THE MONTREAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS VIRTUAL AUCTION2nd edition: November 4 to 11, 2021

Presented by:

The state of a society is intimately related to the importance it attributes to the vibrancy of its culture, and art is certainly an essential component of its development. The singular circumstances of the last year have affected us all, to the point that a good number of us have noted the importance of art in our lives and its beneficial impacts. While that is a crucial realization, the reality is that the financial repercussions of the pandemic will be felt by many artists, other participants in the art scene, entrepreneurs, merchants and businesses for numerous years to come.

As a consequence, the decision to hold the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Virtual Auction for a second consecutive year was an appropriate one. The aim of this initiative of our Foundation is not only to raise funds for our institution’s operations, but also to help actively encourage the recovery of the local economy and tourism, as well as shine a spotlight on the exceptional talent of the artists in our community. The Virtual Auction will be open to our donors, Members and the general public from November 4 to 11, 2021. Browsing through this catalogue, I am sure you will find one or more lots that will satisfy your craving for new experiences and be worthy of your generosity. Thank you for being a part of the MMFA family.

Stéphane Aquin Director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

A MESSAGE FROM NADINE RENAUD-TINKER

RBC Royal Bank has been a proud partner of the MMFA for many years. It is therefore again a pleasure for me to invite you to take part in the second edition of the MMFA’s Virtual Auction and, at the same time, reaffirm your commitment to this key Quebec cultural institution with an international reputation. Providing support for art and fostering Montreal’s economic recovery are two of the Auction's major aims, both of which are fully in line with RBC values. Your participation will also enable our great Museum to remain at the forefront of socio-cultural life and play an indispensable role in its community’s well-being. Let us all join in supporting this virtual event that, with its range of one-of-a-kind lots, you will be sure to enjoy. Thank you in advance for your participation and engagement!

Nadine Renaud-Tinker President, Quebec Headquarters, RBC Royal Bank

THE MMFA’S VIRTUAL AUCTION2nd edition: November 4 to 11, 2021

The MMFA's virtual benefit auction aims to contribute to the financial support of the Museum's activities. The lots have been selected so as to have a positive impact on the community and at the same time support the exceptional work of local contemporary artists. To this end, participating artists and gallerists will be compensated for the works sold at market prices. Only the amounts in excess will be disbursed to the Museum Foundation.

Presented by RBC, this auction offers a variety of lots we invite you to bid on. The lots are divided into three (3) separate categories:

• ARTWORKS

• UNIQUE EXPERIENCES

• EMBLEMATIC ACTIVITIES AT THE MUSEUM

The web platform for the MMFA Auction will go online November 4, 2021. The only thing those taking part will need to do is create an account in order to make their live bids. An email from the MMFA Foundation will be sent to you shortly so that you can register.

ARTWORKS – DETAILS

Jennifer AlleynJennifer Alleyn's "Attente" Series, 2021A selection of five (5) digital photographs offered exclusively at the 2021 MMFA auctionOpening bid: $2,200 each

_Information Jennifer Alleyn's photographic series "Attente" was made in the galleries of the MMFA during the reinstallation of the collections in the new Pavilion for Peace in 2016. Through the transitory aspect of hanging and waiting, these behind-the-scenes photos convey a state of suspension that resonates with what we have experienced in recent months and, through each image, ask what the future of culture will be.

Attracted early on by the capacity of film to reveal what can’t be seen, Jennifer Alleyn has continued to explore the hidden meaning of things through installation and photography. A multidisciplinary artist, she draws on her university education in both film and the studio arts to create works that dialogue with the medium. Trained in documentary, her work is based on the collection of fragments of reality; in the same way, her artworks are developed through the patching together of filmed sequences as well as still images and words.

Jennifer Alleyn's interdisciplinary practice takes the form of film, video, installation and photography. Born in Switzerland and based in Montreal, she is interested in the creative process and has made it the subject of many of her projects. Her films have been selected for and garnered awards at major festivals, including Cannes, New York, Moscow and FIFA. Her visual artworks, exhibited in Canada and Switzerland, can be found in the collections of the Musée d'art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, Cinémathèque québécoise and private collections in Canada and Europe.

Shuvinai AshoonaUntitled, 2020Ink on paper, 76 x 58.5 cm, unframedOpening bid: $2,550

_Information Many of Shuvinai Ashoona’s early drawings depict scenes of Kinngait (formerly known as Cape Dorset), Nunavut, continuing an artistic tradition begun by the Ashoona family, including her grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona (1904–1983) and cousin Annie Pootoogook (1969–2016). Living in Kinngait on the southern tip of Baffin Island, Shuvinai is a part of Canada’s Inuit culture.

