Summer is in full swing and the boating industry from all accounts seems to be alive and well once again. At least that is what it looked like last Sunday after-noon from Bassets Island to Waquoit Bay. Boats everywhere and why not; the weather was perfect, the winds fair and fuel prices the lowest in recent memory.

The boat dealers are generally pleased with the uptick in boat sales this year in both new and used boats. However the trend in new boat sales seems to be tilting a little more towards power boats and specifically the center console style boats. That sounds like heresy to our local sailors who thrive for the legendary winds of Buzzards Bay and the beloved tranquility of sailing. But rest assured, like every-thing else, it is a cyclical change.

So what has changed in boating over the past few years? The hull designs for both sail and power boats have changed creating larger interior space with more creature comforts and designs with longer waterlines to improve performance and gain better fuel efficiencies. Sail designs have become more hi-tech with new exotic sailcloths. And, composites have lightened rig designs contributing to improved per-formance and handling of sailboats. Outboards are now more dependable than ever with the new four stroke and ETEC designs. Boat handling has become easier with the development of “Pods” and Jet Drives that allow for joy-stick precision in ma-neuvering. And finally there are the new electronics. Whoever would have thought that we would have “touch-screen navigational displays and broadband radar to help make navigation safer?

So what else has changed? The customer? Just like everything else, the in-dustry has been forced to adapt to meet the needs and expectations of the newer gen-erations. With more demanding family commitments and busy schedules, boaters are looking for larger living and recreational space, more creature comforts, ease of handling, a zero learning curve, less maintenance and greater speed along with greater efficiencies to reach their destinations quicker. A tall order but one that the boating industry is slowly winning!

So what else is changing? Well fortunately organizations like the Power Squadron are starting to adapt their boating educational programs to better meet the expectations of today’s boating family. The traditional Basic Boating Course cou-pled with new On-line courses and seminars are starting to change the way we ap-proach boating education.

And I am proud to say that over the past couple of years, the Buzzards Bay Squadron has led the way in this area by designing and offering a series of short 2-hour seminars with targeted topics with the most up-to-date information and tech-niques. This approach has better allowed us to meet the ever changing expectations of our members but most importantly, it is starting to attract both new and experi-enced boaters in greater numbers to our seminars. The student’s time commitment is minimal, the cost less and the content the most up-to-date.

Yes, we are changing with the times and as with all the challenges facing the entire boating industry, it is an evolving process. Our next series of seminars will start in the fall and I would encourage you to attend one or more seminars just to experience our ever changing educational program.

Good sailing, Frank Lingard

AIS and Virtual Navigation

The Automatic Identification System, better known as “AIS” allows ships to identify each other

while underway by continuously sharing their location, speed and course electronically with oth-

er AIS equipped ships. Introduced in 2002, AIS provides ships with another set of eyes and ears

while on the water and in 2014 AIS is now able to share information on “virtual” and “synthetic”

navigational aids designed to make our waterways safer.

What does all this mean? Today you may find yourself navigating local waters by GPS and sud-

denly you see an AIS target on your chartplotter screen with information pertaining to a naviga-

tional aid but, the navigational aid is nowhere to be seen. Is it really there and if so, can it help

you navigate safely?

Today the answer is yes, as the Coast Guard now can use AIS technology to identify both

“actual” and “virtual” aids of navigation and transmit the characteristics and coordinates of each

to electronic charts and other navigational displays including your AIS equipped chartplotter.

This technology is now fully operational throughout the United States except in the Great Lakes.

Yes, the age of “virtual navigation” is upon us and it is working!

The AIS capability to transmit information on Aids to Navigation fall into three categories; Syn-

thetic, Real and Virtual with each having different uses and applications.

The “Synthetic” aid is a physical buoy or marker that transmits only its exact position

every three minutes to a shore station who, in turn, will broadcast a signal with the

buoy’s MMSI number, similar to your VHF MMSI, to the ship when it may be viewed

on the chartplotter. From the helm, you will see the real buoy bobbing in the water at

the indicated position even though the buoy is not equipped with AIS.

The “Real” or actual aid to navigation will be equipped with AIS technology capable of transmitting

its own signals. For example, a buoy will have a GPS chip and AIS transmitter installed along with

its own power supply capable of broadcasting all the buoy characteristics and location. This real time

navigational data can then be displayed on your AIS equipped chartplotter and integrated radar.

The “Virtual” aid allows the Coast Guard to broadcasting a signal from a base station to a “virtual

spot” where there is no physical aid to navigation. This “virtual spot" can only be seen with an AIS

equipped chartplotter or integrated radar. The advantage of the virtual aids is that they allow the

Coast Guard to deploy navigational markers on a temporary basis or in emergencies, for example in

cases of shoaling or with a sunken vessel. In fact, the Coast Guard used virtual aids to designate se-

curity zones to control spectator fleets during the recent America’s Cup series in San Francisco and

virtual aids were also deployed last winter on the east coast to mark shipping channels when tradi-

tional navigational aids were dragged off station by heavy ice flows.

Virtual navigation is a reality and unbeknownst to some recreational boaters, they are now using the new tech-nology when viewing AIS data on their chart-plotters and integrated radar units. There has been little fanfare about the new technology but the “virtual” information is helping boaters better identify navigational aids and better navigate safe passages. As technology advances, boaters now have more advanced information to ensure our safety and the safety of others. Navigational equipment is also advancing quickly as we are now seeing VHF radios integrated with AIS receiving technology and it is likely that future GPS units will soon automatically include AIS capabilities. *Reference: Boat U.S. Website

Education Report

The USPS ABC course is the cornerstone of our education offerings and the major public offering. We offer this during the Fall, Spring, and in the Summer for 12 -15 year old students. This gives these students the opportunity to obtain their MA safe boating certificate, which allows them to oper-ate a boat without on board adult supervision this Summer (assuming their parents let them). On Saturday July 9, Frank Lingard, Bob Sweet, and Dick Moore presented the ABC class to 14 eager 12-15 year old students at the Falmouth Library. Because the entire ABC 8 hour course is being pre-sented in a single day, this is a very intense experience for the students, and one which demands their full attention and effort. At a time of year when they have just completed final exams in school this can be a challenge. Congratulations to all 14 students who completed the ABC class successfully:

Nicholas Cavosa Grace Connolly Katherine Connolly Michael Connolly John Hamilton Sarah Heald Hunter Mulvey Jacob O’Connor Ryan O’Connor Ryan Palmer Tyler Rose George Young Leighton Young Mary Young

And a BIG THANK YOU to their parents who made sure they all completed the pre course assign-ment, had what they needed for the day, and arrived on time for the class. ABC BBSPS will offer a Fall ABC class at the Falmouth Public Library located at 300 Main Street Fal-mouth, MA on two successive Saturdays September 24/October 1. Attendance on both days is re-quired. Seminars BBSPS will offer a Fall Seminar series in the time period September – November. The details will be announced in next month’s LOG. Respectfully Submitted, Richard Moore, SEO
