From the PublisherAs I make the final preparations

for the magazine to go to print, we are experiencing extreme weather conditions that are forecast to worsen. I hope we all come out of this safe and sound

It's been a big month for The Lennox Wave. Now that Remy has handed over to me, my task has been to get really organised and learn the whole business. Thanks so much to everyone for so many kind words of encouragement and support.

Please take the time to read our feature on page 10 about Clyde Campbell, whose campaign to find a cure for Parkinson's is inspiring.

There's a lot more in this issue, in fact it is jam packed with all sorts of news and community notices. I don't know if Lennox Head is unusual, but it never ceases to amaze me just how much is always going on here.

I will be at the Lennox Market on Feb 10 with magazines and an offer to sign up to Wave Weekly.

Hope to see you there. Helen Fry

save the Lennox Bowloa poem by Deb Bowden

The village needs its bowlo back, its really such a shamethe people of our beachside town are really not the same.it was a special place, the friendly social hubso help support our bowlo to open up our club.A Friday, weekend raffle or a weekly bingo callI know some senior citizens who frequented them all.For these local people, their lives a little lostso help support the bowlo, closure came at such a cost.A place of many characters, we had them all right thereregular table gatherings, one even had his own chair. So help support the bowlo it really was a sinthe heart of the community, sporting groups within.Every month the Monday ladies with their Viewhad to find another place, a group of just a few.Saturday arvo punters, the bowlo was the placecheering horses on with mates in every single race.So help support the bowlo, it really is a shameeven just to socialise or watch a footy game. Our annual tourist crew, they’ve been hit as wellthey love their Lennox bowlo for a holiday spell.Even loss of loved ones, the bowlo played a partgrieving friends and family could lighten up their heart. So help support our bowlo don’t take us off the mapthe closing of our bowlo has left a massive gap.Santa used to turn up and leave a raffle stockinga year without club presents, for children very shocking.November Melbourne Cup day all ladies in their blingfashions flood the dining room, a band would often sing. The closing of this landmark has hit the town so badso help support our bowlo, remember what we had.Lets see the doors re-open, bring the club to graceto keep the friendship solid and wear a happy face.So thanks to all the members supporting it for yearslets reclaim our bowlo and dry up all those tears. So help support our bowlo it really is our plightwe wont give up so easy we’ll stay in there and fight.

The Committee’s work was perhaps made a little more complex with the news of the resignation of the entire Ramsgate Board late last year, but according to ex Board Director and Lennox Head resident Geoff Brook, ‘This was in no way related to what has been going on in Lennox Head.’

The Committee are calling their fundraising campaign ‘Reaching for the Stars’ and members of the Lennox Head community can expect to receive an invitation from them in the very near future. They already have several plans for events including dinner dance and music under the stars, so get ready to dig deep for a good cause.

sAvE thE BowLo continued from page 1Optus has already

had its way with the installation of a mobile phone tower on the water tank in Basalt Court. Now it looks like it will be granted a lease.

According to Council the land is

classified as 'Community Land' but residents who are contesting the tower's installation claim, 'Community land, as defined by the Local Government Act 2000 is land managed or owned by Council for the enjoyment or benefit of the community.'

This classification protects the interests of the community in the land for current and future generations.

Community land is intended to be used by the public. Community land may be used by sporting groups or non-profit organisations, for the benefit of the community. Since August/September 2011 the Basalt Court water reservoir site has had 7 Optus antennas and one air conditioning shed operating 24 hours a day. These are not community facilities.'

Submissions closed on 31 January.

The message from our local police to the Lennox Head community is ‘Thanks’.

Thanks for your assistance in solving a number of recent crimes, including a holdup at the Lennox Hotel, where customers apprehended the offender, held onto him until police arrived, and then continued to assist police with their investigation.

According to Detective Sargent Mick Smith, ‘This kind of positive involvement by the community is greatly appreciated by the police.’

‘We also solved several recent break-ins in the main street, thanks to information from the public,’ he says.

Now this new team of detectives at Ballina Police Station are asking the community to keep it up.

‘We basically want the public to know that we are approachable, and available any time to chat with them about any information they may have, and that they can remain completely anonymous in this process,’ he says.

Detective Sargent Smith has been working in the police force in the area for 23 years and is the team leader of a group of four detectives at the Ballina Police Station.

He says he never even thought about doing anything else except becoming a policeman – his father Barry was a police officer, and so is his brother. And just to keep it all in the family, his sister married one!

