The Monthly Newsletter of the Department of Human Resource Development

Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat

September 2016 Vol. 6, No. 9

On War and Peace by Madhusudan Raj (Assistant

Professor, DHRD, VNSGU)

As the Canadian journalist Eric Margolis

said in his important book War at the Top of the World: The Struggle for Afghanistan, Kashmir and Tibet (Margolis & Margolis,

2002) the border between India and Pakistan

at the Kashmir front is the most dangerous

border in the world. This fact became again

clear recently at the flare-up of Kashmir vio-

lence since last one month or so. After scores

of Kashmiris dying in protests, the militants

from PoK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir) en-

tered the Uri sector of Kashmir and attacked

and killed 19 Indian government soldiers in

an army camp.

After this Uri attack the general mood

amongst many Indian people is that of an-

ger. They are demanding retaliation. The Ra-

jyasabha MP Mr. Subramanian Swamy went

as far as to say that, ―In the event of a nu-clear war, Pakistani nuclear bombs can kill not more than 10 crore people. We are the country of 112 crore population. But our nu-clear bombs can wipe off Pakistan alto-gether...―I think the chance of a nuclear war is very low. But should it happen, 10 crore people should be prepared to be killed. Our soldiers die while protecting the border. In-dian is the only country where officers to the rank of captains and brigadiers put them-selves at the frontline. If they can die for the country, why can‘t us.‖(Staff, 2016)!

All this sabre rattling aside, the serious

question that all the Indians today should be

pondering is whether war is the only solution

of any issue? The answer should be a clear

cut, No. War is not a solution of any conflict

issue. War is nothing but total horror. If you

don't believe me then take a look at some

pictures of Iraq war at this link (warning:

the pictures are gruesome so please use your

discretion before clicking that link):

http://mindprod.com/politics/iraqwarpix.html

It is destruction of life and property on vast

scale e.g., take a look at some before war and

after war photos of some Syrian cities below:

September 2016, Vol. 6, No.9

2

Do you want to see the city where you live in

India, whether that be Delhi or Mumbai or

Ahmadabad or Calcutta or Surat or Bhopal

or Bhubneshwar, to reduce to rubble like

that under bombardment? Are you ready to

sacrifice 10 crore Indian lives (that will in-

clude you, your dear and loved ones etc.) just

for the sake of one Kashmir conflict?

The reason why many Indians are talking

about war today is because they haven't seen

a single war in their whole life time and so

they don't understand the horrors of war.

Most Indians have lived their lives in rela-

tive peace during last 70 years or so. Most

wars with Pakistan and China were fought

on the border regions only. People inside the

Indian cities haven't seen a series of bombs

dropping from the sky on their houses. I

think this is the reasons many of them are

sucked into the war rhetoric and are now

calling for an all-out war with Pakistan. The

heightened nationalist fervour is now put-

ting whole of India in danger of normal exis-

tence.

September 2016, Vol. 6, No.9

Under pressure of this angered public opin-

ion couple of days ago the Indian government

ordered the Indian paramilitary commandos

to attack the militant camps. They carried

out these surgical strikes along the LoC. Di-

rector General Military Operations, Lt Gen

Ranbir Singh, announced this news of strikes

in this way:

―Based on very credible and specific informa-tion which we received yesterday that some terrorist teams had positioned themselves at launch pads along the Line of Control with an aim to carry out infiltration and terrorist strikes in Jammu & Kashmir and in various other metros in our country, the Indian army conducted surgical strikes last night at these launch pads. (―India‘s surgical strikes across LoC,‖ 2016). After these strikes the war situation between

the Indian and Pakistani nation states is se-

riously escalating. As I have said above war

is not good for anyone. War is total destruc-

tion of life and property. In this time of

heightened tensions it is important to cling

tightly to the path of Peace. In Mahabharata

Lord Krishna also said that there can be no

alternative of Peace. Whatever the Indian

and Pakistani people have achieved during

last 70 years will be lost in a matter of few

days or months if war takes place between

these two nuclear powers. I know when the

drums of war are beating hard it is easy for

people to get emotional and lose their sanity.

