OO F ALIVE C Summer Faith Program for Middle Schoolers - During the month of July one-hundred-three Middle schoolers par cipated in this year’s Summer Faith Program. Addressing today’s health and safety concerns and at the same me con nuing to engage students in growing their faith was indeed an exercise in thinking outside the box! But with God’s strength and love guiding and with the commitment of all those involved - we carried onward! We are thankful for having had the opportunity to share with the students and their families the beauty of our Catholic Faith.

Over the course of three weeks, a small group of 6 to 8 students met on campus at either St. Athanasius or St. Agnes: each day saw a di erent group of students. In addi on to the small group mee ng, all students had the opportunity to par cipate in a grade level “Zoom Party”, Monday through Friday, sharing faith and having fun. Ac vi es for the home o ered opportuni es for the en re family to be engaged. A very special blessing for the week was the celebra on of Daily Mass on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, in communion with our larger faith community!

With deep apprecia on for the high school catechists for sharing their me and their faith - you are wonderful role models: Mia Pantano, Ryan Cayton, Ava Carlson, Sophie Grimm, Ally Tesoro, Caroline Hugo

Thank you to the teens who worked “behind-the-scenes” to provide nutri onal support: Sally Cashin, Catherine Connolly, Ashley Ockerbloom

Thank you to Tom Jones and Steve Flannery who ensured that our students had a clean, safe and comfortable environment; and many thanks to our Reading Catholic Community clergy, Fr Steve, Fr Victor, Fr Ed, Fr Rich, Deacon Neil, Deacon Bill.

We are . . . . . . in the Sacraments

. . . in our Community

She is no longer responsible for the fundraising she was originally bound to so, in an e ort to help Share God’s Love and Light with as many people as possible, Chrissy has decided to run the marathon virtually to support our Reading Catholic Community. Marathoners are required to complete the 26.2 mile distance and provide proof of ming to the Boston Athle c Associa on.

Chrissy’s run will begin on September 11, 2020, at St. Agnes Church at 9:30AM (following the 9AM Daily Mass) and end at St. Athanasius Church. This route will also allow parishioners to bike along, run socially distant for parts of it, drive along, make and hold signs of support, and safely provide water/Gatorade (with masks and gloved hands) at three loca ons around the lake.

T C A - While many aspects of our life have come to a

stands ll, the work of our ministries con nues as we strive to meet the needs of those who are relying on our guidance and assistance. The sick and homebound con nue to receive spiritual support and informa on over the phone from the Archdiocese’s Faith Community Nurses and Chaplains program. Our Pregnancy Help Centers con nue to provide resources for women facing crisis pregnancies. Those su ering from addic on s ll need support and guidance and many have greater need for counseling and spiritual support during this me of heightened anxiety.

Your support of the Catholic Appeal ensures that these programs and services con nue. With the knowledge that many of you are also facing challenging nancial reali es, and with concern for the people we serve, we hope that you will prayerfully consider making your gi to the 2020 Catholic Appeal in one of the following ways: if you receive a le er or email, respond using the pledge card or dona on op ons; Visit bostoncatholicappeal.org to give online; return the envelope found at the churches’ entrances - RETURN TO THE CHURCH - DO NOT MAIL

KK O P O Did you know that a key component to keeping our churches’ doors open is the care we have taken following each Mass, to ensure that the pews/common areas are sani zed?

We are commi ed to upholding the safety measures required for our parishes to remain open.

If you are a ending Mass in person, we ask that a few (perhaps 5 to 6 ) parishioners stop in at the Sacristy following Mass to volunteer to help sani ze the pews.

With a handful of persons helping, the task goes quickly and adds no more than 30 minutes more to your me at church.

The Men’s Group meets on Saturday mornings, via Zoom at 7:00AM. Please call the Parish O ce if you would like more informa on on this group.

F P : S B H The decision to sell the rectory on Bainbridge Street was not quickly taken. As I understand it about 25 years ago Fr. Frank moved from the rectory, now the current parish o ces, to the house on Bainbridge Street. Previous to that, a religious sister, Pastoral Associate, lived there. The idea to sell the house came up almost two years ago when Fr. Darin became the Pastor for the Methuen Collabora ve and I became Administrator and then Pastor of the Reading Collabora ve. The reason for Collabora ves being set up in the Archdiocese is the lack of priests and Cardinal O’Malley’s desire not to close parishes. Since the rectory at St. Agnes is larger, the priests are living there. As there was so much change two years ago none of us wanted to tackle the issue with the house on Bainbridge Street beyond talking with a real estate agent about the possibili es: no decisions were made at that me. It is obvious that it is not good for a house to remain unoccupied and as we began a conversa on about this, Fr. Erikson arrived and solved the “temporary” problem.

The nancial picture of the parish has not been good for a couple of years and the COVID shutdown has only made ma ers worse. A few months ago the Finance Council met with a representa ve of the Archdiocese to discuss our op ons with regard to the Bainbridge house. As you can imagine it was a very lively mee ng. We then had a joint mee ng with the Finance & Parish Councils and the decision was made to sell the house. We also felt it necessary to send a Financial Report to parishioners and ask for comments on the possible sale. There have been two responses: one to sell; and a “group le er” not to sell. It has been a very di cult decision to make but considering the very ac ve real estate market it is best for the nancial stability of St. Athanasius Parish to proceed with the sale of the Bainbridge house.

As tough as this is, the good news is that Fr. Erikson will be moving to the Parish O ces’ loca on only a few feet away.

God bless,

Fr. Steve Rock
