Well, they did it again. Just as we were going to print the Trojans won their fifth grand final in a row, which means that all five grades were winners this year. Such a great result for everyone involved.

There was so much going on around town this month, with several great charity projects including Trent Chapman’s amazing walk from Brisbane to Sydney raising money for Parkinsons disease. He really is inspirational, and we understand he has made a big impact on many individual lives, as well as helping Parkinsons research.

We welcomed the new Chamber of Commerce too, and said goodbye to Louise Owen after her five years as president.

In early October we will welcome home Jacqueline Freney, our Paralympic star who won a record eight gold medals at this year’s games.

sCOUT nEws1st Lennox Head Scout Group has

been busy raising funds to help send our Scouts to the next Jamboree to be held in Maryborough Qld early in 2012. We wish to thank the commu-nity for their support and hope that it will continue in the future.

The Scouts have been busy over the last few weeks, firstly with a Troop camp at Potter’s Farm in Bangalow to hone their skills in preparation for the Jamboree and secondly helping out with fundraising for the Westpac He-licopter Service. The Scouts spent four hours on a Saturday morning collect-ing money. We would like to thank

FUnDRAIsER FOR THE PEnDER FAmILY

Donations of clothes and other goods are required for a fundraising garage sale on the 10th of November at 27 Byron Street, Lennox Head. The aim is to raise funds for the Pender family (Lee, Kim and daughter Hay-ley, who is 11).

Lee & Kim have been local busi-ness owners for the past 30 years. With Ballina Ocean Tours, they gave locals the opportunity to whale-watch and experience our beautiful coast-line. They now own Summit Signs. However, Lee has been battling with a cancerous tumour on his neck & face for the past couple of years, and has been hospitalized and unable to work for nearly a year. Kim has also been battling health issues. The fam-ily have been struggling to keep their business running and are feeling the financial strain. In these tough times, most people are lucky enough to have their health; those that don’t will understand what a strain it can be on a family.

Lee & Kim are incredibly generous individuals, and even through these tough times Kim has still maintained her commitments as a girl-guide lead-

er in Ballina. The Pender family would be the first to help out others in need, so please look hard to see if you have anything to donate. You can drop-off goods to the following locations on 7th, 8th & 9th of November;-

Donation drop-off points: 27 Byron St (Lennox Head), Summit Signs (256 River St, Ballina)

Local businesses have already been very generous with donations, so it is looking like it will be a fun day with a sausage sizzle and lots of things to spend your money on!

Your support is greatly appreciated

the residents of Lennox for their gen-erous donations on the day. This was a great opportunity for our Scouts to get involved in their local community. We have welcomed a new family into our Group with Hayden being invest-ed into the Troop last month and the possibility of another new member in the coming weeks. Our Scout Troop is slowly growing but we still have room for more!! Call Jenny on 66 872 047.

Does your group need a place to meet/run a class? Did you know that the Scout Hall can be hired at reason-able rates? Contact Lee on 6687 5561.

Now that it looks as if the Pacific Pines development is to be taken over by Lend Lease commencing next year Council will need to imple-ment the roading infrastructure. Most importantly Hutley Drive needs to be connected at both ends to take the additionlal traffic so that Montwood Drive will not be over-burdened with a continuous stream of traffic.Plans were in place when Petrac were the owners so no doubt these are still relevant and will hasten commence-ment date.

The Meet the Candidates night host-ed by the Residents’ Assoc and Cham-ber of Commerce was a great success, in fact the best attended in the Shire with over 100 taking the opportunity to “check out” the candidates before

voting day.The original intention was to hold it in the Community Cen-tre, which we thought would be the appropriate place, however we also thought that would be freely given but were informed that there would be a charge. After discussion we chose to use the Angican Church who kindly donated the use for a commu-nity event.

The Pat Morton pathway has been completed and now you can walk from Lions’ Park at the boat chan-nel all the way to the lookout. Still no sign of toilets being constructed but this is on the agenda. You may also notice that the ground has been flattened and turfed opposite Byron Street as this is the area where the Lennox Park on the foreshore is to be constructed. Plans were on the fence which has been removed but will be

available when the D.A. is published. Those who are interested will be able to access the plans and make com-ments.

The detioration behind Williams Reserve because of unauthorised traf-fic was brought to our attention and so an inspection with Council was carried out. Now access will only be for those who are authorised to take vehicles into this area. This is one of the few sites of Coastal Cypress pine and we should be doing all we can preserve it in it’s near natural site.

