comfortably taking the Leading

Player award ahead of the ever-

consistent Glenn McKay (16-4).

B3 Grade

Dromana (David Howard, Erich

Ludewig) def. Rye (Kyle Martin,

Carrie Marrs)

Bronze Medal: Mt Eliza (Andrew

Yeo, Shane Mason)

Erich and David after taking out

the gold.

Leading Player: David Howard (16-

4)

Dave continues to work his way up

through the grades and was a well

deserving winner of the Leading

Player award in this division. John

Peelo 14-6, Andrew Yeo (13-7)

made sure that David did not have

things all his own way during the

course of the season.

C1 Grade

Frankston (Brendan Elliget, Max

Kawecki) def. Balnarring (Peter

Williams, Sandra Eaton)

Bronze Medal: Dromana (Wendy

Kings ton, Stephen Leng)

Max and Brendan

Leading Player: Brendan Elliget and

Ben Meneill (both15-3)

Congratulations to Brendan and Ben

who couldn’t be separated at the

end of the season and will both

share the Leading Player award.

After being runner up last season,

Brendan went one better to share

the award this season. Other good

performances came from Sandra

Eaton with 14 wins from her 20

matches and Peter Williams (13-7).

C2 Grade

Rye (Harry Rispin, Margaret

Johnson) def. Langwarrin (John

Blaze, Will Lyons)

Bronze Medal: Mt Martha (Bec

Dickson, Zane Bradbery)

JANUARY 2013

Margaret and Harry

Leading Player: Will Lyons (14-4)

Will and partner John Blaze fought

it out for the Leading Player trophy,

with John (13-7) just being pipped

at the post. Bec Dickson also had a

good season finishing with 11 wins

from her eighteen matches.

Handicap Div. 1

Tyabb (Shaun Collins, Jim Furness

& Lucas Seguel def Rye (Nick

Davern, Juan Carlos Seguel & Terry

Kingston)

Bronze Medal: Balnarring (Craig

Beilken, Simon Dewar & Jos

Mathot)

Lucas, Jim & Shaun)

Leading Player: Nick Davern (24-3)

After sharing the award last season

Nick had it all to himself in the

spring although Juan Carlos was hot

on his heals and finished with 21

wins from his 30 matches.

Handicap Div.2

Langwarrin (Ron Summer, John

Debernardi & Guenter

Steinbrecher) def. Mt Eliza (Ken

Scott, Mark Rancnik & Ben

Knights)

Bronze Medal: Dromana (Jay

Debernardi, Tom Albiston & Chris

Eadie)

Guenter, John and Ron

Leading Player: David Howard (23-

7)

Dave Howard is on the look out for

a bigger trophy cabinet after adding

the Leading Player award in this

grade to his B3 grade trophy. Other

notable performances in this

division came from Ron Summer

(22-8), Ken Scott, who always

seems to be up the top of the

Leader boards (20-10) and the

seemingly ageless John Debernardi

who recorded 20 wins from 27

matches played.

Handicap Div.3

Mt Eliza (Wendy Kingston, Hugh

Cole-Sinclair) def. Langwarrin

(John Sierak, Rodney Graham,

subbing for Harry Rispin)

Bronze Medal: Mornington (Lydia

Sullivan, Wendy Kingston)

Gold medalists, Hugh and Wendy

Leading Players: Wendy Kingston

(15-3) & Lydia Sullivan (15-1)

Wendy returned to competition

after a winter in the sun with

husband Terry and took no time

returning to form. Lydia Sullivan

enjoyed a stellar season and would

probably have had the award all to

herself if she had not missed a few

games.

Sue Pitson also deserves a mention

after registering what I think was

her first win since joining the club.

Sue will find like all of us that

practice and persistence pays off in

this game and I’m sure she’ll win

many more if she sticks it out.

NEW FACES

We are pleased to welcome the following new players to our pennant ranks:

B1 Grade - Barry McKay

C2 Grade - Cahal Freestone, Shirley Hanton, Sally McLeod & Rebecca Kingston

Handicap Div.1 - Trevor Watkins

Handicap Div.2 - Joshua Watkins, Caleb Watkins & Nathan Castles

Handicap Div.3 – Brendan Bastin & Ernie Brennan

In addition we have Derek Williams (A2) and Joshua Kaiser (H’Cap. Div.2) returning to competition after a break)

TABLE TENNIS TIPS

If drawn to play on a court fitted out with our new LED lighting, find a reason to point out something to your opponent on the ceiling just before play commences.

There is a very good chance that he or she will temporarily lose their sight and if you start the game without delay, you should be able to win a few easy points as your opponents eyes recover from temporary blindness.

AUSTRALIAN VETERANS TOURNAMENT

This year’s tournament was held in Canberra and the club was represented by Ken Johnson, Jim Furness, and for the first time, some younger veterans, namely

Mark Flavel, Phil Bolitho and Shane O’Connor.

Ken Johnson was the shining star at this tournament winning the Australian 0/80 singles title. Yes as hard as it is to believe when you watch Ken getting around the court, our ex president has turned 80 and is a shining example of how good the game is for maintaining your fitness.

JUNIORS

Between 30-35 players have regularly attended our Friday night sessions in 2012 and Colin Sim who is our new junior co-ordinator is hoping to increase these numbers substantially in the coming year. The club is particularly keen to promote the sport to young female players, so if you know of anyone who may be interested, make sure you encourage them to get in touch with the club.

The top 10 ranking juniors in 2012 were: (1) Hugh Campbell (2) Will Maloney (3) Lydia Sullivan (4) Luka Filardo (5) Kyle Martin (6) Ben Knights (7) Cahal Freestone (8) Dylan Martin (9) Jamie Wood and (10) Aiden McFaul
