The quirky celebration of independent cinemathat is the Lower East Side F ilm Festival returns tolocal venues this month for its fourth year in theneighborhood.

Festival directors Damon Cardasis, ShannonWalker, Roxy Hunt and Tony Castle, all filmmakersin their own right, started out showing low-budgetf ilms in a tiny pop-up storefront on Norfolk Streetin 2011. The team made sure they were relaxedevents, with the f ilmmakers in attendance but with-out the stuffy VIP atmosphere.

Screenings were BYOB and there was always a

fun party afterward.Theyve since moved on to bigger venues, but

the idea is still about f inding weird places to watchmovies with friends, says Castle.

Building off ideas like last years drive-in moviescreening in a parking lot on Broome Streetwhichfeatured Zipcar seating, circus performers and DJduo AndrewAndrew mixing tunes out of the bedof a pickup truckthis years schedule touts a Fri-day the 13th Pool Party at the top of SIXTY LES,the hotel formerly known as the Thompson LES.The audience is invited to enjoy the hotels AndyWarhol filmstrip pool while watching the featuredshort, Dragula, a musical comedy starring Barry

Bostwick, Rob Riggle, Missi Pyle, Cheyenne Jack-son and Carmen Electra. As with most LES Film Fes-tival events, the team promises surprise guests andwacky live performances throughout the evening.

The festival always includes prominent judgeswith Lower East Side ties and this year is no differ-ent: drummer Marky Ramone from The Ramoneswill preside over the new music video category.

Other 2014 celebrity judges include actor Den-nis OHare, -." =&A403 !"1#&'( producer DanaBrunetti and e0741B f04'editor Chris Rovzar.

    How has the team grown?

We used to have to carry our own equipmentto the venue, set it all up ourselves, pour the drinks, take it all down and carry it home. This year we havea bigger team, so were hoping someone else willbe setting up all the stuff for us so we can focus onconnecting the filmmakers to the audience and dis-tributors, says Castle. But well probably still bepouring the drinks, he laughs.

What do you miss from the old LES?What I miss most from the old LES is the EssexTheater. I never f igured out its name, consideringit was on Grand Street, but I always enjoyed thegreat movies, especially because it was close tomy apartment.

Is there a new arrival (restaurant, shop, at-traction) you love? Why?

The new arrival that I love is the Association of La-tino Business Owners and Residents (ALBOR). It isa community organization driven by people fromthe community who are here to help in a lot ofways. They've even helped in building gardens, getting kids school supplies for the new year, sponsoring Little League, helping tenants andlandlords and assisting the moms and pops ofsmall businesses that are struggling. What do you do?

I helped to create, manage and operate my fami-ly's bodegas and businesses, all of which are in theneighborhood, like Stop 1 and E&S WholesomeFoods.

Tell us about your apartment the good, the bad and the ugly.I love my apartment; its on Suffolk Street. It's veryconvenientin walking distance to my job and ev-

For our regular feature spotlighting the people

who live and work on the Lower East Side, we

talked with bodega owner and lifelong LES

    resident Orlando Rodriguez.

One of the strangest is also one of the hardestmemories I have. One day as a kid at about 15 yearsold, I was walking down Stanton Street and saw aman get shot right in front of my eyes. As my com-munity has changed a lot over the years, the memo-ries of the past and the "old LES" will forever be areminder of where we came from.

    Whos the best neighborhood character

    youve met and why?

Clayton Patterson would be the best neighborhoodcharacter I have met because he has been here fora very long time and has fought all the good f ights, both for and on behalf of this community.

Tell us your best LES memory.

My best LES memory, I must say I have a lot, wouldbe when I opened my very own deli on MadisonStreet; it was a dream for me. That's the type ofbusiness my family grew up doing. So I helped mycousins make their dreams come true, too, byhelping them do the same and have their own. With the exper ience I had from opening my f irststore, I then created E&S Wholesome Foods and Inow manage my family's businesses in my neigh-borhood. What better memory than to serve yourown community in which you grew up?