The prices of our Heritage Com-mittee books have been reduced and are on sale at Lennox Post Office, Bookmark in Ballina Street and at the Ballina Information Centre so now is the time to purchase them and learn about the heritage of your village.

Christine went above and beyond to make the day a huge success. Donations were made by all for the chance to win a raffle. A huge thank you to Bare feet in Len-nox for donating the prizes. The day couldn’t have been a success without the help of Angel from Choux Choux Patteserie in Bangalow for donating delicious cakes for morning tea. All that came enjoyed the morning tea and an amazing $265 was raised for the cancer council. Great work Chris-tine, everyone involved and the team at Fitness Matters Lennox Head. If

On the day that she heard that one of her major sponsors for the Sample food festival had pulled out, Remy Tancred ran into Dean Power (pic-tured) from Community Engine. He spoke to his colleagues at Community Engine who then offered the sponsor-ship money she needed to fill the gap.

‘They came to the rescue with a few thousand dollars,’ said Ms Tancred. ‘They certainly put the capital ‘C’ back into community, they’ve really shown incredible community spirit and helped get the festival out of a bit of a tight spot. We’re very grateful,’ she said.

These two Scotsmen from Lennox Head were snapped on the 23rd August celebrating the great Scottish hero and patriot William Wallace. Throughout the centuries the name William Wallace is one which has been renowned for his desire for freedom for his homeland. Wallace was a big man, nearly seven feet tall, very muscular, (just like some of the bowlers at Lennox Head) and perfectly built for the numerous battles he fought from Scotland against the English. Unfortunately, Wallace was eventu-ally betrayed, captured, and taken to London, where he was handed over to his enemies.....hung, drawn and quartered, they took his life, but not his FREEDOM.....ie Braveheart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two ‘handsome Scotties’ are Robert Reid and Gra-ham Houston.

According to incoming President Paul Button, the new committee welcomes feedback from the business com-munity.

‘The view is that we would like to hear from local busi-nesses (whether they be in the main street or from home) what they’d like from their Chamber. A more cohesive business community, more networking opportunities, business support, business workshops are a few possibili-ties – we’re sure there are more.’

‘We are developing a short survey which we hope all businesses will complete in order to give us their feed-back. We would like every business in Lennox to take part in the survey, but we realise that our list of businesses is not exhaustive, we want to reach out to all home-based and professional businesses that are perhaps less visible than the ‘shop-front’ retail and hospitality businesses.

‘As we all know, Lennox Head is unique. It has a natural beauty which we all need to preserve. We believe that to-gether we can maintain a vibrant, healthy community in a beautifully designed village environment,’ he said.

by Kate LamontRecent important landcare work was

carried out by women in the group - in an area close to Pat Morton Lookout they had to weed out very entrenched, thick net like coverings of passion vine that had all but smothered two beautiful native trees close to the coast road. I’d like to introduce you to Sue Williams, Shaun Eastment and Jen Oakwood.

Sue was brought up on the Morning-ton Penninsular. Her very early interest in plant life was encouraged by her mother who Sue recalls helped her with a school project which involved collecting native plant specimens and applying the correct scientific name to each specimen. This experience lay the groundwork for what was to become her passion in adult life. In later life she and her husband Ian moved to Lennox Head. The property they own here is classified as High Conservation Value. A Nature Conservation Agree-ment with the Native trust of NSW has resulted in professional bush regen-erators coming to the property and instructing them in bush regeneration

methods and weed eradication meth-ods. This knowledge is happily passed on to Landcare.

Shaun Eastment has been active in Lennox Head Landcare for the last four years. As soon as Shaun cleared her desk for the last time (a science teacher) she took to the bush - her first love - and to landcare - as a way of re-establishing her centredness and sense of peace that comes with being in na-ture. Shaun’s scientific background and analytical mind has helped with plant and weed identification and treatment - which she then passes on to the less scientific of the landcare workers - me for instance!

Jen Oakwood spent much of her life in England bringing up a family and teaching. She returned to Australia in 2011. The beauty of Lennox Head soon rekindled her love for the Australian bush and now as a woman in her 70’s she looks forward to her Wednesday mornings working with the landcare crew. (Age is no barrier!)

For Sue, Shaun and Jen and for all the landcare workers, each Wednesday is important not only for the regenera-tion and protection of the native envi-ronment, but also as a very enjoyable few hours shared with like minded people surrounded by the trees, shrubs and animals of the Australian bush.

Lisa and Tony Bundock have set the bar high by serving delicious, interesting food,

in a casual, friendly atmosphere that combines beach shack with casual class.

So diners are particularly excited at the arrival of new chef Dennis Baker, whose new take on some old favourites is delivered with uncompromising artistry.

