PASTORAL SCENE

I hope this communi-cation finds you well! The end of this school year has been an adventure to say the least! I am proud to say that with the tremendous work our teachers, students, and staff have done, we are ending this year successfully.

During the COVID Pandemic, we were in communi-cation with our students and families daily. Teachers checked in with families weekly to see if they needed as-sistance with anything from online learning to meals. Weekly video announcements were sent out, and every class met on Zoom at least once a week. We communicat-ed daily with parents and students through email, Class Dojo, SeeSaw, and Google Classroom. Throughout the fourth quarter, our faculty met virtually to voice concerns and share ideas as they prepared their lessons for the remainder of the school year. We improved our online learning skills through communication with our families about what worked, as well as the struggles they encountered. This allowed us to adjust our online learning accordingly and better prepare for the upcoming school year. We recognize that this change was very stressful for our students and parents, but we pulled together to make certain that quality learning continued. To conclude the school year, we held a virtual graduation for our 8th grade students and their families. The other grade levels have had virtual award ceremonies with their teachers. We are continuing to discuss objec-tives for our return in the fall and will adjust our plans ac-cordingly to comply with the Governor’s mandates. I will meet virtually with the faculty throughout the summer to prepare for the next school year. During the summer break, teachers will be preparing lessons that can readily adapt to the type of learning situations that may occur. Our enrollment for next year is very strong, as we have over 30 new students that are enrolled, and calls are coming in daily. We even have a waitlist for some grade levels as well. Thank you for your continued prayers and support! We are proud to work in partnership with St. Monica and St. Martin of Tours parishes! May God continue to bless you and keep you safe! God bless, Lisa Oriti St. Benedict School Principal

Religion Question of the Week

What three major feast days occur at the end of the Easter Season? (Answer is found on page 4) Did You Know?

Did you know that St. Monica Church celebrated its 68th anniversary on April 1st of this year? One Liner

“ A candle lights others and consumes itself “.

Did you know that during WWI and continued again in WWII, people in the United States planted “Victory Gardens” so they could become more self sufficient? Gardens that were full of fruits and vegetables popped up everywhere, includ-ing balconies and rooftops! It

was so successful during WWII that it was estimated that 40% of fresh vegetables were produced in these gardens. This is also the same concept as the “community gardens” that have developed in different cities, local communities, and even at St. Martin of Tours Church. Anyone can plant a garden with contain-er gardening or raised garden beds. In addition to a garden being a great food source, there are a lot more health benefits to gardening. Ask your local garden center for help and ideas, or use google or YouTube.

Happy Gardening!

A Word or Two About Sacraments

Pope Benedict XVI once said, “... the faith is not a theory, a philosophy, or idea; it is an encounter. An encounter with Jesus.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that Christ is present to the Church: in his word; in the Church’s prayer; in the poor, the sick and the imprisoned; in the sacrifice of the Mass; in the person of the ordained; and in the sacraments.

The Church, guided by the “power of the Holy Spirit” discerned over time that there are seven sacraments instituted by Jesus Christ. These seven sacraments touch all the stages and important moments of Christian life: they give birth and increase healing and mission to the Christian’s faith. They are baptism, confirmation, Eucha-rist, penance, anointing of the sick, holy orders and matrimony.

Each sacrament is capable of producing and conferring the grace that it promises through its rite of celebration. Through the words we hear and the materials (oil, water, laying on of hands, etc.) used by the Church in its celebration, the special grace of the sacrament being conferred is given through the power of the Holy Spirit present in the person of the priest or deacon. Because the source of every sacrament is Christ himself, we can say with confidence that it is actually Christ who baptizes, confirms, etc. through the action being performed. This makes the sacraments the continuation of Christ’s ministry in history and Christ’s visibility in the world.

As we go forward this year in the preparation of children and adults for various sacraments, I will provide a short, to-the-point explanation of the rite and effects of each sacrament. Sr. Helene
