I have always been athletic and started playing team sports at a young age. It wasn’t until my teenage years, as I entered high school, that sports become so time-constraining and competitive throughout the school year. I played volleyball, basketball, softball, and ran track in high school, which shows you that my entire school year entailed going to classes and then going to practice/games. A big part of my summer was just relaxing. When it came time to start volleyball camp it would always be a struggle to keep up, as I was never consistent with my workouts during the summer break. I remember my first week back every year was torture. I was out of breath, sore, and couldn’t keep up with the endurance exercises. Eventually it got easier as camp continued, but this was a constant routine that I hated going though. I would always say to myself, “If I just worked out during the summer, I would not be going through this misery of trying to get back in shape.” Although we all enjoy the “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer,” please take my story as a reminder that routine wellness is an important part of everyday life. Maintaining our health and physical fitness at any age is a way to keep ourselves strong both physically and mentally. When we do not maintain our physical wellness we tend to get weak, become depressed, lethargic, and struggle to get back to our best selves. Remember that as we age it gets harder to bounce back, so it is important to stay constant with physical activity. This month, I encourage you all to join the many exercise and fitness classes we offer here at the community. It won’t be easy at first, but if you continue the routine, it will become a habit that you will be happy you picked it up! Have a great August!

Sunny & SafeSummer Fun

The odds of developing skincancer rise as you age; nearly 40and 50 percent of Americans wholive to age 65 have a higherpossibility of having at least onetype of skin cancer. Skin cancermay be caused by manymutations accumulating over timeand the body’s immune system isresponsible for recognizing andkilling abnormal cells before theybecome cancerous. As you age, your immune system is less ableto fight infection and control cellgrowth. Many older adults thinkthat there’s no point in protectingthemselves since the damage hasbeen done, but it’s never too lateto help prevent further damageand lower your skin cancer risk. The Skin Cancer Foundation hasalways recommended using asunscreen with an SPF 15 orhigher as one important part of acomplete sun protection regimen.Sunscreen alone is not enough, however.

Here are a few ways to keepyourself well protected whilehaving safe, sunny summer fun.

1. Seek the shade, especiallybetween 10 AM and 4 PM.

2. Avoid tanning and UVtanning beds.

3. Cover up with clothing, including a broad brimmed hatand UV-blocking sunglasses.

4. Use a broad spectrum(UVA/UVB) sunscreen with anSPF of 15 or higher every day. Forextended outdoor activity, use awater-resistant, broad spectrum(UVA/UVB) sunscreen with anSPF of 30 or higher.

5. Apply 1 ounce (2tablespoons) of sunscreen to yourentire body 30 minutes beforegoing outside. Reapply every twohours or immediately afterswimming or excessive sweating.

6. Examine your skinhead-to-toe every month.

7. See your physician every yearfor a professional skin exam.