Like so many great chefs, Dennis knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a chef, and he set about achieving that, winning a TAFE prze in Tasmania that put him on the radar at Tetsuya’s in Sydney.

From there he spent two years working at Tetsuya’s before heading off overseas to work in two amazing London restaurants.

Drop in and taste his creations.

Those who have seen Trent Chap-man’s feet after three long weeks walking from Brisbane to Sydney, know what kind of hardship he is putting himself through. These puffy, blistered hoofs are the only things Trent can use to complete his fund-raising walk, even though he must have been tempted more than once to stick his finger out and hitch a lift.

As we went to print, Trent had com-pleted his third week of the four week trek, and he is due to arrive in Sydney the week this magazine is distributed.

Raising money for Parkinsons and Depression, Trent is inspired by his own grandmother who suffers both of these debilitating illnesses. He is walking all the way with a brush-cut-ter on his back, a heavy, inconvenient burden that is designed to in some way replicate the discomfort that people with Parkinsons feel every day.

With sponsorship from Tanaka

InsPIRATIOn On TwO (vERY TIRED) LEGs Power Equipment, Trent is brushcut-

ting the 900+ kilometres, flanked by his loyal support team who are responsible for organising accom-modation, food and foot bandages at every stop.

He has been receiving a hero’s welcome in many towns including his old home town Lennox Head where Primary School students gave him a rousing cheer.

According to Trent, the challenge is a mental one, not a physical one.

Anyone who would like to support him can do so by visiting this website: http://goo.gl/vsSL1

Cancer in petsUnfortunately, one of the most

common reasons pets are presented to vets for examination are symptoms or signs relating to tumours or cancer of one form or another. The general term for growths, lumps, bumps and disorders like these is “Neoplasia.” Neoplasia can be benign (it doesn’t spread to other sites on the body) or malignant (it does spread.) Benign lesions can be small or very large, they can be dormant or aggressive and destructive. Malignancies can be very aggressive and spread rapidly to other organs, or can be slow growing and less likely to spread to other sites early on in the disease.

There are many, many different types of neoplasia. Each type of lesion can have different manifesta-tions and behaviour, hence different types of treatment. For instance, the canine “Mast Cell Tumour” is one of the most common skin tumours of

dogs. It can be graded into 3 stages, and each stage is further subdivided. Depending on the staging, treatment may involve surgery only or it may involve surgery, scans and ongoing chemotheraphy over several months.

Another common neoplastic condi-tion is “Squamous Cell Carcinoma” in the skin of white cats. These can-cers are malignant, but in early stages rarely spread elsewhere. Treating early S.C.C’s may be as simple as freezing them off.

As always, early detection and treat-ment most often leads to a cure, or at least a chance for a longer, happier life. Your vet will sometimes be able to tell you what you’re dealing with on the first visit. However, most often a sample of the growth, or some other tests will need to be examined for ac-curate diagnosis. The various options available for diagnosis and treat-ment for each individual can then be discussed to help you make the best decision for your pet and for you.

Bye now! Evan (Lennox Head Vet Clinic)

mEssY OR TIDY CHURCH? By Jan Fryer

That is the Question! (Apologies to Shakespeare)While many churches are facing dwindling numbers at

Sunday Services, others are looking at fresh expressions of worship and Messy Church is one such expression. For some from the traditional mindset this ‘messy’ concept is difficult to swallow, but it has become an increasingly pop-ular form of worship in many churches across the world.

On Saturday 25th August over 70 people from various Christian denominations on the Far North Coast gathered at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Ballina to hear Workshop Leader and foundation member of Messy Church, Lucy Moore, inform and entertain them on how they too can become messy!

Lucy who is from the UK led the group through the basics of starting a Messy Church Service. Across the world many denominations have been experimenting with the messy church concept. Alstonville Parish have been holding Messy Church this year and have around 80 - 85 people regularly attending. Members of Sherwood, in Brisbane also ventured down to this workshop as they have been holding ‘Messy Church’ for over three years.

Messy Church is like a ‘Kid’s Club’, where adults at-tend too. Kid’s Club involves being welcomed by the

Olivia and Ernie Guy took over the lease of the Chinese Restaurant last year and have worked hard to build it into a popular local hang which they have called The Spotted Frog.

Says Olivia, ‘It’s taken time, but we’re getting there,’ and as she speaks a steady lunch crowd begins to wander in.

Olivia is from New Zealand, but has spent many years moving between the two countries and between places within Australia.

