How ofen do you experience “magic” in your daily life? For us, it’s an everyday occurrence.

Dear Friends,

MAGIC is the chemistry between teacher and visiting scientist as they devise an experiment that brings the real world into the classroom. Magic is the “aha” moment when a kid grasps a geometry concept while building an architectural model. Magic is high-school mentors teaching their younger peers. Magic is the support of a talented community of volunteers.

Of course we know that magic is just the illusion of ease. All our accomplishments are not possible without generous supporters like you. Thanks to you, all District 97 students, no matter what their resources, receive OPEF’s free programs multiple times in grades K-8. Why is this important? Because when all kids share a language – whether in the arts, sciences or engineering – it provides a platform to propel them all forward. So much magic happens when they’re all on the same page!

Thank you for believing in the magic that partnerships between teachers and architects, engineers, artists and technology experts make in the education of a child. With your support, our 25th year broke all records! Between our FREE in-school programs and BASE Camp, we served nearly 5,000 students – 16% more than last year.

But we’re not resting on our laurels. We have big plans for sparking a love of learning in Oak Park students for the next 25 years. With your support, we will build stronger schools, a stronger district, and a stronger community.

Who knew it could TEACH so much!

What makes onion dome architecture unique – and what does it teach us? Lincoln third graders explored Russian architecture while learning about space, design and geometry. They shared their designs, creativity and discovery with their school community in the form of an embossed metal collage of 100 shimmering domes.

We get to play with LEGOs at school?’ Every third grader is engaged when it’s time for LEGO engineering. Building in teams, testing their designs, presenting their machines to the class – Geared Up sneaks in learning while these Holmes students are having fun.

Form a question…gather data…analyze the results…Science teaches kids to be critical thinkers. It’s a key life skill no matter what you want to be when you grow up! With Dr. Sally by their side, Longfellow third graders made comets, built astrolabes, and learned how the water in our bodies came from outer space.

Dramatic pileups, deftly handled robots weaving through tight corners, bots pulling themselves up into the air and even some tug-of-war – the VEX Robotics State Championship had it all! Months of sketching and designing, building and testing, programming and troubleshooting with middle-school team members and mentors paid off not only with two top awards, but also with the satisfaction of persevering at something really difficult – and loving every minute of it.
