Application will be made available on January 1st, 2016 with a due date of February 29th, 2016

Grade 9~12 students 14 students from Japan plus 7 students from California and 7 students from Hawaiʻi (28 students total) are selected through a general admission process.

July 17 – 31, 2016 (15 days)

The Change Academy is a unique immersive leadership learning opportunity for globally minded high school students from Japan and U.S., allowing them to meet together on the Hawaiian islands of Oʻahu and Kauaʻi during the summer. The Change Academy offers hands-on, project-based learning; team building; and cross-cultural dialogue. The experience will foster leadership skills and motivation for young future leaders to take positive action in their communities and obtain critical 21st-century workforce skills.

We seek to foster a “LŌKAHI generation” of young leaders who are committed to and engaged in bringing balance to the society, appreciate each other’s practices and values, and possess the fundamental skills and mindsets needed to be responsible for interactions of man and nature, contribute to and thrive in a more cooperative, prosperous, and harmonious world.

2017 Spring Break, California and Hawaiʻi students who participated in The Change Academy 2016 Summer will be eligible to join The Challenge Tour and reunite with Japanese students in Japan.

Tentative date : March 18 – 26, 2017 The Challenge Tour program details and fees are TBD. Participants will be responsible to contact their school and obtain leave of absence if required.

Scholarships: Special financial aid may be applied for qualifying students.

Summer 2016 Program Summary

July 17, 2016 Check-In, Orientation, Introduction July 17 – 19, 2016: North Shore, Oʻahu Team Building, Leadership Development, and Project-Based Learning

Participants will test their limits while enhancing their communication and cooperative skills both individually and in teams. These activities will help them build self-confidence and a stronger sense of community, equipping them with new skills that they can use in challenging situations throughout their lives.

July 20 – 22, 2016: Kauaʻi Experience Diversity & Local Culture

Hawaiʻi boasts a diverse and tolerant society, where people of different ethnic backgrounds live harmoniously. Students will be immersed in the local culture, which has roots in Hawaiian values, but has evolved as different cultures mixed together. Participants will experience Hawaiian culture through a homestay experience and participation in a Bon Dance festival.

July 23 – 24, 2016: Kauaʻi Meeting Community Leaders, Experience Nature, and History of Japanese in Hawaiʻi

Community leaders from Kaua’i will show students the natural beauty of the island, as well as what inspires their work, giving them a chance to learn about traditional resource management practices focusing on sustainability. They will also visit historical sites and learn about the Japanese history in Hawaiʻi.

The Change Academy is an inter-cultural summer program where students from diverse backgrounds meet and learn together throughout the program. The Summer 2016 leadership program focuses on celebrating cultural values, self-improvement, sustainability and community development. The program is based on active learning models in which participants have the opportunity to engage in issue-solving activities, case studies, and service learning.

July 25, 2016: University of Hawaiʻi Kapiʻolani Community College & University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Oʻahu Hawaiian History, Culture, Values

Participants will learn “the Aloha Spirit”, the Hawaiian hospitality philosophy by learning about Hawaii’s history, culture, values, and language. Through visiting to a loʻi (taro patches) students will learn about traditional farming methods and their use within a modern context, as well as the benefits of conservation in a modern society.

July 26 – 27, 2016: West Oʻahu & University of Hawaiʻi Kapiʻolani Community College Social Entrepreneurship, Agriculture, Food, and Sustainability

Staying at a farm-based community that celebrates the bounty of Hawaiʻi’s natural and cultural environment, participants will learn how organizations address some of the most pressing needs in their communities. Participants will learn about self-sufficiency, resource management, food safety, and educational and social entrepreneurial programs thorough work with these organizations. Participants will also visit Kapiʻolani Community College’s farmers’ market to conduct fieldwork interviews.

July 28 – 30, 2016: Honolulu, Oʻahu Visiting Local Organizations and Problem-Solving Case Studies

Participants will be divided into teams by areas of interest, to meet with local organizations and leaders, such as Blue Startup, Polynesian Voyaging Society, and Ma’o Organic Farms. They will learn about local challenges, and possible solutions to not only local, but global issues as well. During this time, students will do research projects in their field of interest, which could benefit local organizations.

July 31, 2016: Honolulu, Oʻahu Cross-Cultural Dialogue, Group Projects, and Presentations

The closing sessions and workshops include group projects based on concepts learned, excursions, active reflection, and cultural dialogue. Participants will have an opportunity to present their learning experiences and ideas for contributing, improvement, and rebuilding their hometowns, community, and in effect, the world around them.
