FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dear Light of Christ Catholic Collaborative, Jesus Christ is Risen, Alleluia!!! Alleluia!!! We are in our final week of Easter. Today’s Gospel is the climax of Jesus’ last discourse. This chapter has been called the “high priestly prayer” of Jesus. He speaks as intercessor, with words addressed directly to the Father and not to the disciples, who only overhear. The prayer is one of petition, for immediate and future disciples. At the end of this prayer, Jesus and his disciples depart for the garden, and Jesus is arrested. Reading this prayer of Jesus during the Easter Season, through the lens of his Resurrection, we know that the light of Christ has overcome the darkness of sin and death in our world. In the opening line of this prayer, we hear Jesus pray that his disciples will be kept in the name that he was given by God. We know that the salvation is given to us in the name of Jesus, and that his name—“God saves”—announces his mission on our behalf. Our prayerful best wishes to Deacon Shannon Thurman who will be Ordained a Priest next Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver Colorado by His Excellency, Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila. Deacon Shannon asked me to offer his Thanks for the reception given to him last weekend at St. Bridget Parish Hall. He was very humbled by all who came to wish him well. Archbishop Aquila has assigned Father Shannon to the “Northwest Tri-Parish.” The parish website is: nwtriparish.com For those wishing to contact Fr. Shannon, his mailing address will be: St. Michael Parish, 678 School Street, Craig, CO 81625. Fr. Shannon left us some Prayer Cards from his Ordination. They can be found at the front doors of our two Churches. Please take one and offer prayers for his new priestly ministry. Pope St. John XXIII Seminary has contacted us about hosting another Deacon Intern for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. They are assigning Kenneth Grooms to us beginning in September. Ken Grooms converted to Catholicism while a student at the University of South Carolina in 1987 the same year that Pope John Paul II visited the school. In 1989 he moved to New York to study at Fordham University and worked as a volunteer for the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Theresa of Calcutta’s Sisters). Ken has been a full-time caregiver for a family on Long Island, a cook for retired priests, and a dietary aide at a hospital. “After my conversion, I contemplated a vocation, but it wasn’t until years later, after spending a year as a Trappist monk, that I felt the clarity of a call to the diocesan priesthood.” Ken is studying for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, NY. He came a couple of weeks ago for a quick visit and dinner with the priests. He has a gentle soul, you will like him very much. We are looking forward to his arrival in September.
Attention all High School boys: The Vocation Office invites you to a St. Andrew’s Dinner. What is that??? It is an evening of prayer, food, and conversation. Following Evening Prayer and dinner, you will be welcomed to a casual discussion with Cardinal Seán about vocations, prayer, and the call to holiness that God places on each of our hearts. Each young man will have the chance to meet Cardinal Seán. Please contact me directly to attend this dinner. We have three young men already signed up. The date of the St. Andrew’s Dinner is Thursday, May 24. It will take place at St. Edith Stein Parish in Brockton from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Happy Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. In America, Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 to honor her own mother and all mothers because she believed that they were "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". It became an official U.S. holiday in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. The Church offers a Blessing for all Mothers: Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Happy Mother’s Day! Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney
Congratulations Drew Sullivan, James Kohler and Noah Stothers will be receiving the Catholic Religious Medal, Ad Altare Dei (to the altar of God) at the Annual Awards Mass on May 20th at Our Lady of the Christians in Newton, MA. There are Boy Scouts with the Troop 22 of Whitman. Let us congratulate them and pray for them as they receive these awards.