Shuvinai’s work is unique among the artists working in Kinngait. Her drawings imagine the past and present fused into a prophetic future filled with human-animal hybrid creatures, women giving birth to worlds, and mystical or otherworldly landscapes clearly inspired by her northern home. Anything but dystopian, Shuvinai’s drawings teem with life. While her community is occasionally depicted clashing with the creatures she imagines, they mostly peacefully co-exist. Unlike many visions of the future that seem to dwell on confrontations

between human beings and nature, or human beings and “invaders” from other realms, the worlds of Shuvinai exist within a peaceful intergalactic time to come.

_Information Through her approach to art, Nathalie Bujold constantly makes us think about the bridges between practices, as well as about the possible back and forth between digital and traditional arts. Her ink drawing Toile plays with our perception. Like all her work, it pays tribute—by a roundabout route—to the world of textiles. We are faced with a canvas that is not a canvas, but which gives the illusion of one, just like all the artist's video montages that call to mind patterns inspired by textiles.

The holder of a bachelor's degree in visual arts from Université Laval as well as a master's degree in visual and media arts from UQÀM, Bujold brings together various areas and techniques in her practice, all the while entwining music, textiles and video.

Nathalie Bujold is the winner of the 2008 Prix à la création artistique for the best artistic

achievement in experimental film and video, awarded by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Maude CorriveauDrapés bimorphiques, 2021Soft pastel on Rising Stonehenge paper, 102 x 77 cm, framedOpening bid: $3,700

_Information Fascinated by the action of light on matter, Maude Corriveau transfigures humble synthetic materials through the practice of drawing. Her vision of still life participates in the digital world in order to heighten certain optical phenomena such as shadows and specular reflections. In her simultaneously complex and minimalist compositions, she transforms pictorial space into an ethereal world that plays with the boundaries between illusion and reality, immateriality and matter. Reflecting upon manual skill in the context of contemporary art, Corriveau updates hyperrealism not only by imitating a simulated and magnified reality, but also by facilitating a perceptual experience of her works. In that respect, hyperdrawing manifests itself as a

conceptual process and emerges in an exploration of space through sculpture and installation.

Maude Corriveau holds a bachelor's degree as well as a master's in visual and media arts from UQÀM and is also a recipient of the 2019 Yvonne L. Bombardier Graduate Scholarship in Visual Arts.

Marie-Michelle DeschampsParasol (esquisse), 2020Graphite on paper, 30.5 x 23 cm, framedOpening bid: $1,725

_InformationPresented in a solo exhibition by Marie-Michelle Deschamps at Bradley Ertaskiran in 2021, Parasol (esquisse) is inspired by the Voynich Manuscript, a 15th-century handwritten and hand-illustrated book whose inscriptions remain undeciphered to this day. Now known as possibly being one of the first pharmacopoeias, the Voynich Manuscript combines a cryptic language with illustrations of plants. Like that illuminated manuscript, Parasol (esquisse) features an enigmatic biological language.

Marie-Michelle Deschamps holds an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art. In 2019, she was nominated for the Sobey Art Award.

David ElliottNew Year w Rainbow & Strawberry, 2020Collage with printed paper, cardboard, foam board, wood and acrylic, 24 x 28 cm, unframedOpening bid: $1,625

_InformationHaving strong affinities with 19th-century Symbolism and 20th-century Metaphysical painting, and considered one of the key Canadian painters associated with the return to figurative art in the late 1970s and early 1980s, self-proclaimed postmodern collagist David Elliott rigorously selects and energetically arranges images to create works that inevitably recall the romanticism of a bygone era.

For Elliott, careful attention to the choice of imagery is just as important as the way in which it is arranged. Inspired by the assemblages of the American artist Joseph Cornell as well as the counterculture aesthetic of the 1960s and 1970s, David Elliott sees the world in fragments, which he endeavours to piece together into a whole on the canvas—a space he once referred to as his “metaphysical spatial container.”

Eddy Firmin 2, 2019Ceramic, 36.2 x 17.9 x 17.9 cm, edition of 2Opening bid: $5,520

_InformationEddy Firmin is interested in the politics of knowledge sharing as well as the epistemic conflicts they generate in the colonized artist. He thus sets out to rectify the codes of an ancestral practice, Gwoka, a mix of dance, song, storytelling and music. The latter belongs to a bossal episteme, that is, a very large family of Afro-Caribbean practices, including Paracumbé, Guineo, Bélè, Calenda, Bomba and Tambú, built to resist colonial violence. This compelling need to transfer ancestral codes to modern visual media is due to the fact that the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique have not produced a visual tradition to which he can refer, due to the prohibitions of slavery within a constricted area.

