President’s Message

Jack m. Woodside Club president

This is the last opportunity for me to address the members of Meridian Hills through the Newsletter. I would like to begin by thanking our members, our committees and our staff for their hard work and support over the course of a busy and successful 2010. On behalf of Steve Stitle, Mike Bova and myself, it has been our distinct pleasure to serve MHCC over the past three years and all of us remain committed to helping insure the long-term success of Meridian Hills.

As has been discussed several times, the future of the country club in today’s social and economic environment is somewhat guarded. The successful clubs will be the ones that can adapt to the needs of their members and provide services that are a good value and maintain the flexibility to adapt to the needs of their members. That premise has served as a focal point for the Board as we have worked to make Meridian Hills the best club possible not just in the near term but well into the future.

I would like to thank Jack Barber, our Golf Professional; Kevin O’Laughlin, our Club Manager; Ludo Aaron, our Tennis Professional; Jim Hess, our Golf Superintendent; and Chef Joe Miller, our Executive Chef, for their commitment to Meridian Hills and their ability to “go with the flow” during the improvements.

I would like to express special thanks to Todd Hillman, the Chairman and to the rest of the Finance Committee who have guided us through these challenging time. We are grateful to them for sharing their expertise and for all their hard work.

I also thank you, the members, for the flexibility that everyone exhibited as we worked out the logistics of our remodeled facilities. While we have made physical changes at the Club, we believe we have continued to focus on value; the value as perceived by our members and as determined by the next generation of members.

It has been a privilege to serve this Club as President. I offer special thanks to my Committee Members and to the Board Members for their hard work. We have worked every day to make the Club better. Through these efforts we believe we have secured Meridian Hills Country Club as the premier country club in Indiana. It has been a tremendous honor to serve as your president and I know our club will be in good hands under the leadership of Mark Ford and the Board of Directors as they move forward next year. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Thank you,Jack Woodside

The end of the Club’s fiscal year and the end of my two year term as the Chairman of the Membership Committee is a good time to reflect on our accomplishments, thank the people who made it happen and provide you with an update on the status of membership in our Club.

A few years ago, the Membership Committee began hosting prospective member open houses, designed as a tool for members to introduce their friends to the Club in a casual environment where they could learn more about the Club. Initially we held one in the Spring and this year was the first also held in the Fall. Members caught on to the idea, making the Fall Open House a success with about ten prospective families who attended and at least half of them who plan to submit an application. The Membership Committee is sincerely thankful for every member who invited guests to one of these events over the past few years. Not only have the open houses exposed prospective members to the Club, but they’ve also created awareness amongst the membership regarding the importance of their role in securing quality new members.

In the past few years, members have approached me about the seemingly increasing activity of acquisition of new members. In actuality, the awareness of membership activity has improved, yet the actual number of new members we’ve obtained this year is less than last year. The point you should remember is that the number of new members the Club gains isn’t as important as our rate of attrition. Some members see a significant number of new member postings, but don’t realize we have members who resign due to relocation or to a time in a members life when their priorities change. Although we didn’t obtain as many new members as we did last year, our rate of attrition decreased from 1.4% to .7%. These values are hard to comprehend until they’re compared to the national average of country club’s our size, which was 3% attrition last year. As you can see, Meridian Hills is holding its own and needs to continue to focus on membership.

As I close my three year term of office, I’d like to share my appreciation for the time and input dedicated by my fellow committee members who have also fulfilled their three year role on the committee. Holly Hapak Betz has been a tremendous asset to the committee and for our Club. Being so involved in the community, Holly introduced a number of qualified candidates to the Club and each time we discussed important topics she helped us analyze every facet of the effects of our decisions. Another valuable member coming off of the committee is Jerry Moss. If you know Jerry, you sense the respect, tact and pulse he possesses in regards to pertinent topics and how they relate to membership in Meridian Hills. We are all very fortunate to have had Holly and Jerry represent us in the highest regard.

Serving on the Membership Committee has been an honor and I sincerely thank everyone who’s supported our membership endeavors by encouraging a friend to join or by sponsoring a new member. Members like you who are securing a bright future for our Club.

from tHe superiNteNdeNt’s desK I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire membership for their support throughout this season. The summer of 2010 will not fade from my memory anytime soon, no matter how hard I try. The good news is the golf course has rebounded very well from the harshest Indiana summer that we have seen in many years. We will once again go to temporary greens once the ground freezes for the winter. This helps ensure good putting surfaces for next year. Please respect this policy and stay of the greens once the pins have been moved to the approaches. It is also very important that all ball marks get fixed this time of year and divots replaced. The turf is not growing enough to recover from the damage unless we help it along the way. We will also be moving the range balls to the synthetic tee. This will help ensure that we have grass to hit off of next season. Please do not take range balls from

the synthetic to the grass tee. The divots taken this late in the season will not recover until late in the spring next year. I would also like to wish anyone traveling to warmer climates safe travels and a good winter golf season. We will be working hard to prep the golf course and equipment for a successful 2011 golf season. As always if anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,Jim Hess
