Getting the season underway in August, we’re proud to welcome back Manchester Pride with their Chamber Music Concert Series and a new theatre performance, LGBT: Unlikely Bedfellows.

Our resident string quartet, the Quatuor Danel will enthral with another programme of lunchtime and evening concerts.

We welcome Jeanette Winterson, newly appointed Professor of Creative Writing at The University of Manchester’s Centre for New Writing, who will be “in Conversation” for two un-missable events with A.M. Homes (22 October) and with Simon Armitage, Val McDermid and Jackie Kay for a Christmas special on 9 December. Our Literature Live series features more high profile authors including Paul Farley and Deryn Rees-Jones (15 October). This event also forms part of Manchester Literature Festival (8 - 23 October).

The Walter Carroll Lunchtime Concert Series continues with a varied and diverse programme of Thursday lunchtime concerts. The concerts are free and there’s no need to book, so you can just turn up on the day.

The drama productions on offer this autumn are equally diverse, ranging from Some Voices, which explores mental health issues, to comedy-horror with The House that Stank of Death for Halloween as well as another Drama Society Autumn Showcase and a spot of Russian Roulette with Solve.

During your visit you can also get refreshments from Café Arts, in the foyer, and order your interval drinks prior to the start of each event.

These are just a few events from this season’s exceptional programme. We hope you will be able to join us for these and other exciting events at the Martin Harris Centre. For details of the entire programme, please refer to the handy tear-out events guide at the back of this brochure.

Blackhand Theatre presents – Some VoicesFollowing their successful production of John Osborne’s kitchen sink classic, Look Back in Anger, last September, Blackhand bring Some Voices, a tough social drama written by British playwright Joe Penhall in 1994 as a response to newly enacted laws in Britain that released large numbers of the institutionalized mentally ill back into the general population.

“Some Voices is about the difficulties of assimilating in the metropolis.” – Joe Penhall

Some Voices tells the story of Ray, an enigmatic, wild-eyed schizophrenic patient who is released from psychiatric care to live with Pete, his overworked and overprotective brother. We follow Ray as he struggles to understand love, family, and ultimately, his place in the world. His grip on reality is tested when he meets and falls in love with Laura, a young pregnant woman who is trying to escape an abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Dave. Please note this performance contains smoking and the use of strong language. WE WELCOMEThe Orchestra that Fell to Earth The Penguin Cafe Orchestra first appeared in 1976 and went on to tour and record extensively throughout the eighties and nineties; pieces such as ‘Music for a Found Harmonium’ and ‘Telephone and Rubber Band’ became well-known through their frequent use in film soundtracks and advertisements.

Simon Jeffes, the PCO’s founder, sadly died in 1997. Since then the original line-up has appeared in public on only three occasions in 2007. This concert by ‘The Orchestra that Fell to Earth’ represents a rare opportunity to hear the music of the PCO performed by original members of the ensemble. The line-up includes long standing ‘Penguins’ Geoffrey Richardson, Jennifer Maidman, Steve Fletcher and Annie Whitehead. On percussion will be Liam Genockey of Steeleye Span who also played live with the original PCO in the eighties.
