The Map and Music of Matteo Ricci A multi-media performance to reanimate the pivotal cultural exchange between Italian Jesuits and Chinese literati in 17th-century China. This collaborative project features: PROJECTION of Ricci’s beautifully printed map, which he created in 1602 and presented to the Wanli Emperor in 1608. PREMIERE of the program was given in December 2010 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China. MUSIC old and new—this program includes Italian and Chinese music from Ricci’s time, dramatic readings of writings by Ricci and his contemporaries, and new music composed for ¡Sacabuche! by Chinese composer Huang Ruo. Traditional Chinese instrumentalists join ¡Sacabuche!, who perform on Baroque instruments. Featuring Stanley Ritchie (Baroque violin) and Wendy Gillespie (viol da gamba). PRE-CONCERT LECTURE / DEMONSTRATION from the fascinating text of Ricci’s map by Ann Waltner, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study and Professor of History, University of Minnesota. Demonstration and discussion of the Baroque instruments, Chinese instruments, and compositional process, as well as a panel discussion about the interdisciplinary collaborative process are also available. ¡Sacabuche! Founder and Artistic Director Linda Pearse teaches early trombone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music's Early Music Institute. She holds a master’s degree in early music performance at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, and performed in ensembles in Europe for over ten years before returning to North America.