In such times lies become truth and, unfor-

tunately, truth becomes lies. But, as I said

above, this is precisely the time not to lose

our sanity. We must never get away from the

path of Peace. No conflict is as big as to de-

mand a total destruction of human lives. Life

must get priority over death. And no conflict

is also big enough that it cannot be solved

via peaceful dialogues. If we will lose our fo-

cus from Peace then our future will definitely

be bleak.

has to compulsorily go to school. So, the

question of "illiteracy" or the concept of "lit-

where emphasis is given on theory, where as

in some course the emphasis is on the practi-

Students‘ Engagement at National HRD

Network Meet at Dahej

The Department of Human Resource Devel-

opment (DHRD) team attended the National

HRD Network meet at the Hotel Fortune

Park, Dahej on September 21, 2016. The

meet is held every month and the Depart-

ment participates in these meets in various

ways in many of these meets. This meets

provide a very good platform of industry-

academia interface.

This time, around 12 students MHRD, MLW,

MA (HRM & LR) and Five-Years Integrated

HRD, participated in this meet. Dr Kiran

Pandya led the team and three faculty mem-

bers of the Department: Dr Smruti Bulsari,

Dr Minasree Saikia and Mr Mayur Bardolia

joined. Other faculty members of the De-

partment have also participated and con-

tributed at different occasions.

September 2016, Vol. 6, No.9

7

The meet began with welcome from Mr Hi-

manshu Bhatt. Mr Sunil Bhatt presented the

outline of the meet. He introduced six differ-

ent HR professionals from six different in-

dustries. The sharing began with Mr Man-

than Joshi from Lubrizol. He presented his

bucket of learning as inculcating Learning

and Development practices, enhancing em-

ployee engagement through employee en-

gagement surveys, CEO online programme,

creating bond with the CSR beneficiaries and

open communication platform.

This was followed by sharing of learning by

Mr Gaurang Sheth from Piramal. He em-

phasized the importance of detailing in In-

dustrial Relations and all related matters.

He mentioned that if HR proactively works

for grievance handling, that helps in building

and improving employee relations. He dis-

cussed about employee engagement through

involving them in story-telling, fun in learn-

ing and such activities. He also talked about

involving family members of workmen in

other activities thereby, inculcating in them,

a family bond with the company.

Ms Namrata Pandya from Sanofi explained

that one should focus on ―What is right?‖

rather than ―Who is right?‖ She also ex-

plained that each employee, irrespective of

their position, should be treated with dig-

nity. She expressed that in Training and De-

velopment, adult learning methods should be

adopted to get desired results. Mr Ram from

Tega talked about innovative concepts like

―Tea with MD‖ and ―Instant Shabaash‖ for

smoothening communication and enhancing

motivation respectively. He mentioned about

performance-based increments to all, rather

than yearly increments to few.

Mr Ashish talked about not trusting the

memory and penning down everything so

that it can be referred in future, if required.

He also shared that periodic updates of em-

ployees‘ details are necessary when it comes

to handling unfortunate happenings. He lu-

cidly narrated cases to explain his points. Mr

Sumit from LNG talked about Corporate So-

cial Responsibility. He said that it is more

important to feel the problems of prospective

beneficiaries rather than doing a survey of

need assessment. Such CSR activities reach

the people more effectively than getting it

done by asking them what they want. He

narrated the case of handling healthcare

emergencies in many villages of Narmada

district where even today, there are no mo-

bile networks and the terrain is hilly.

The key learnings of HR professionals were

succinctly summarized by Mr Sunil Bhatt.

Dr Kiran Pandya, our Head of the Depart-

ment was then invited to speak on the occa-

sion. He first appreciated the initiative of

NHRD Network, zeal and enthusiasm of Mr

Himanshu Bhatt and involvement of Mr

Sunil Bhatt in this activity. He aptly named

the session as Insider‘s view, as the HR pro-

fessionals shared their learning through

their own experiences.

The session was concluded by a vote of

thanks by Mr Himanshu Bhatt. The students

had a great learning time from the sessions

and also from interacting with senior HR

professionals. They felt that humility is the

value that they learnt from senior HR pro-

fessionals.

NHRD Network plays a great role in moti-

vating students and providing platform for

learning and getting exposure to professional
