2019 Catholic Appeal

In the Gospel today, Jesus reminds us that we are known

by the fruits of our generosity. In opening the doors of

our hearts to this season of Lent, may we consider

supporting those who turn to the Church for assistance,

through life-changing ministries such as Addiction

Recovery Services or the Faith Community Nursing

program. Your gift to the 2019 Catholic Appeal provides

half of the funding for many important programs that

enrich parish life, our Catholic schools, and the lives of

many. Every gift has an immediate impact in our parish

communities. Please find more information about this

life-changing work in today’s bulletin insert or visit our

website at bostoncatholicappeal.org to view our latest

video about the Appeal. Thank you!

40 CANS FOR LENT

Wednesday the 14th is the beginning of Lent and The Knights of Columbus #347 of Whitman will be conducting a food drive during the 40 days of lent to benefit St Vincent DePaul/Whitman Food Pantry. The pantry informed us that last year they assisted over 250 families throughout the year. This year items most ask for are those that cannot be purchased with food stamps. Such as, laundry detergent, dish soap, tooth paste, shampoo and conditioner, razor blades, diapers and wipes along with cleaning supplies and other toiletries. We ask that everyone consider bringing one item per each day of Lent. Please shop the sales and use coupons to help the food pantry to ease food insecurity in our home town. Thank you and God Bless!

Attention all High School boys: The Vocation Office invites you to a St. Andrew’s Dinner. St. Andrew, of course, was the younger brother of St. Peter. Andrew introduced Peter to Jesus. This Dinner is an evening of prayer, food, and conversation. Following Evening Prayer and dinner, you will be welcomed to a casual discussion with Seminarians and with Cardinal Seán about vocations, prayer, and the call to holiness that God places on each of our hearts. Each young man will have the chance to meet Cardinal Seán and have a picture with him. The date of the next St. Andrew’s Dinner is Tuesday, March 26. It will take place at Sacred Heart Parish in Quincy. Please contact Fr. Mahoney directly to register for this event.

Our Collaborative Vocation Team is asking all parishioners to “adopt” Boston Seminarians each week to pray for their vocations. We are now highlighting one member of the Ordination Class of 2019 each week until they are Ordained on May 19, 2019. This week, please pray for Deacon Przemyslaw Kasprzak. Deacon Paul is studying at Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary. He comes from the Slupsk, Poland. Please pray for him and all seminarians.

A Prayer for Seminarians O Lord Jesus Christ, great High Priest, I pray that You call many worthy souls to Your holy priesthood. Enlighten the Bishop in the choice of candidates, the Spiritual Director in molding them, and the professors in instructing them. Lead the seminarians daily in Your unerring footsteps; so that they may become priests who are models of purity, possessors of wisdom and heroes of sacrifice; steeped in humility and aflame with love for God and man; apostles of Your glory and sanctifiers of souls. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us. As you pray for more vocations, please pray for our 9 priests and 2 deacons who have died since January 1st. Rev. John P. Fitzpatrick, Rev. John R. McNeil, Rev. Paul T. Keyes, Rev. Albert A. Sylvia, Rev. William J. O’Connor, Rev. Eugene L. Alves, Rev. Paul F. Bailey, Deacon Howard P. Hardin, Most Rev. Walter J. Edyvean, S.T.D., Rev. Vincent R. Maffei, and Deacon Gerald P. Ryan. Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney

REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE:

ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence. FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Light of Christ Catholic Collaborative, Lent is right around the corner, just a few days away. The key to understanding the meaning of Lent is simple: Baptism. Preparation for Baptism and for us to renew our Baptismal Commitment is at the heart of this season. We are called to renew our understanding of this important season and to see how we can strengthen our personal relationship with Jesus by the way we live our lives. Today’s readings on this Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time actually help us to do this. Changing our hearts is at the core of our First Reading and Gospel today. Agricultural examples are given. “The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had.” "A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit.” Jesus tells us that a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks." This could be the center of our prayer during this upcoming season of Lent. Whatever you decide to “do” for Lent, simply make sure that it causes your heart to be more like Jesus and His heart. That will bring us Joy at Easter! Last Saturday our Deacons hosted a Retreat for all those involved in Ministries in our Collaborative. It was called “Disciples on a Journey.” We had 100 participants. It was a Wonderful, Spirit-filled day. Thank you to Deacon Paul and the Retreat Planning Team for all their time and energy to bring about such a beautiful day for our Ministers. Remember that Next Weekend, March 10, begins Daylight Savings Time. Turn your clocks forward one hour before going to bed on Saturday night. No one wants to be an hour late for Mass on Sunday. Lent begins THIS WEDNESDAY, March 6! To accommodate as many people as possible, our Ash Wednesday Schedule, March 6 will be: 9:00 a.m. Mass in each Church. In addition: Holy Ghost will have a 4:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday Service and St. Bridget’s will have a 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday Service. This Ash Wednesday, a special collection will be taken up for Catholic Charities of Boston. Catholic Charities works to serve more than 185,000 families and individuals throughout the Archdiocese and help put them on a path to self-sustainability. Programs including food and utility assistance, adult education, temporary and transitional housing, at-risk youth development, child care, and refugee and immigration services provides support to individuals for their most basic needs while charting a path to a living wage. Thank you in advance for your generosity. For more information, please visit www.ccab.org.

Over the past few weeks, many of you received a letter from Cardinal Seán requesting your support of the 2019 Catholic Appeal. Supporting the Catholic Appeal is the most effective way to carry out the work of the Church, both within and beyond parish boundaries. Our parishes directly benefit from the ministries supported by the Appeal and your gift will help us reach our 2019 goals. If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider making an early pledge. You may mail your pledge or visit www.bostoncatholicappeal.org to give online. You may also give by taking one of the Envelopes found in your Pew. Thank you!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! IT IS CONCERNING THE CATHOLIC APPEAL. In years past, every parish that exceeded their assessment and financial goals received a refund check back to the Parish. Both of our Parishes have received refunds consistently for many years. Last year, the rules changed. The Archdiocese’s new rule is that in order to receive any refund money back to the Parish, the Parish must ex-ceed the “In-Pew” assessment. What does that mean? The Envelopes found in your pew need to be filled out by every family and returned this week. I am asking that every family - especially those that HAVE ALREADY GIVEN to the Catholic Appeal - to take one of the Envelopes and fill in the highlighted sections by writing your Name, Parish, and Town, and check off “I have already given to the Catholic Appeal this year” and return it as soon as possible. For those giving for the first time, please fill out the entire envelope including your address and contact information. If we all do this together, both Parishes will receive refund checks this coming year. Because of you cooperaton last year, both parishes DID receive refunds last year. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Lets do it again! On a side note: Take a look at this year’s video on the Catholic Appeal Web site or on our LOCCC.ORG Web Site – Truth-fully, it is an Excellent Video showing what the Catholic Appeal does for us in the Archdiocese of Boston
