RESPECT is our May Core Value of the Month! What a great time to celebrate the idea of esteeming, honoring, and protecting one another. With the annual Women’s Tea we respect and honor our mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, and women friends. At our National Senior Fraud Awareness Day event, we will command respect by educating ourselves against scams. And our brand new Senior Fitness Expo brings us new opportunity to respect our bodies as we age gracefully. Look for these events and more, plus a new colorful pull-out weekly class schedule, in the center fold of this issue of The Flight!

If you have both Medicare and Medi-Cal, and would like to make the most of your health care coverage, a new online tool called My Care, My Choice can help. Fred Munoz, a representative of My Care, My Choice, answered our questions about the program.

When did My Care, My Choice start and who is behind the resource?

My Care, My Choice launched last October for open enrollment, and was created by The SCAN Foundation and partners. The SCAN Foundation is an independent public charity dedicated to creating a society where older adults can access health and supportive services of their choosing to meet their needs.

What is the goal of My Care, My Choice?

The SCAN Foundation created MyCareMyChoice.org to help dual eligible beneficiaries (people who have both Medicare and Medi-Cal) to better understand and navigate the health care choices available to them in California so they can get the most from their health care coverage. By answering questions about one’s health care needs and preferences, the MyCareMyChoice.org tool suggests local coverage options that might fit a person’s needs.

Who should use this resource?

MyCareMyChoice.org is for individuals who have both Medicare and Medi-Cal, and it is also useful for organizations, advocates, family members, caregivers and service providers who help people with Medicare and Medi-Cal make health care decisions.

What languages are available on the site?

MyCareMyChoice.org is currently available in English and Spanish and will soon be available in other languages, such as Chinese.

For more information, join us in the APSAC Computer Lab on May 22, at 10:30 a.m. Fred will be available to answer questions and show you personally how to access and use My Care, My Choice to learn how to make the most of your Medicare and Medi-Cal.

CALFRESH AND SSI

¡Los beneficiarios de SSI pueden solicitar CalFresh!

Are you a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiary? Effective June 1, 2019, all SSI beneficiaries are eligible to apply for CalFresh. You can apply online or through your local Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) office.

CalFresh is a nutrition program that can help households buy healthy foods. In California, CalFresh used to be known as the Food Stamp Program. It is funded by the federal government. CalFresh benefits are issued on an EBT card that can be used at most grocery stores and many farmers markets to purchase food.

Until now, California remained to be the only state in the country that barred SSI recipients from CalFresh eligibility. This has increased hunger and poverty across the state, leading many SSI recipients to rely on local food banks, pantries and hot meal sites for their daily nutrition.

To learn more about CalFresh, attend a presentation on May 23, 9:30 to 11:00 AM, in APSAC Room 313. A representative from the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank will provide information on the requirements and how to apply.

April Sponsor & Volunteer HighlightsWe owe a debt of gratitude to the many individuals and organizations who keep our programs runnng. In April, we couldn’t have done it without Forest Lawn, Health Care Partners, BrightView Landscaping, Commercial Connectivity Services, AltaMed, and Councilmember Jose Huizar. A few of our star volunteers were Ricardo Padilla, Peggy Sher, Chi Wong, Paul Sheng, Bok Lim Kim, and Al D’sa. We offer our sincere thanks to everyone for your support!

您可以上網申請或在 DPSS(福利局)申請。

NEW WEBSITE SIMPLIFIES MEDI-MEDI BENEFITS

“The City of Los Angeles Department of Aging is hosting the 15th Annual Senior Art Exhibit. For the last 15 years, the department has held this exhibit in May in honor of Older Americans Month (OAM), to celebrate the contributions of older adults in our community. The theme for the exhibit this year is “Aging Out Loud” which is intended to give aging a new voice reflecting what today’s older adults have to say about aging. To see what a great job the seniors did, please visit the Los Angeles City Hall bridge gallery. The exhibit is available for viewing Monday- Friday from 8:30 AM- 4:30 PM, the last day to go is June 5th, 2017.” -DOA Website
