The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ – May 29, 2016
Mission Statement We, the Christ-centered community of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, commit ourselves to be a
warm and welcoming Catholic community of faith; proclaiming the message of Jesus through a
strong and vital sacramental life, active ministry, and loving outreach.
Dear Friends,
“And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.” Today’s
Gospel shows us that Jesus wants to do more than satisfy our needs. He wants to give us an
experience of fullness and abundance. He not only miraculously fed the crowd of thousands; he
also provided enough to make a mountain of leftovers. More than they needed, more than they
ever expected. That’s what Jesus gave. And it’s what he continues to give us every time we
receive the Eucharist. This too is a miraculous meal. Like the multiplication of five loaves and
two fish, Jesus turns something small—bread and wine—into something abundant and over
owing: his body, blood, soul, and divinity.
Through this sacrament we experience the gift of union with Jesus and the resulting graces that
come from encountering him. Just like the crowds gathered that day in a deserted place, we come
to Jesus with our emptiness—our needs, our weaknesses, our fears—and he fills us up until we
too are “satisfied.” Receiving the Lord in the Eucharist is a momentous miracle and an earthly glimpse into heaven. May
today’s celebration help remind us to be ever grateful for this most glorious gift.
In observance of Memorial Day this Monday, the parish office will be closed, and we will not have 9:00 a.m. Mass. Have
a safe and relaxing holiday!
Many thanks to our volunteers in Faith Formation, beginning with Bible Babies: Pat Mlynarski, Jennifer Taylor, Brooke
Doerfler, Cathryn Nash and Jerlisa Johnson. Children’s Liturgy of the Word: Diane Conley, Catherine Gorzkowski,
Sally Fortman, Tom Lazo, Ben Lorenz, Tim Mikules, Jeffrey Phillips, Chris Seibold and Brendan Walls. Our K-5
Catechists: Christine Judd, Jennifer Ator, Christine Chadwick, Sarah Koziel, Katy Voight-Nobis, Maureen Heyneman,
Jennifer Przydzial, Melissa Silva-Wilson, Dcn. Michael Drevitch, Elizabeth Wright, Christine Allen, Kristen Poland,
Dente Poland, Michael Rafter, Deanna Kouroupis, Christine Pinto, Ashley Harding, Lesley Hill, Michelle Garino, John
Frieland and Julia Castle. Middle School Youth Ministers: Sarah Foote, Kevin McCoy, Julia Nunno-Miller and Jo Ann
McCardell. Also helping to keep our Thursday night Faith Formation running smoothly, our Door and Hall Monitors:
Becky Baltimore, Christi Bruner, Stacey Lucas, Jerlisa Johnson, Joanne Kennedy, Kim Mahar, Katherine Nicol, Jennifer
Prevo and Gloria Ryan; the Substitutes: Robert Murphy, Leanne McCullough and Lawrence Priebe. Finally, a special
thank you to our High School Student Volunteers: Ariel McCoy, Ethan Hill, Meghan Ronan, Peyton Kenney, Katie
Sheehan and Marissa Sison. This Saturday, at the 4:30 Mass, our last group of First Communicants for 2016 is welcomed
to the table of the Lord! Thank you to the Sacramental Preparation Catechists: Diane Conley, David Gayvert and John
Wcislo, as well as the second grade Catechists and Catholic School teachers who participated in the spiritual growth of
these children.
Some of these talented catechists have been working with Seton’s children for years, and will be moving on to other
endeavors. If you have an interest in helping with Faith Formation in any way, consider attending the Happy Hour, here in
the Fr. Edward Connelly Parish Center on Friday, June 3, 2016, 6:30-8:30 p.m. RSVP to [email protected].
Many thanks to our Altar Servers, under the direction of Jack McCabe, for their excellent ministry to our parish,
especially extra servers needed for the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Not only does music enhance our liturgy, but the additional
servers at the 11:00 a.m. assist with the gospel procession and incensing the Sacrament during the Eucharistic Prayer.
When they do this they heighten our attention and our senses to Word and Sacrament, where Jesus is truly present among
us. After the 11:00 a.m. Mass this weekend the extra servers will take a much needed break until they start back again in
September. Please show your appreciation to our servers after Mass throughout the year. Thanks also to their parents for
bringing them to their training sessions and assigned Masses. I am proud of their hard work! If you or your child would
like to serve at the Lord's altar or volunteer in another capacity, please call the Parish Office or email me at
Peace,
Fr. Paul

Youth & Young Adult Ministry
Wednesday Night Drop-In’s: The Youth Room opens for High
School Students on Wednesdays from 7:30-9:00 p.m. There’s
no set agenda…some students bring homework and even get
help from older students, some just come to de-stress and hang
out with friends for an evening, sometimes a topic of faith
comes up and we end up having a deep discussion while other
times the conversation is light. If you’re looking for community
and to build friendships with other Catholic teens, come join us!
Liturgy Notes
Happy Memorial Day! Next weekend we start Ordinary Time in
earnest, with no Solemnities like the Divine Mercy, Pentecost, Trinity
and Corpus Christi superseding the numbered weeks of our
liturgical lives. We had the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 10,
and we jump to the 10th Sunday next weekend. We're going to sing the
Mass of Creation Gloria (#193), the Mass of Light Gospel Acclamation
(#340), and the Community Mass for our Liturgy of the
Eucharist (##370 - 372, and 389). Beginning this year we're going to
use Penitential Act B, which is the second option of #168. We've sung
Rite A and C before during Advent and Lent, but never Rite B. We'll be practicing it this weekend. Please try to memorize it.
