will chime at 3 minutes, there will be two bells at 4 minutes
(which is what we want) and then a continuous bell will ring
at 5 minutes.
Impromptu Speeches

will chime at 1½ minutes, there will be two bells at 2 minutes
(which is what we want) and then a continuous bell will ring

What are the adjudicators looking for?
The adjudicators will make their decision based on the
manner, matter and method the contestants employ in
presenting their speeches. They will expect contestants to
be confident and engaging speakers. The prepared speeches
need to show an understanding of multiculturalism, and be
well developed and interesting. Contestants are also
expected to demonstrate a balance of personal opinion and
information in their speeches, as well as a balance of humour
and sincerity. Finally, adjudicators are required to give
equal consideration to the prepared and impromptu speeches
in making their decision. Detailed guidelines on how the
competition is judged will be available on our website at
www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au
Two students from Yrs 3/4 and two from Yrs 5/6 will be
selected to represent our school and participate in the local
final at Ross Hill Public School on Thursday 16 June 2016. I
will be taking the four students over to Tamworth. I
encourage any parents/guardians who are interested to join
us for an adventure.
DEBATING
The first of our Yrs 5/6 debating teams will be announced in
Week 5, and we will be debating against Bundarra Central
and Uralla Central schools soon after. We have a really
large squad of debaters this year, so IF your child isn’t
included in these first debates, they may be asked to be
part of the next debating teams.
Please contact me if you have any questions on 6772 3420.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—4
Congratulations to our Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 Choirs
and to our Chorale on their outstanding performances in the
Armidale Eisteddfod on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Our students were fine ambassadors for Armidale City and
displayed their wonderful talents. Thank you to Bekk
Baumgartner and Robyn Driscoll for all their hard work in
preparing our items and also to the staff at school for their
contributions as well. There are very few schools across
NSW who can claim that all students in the school are
involved in their choir program and this is a tremendous
achievement. Well done to everyone involved. Well done
also to students performing individually and as a part of
other groups at the Eisteddfod.
Our School Council AGM was held on Monday evening and
executive positions filled for the next two years. The new
chairperson is Ben Gooley and Secretary Tanya Howard.
Thank you to following outgoing members of Council for
their contributions over the past few years: Nathan
Craven, Kyra Moss and Tina Rubie and welcome to new
Council members Graham Knuckey and Robyn Hague. The
Council looks forward to working with the school to see our
students achieve to the best of their abilities. Council
meeting minutes are available at the school office if any
member of the community would like to ream through them
at any stage.
Our Years 3 and 5 students took part in NAPLAN last week
and are to be congratulated on their positive efforts in
completing all components. 100% of Year 5 and 95% of Year
3 completed NAPLAN–thank you to parents and families for
their support throughout this time.
Please feel free to send me an email at any time on the
address below. Enjoy the rest of the week everyone.

CRICKET NET
UPGRADE
We recently discussed replacing the black rubber in
the cricket nets as some children have been coming
home with black marks on their uniforms from the
deteriorating rubber. It looks like in partnership
with school we will be able to do this soon.
HOW MUCH DID
WE RAISE AT THE
FETE?
The numbers are still coming in (and
reimbursements going out!) from the fete so we’ll
hold off telling you how much money we raised until
the numbers are more definite. But it looks like we
raised more than last year so a big thank you again
to everyone who pitched in to support the fete.
OUR NEXT P&C MEETING will be in the
library on
Wednesday 1 June at 6:30pm
Before this we will have a Fete pizza
thank you and wrap up for all
stallholders and stall helpers.

SPORTS REPORT In the past couple of weeks, our school has been doing lots
of sport.
The Armidale City Public School Rugby League team and
Netball team lost their first games in the PSSA knockout.
Both teams tried hard, and are to be commended for their
sportsmanship and efforts.
Congratulations to Joey, Gideon and Sam, who have been
selected in the Armidale District Rugby Union team.
Congratulations to the following children who have been
selected in North West teams.
Rugby League: Sam, Jacob, and Steven.
Cricket: Sam.
Football: Mya, Angus and Nick. Mya and the boys will be
members of North West teams competing at State
Carnivals later this term.
We have 48 runners going to the District Cross Country on
Friday. Good luck to all the runners.
On Monday, the Boys’ Soccer
team played Nemingha in Round
1 of the PSSA knockout. It was
a great game with Armidale
City Public School winning 5-1.
The boys are still waiting to
hear who they will play next.

LIBRARY NEWS AUSTRALIAN STORIES
Now that Book Fair is over, we will be learning about classic
Australian Stories.
Kindergarten will be reading and viewing ‘Blinky Bill’, by
Dorothy Wall;
Stage 1 will be reading ‘Snugglepot and Cuddlepie’, by May
Gibbs;
Stage 2 will be reading and viewing ‘The Magic Pudding’, by
Norman Lindsey;
Stage 3 will be reading and viewing ‘Seven Little
Australians’, by Ethel Turner.
We are celebrating ‘Australian Stories’ this term because in
Term 3, the theme for Book Week is ‘Australian Stories’.
In Term 3 we will be concentrating on the Rio Olympic
Games.
Keep this in mind for ideas with an ‘Australiana’ theme to
represent Australian Authors and/or Illustrators and the
characters that they have brought to life - maybe a
character from a Mem Fox book such as ‘Possum Magic’,
‘The Green Sheep’, or the ‘Magic Hat’. A character from
an Andy Griffiths, ‘Tree Story’ series, a Paul Jennings
novel or a Jackie French historical novel could meet the
need. The options are endless.
MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT STUDENTS FROM YR 3 –
YR 6 WILL PRESENT A PREPARED SPEECH TO THEIR
CLASSROOM TEACHER. This will count towards the
students’ half yearly report. Students will present their
prepared speeches in Weeks 5 and 6.
For students that wish to be considered for the local
competition, they will need to deliver a prepared speech
and an impromptu speech, during their Library lessons, in
Weeks 6 and 7.
This year there are many topics that students may chose
from.