The rest of the team are relatively new to the area, and all keen to establish positive ongoing relationships with the public. Three of the four live in Lennox Head, and all have strong connections with the Lennox Community.

The new officers are Detective Senior Constable Andrew Fraser who moved from the Newcastle area six months ago, Detective Senior Constable Lauren Paff who recently transferred from Bourke and Ben Dixon who has been stationed in the area for a few years but recently transferred to Detectives.

The team investigates serious crimes including drug cultivation and dealing, homicide, sexual assault, break and enters and fraud. In fact, they were instrumental in the arrest of a murderer in Broadwater recently.

‘This was a classic example of our local knowledge being invaluable in an ongoing murder investigation led by a strike force from Sydney,’ DS Smith says.

The team also has a lot to do with drug crimes in the local area, and are keen to stress that although cannabis has always had a reputation for being a ‘soft’ drug, in these days of hydroponics, cannabis cultivation is no longer necessarily a harmless or victimless crime.

But at the core of their message for 2013 and beyond is breaking down the barriers between the public and police, and keeping our crime rates at the lowest they have been in some years.

LEnnoX LIons cLUBHullo everyone. We at Lennox Head Lions hope you

all had a great Xmas as we all did and we are now back in business facing what is going to be a very busy year. By the time you read this we will have held our annual Australia Day BBQ and will be preparing to meet our associate clubs once again to plan our 2013 activities.

So this issue I just wish to bring our first important function to your attention - the Youth of the Year Quest. I have asked Lion Don, who is the organiser for this event, to give you a bit of an idea as to what is involved:

“Lennox Lions Youth of the Year Quest is about to get underway again. The quest has three components: entrants submit a Supporting Statement, participate in a half hour interview with the judges and then contest the Public Speaking final.

This has both an impromptu and a prepared component. It is great to see just how inspiring our best young people are and to set this off against the unfortunate incidents that get so much media attention.

Our club final is at the Anglican Church at 6.30pm on Wednesday February 20th This year, our club will also be hosting the Zone Final which will be at 2.00pm on Saturday March 2 at the same venue.

We extend a warm welcome to the public to attend and can guarantee that you will be impressed, particularly at this level where all candidates will be students who have already won their Club Final.

We would also like to thank the NAB bank who are once again the major sponsors nationwide.”

I too would urge you come along and see these young people in action. Each year they have been just amazing!

We all look forward to your ongoing support throughout this year as has always been the case in this great little community.

In August 2012 Ballina Parish welcomed Lucy Moore, founder of Messy Church, from the UK to the Diocese. Our Parish hosted her to conduct Messy Church Training.

The Parish of Ballina started our Messy Church experience with our Messy Christmas service on Christmas Eve at St Mary’s at 5.30pm.

This service was attended by approximately 120 people, and was an evening of activities which reminded us of the story of Christmas, including making “edible babies in mangers”, “play dough nativities”, and even “edible donkey dung” (AKA Chocolate Mint Balls), card making, angels and home building. There were around10 tables of activities

This was followed by Prayer and Worship and finally an extravagant feast. Worship was about Jesus being the light of the world from Luke’s gospel.

In Prayer time the congregation were invited to write on a star shape as a family. Families took the stars home to hang on their Christmas tree.

The feast was organised by Ros Rowe and her team who provided amazing finger food consistent with Christmas celebrations – Christmas cake, chips, dips, sandwiches, sausage rolls, frankfurts, fairy bread, ice-cream and lollies. There was an overabundance of food.

It was an honour to see families spending quality time with each other in St. Mary’s Church.

The reception by the people who attended was very positive as they verbally expressed their gratitude to the team. Overall, it was a wonderful evening and Reverent Jazz Dow who organised it was particularly grateful to these parishioners for all that they did to help to share the love of God with our community of Ballina and Lennox Head.

In 2013 Messy Church is beginning in the Parish as monthly event.

Best wishes to Helen Fry who has taken over as the

Publisher of the Lennox Wave as well as Editor,a job she has been doing for many years. We wish you well and know that our very special local magazine will continue to be eagerly looked forward to each month.

At our last meeting we were told that our long standing member Baxter Williams had donated all the Neighbourhood Watch memorabilia to the Heritage Committee who were delighted to receive it as a record of a very valuable organisation which existed in Lennox in the 1980’s and 90’s.Baxter and others liased with the police to make our village a safe place where neighbours were aware of any unusual happenings in their area. Maybe life was not as hectic then and we had more interaction with our neighbourhood life and it is sad to think that an organisation such as this ceased because of lack of interest. Our Coastcare group carried out their final “job” for the year with the erection of Santa Claus on his surfboard at the northern entrance to the village. Our late member Brian Smith created Santa so not only do we celebrate Christmas at this time but remember a very loved member of the Association. Santa was removed before

New Year and the surfer boy and his surfboard (also created by Brian) will once again be put up after he has had a needed “paint job “which is being carried out by Percy Chute.