‘We started with Melbourne, then we spent some time in the Gold Coast, then Ballina and now we’re here in Lennox,’ she says.

She is a trained chef (and so is her husband Ernie), and grew up working in her parents’ fish and chip shop in NZ, learning to scale and fillet fish, and to fry chips.

‘I’ve worked in juice bars and cafes and I’ve done stints in Chinese restaurants too,’ she says, ‘and so at The Spot-ted Frog we’ve developed a varied cafe menu with an Asian influence.’

The couple have two boys, Harrison(4) and Jett (20 months) and Olivia spends plenty of time juggling busi-ness and family.

In her spare time (if she has any!) she is a keen crafter who makes all sorts of bits and bobs ranging from cards to santa sacks (which are the current project).

‘I actually always thought that I would get into textiles or fashion design when I left school, but my careers ad-viser told me that I wouldn’t make any money, so I chose hospitality. I suppose she was right too, but I still love sewing and stitching and sticking things together, and maybe one day I’ll be able to do more.’

In the meantime she loves the work at the cafe, meet-ing ‘so many different people, who have really taken me under their wing. They look out for our kids, and treat us like family. It is wonderful,’ she says.

Chosen from more than 200 franchises nationwide, Aus-tralia’s best carpet cleaners are locals John and Teresa Pea-

cock from Chem-Dry Far North Coast/ NSW. The award ceremony took place last month at Chem-Dry Australia’s national convention at Hotel Novotel in Cairns.

‘This fantastic accolade took us completely by surprise’ John said. ‘With so many other talented franchisees in the network, we didn’t think we’d be nominated’. His wife and co-worker Teresa agrees, ‘We just stared at each other when our name was called out. But it’s truly a wonderful feeling to be recognised and know that your work is being appreciated’.

Australian Franchise of the Year is Chem-Dry’s most prestigious prize but the business is not new to prizes and awards. John and Teresa won Lennox Head Chamber of Commerce’s prize for Trade in 2010 and Home Based Business 2011. Chem-Dry Australia nominated them for Restorer of the Year 2010 for their fire and flood restora-tion work, notably the Casino storm -09, the Northern Rivers flood -09 and the Lennox Head tornado -10.

Providing non-toxic and quick-drying carpet and upholstery cleans since 2008, the Peacocks are now get-ting ready for their high season. ‘Splendour in the Grass usually means a wake up from the winter slumber for our local customers,’ Teresa said. ‘This year we spent three days after the festival cleaning nothing but muddy carpets’, John added.

EAT LOCAL FEED GLOBAL AT 7 mILE

On Sunday 14th October 7 Mile Restaurant will mark World Food Day by joining with Oxfam in a fundraising lunch.

They are offering a 3 course lunch, including amuse bouche, palette cleanser, and a glass of red or white wine, all for $50 per head.

Of that, $5 will go directly to Oxfam and then, on top of that, 5% of the total day’s takings will also go to Ox-fam. So it’s a very worthy cause, and a very yummy meal. Acording to 7 Mile’s Lisa Bundock, the idea came to them through one of their regular customers. Thanks Susanna.

Sam Schott, BuilderStar sign: GeminiBirthplace: Byron BayFamily: sisters Monique and Melissa, and girlfriend LisaFavourite food: ThaiFavourite film: Saving Private Ryan

It’s not that often you meet a genuine local like Sam Schott, who was born in Byron Bay, attended the local schools and grew up surfing the local breaks.

These days Sam calls himself a Lennox lad, and lives in town in a house that he built himself. Actually, the build was technically a renovation, because Sam very cleverly

kept three walls of the original house that was on the site, and added the rest of the building around them. Now you can’t find any signs of that original shack anywhere, and instead what you see is a large, two storey, contemporary four bedroom, two bathroom, one study house, with high ceilings and special features.

So good is this ‘renovation’ that Sam won an award at the recent Master Builders Awards, where he was pre-sented with a Merit Award for Best Renovation Under $300,000. He is a talented designer, who drew up much of the layout of the new house himself. He also saved tens of thousands of dollars on the project by buying second hand wooden doors and windows on Ebay - reducing what could have been up to a $90,000 cost to around $7,000.

‘I bought the double-hung sash windows first and I basically designed the house around that,’ he says.

Sam saved hard so that he could afford the project, and he now helps pay the mortgage by turning his house into a share house and renting rooms out to mates.

He already employs a couple of tradesmen and has ambitions to expand his business in the future, hoping to work on the high-end special projects, that involve beautiful architectural design and construction of differ-ent interesting houses.

