.Chateau Ausone 1999St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe (A)Is the 1999 Ausone the wine of the vintage? Dense purple color, a compelling bouquet of licorice, minerals, black and blueberry liqueur, extraordinary delineation, high tannin, superb extract, and phenomenal richness all are the stuff of a legend. This wine seems impossible to have emerged from a vintage like 1999. Proprietor Alain Vauthier produced only 20,000 bottles because he eliminated one-fourth of the tiny crop. The result is out-and-out fabulous, but the wine needs 12-15 years of cellaring. R. Parker, 95 pts. 04/023 bottles$900-1,300
.Chateau Cheval Blanc 1989St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe (A)1 bottle$300-400
.Chateau La Conseillante 2008PomerolR. Parker, 95 pts. 05/11 12 bottles (owc)$1,200-1,800
.Chateau Duhart Milon 2008Pauillac, 4eme Cru ClasseA magnificent sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Duhart Milon is the shrewd consumers wine to purchase by the case as prices do not yet reflect its qualitative resurgence. Composed of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot that came in at 13.09% alcohol, it is a surprisingly intense effort displaying a marvelous texture, plenty of black currant, licorice, unsmoked cigar tobacco and earthy characteristics, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning purity as well as density. R. Parker, 94 pts. 05/1112 bottles (owc)$900-1,300
.Chateau Haut Brion 1962Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classeu: 4cm, light label fading1 bottle$300-400

.Chateau Margaux 2008Margaux, 1er Cru ClasseR. Parker, 94 pts. 05/116 bottles (owc)$2,700-4,000
.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1990Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe2 bottles$600-900
.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1994Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe2 bottles$600-900
.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2002Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe1 magnum$600-800
.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2006Pauillac, 1er Cru ClasseA sensational effort, the 2006 Mouton Rothschild exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a classic Mouton perfume of creme de cassis, flowers, blueberries, and only a hint of oak. Dalhuin told me that in whisky barrel-tasting vintages such as 1989 and 1990, Mouton was aged in heavily-toasted barrels, and they have backed off to a much lighter toast for the barrels interior. I think this has worked fabulously well with the cassis quality fruit they get from their Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied, powerful 2006 possesses extraordinary purity and clarity. A large-scaled, massive Mouton Rothschild that ranks as one of the top four or five wines of the vintage, it may turn out to be the longest-lived wine of the vintage by a landslide. The label will undoubtedly be controversial as a relative of Sigmund Freud, Lucian Freud, has painted a rather comical Zebra staring aimlessly at what appears to be a palm tree in the middle of a stark courtyard. I suppose a psychiatrist could figure out the relationship between that artwork and wine, but I couldnt see one. This utterly profound Mouton will need to sleep for 15+ years before it will reveal any secondary nuances, but it is a packed and stacked first-growth Pauillac of enormous potential. R. Parker, 98+ pts. 02/093 bottles$1,500-2,250
.Doisy Daene LExtravagant 2001There is only a tiny amount of the light gold/green-colored 2001 Doisy-Daene lExtravagant (primarily Sauvignon Blanc). As the name suggests, it is extravagantly rich as well as very full-bodied with extraordinary purity and intensity. The finish lasts for over a minute. There are loads of botrytis in addition to caramelized tropical fruits, zesty acidity, and striking clarity of expression. R. Parker, 98 pts. 06/043 demi bottles (each in individual owc)$400-600