At the B Ward Committee meeting last December our Councillor Sharon Cadwallader and President Fred Goodman put forward a proposal to flood-proof Ross Lane as a high priority. This should have been done years ago but now as Ross Lane is the direct route to the motorway it is essential. You may have seen in Council notices that the present site of the fire station in Park Lane has been extended for 10 years. Our Association are appalled by this and have previously made it known to Council that these conditions are sub-standard so urge members of the public to become involved as well.It is a disgrace that our ‘firies’ should be in these conditions for any longer than necessary and we should all be agitating that the erection of a new station on the by-pass land site should be commenced immediately, not in 10 years time.

As we agitated for many years for a Community Centre we also put aside some money to purchase something for the Centre. We are now aware that the Library could use some tub chairs, small coffee table, a reading mat and a clock so we are happy to purchase whatever we can for them.

On 18 December, the Lennox Head Trojans Rugby

Union Club proudly presented the Ballina Breast Cancer Care Group with a $5,000 donation.

“A number of our club members have recently been touched by this disease, and we were pleased to support a local charity that is helping local mums, grandmothers, sisters and daughters in a very practical way,” said Club President, Mark McDonald.

“The majority of our breast cancer fundraising was undertaken on the last day of club competition in 2012. Our first grade wore pink jerseys for the match, and afterwards, each jersey was auctioned. We are delighted with the support shown towards this initiative by all people in attendance, which helped us to top out our previous fundraising total of $2,000 for this worthy charity in 2010,” he said.

“As a club, it’s important that in addition to winning premierships and nurturing our young talent, we can also show our support for others in need within our community,” he said.

Ballina Breast Cancer Support Group Co-ordinator, Robyn Sparks, said that she was delighted and a little overwhelmed with the donation, which will greatly assist the work of her Support Group.

“I am a breast cancer survivor myself, and understand first-hand the need for support services locally for people experiencing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.”

“In addition to advocating for our own local screening services, we coordinate monthly support group meetings, provide free transport for people who have difficulty attending appointments, and help with bills and petrol for people experiencing financial stress whilst undergoing treatment," she said.

Above: Lennox Head Rugby Union Football Club President, Mark McDonald, presents a cheque for $5,000 to Robyn Sparks, Ballina Breast Cancer Support Group Co-ordinator (second from left), with supporters Barbara and Sandra in attendance.

Below: Trojans First Division player, Lachie Creagh, is all set to have his pink rugby jersey auctioned to help raise funds for the Ballina Breast Cancer Support Group.

Registrations for the 2013 Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Ballina to Byron Bay Charity Walk will open on Friday 1st February with a twilight bbq on Boulders Beach from 6pm.

Events coordinator with Westpac Helicopter Kellie Pinkerton is urging people to get their teams together before then as she expects registrations to fill up fast.

“We have extended the number of participants to 1000 this year up from 550 due to demand,” Ms Pinkerton said.

“Judging by the amazing response from participants in the Walk last year, and the number of people who missed out, we feel sure this number will be reached very quickly.”

So if you intend ‘walking the walk’ get together with your friends, work colleagues, fellow gym junkies, family – whoever

– and have your team ready to register on Friday 1st February.

The Ballina to Byron Bay Charity Walk will follow the coastal route from Ballina with three finishing points at Lennox Head, 12km, Broken Head 25km and Byron Bay 37km. The Walk is a major fundraiser for the Service raising over $40,000 in 2012.

Information and registration is available online at www.ballinatobyronwalk.com.au or phone Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter on 66237 4444.

wIshIng tREEIt was over 20 years ago that local

artist Melissa Wright came across the idea of writing wishes on paper.

'It is a native American tradition to make a wish and write it on paper and then throw it into the fire,' she says.

A few years ago she introduced the idea of a wishing tree to her art students, and this year she brought it to the main street of Lennox Head. But what will happen to the wishes?

According to Melissa, 'When I dismantle the tree I will honour the private personal nature of these wishes and the spirit with which the tree was created.'

