SS Warrimoo, Where and When?

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought the master, Captain John Phil-lips, the result. The Warrimoo’s position was latitude 0 degrees x 31 minutes north and longitude 179 degrees x 30 minutes west. The date was 30 December 1899. “Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “we’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check and double check the ship’s position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather and clear night worked in his favor. At midnight the “Warrimoo” lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre event were many. The forward part of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere and in the middle of summer. The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere and in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was 30 December 1899. Forward it was 1 January 1900.

Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron Presents

“Using GPS for Navigation”

GPS and chartplotters have dramatically changed how we navigate our boats. They offer many features that can help you navigate, especially when paired with paper charts and basic naviga-tion skills. Join us at the “Using GPS for Navigation” Seminar on June 21 at the Falmouth Li-brary. This seminar explains what GPS provides and how to use it to your advantage. You will learn about accuracy, planning with GPS, staying on course, and then how to check your navigation. You also will learn some tips and tricks to make your navigation task simpler and safer while freeing you up for other tasks. You will gain confidence in handling your GPS and navigation. We’ll also talk about digital charts and working with navigation software as complementary tools and options if you are looking to expand or upgrade your navigation gear.

Members of the Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron convened on Satur-day, April 16th for the Annual Change of Watch at the Brookside Club in Bourne. In addition to inducting new officers, the Change of Watch provides not only a recap of activities over the past year and an outlook for the coming year but more im-portantly recognizes the achievements of many of our volunteers.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize just some of the many members that have helped the Buzzards Bay Squadron grow and prosper over the past 54 years.

50 Year Members

Ronald Anderson, N joined the squadron on March 25, 1965, earned 18

Merit Marks and was recently awarded his 50 Year Plaque.

Albert (Sandy) Williams, N joined the squadron on December 17, 1964,

earned 14 Merit Marks and was recently awarded his 50 Year Plaque.

25 Year Members

Richard G Moore, AP and Past Commander. Dick has earned 25 Merit

Marks and is now a Life Member.

Edward “Pinty” Stimpson, P

Richard Van Heynigen, AP and has earned 3 Merit Marks

Hannes Tarney, S

Certificates of Appreciation were presented at The Change of Watch to those indi-viduals who assumed special projects that contributed to the well-being of the squadron. The Certificates are awarded by the squadron and are in addition to the Merit Marks that are awarded by our National Headquarters.

Congratulations and thank you to: Duane Bellingham, Anne Burbine, Andrew Campbell, Ron Church, Jerry Daly, Werner, “Diek” Diekmann, Ernie LeBlanc, Alan McCoy, Dick Moore, John Rossi, John Scavotto and Bob Sweet. Your contri-butions have led us through another successful year.

The Payson A Jones Vessel Inspection Award

Payson Jones was instrumental in building the Vessel Safety Inspection program for the Buzzards Bay Squadron and granted the award to that member who conducted the greatest number of Vessel Inspections in a given year. This year’s award is pre-sented to John Scavotto.

In the coming year, the squadron’s focus will continue to be on our educa-tional program that has been the backbone of the squadron. The ABC program will be offered to newer boaters and those that want to “brush up” on their boating skills. At the same time, we will continue the expansion of the seminar program. The semi-nar program allows us to target certain topics in short two hour Power Point presen-tations and the format provides us the ability to keep all seminars current with the latest changes and innovations within the marine industry.

View from the Bridge Continued In an effort to fulfill your expectations from the squadron, we will be developing a short, on-line survey

to learn more about what you as members would like to see the squadron doing. It is hoped that the survey will provide feedback as to educational programs and topics you would like to see offered as well as to determine what types of social events should be planned. The results of the proposed survey will help us plot our course for the foreseeable future.

Once again we are experiencing a typical Cape Cod spring; wet, windy and cold! Hopefully, the real spring will arrive soon and boats will once again be populating our waters.

Good sailing, Frank Lingard *****************************************************************************************

Watch Coast Guard Helicopter Rescues

Watch daring Coast Guard Search & Rescue training exercises while enjoying the opening of Safe Boating Week from the comfort of Surf Drive Beach. The Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron, partnered with the Cape Cod Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, has quite a show arranged for you on Saturday, May 21st start-ing at 10am on Surf Drive Beach in Falmouth.

The Coast Guard search and rescue teams located at Air Base Cape Cod are among the best in the country. We are very fortunate to have such highly skilled and trained personnel and top-notch equipment nearby. They will be supported by boats and experienced staff from Coast Guard Station Cape Cod and local Auxiliarists.

The Coast Guard has agreed to demonstrate a variety of search and rescue exercises to show how boaters are rescued from a boat and from the water in the event of an emergency at sea. It’s good to know how they do it and what we can expect if some day we might need to avail ourselves of their assistance. This is a rare oppor-tunity to see how our Coast Guard operates.

In addition to the helicopter rescues there will be demonstrations of rescue flares and meteors, life jackets and more. Multiple organizations will be available to answer questions and to provide boating information that you may find valuable as we begin our boating season. We look forward to seeing you there. The event will be ob-served from the parking lot at the Town of Falmouth’s Surf Drive Beach facility.

Get there early and get a good parking spot

Welcome !

Please join me in welcoming our newest member Patti Keating to the Buzzards Bay Sail & Power
