SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Eastlink Centre has great opportunities for Naming Rights on many different components in the building. The value of Sponsorship versus purchasing of advertising, is more promi-nent locations for signage, and sponsorship rewards include employee discounts based on the value of the sponsorship. The other benefit is that a Sponsorship guarantees long term commitment. What does this mean? This means that it gives you an opportunity for a higher valued Sponsorship which may be amortized over the term of the sponsorship, allowing you even greater exposure.

One other kind of sponsorship is our ‘EVENT’ Sponsorship. We are constantly creating new events at Eastlink Centre and we are always looking for Title Sponsors. How about a Racquetball or Basketball Tournament or maybe a Marathon named aer your business? Just let us know what interests you the most!

These are great ways to get your name on a key component that speaks to your business goals, vision and community investment.

Have you noticed our stroller / scooter parking inside the front door? This is a great area to lock up your ‘wheels’ while you are in the facility. Scooters and skateboards

are not allowed throughout the building. Thank you for your cooperation.

Spring has sprung and sum-mer is just around the corner! It is awesome to go out now and see the sun shining well into the evenings. Sometimes people think of us as a place to go in the winter months, but we continue to have large volumes of patrons in the facility even now. This fact certainly sup-ports the idea that this building is not just a seasonal facility but a year round resource for recreation and sport, but now as we move into the summer months, tourism too. Even though the building is still a ‘newborn’, and the first year of learning has been just like a child taking its first baby steps to discover the world around it. The staff, continue to strive to meet the goals, expectations and challenges face on and always achieving those amazing successful moments when they know they have taken a really big step towards growth.

We have taken huge strides towards the Aquatics closures of the past and you will see a marked improvement in the future towards less and shorter closures. We continue to ask for the public’s support in helping to curb this issue by acting re-sponsibly while in the Aquatics area.

Every day, it is exciting to be in a facility that is a-buzz with activities and things happening everywhere. There is no limit to the people we see here enjoying the services, from babies to seniors, fitness, aquatics, children’s ser-vices and just your regular old ‘play’ are all being utilized to the maximum. But the great thing is with the warm weather it allows us to expand outdoors to the Skateboard Park (though it needs to be noted some die-hard skateboarders

sweetheartfamily dance

What an amazing time we all had at the 1st Annual Sweetheart Family dance, February 16th, 2013. Over 250 people came out to shake it to the mixings of Flips DJ Franklin Matias, while enjoying delec-table goodies, a candy bar, face painting, photo booth and even a craft centre.

We wanted to celebrate both Valen-tine’s Day and the Family Day weekend with something a little different. And, we are so glad we did! The combination of the two events paid off. Children came

dressed to the nines and once they hit that dance floor, had a total ball! One of our favourite memories from the event is watching entire families out on the dance floor performing Gangnam Style. What an absolute hoot!!

Thank you to all who came out and made this such a special event for us. We all had such a wonderful time that we will definitely be putting on this event again next year.

Eastlink Centre came alive on March 30, when we held our Easter Celebration. The excit-ment and smiles were conta-gious! There was a huge blow up obstacle course set up in the fieldhouse, a spring inspired photo booth on Rotary Avenue, cookie and egg decorating along with crafts and facepainting on the second level concourse. The Aquatics area also got into the

spirit by hosting a number of fun games in the pool, like catch the eggs on the Free FM FlowRider. To top it all off, the Easter Bunny and Wobbly the Clown stopped by to entertain us all.

Along with fun filled activi-ties throughout the build-ing, we also had a search for the “Golden Egg.” We strategically hid nine huge Golden Eggs throughout

the building. Winners turned the eggs in for a basket filled with Easter goodies.

A big thank you to everyone who entered our Easter Colouring Contest. We loved having them up on our walls.

Adapted Physical Activity Symposium

In March the Eastlink Centre had the opportunity to host its largest Symposium to date. The event was the Adapted Physical Activity Symposium sponsored by the Steadward Centre, Eastlink Centre, GPRC, and the Canadian Parapalegic Association. The symposium had well over 100 aendees including Instructors, Physical Therapists and

disabled participants who utilize the adapted services on a regular basis. Unfortunately, a sudden spring snow storm did impact many participants coming from further away, but the

turn out was very positive!

The Symposium was split into three days with the first two being held at the Eastlink Centre and the last day at GPRC. The first evening was a casual registration with wine and

cheese mixer, the second day provided several seminars and practical application of adapted services utilizing the aquatics pools, Servus Court Fieldhouse, Ernie’s Fitness Centre and Evergreen Energy Rooms. Participants got hands-on experience with wheelchair basket-ball, Krank Spin classes, adapted swimming and therapy available

through the T.A.P Program here at Eastlink Centre and a demonstration of the fitness equipment available for users in wheelchairs.

