The Light of St. John’s November, 2017
“Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” — Psalm 85:6
Five hundred years ago Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the church door in
Wittenberg, Germany, and set in motion a movement that forever changed the
Christian Church. Though many other factors joined to launch the Protestant Refor-
mation, God used a revival in Luther’s heart to start a revival of Christianity in his
time.
Psalm 85 calls for a revival that begins with the Holy Spirit working in our hearts
that brings a refreshing return to God with passion and zeal. Revival is not a ran-
dom burst of energy and emotion, but rather is based on God’s eternal truth found in
the Bible. For Luther and other Reformers of the 16th century, the revival that came
to be called the Protestant Reformation was based on five enduring principles.
True Christian faith is based on Scripture alone, on salvation in Christ alone, by
grace alone and through faith alone—and all of this is for glory to God alone.
These five points summarize the key principles of the Reformation and live on to-
day in the Creeds and Confessions which we use in worship each week.
Luther believed that the Church would always be in need of reform. Heresies have a
way of creeping into our Christian theology in every time and age as people start to
add doctrines that God’s word doesn’t teach, or people begin to ignore whole parts
of God’s word with which they disagree. Unfortunately, many Christians today are
influenced more by what the world says rather than what God’s word says. And this
world view, when allowed to exist in the church or even worse preached from the
pulpit, undermines God’s eternal word. This is why it is so important that each per
son be grounded in Scripture and be able to fully articulate what God’s word
teaches regarding repentance from sin and salvation by grace.
Are these five lasting principles at work in our lives? As we ponder these teachings
that were rediscovered long ago, may their truth work in our hearts to strengthen
and revive us, making us agents of revival wherever God has placed us. Let us
equip ourselves to be knowledgeable proclaimers and defenders of biblical truth, let
us speak the truth in love to those who need to hear it, and may we be eager to
spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world and thereby spark a new reformation
of the church and culture.
Blessings,
Pastor Terry

Martin Luther chose All Saints Eve (October 31) to send his Ninety Five Theses to the Archbishop and even after the Reformation,
both Lutheran and Anglican traditions retained the celebration of All Saints Day(November 1) as a time to honor those who had been faithful. Since most years November 1st falls on a weekday the Sunday following November 1st is celebrated as All Saints Sunday On All Saints Sunday, November 5th, St. John’s Lutheran will honor those who have gone on before us this past year.
