Analysis
Type: The type of documentary is mixed as it has a variety of
interviews, archive and actuality footage (filmed by the producers).
Theme: The themes are music and the music industry, the
comeback of Meatloaf, music marketing and success and
the power of the media influencing its audience.
There is a male narrator as 'the voice of god' as he is not on screen through the documentary.
The documentary is non linear as it did not follow a specific chronological order.
There were no unanswered questions during the documentary which gives it a closed narrative structure.
It is single stranded as there is only one narrative thread as it
evolves around music/ meatloaf.
An establishing shot is used at the introduction of the documentary to show location and to set the scene.
The medium close up and close up shots used in the interviews
alongside the rule of thirds (framed off centre) which follow the interview codes and conventions.
The interviewees eyes are a third of the way down the screen
which also follows the rule of thirds. The interviewee is also sat off centre to the camera.
Mid shot, close ups and extreme close ups are used to
emphasise detail in the documentary.
Point of view shots are used to show other peoples views and
opinions towards the topics.

keep the documentary visually interesting.
It follows the codes and conventions of interviews
for example the rule of thirds. All of the interviewees are smartly dressed to show they are
professional and important.
The backgrounds of music related imagery such as album
covers and colours related to magazines of the same genre.
Background also anchors the relevance of the person
currently speaking about the topic.
The voice over works conventionally and holds the narrative together.
The songs used are from the band Meatloaf and are therefore relevant to the topic.
There is some ‘dark’ non-diagetic sound playing in the background of the video footage.
Sound Effects/ other music tracks such as YMCA, Village People, Mr Blobby and Jingle Bells which are all relevant to the year.
The narrator is male and spoke in standard English, there is no slang or colloquialism. He also has a calm tone of voice which shows sophistication and a more informal tone.
The use of cuts/cutaways are used to move the documentary along quickly.
There is a dissolve of the interviewee into the shot.
The cutaways are used to crop the interviewers question out of
the footage and to cover the jump cuts.
The montage at the beginning of the documentary is used to
attract and keep the audiences attention, so it is kept visually
interesting.
Footage from Meatloaf's music videos, concerts, behind the scenes, interviews, photographs, Brit Awards, Top of the Pops,
Grammy Awards and numerous magazine covers, album
covers, posters and websites.
This is used to not only introduce the topic but also to support
the topic and illustrate what is being talked about.
During the interviews graphics are used to show the name and relevance of the interviewee, such as their profession or
relevance to the topic.
There are opening titles which is unconventional for this type of
documentary.
The graphics also anchor the location of the documentary.