There's a wonderful coincidence of church and state this
weekend. Corpus Christi - "Do this in memory of me", and Memorial
Day "Lest we forget". I shall be in Boston for one of Marcia's niece's
weddings, but on Sunday we'll be at the National Cemetery in Bourne,
dressing the graves of all our loved ones who paid the ultimate price. I
enjoyed listening to my old friend (Cardinal) Vincent Nichols on the
BBC talk about the pilgrimage back to Canterbury of the 800 year-
old remains of St Thomas a Becket from their shrine in Hungary. The
Archbishop of Westminster described Thomas as a model of those
Christians who stood up to the prevailing power of the time,
(our history books in England described him as a traitor who put the
interests of the Pope before his country) reminding us that the Gospel is
counter-cultural. But this weekend we can think about our dearly
departed, who followed Christ in giving their all, for as John 15:13 tells
us "there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for a
friend." The 5.30 Mass music group would love to hear what you think
of their ministry. Enter the link below into your search engine as it's
written. http://bit.ly/5-30SETONReview16 don’t worry, it's not too
hard. Good luck - the 5.30 group!
SUNDAY, MAY 29, 2016 SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD
OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI)
The power of a single voice - The feast of Corpus Christi is
popular and moving because it is simple and direct—it’s all about the
Eucharist, one of the greatest treasures of Catholicism. Yet the feast
would not exist were it not for the efforts of Juliana of Liège, a
Norbertine canoness born in 1191 in Liège, Belgium, a city where there
were groups of women dedicated to Eucharistic worship. She had a
vision of a full moon with one dark spot signifying the lack of a feast
day solely dedicated to the Eucharist. She shared her vision and
eventually vision became reality. What gift can you envision giving to
your community?
TODAY’S READINGS: Genesis 14:18-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Luke
9:11b-17 (169). “Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God.”
MONDAY, MAY 30
Heal the wounds of war - On this Memorial Day, as you remember
those who gave their lives serving their country; also keep in your heart
those who have lost loved ones, those struggling with physical and
emotional wounds, and all other victims of war. Pray and work for the
reconciliation of divided peoples and for peace in your community and
around the world. The U.S. bishops urge all to pray on this day:
“Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may
all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.”
TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Peter 1:2-7; Mark 12:1-12 (353). “May grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our
Lord.”
TUESDAY, MAY 31
FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Look who’s here! A friend comes to visit. Just the thought can
redeem the darkest day! Whether we’re confined by illness, grieving a
loss, in need of practical assistance, or just pleasantly surprised by a
familiar face at the door, the time of visitation is a bright hour of
consolation. The encounter between Mary and Elizabeth was more than
the welcome arrival of help for an aged mother’s third trimester. God’s
saving power intersected these two lives and gave them to each other,
to share the joy. Bring good news to someone today. TODAY’S READINGS: Zephaniah 3:14-18a or Romans 12:9-16; Luke 1:39-56 (572). “Mary set out . . . in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered
the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.”
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1 FEAST OF JUSTIN, MARTYR
What’s the good Word? Christian theology owes a debt to the pre-
Christian philosophies of Plato and Aristotle. Early church theologian
Justin was able to see connections between the great philosophers of
Greek antiquity and the wisdom revealed by Jesus. The prologue of
John’s Gospel speaks of Jesus as “Logos,” the preexisting Word. Justin
believed that the “seeds of Christianity” found in thinkers such as Plato
or Aristotle were evidence of the Logos acting in history before
Christ’s incarnation. Whether or not Plato and Aristotle were
“unknowing Christians,” we are knowing Christians. Spend some time
with the Word today. TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Timothy 1:1-3, 6-12; Mark 12:18-27 (355). “Are
you not misled because you do not know the scriptures or the power of
God?”
THURSDAY, JUNE 2 FEAST OF MARCELLINUS AND PETER, MARTYRS
Exercise with caution - We don’t know a lot about Marcellinus and
Peter, martyred in 304, but we know Peter was an exorcist, an often
misunderstood or over-dramatized office of church ministry. The rite
itself was revised in 1999 for the first time since 1614, and modern
practice counsels priests empowered to perform an exorcism to first
make sure they are dealing with genuine possession rather than mental
illness. The Code of Canon Law states that the bishop is to give
permission to perform the rite to a priest “who has piety, knowledge,
prudence, and integrity of life.” We rely on Jesus to protect us from the
power of evil, and the church stands by our side should we need
assistance in doing so. TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Timothy 2:8-15; Mark 12:28-34 (356). “You are
not far from the kingdom of God.”
FRIDAY, JUNE 3 SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Have a heart that never stops - To do something “without heart”
means to live without passion or purpose. “In the Heart of Christ,”
Saint John Paul II wrote, a person’s heart “learns to know the genuine
and unique meaning” of life and destiny: “to unite the filial love for
God and the love of neighbor.” The Sacred Heart reminds us that Jesus
had a heart just like ours; that his acts of love aren’t beyond us, but are
already in us, in every loving gesture, relationship, and experience.
This is the heart of what gives us life—a heart whose love never stops
beating in us. TODAY’S READINGS: Ezekiel 34:11-16; Romans 5:5b-11; Luke 15:3-7
(172). “The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”
SATURDAY, JUNE 4
MEMORIAL OF THE IMMACULATE HEART
OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
See with a mother’s heart - “In a unique way the face of the Son
belongs to Mary,” Saint John Paul II wrote in Rosarium Virginis
Mariae (“The Rosary of the Virgin Mary”). Jesus was the child she
gazed upon in the manger, the one she pondered in her heart throughout
her life. Her heart was filled with a love for him that embraced the pain
of the Passion and the joy of the Resurrection. Such love, held in her
Immaculate Heart, is an example to us all of a love that gives life, that’s
meant to be cherished, adored, and that ultimately longs to lead us back
to her Son over and over again. TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Timothy 4:1-8 (358); Luke 2:41-51 (573). “And his
mother kept all these things in her heart.”
