A lot has changed since '56. There are names that appear repeatedly in our congregation's history -- Greiger, Materna, Dahl, Winter, Kelke -- names of people I've never met. There are other names from the 50s and 60s that have been personally important to me -- Wenndt, Kelly, Dittus -- but which are still unknown to our newest members and college students. And, Lord willing, there are names I'll never know -- perhaps Smith, Hernandez, Gadhavi, Scholtz, Zhang -- of precious sinners for whom Jesus died who will join this congregation after I am long gone. A 60th Anniversary of a church is an opportunity to remember that it's not all about us. We're celebrating the work of God through people who established this congregation with a mindset that says it's not all about us. It's about the Triune God and His people. The next generations. The neighbors who are dying without God's grace and truth. Our children and grandchildren. People we want to meet in heaven. People, like us, who can only gather in heaven by hearing and believing the grace and truth of Jesus Christ. That's what hasn't changed since '56. Today's celebration is partially a look backward with thanksgiving. It is more fully a look forward to the coming months and years in which we get to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. And God will grow the Church. Happy Anniversary, Immanuel. Under the unchanging grace and truth of God, "Trunk-r-Treat" was a wonderful success last Monday. Over 150 children visited our church, receiving welcomes, candy, invitations, and Arch Books. Thanks to everyone who donated candy, decorated cars and trucks, and welcomed the families. Let's do it again next year! We thank our 60th Anniversary Committee: Sally (chairwoman) & Mike Powell, Terry & Linda Standard, Lynn & Mary Wolfmeyer, Diny Burnell, Nelda Kelly. Great job, friends! Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” You only hunger and thirst for what you don’t have. Jesus has come to fill us up with righteousness – His own righteousness. He is the self-giving Lord whose sacrifice inspires us to be givers, too.

The Lutheran Hour, sponsored by Immanuel. 7:30am Sundays at 96.7FM ...

November 13: "The Day of Hope Is Coming!" There is hope when God acts in the midst of our helplessness. (Malachi 4:1-6)

November 20: "In Christ, Deliverance Is Sure" Jesus breaks through into our dark world to bring us light and hope from above. (Colossians 1:13-20)

Welcome Students! ❖ We are blessed to have you as part of Immanuel. Thank the congregations of the Central Illinois District when you go home for break ... they fund the largest portion of our campus ministry. We're grateful! ❖ This Wednesday the 6:30pm meal is hosted by the Busse and France Family. They are faithful Cubs fans (congratulations!). Who knows? Maybe there will be a Cubbie theme (no roasted Cardinals!). ❖ Wednesday's 7:30pm Bible Study is in the Gospel of LUKE, CHAPTER 18. ❖ Volunteer for the Thanksgiving Meal on November 16. See the announcement below. ❖ Thanks, Devin Biggs for serving as our LSF President. You're doing a great job, along with your whole leadership board.

“All human governments, even bad ones, are actually God’s agents of stability and order. How wonderful when individual Christians and their congregations don't just hunker down and hide in their holy fortresses until judgment day. How wonderful when they get out into their communities and help, clean, repair, and build. How wonderful when their acts of love and mercy, given as freely as Christ’s love and mercy, touch and bless the lives of their neighbors, not just fellow church members. And how respectful when Christians refrain from ridiculing their elected officials, even when they strenuously disagree with them. To love God is also to love your country, you know.” Rev. Mark Jeske, www.timeofgrace.org – A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life • www.lutheransforlife.org

We're partnering with St. George's Anglican Church for our 4th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner with the good people of the McDonough County Housing Authority homes on November 16 at 5:00pm! Volunteers

needed! This project is being funded by another Thrivent Action Team Grant. Thanks be to God for our neighbors. Volunteers -- including college students -- will be needed at 3:30pm to set up tables at the Prairieview Community Center* and to transport the food from St.

George's to Prairieview. Additional volunteers are need at 4:45pm to serve and clean up the dinner. And plan to enjoy the Dinner with our

neighbors!

In A Democracy Almighty Ruler of us all,

you have made us to be

both Caesar and Caesar's subjects.

You have given us,

wrapped in the blessing of the free,

this dual and difficult duty to fulfill.

Give us the meekness of wisdom to know

that the good laws we make are not our laws simply

to do with as we please but have upon them

Your hallowed instancy,

Your inviolable majesty;

that when we make and honor bad laws,

we are flouting You, the Righteous, and You

will visit on us our unfaithfulness.

Teach us to know that the men we have elected

are Your instruments,

with Your sword in their hands.

Teach us to bow before Your

majesty hid in such deep disguise.

-- Martin Franzmann; Pray For Joy. CPH, 1970