1. Where are you from originally and what is your connection to Lennox Head?

I grew up in Lismore where my parents still live and I had always holidayed in Lennox. My brother Greg and I have always been in business partnership together and we run several local businesses. Greg takes care of the Lennox side and I focus on our business Machinery Automation & Robotics in Sydney

2. What is your job, and can you explain your business briefly for the laypeople among us?

I started my career doing an electrical apprenticeship in Lismore. In 1987 I started my own electrical business which gradually evolved from more electrical based work to automation and robotics projects. We now provide the latest world-leading technology and turnkey

automation and robotics solutions to industrial clients. The business now has offices in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne and employs 70 staff. My position is CEO.

3. What symptom of Parkinson's did you first notice and where were you when it first happened?

It was a tremor in my left hand. I actually got up to speak at a company planning day. I had papers in one hand and they started to shake.

4. Can you describe your initial reaction?

It was two shocks, first that I had Parkinson’s and second that there was no cure — at this time. My choice from there was either to be Clyde with Parkinson’s or Clyde that does something about Parkinson’s.

5. Can you describe your symptoms – which is the most

difficult in terms of day-to-day living?

I have a constant tremor mainly on the left hand side.

6. If you could put it in a nutshell, how would you describe your life philosophy; the approach you take to help you deal with the cards you have been dealt?

Enjoy the present, design the future and have plenty of fun along the way

7. Tell us a bit about the Shake it Up Foundation. What is its main objective?

Shake It Up Foundation Australia has one aim: to find a cure for Parkinson’s. The foundation raises funds for Parkinson’s research through our supporters and community fundraising arm Team Fox Australia. The foundation has a partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation who processes all our grant applications through their research model. All funding raised stays in Australia but by using MJFF to process our grant applications we are ensuring that the grants are all globally competitive and can make a real difference to achieving our goal. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to Parkinson's research and we cover the general administration expenses of the foundation.

shAKIng UP PARKInson’s REsEARchParkinson’s disease is one of the most common brain conditions in

Australia, with somewhere between 25 and 30 people being diagnosed every day. And yet, this condition which now affects around 80,000 Australians, still has scientists and doctors stumped as to its causes.

Clyde Campbell is a successful businessman who grew up in the Northern Rivers and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 44. In 2011 he established the Shake it Up Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to accelerate research and find a cure. This month he chatted with us about his journey and work of the Shake It Up Foundation.

Money can get pretty tight at this time of year after all the excitement of Christmas winds down, and some of us who are single mothers, aged pensioners or have large families, feel particularly stressed and really need help.

St Vincent De Paul wants you to know that there is help available, and that they are here in Lennox Head if you need some assistance.

Every Tuesday between 11am and 12, representatives of St Vincent De Paul are available in the demountable building behind the Holy Family, Catholic Church, Ballina Street, Lennox Head.

Drop in and have a chat, if you are feeling the pinch—they’ve got lots of ways that they can help.

On the 1st January this year, 7 lucky scouts from Lennox Head Scout Group attended the 23rd Australian Jamboree in Maryborough QLD. Having spent 2 years fundraising and preparing for this mega-camp, they were excited and full of anticipation. Their 3 ‘lucky’ leaders were also with them wondering how on earth they would cope with 12 nights and 13 days with almost 9000 scouts.

They needn’t have worried – the jamboree site was a highly organized mini tent city with exciting activities organized for the scouts from 8am to 9.30pm every day. Climbing, water-sports, circus stunts, a trip to Australia Zoo, Lasertag, car smashing, flying foxes and giant water slides were just a few of the many activites to do. In addition to the activities, the scouts had to run their campsite, cook, clean up, collect water and even do their own washing !! Just

in case they had any energy left, there were big names playing every night: Tim-o-matic, Reece Mastin, Jessica Mauboy, Consentino, Justice Crew – The scouts were so tired but in music and activity heaven. The experience was simply amazing for scouts and leaders alike.

1st Lennox head Scout Troop would like to thank the Lennox Head Community for their support and generosity in our fundraising events, which made this once-in-a-lifetime experience possible.

The recent outbreak of Canine Parvo Virus disease around the state, and particularly in the Northern Rivers, highlights the importance of getting pets vaccinated and having those vaccinations updated regularly. Parvo is a particularly viscious disease that is highly contagious, highly fatal and extremely long-lived in the environment. However there are other examples of diseases popping up that pets should also be vaccinated against. A recent outbreak of Kennel Cough in the Byron/Ballina area comes to mind. In cats, for example, Feline Flu and Feline AIDS are seen fairly regularly.