The two days also provided a tradeshow for the aendees to visit. Organizations and businesses who provide services specifically to adapted needs were on hand to provide information and opportunities.

The Symposium certainly provided a great experience for all its aendees and we look forward to hosting future events like this one!

There are few words to describe 40 year old Tanya Mah but ‘inspirational’ is a good start! At her heaviest, Tanya was 184 lbs at 5’2” and tired of huffing and puffing while carrying laundry up the stairs, tired of feeling tired, agitated all the time and tired of all the excuses to not eat healthy. She knew it was time to change her life. “One day at a time” Mah says “and to be healthy for life.” Initially, her goal was a 10k race and when she started running her competitive side began evolving from when she was a kid. So, began the journey and as it progressed, she decided to get back into training and change other peoples lives too. Which is why you may recog-nize Tanya as one of the Personal Fitness Trainers here at Eastlink Centre, where she is dedicated to helping others and then training herself too. Tanya’s friend and fellow trainer, the man she respects most of all is Winston Greene, who set her on the fitness journey and “to him I owe so much” says Mah. “Lile did I know, the hours of talking about bodybuilding during training sessions, would one day lead me down the same path. I’ve always been interested in Bodybuilding and decided one day to take the leap.”

The organization that she belongs to is NPC (National Physique Commit-tee) and the ABBA (Alberta Bodybuilding Association). Tanya is a FIGURE Competitor. FIGURE Competitors are scored on 1/4 turns which are graded on the following: Muscularity with Separation, Overall Muscle Tone and Healthy Appearance.

The training schedule for her recent NCP Muscle competition was very rigorous including: 3 day split routines (example: back and chest, legs and abs), cardio in the morning, weight training in the evenings, 1 and 1/2 hour weights, 45 min cardio and a¢er all that, there is a very strict diet to adhere to as well. As competitions grow closer, workouts become more intense. Tanya’s goal was to qualify for the 2014 Arnold Armature. She placed 5th in her category and 4th in OVERALL. Tanya has now qualified for the US Nationals in Las Vegas and the Arnold Armature for next spring and is officially a NPC FIGURE Competitor. Long term goals include becoming a judge. “I wanted to lay the foundation before I began the journey to the judging table. I believe you have to experience what every athlete has gone through in order to fully embrace any sport that you are judging” replies Mah. “The whole experience has humbled me and I appreciate what God has given me. I have a new found respect for the men and woman who Body-build. As a trainer, I know what it takes to put on muscle but until you are actually commied and have to endure the diet, workouts, critisism, balancing family, friendships, having a job and finding time to get enough sleep – you really have no idea of the sacrifice that is involved. I never imagined, that I would love to bodybuild since I am a half marathon runner. I have also learned it takes a village for one to succeed. Yes, at the end of the day, I'm the one on stage. However, without the support of family, friends, and fellow trainers – one can not truly succeed. Success is not measured by a placing or a trophy, it’s measured by the sheer fact, you competed for your goal and that in itself is the greatest reward” says Mah. “Dusty Sage has become a great friend along the way and her determina-tion and drive inspires me. My good friend and fellow trainer, Spencer Partch ( a fellow trainer at Eastlink Centre) inspires me. Both have been by my side this entire time and I can depend on them for almost anything. Also, as a mom of 3 young children, I am in awe of any mother that is willing to climb on stage a¢er having 1 or 6 kids! They deserve the recognition and my utmost respect. Through this sport, I meet new people who inspire me to be a beer trainer, a beer athlete and a beer mother.” concludes Mah.

Project C3 is well underway! Connect • Collaborate • Create • All words to describe the focus in our new program room: project C3, located on the main floor next to the Squash and Raquetball courts.

There has been such an overwhelm-ing demand for everything here at the Eastlink Centre that we have

started to look for creative ways to make space and offer Grande Prairie more!

Project C3 is one of these spaces. To this point, the room has been used pri-marily for Child & Youth Services pro-grams. If you have a child that frequents the Day Camps you will know what this room has brought to these events.

Watch for Grand Opening Celebration

The children have their own space to connect, collaborate and create. This has allowed our Child & Youth Services department to offer more programs, camps and quality events for the children and youth of Grande Prairie.

The excitment is just starting. Watch for the project C3 grand opening celebration!! And upcoming programs in the room.

780-357-7526 fitnessI have been practicing Yoga for 13 years and there’s so much to Yoga that the general public isn’t aware of. Yoga offers a lot emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically. I love working out and being motivated externally though I find my Yoga practice inspires power and motiva-tion within myself!

New to Yoga or fitness?Remember to breathe long deep breaths, balanced meals (fats/proteins/carbs), hydrate (water filtering system is ideal), comfortable clothes, bring someone that motivates you and you them, don’t expect results overnight as most true results take a few weeks. Find ways to inspire yourself and have fun with the process!