Open 7 Days: 11.30-3pm & 5-7.30pm

Our school captains and prefects for 2013 have been elected. We congratulate Bethany Weaver, Aleesha Cockfield, Nathan Hodge and Keegan Haugh on their election to the positions. Southern Cross K-12 thanks all those students who nominated for the leadership roles: Angalee Narayan-Gray, Amelia Perris, David Smith, Olivia Oaten, Jackson Ludecke, Dakota Dixon and Justin Keith.

Thanks also to our outgoing captains, Lachlan Jones, Fraser Jones, Gabrielle Alford and Caitlin Brogan.

“All Creatures, Great and Small” was the theme of the K-2 performance evening recently. Pictured are some of the wonderful acts which took place on the night.

Student in the Support Classes have been working hard in their garden, planting vegetables and herbs, adding a worm farm and a handsome scarecrow. Students in LS1 have been using the produce in their cooking. They have also planted plants to attract butterflies and are propagating seedlings to sell. Pictured with “Bruce” the scarecrow are Jade, Daniel, Liam, Ryan and Kieran.

The Year 8 Informant Group has produced its first edition of The Ozone newsletter. This collaborative group promotes the school’s key values of Respect, Responsibility and Excellence with an environmental focus. They will also be creating a blog. You can access The Ozone through the school website: http://www.sthcross-c.schools.nsw.edu.au/

The school’s choir performed at the Ballina Council Chambers recently. Councillors gave a standing ovation. The group is now working on a repertoire of songs from the 60s to 2012.

Bianca Wilson has been to Sydney to perform at the State Dance Festival.

Last week three Southern Cross students travelled to Sydney to represent the school at the NSWCHS Athletic championships.

Cori Hardy competed in two events, the hurdles and the 1500m walk. She placed a very creditable 11th in the hurdles and 9th in the walk. Keira Chapman gained a 10th place in the high jump while Daniel Serone came in 8th in the shot put.

These results are admirable and congratulations must go to Cori, Keira and Daniel for flying the Southern Cross flag with distinction.

Children have begun formal tran-sition to school program. To sup-port this at preschool, alongside our ‘reader’ program with the year 5 and 6 children, we have been using the primary school tables to have a ‘big school’ lunch. Mrs Nowlan has come to say hello to the children at our lunch time and the children are eager to continue to do this.

A reminder about the Lennox Primary School Fair, the preschool will be attending again this year with Old MacDonalds Farm, Face Painting, Plaster Painting and Painting.

Preschool Enrolments for 2013 are in the process and we look forward to meeting our new families on the orientation evening (7th November at 7pm) and Orientation days (Monday 5th-Friday 9th for 15 minutes be-tween 9-10am and 11.45-12.45pm).

The children have been creating their own puppets and performing shows in the lead up to having a

The Lennox Head Netball Club had a very successful 2012 season.

Lennox Head Netball club has 14 teams playing from 7 years to seniors. 11 of our teams play in divisions which are competitive.

The club was represented in all six grades on grand final day held on Sat-urday 15th September at the Ballina Netball Courts. This was an amazing effort for our teams to achieve this.

All our teams put in an incredible effort during their grand final games with our 10 years Tadpoles, Cadet A Jellyfish and Senior Twisters all fin-ishing as runners up, and our 11 years Butterflies, 12 years Treasures and Cadet B Seashells all winning their divisions.

We would like to congratulate all our members on your commitment this season and we look forward to seeing you all again next year with some new players as well.

sportLE-BA DOnATInG TO LOCAL CHARITIEs

After hosting the successful inaugural Skullcandy Oz Grom Open surfing event in July, the Lennox Head Balli-na Boardriders’ Club (Le-Ba) last month distributed some of the money it raised during the event to local charities.

Le-Ba spokesman, Tony O’Brien, presented the Lennox Head Public School P&C with a cheque to help provide extra support and resources for students.

“The Skullcandy Oz Grom Open was a huge success that brought hundreds of visitors to Lennox Head at a traditionally quiet time of the year and its right we should give something back to the community,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The streets of Lennox Head were teeming with young surfers and their families and businesses in town were busy during the contest,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The Le-Ba Boardriders Club is a non-profit, commu-nity-based group and we wanted to share some of the proceeds with charities and local organisations that do a great job in our town” Mr O’Brien said.

In 2012 Le-Ba has decided to make donations to Lennox Head P& C, Lennox Head SLSC, St Johns and the Cystic Fybrosis Foundation.

‘Plans are underway for the 2013 Oz Grom Open, and we encourage any young children who have a interest in surfing to join Little Le-Ba – our junior boardriding club,’ Mr O’Brien said.
