew CETA web page offered by the Canadian TradeCommissioner Service (TCS) is a good place to start. There areeasy-to-understand explanations of key provisions of theagreement. If you conclude from your initial assessment that youmay have business opportunities in the EU, the next step is tocontact a trade commissioner at one of five regional offices inCanada or at any of the 26 missions in the EU offering businessservices to Canadian clients.

Of course, there is much more to this agreement thanmentioned here, both positive and negative. It would be worthyour while to do some more digging if your business is likely tobenefit from this new trade deal.

Most of this information was gleaned from a Government ofCanada website: http://tradecommissioner.gc.ca/canadexport.

EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYERS GET HEALTHIER TOGETHER ...Creating and sustaining a culture of workplace health andwellness is a shared responsibility and reward.

Some of the responsibilities include:. Educating those responsible for the safety and wellbeing of employees.

. Search for existing programs and support for the workplace.

. Implement recommended guidelines for safer and healthier workplaces.

Some of the rewards might include:. Healthier, happier and more engaged workforce. Improved customer experience. Focus on prevention rather than correction

Whether you are a large international company or a smallfamily one, the responsibility remains the same. It is notthe responsibility of a company to make people happy butif your company is thoughtlessly or unjustly causingunhappiness, that is another story. The company thatcovers all of its bases with regard to employee safety and ahealthy (both physically and emotionally) environment ismaking a hefty investment in its bank of successfulcompany.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS are a bit likebabies: They’re fun to make but extremely difficult tomaintain. Although the practice has fallen by thewayside in recent years, many people still, eachJanuary, resolve to better themselves in some way.About 75% of people stick to their goals for one weekor less. The rest are still struggling six months later. It's hard to keep up the enthusiasm!

The most common reason for participants failing theirNew Years' Resolutions was setting themselvesunrealistic goals, while some didn't keep track of theirprogress and others completely forgot about settinggoals at all. Goal? What goal?

One study showed that 88% of people who set New Yearresolutions fail, despite the fact that more than halfwere confident they were going to keep them. It alsofound that men achieved their goal more often whenthey set measurable amounts, for example, to lose 1lbper week instead of “losing weight”. Women tended tosucceed more when they made their goals public thusgetting support from their friends and colleagues.

Along with “first footing” (a Scottish custom where thefirst person to cross your threshold after midnight onHogmanay (New Years’ Eve) has to bring a piece of coaland a bit of black bun (Fruitcake) to wish the host “langmay your lum reek” (may you always have heat in yourhome) and food a plenty, New years’ resolutions may begoing the way of the dinosaur.

Still, all is not lost, as many people are now aware ofgoal setting all year round, not just once a year. I thinkthis is a healthier practice because it doesn’t let you offthe hook until next January. When you fail, you dustyourself off and immediately start again if the goal isimportant to you.

Sure, it is fun to have some New Year’s resolutions butbear in mind that goal setting is like a ship’s compass. We go off course and may even be grounded on therocks if we don’t check the compass from time to time.Guid New Year everyone and lang may yer lum reek!

Inductance Loop Myths - Part 2solid wire will offer better loop performance. So why usestranded wire at all? Well the one great advantage thatstranded wire has over solid wire is its flexibility.Flexibility is needed for the lead-in run of the loop. Sothe lead-in should always be made with stranded wire.

Another point to consider when weighing the pros andcons of solid wire vs. stranded wire is skin effect. Skineffect describes the interesting way that AC (alternatingcurrent) travels down conductors, at higher frequenciesthe current only travels through the outer edge of around conductor. The easiest way to imagine what skin

effect looks like is tothink of the currenttravelling only aroundthe outer skin of aconductor – theconductor is used like ahollow tube, all thecopper in the center ofthe conductor isignored. Loop detectorswork at frequencieswhere skin effectoccurs, this means solidgauge wires will givebetter performance.

quality of BD Loops is unparalleled. BD Loops products areavailable through over 400 distributors in the U.S. and Canada.Visit www.BDLoops.com to find a distributor near you.

Myth #6: Loops only detect magnetic materials.Inductance loops do not detect magnetism, theydetect inductance. Inductance describes how wellan object conducts electricity. Metal tends to be anexcellent conductor, which is why loops detectmetal objects. Loops do detect ferrous metals(magnetic), but loops also detect nonferrous(nonmagnetic) metals such as aluminum andcopper. Don’t install loops under an aluminum gatethinking the loops won’t detect it. Bottom line - ifthe material can conduct electricity, loops will reactto such material.

Myth #7: Wire Gauge does not matter in loopdesign. What is most bizarre about this myth is its power tocause people to over look basic obvious electronicprinciples. It is understandable why anyone wouldwant to believe that wire gauge doesn’t matter –you can save money by wrapping your loops out ofhigher gauge (thinner) wire! Unfortunately, sizedoes matter. The most basic explanation on whywire gauge matters is because the thinner a wire is(higher gauge) the more resistance there will be tothe flow of current. More resistance means moreenergy loss, which means weaker/less reliabledetections. Higher gauge (thinner) wires can causeserious problem in larger loops, or loops with longlengths of lead-in. It is best to use 16 AWG or thicker(smaller wire gauge) for inductance loops.

Myth #8: Only stranded wire should be used forinductance loops. It is a simple fact that when your compare theelectrical characteristics of a solid wire vs. strandedwire of the same gauge the solid wire will have lessresistance than the stranded wire. This means that