Yoga and FlexibilityWhen some people think of yoga, they imagine having to stretch like a gymnast.

That makes them worry that they’re too old, unfit or “tight” to do yoga. The truth is you’re never too old to improve flexibility.

The series of yoga poses called asanas work by safely stretching your muscles. This may release the lactic acid that builds up with muscle use, which may cause stiffness, tension, pain and fatigue. In addition, yoga increases the range of motion in joints. It may also increase lubrication in the joints. The outcome is a sense of ease and fluidity throughout your body.

Yoga stretches not only your muscles but all of the soft tissues of your body. That includes ligaments, tendons and

the fascia sheath that surrounds your muscles. And no matter your level of yoga, you most likely will see benefits in a very short period of time.

What is restorative Yoga?Restorative yoga isn’t a traditional classification or style of yoga. It is, rather, a category that has emerged among yoga

practitioners to let you know that this is going to be a very gentle class.

Any class called “restorative” is intended to be gentle, and as the word suggests, restorative. These classes most often incor-porate a variety of yoga props, including bolsters, blankets and blocks, and you will most likely find yourself holding poses for longer than you would in an average hatha yoga class.

Whether you’re exhausted from a long day at work, a beginner, have health or mobility issues, or you’re simply in the mood for a relaxing class, restorative yoga is designed to go easy on you and make you feel better com-ing out than you did going in.

When should I place my child into private lessons? If you are finding your child is stuck in a certain level several times, private lessons can help them overcome what it is that might be holding them back. If it is a fear of water, working one-on-one with an instructor can help conquer that fear. We also have an adaptive swimming program to support the needs of those with different needs, or challenges in life.

What is the difference between Adapted Swimming Lessons and Red Cross Swimming lessons? Our adaptive swimming program is an individualized swimming and water activity program offered to persons with physical, mental or behavioral limita-tions who might otherwise have difficul-ties in main stream swimming lessons. We can adapt the Red Cross program to suit the students’ needs or focus on specific goals such as water safety, or getting active. We can provide one-on-one lessons or join student in main stream lessons for support.

Do the adapted swimming instructors have special training? Our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors from the Red Cross as well taken the Swimmers That Move workshop. We are continually learning and seeking more training to do the best we can for all of our students. We have also been working with the Canadian Red Cross on developing an Adapted Swimming course for instructors, Red Cross Swim Steps. What other programs are offered for my child with special needs?Currently we can offer one-on-one lessons, have an adapted instructor join your child in main stream lessons or or-ganize smaller class sizes. We are look-ing to develop summer camps and after school programs. If there is anything in particular you would like to see please don’t hesitate to contact Rebecca McTa-vish at the Eastlink Center.

staff

Meet those familiar faces around the

If you are a regular around the Eastlink Centre you start to get to know folks who work here, so we wanted to share a few familiar faces with you so next time you say Hi, you will know who they are!

Joyce NeaseCustodial

Hi! My name is Joyce Nease and I have been with the City about 2 years. It was a goal of mine to work for the City because my brother-in-law, Merle Oliver who works for Transportation always said what a great organization the City was to work for. I started off working at the Coca - Cola Centre as a Rink Rat then transferred over to Eastlink Centre to be working in custodial. I could not wait for opening day, I was so excited to start working here. Who wouldn’t be? I work with an awesome team and the staff here are all so great. It is just like a huge family!

I was born and raised in Grande Prairie and I have 2 beautiful daughters, Tania and Kaylynn who I love to spend my free time with.

I look forward to coming to work everyday so I can see all the new friends I have made here at Eastlink Centre.

What a great place to work!!

Catherine “CAT” HollingworthMarketing Coordinator HEY ALL!

I’m Cat … third window on the le at the Fieldhouse ;) I won’t lie to you; I basically have the greatest job in Grande Prairie! I have been the Marketing Coordinator here at the Eastlink Centre for just over a year and have loved every minute of it. I have a graphic design background, studying Information Design at Mount Royal University. At the Eastlink Centre, I have the privilege of taking care of the majority of the creative needs for the building, think posters, signage and “the link” magazine! I also work on the website and all of our social media feeds: facebook, twier and flickr. Doesn’t even sound like work does it?

Outside of work I chase aer three beautiful kids and soccer balls. I am very active in the Grande Prairie Soccer community. I play in the Grande

Prairie Women’s League for the Crew, coach my children in both House League and in the Wolves Soccer Club. Man, I’m tired just thinking about it! But, sport in general has been a huge part of my

family’s life from the very beginning. I have gone on to play both ACAC Soccer and Volleyball, my brother Brian plays in the CFL for the Montreal Alouees and my baby brother Thomas is an avid triathlete. We oen talk about how lucky my kids have it to have such an amazing facility to enjoy at Eastlink Centre! It just brings so much energy to Grande Prairie, and I am so proud to be a part of it.