A native of Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean, Eddy Firmin is an artist and academic. The holder of a PhD in Arts Studies and Practices from UQÀM and a master's degree from the École

LOT 11 supérieure d’art et design of Le Havre-Rouen in France, he is the managing editor of the decolonial journal Minorit'Art.

Karilee FuglemUntitled, 2013Digital print, 62.9 x 47 cm, framed Opening bid: $1,375

_InformationMost of Karilee Fuglem’s work is made on site, to respond to existing conditions, and photography helps her see better and look longer. She wants to slow things down in her art, the process of making it as much as how it is received. To this end she has favoured natural light with its continual, unremarked reminder that we live on a planet so long it takes a day to rotate back to morning and on a trajectory so big around the sun it takes a year to circle all the way around it.

Karilee Fuglem’s work takes the form of installations, drawings, photographs and artist books, through which she explores visual subtlety as a key to embodied perception.

Jessica HoustonMany Kinds of Absence (Antarctica), 2018Digital print, 56 x 84 cm, edition of 10, unframedOpening bid: $2,875

_InformationThe “Horizon Felt” series of photographs uses colour to create new cartographies of the polar regions. Using the horizon, the colours of the land and animals as reference points, Jessica Houston placed different pieces of coloured felt in front of her lens while photographing the North and South poles. Those photographs take stock of the history of the poles and their entanglement with colonialism, capitalism, and environmental injustice, while opening up a space to rethink the "natural."

Jessica Houston travels from pole to pole—using objects, oral histories, photography and painting—to evoke the connections between colonialism, globalization and our current environmental crisis.

Caroline MonnetEssai 04, 2021Silkscreen on waterproofing membrane, 31.7 x 27.9 cm, framedOpening bid: $2,300

_InformationCaroline Monnet’s recent body of work grapples with colonialism’s impact, updating outdated systems with Indigenous methodologies. Using contemporary building materials and incorporating patterns transmitted across generations, Monnet creates hybrid objects respectful of tradition and alert to change. Resembling city maps and bar codes as much as they do traditional weaving and beading, the patterns she prints on, weaves into, or cuts from insulation of various types blends the traditional and the new, offering a glimpse back and a path forward.

A multidisciplinary artist from Quebec’s Outaouais region, Caroline Monnet presented an exhibition of her work at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2021. Her work is included in prestigious collections, including those of the National Gallery

Jean-Benoit PouliotUntitled (#0118), 2018Acrylic on canvas, 20.5 x 15 cmOpening bid: $825

_InformationThe work on auction was created as part of the series “L’image souple.” That project explores the image/object relationship through an active consideration of the contemporary conditions associated with the appearance, transformation and dissemination of images.

Self-taught, Jean-Benoit Pouliot began his artistic career in the early 2000s through printmaking. From 2004 to 2008, he worked as part of the performance duo L'œil de verre, using light as a raw material, and collaborated with various actors on the contemporary music scene. It will be on view this fall in the exhibition Outside the Frame at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Michaëlle SergileDe Capécia à Fanon, 2020Cotton fabric, acrylic thread, wooden support, 121.9 x 76.2 cmOpening bid: $2,650

_InformationDe Capécia à Fanon is a work that explores the various discourses surrounding the author Mayotte Capécia. Beginning with a critique of the famous psychiatrist and philosopher Frantz Fanon, Michaëlle Sergile looks at the literary erasure Capécia suffered following the publication of the book Black Skin, White Masks.

Michaëlle Sergile is an independent artist and curator whose work mainly uses archival documents, including texts and books from the post-colonial period from 1950 to the present. Her art aims to understand and rewrite, through weaving, the history of Black communities, specifically that of women and those communities living at the intersection of cultures. A medium often perceived as craft and categorized as feminine, the artist utilizes the lexicon of weaving to question the power relationships between the sexes and races.

Martha TownsendDouble Slate 2 (Ardoise double 2), 2020Slate and painted wood, 48.4 (dia.) x 3.5 cmOpening bid: $2,300

_InformationIn keeping with its title, this work is composed of two half-moons cut from the same piece of slate and joined to form a disc bisected by a painted wood horizon line. The work’s material density is somewhat contradicted by the apparent fluidity of the stone surface. Its dark and heavy presence suggests the opposite of the moon’s bright orb shining in the night sky.

Sculptor Martha Townsend was born in Ottawa and lives in Montreal. Her work is known for its simple geometric forms composed of evocative materials. She has developed a distinctive and poetic visual language that appeals equally to the intellect and the senses.