All of the above diseases are a part of a good preventive vaccination regime. The reasons for these diseases popping up periodically and causing much misery and/or mortality, are several.

First is, (surprise surprise), failure to vaccinate. There is always a bit of controversy around the “should I, shouldn’t I” question. I recommend vaccination unreservedly! I actually feel pretty strongly about this since I think the “no vaccination” lobby is getting a free-health-ride from those who do vaccinate their pets. A population of animals (and this includes humans) will get a certain “herd immunity” if enough are vaccinated. I.e. the disease has less hosts and less opportunity to spread if the majority of animals in contact are vaccinated. There’s no doubt that vaccinations produce minor side effects, and very occasionally serious side effects. However the benefits far outweigh the risk. Anyone who has witnessed the consequences of Parvo would not think twice.

The second major reason we see outbreaks of these horrible conditions is that vaccination does not, and has never expected

to,offer100%protectionevenif given under ideal conditions. For example, some studies have shown that in America, across large numbers of the dog population known to be vaccinated under ideal conditions,upto10%ofdogswillstill fail to develop a satisfactory immunity against Distemper.

Your Vet will recommend at least 2 vaccinations, with the last being between 10 and 12 weeks. To offer best protection against disease and to catch a percentage of animals with longer acting internal antibodies, a final vaccine is ideally offered at about 16 weeks of age.

In closing, I should mention that generally in Lennox Head we see a low incidence of all these hideous diseases, probably in large part due to the high vaccination rate and the commitment shown by so many wonderful pet owners. So, well done everybody, keep up the good work!

Head Physical Culture Club. We are very excited to announce that Margaret

Heggen will commence ladies Physical Culture classes right here in Lennox Head from February 14th 2013.

The BjP brand of physical culture known as ‘physie’ combines marching, exercise, aerobic-type warm up, ballet & yoga moves in a distinctive type of dance enjoyed now by thousands of girls and women in Australia.

Margaret Heggen began her ‘physie’ days as a child with the Leichhardt Physical Culture Club. Year after year she successfully competed as a National finalist and continued to contest National titles well into her forties. Now Margaret is looking forward to guiding Lennox ladies from beginners to the more experienced to achieve their goals for 2013.

If you believe (like Margaret) that ‘everything old can be new again’, call Sharyn (0400 242 340) or Margaret (6622 2126 ) and register your interest.

Classes will be held at the Lennox Head Community Centre on Thursdays 5:45pm – 7:15pm from 14th February 2013 during school terms, for just a portion of the cost of other dance classes.

Stepping On is an exciting and friendly community group program for seniors. It is designed to build knowledge, strength and confidence to help participants remain living independently at home.

The 7 week program will provide you with information on how to reduce your risk of falling and maximise your independence at home. Local health professionals and invited guests present this program.

The Familiars is a local band with several members who live in Lennox Head, where they often rehearse.

According to band member Michael Watson, who plays guitar and piano (and who many locals will know from his part-time job at IGA), the guys met through friends at university about a year ago, and have been putting in a solid effort ever since to establish themselves in the region.

And they’ve done a great job so far, with their first single ‘Your Friends’ receiving airplay on FBi Radio and 4ZZZFM. Since then, they have been performing between Brisbane and Byron Bay, playing just under 30 shows since they formed in early 2012. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Sticky Fingers, Kingswood, My Fiction and Rogerthat.

And in March the boys are heading off on tour again, doing a series of shows that will include Sydney, Brisbane, Newcastle, Gold Coast and Byron.

The Familiars describe their music as 'full-blooded, two-guitar driven, high impact indie rock. It’s got a

dash of grit, plenty of melodic sensibility and a heck of a lot of danceability.'

Michael says they’ve also got a gig at the Lennox Pub lined up somewhere in the near future, so keep an eye out for this truly local outfit.

And listen out for the second single from The Familiars titled Start It Up and released through Bandcamp.

mUsIcAL FAmILYIt was a family affair at Lennox Pub on 20 January

as the Campbell clan from Melbourne gathered for its annual holiday performance — an occasion that brings together close to 30 family members and friends in various combinations to perform classic songs for everyone.

The floor was carpeted by little people all eager to see their friends and relatives on stage, and they weren't disappointed when the baby Campbells kicked the night off.

everyone a highly successful and enjoyable 2013. Lennox continues to be a vibrant and sought-after holiday destination, and businesses have been busy over the Christmas holidays.

Lennox Head Carols in the Park was a great success – thanks to Louise Owen and her extensive team of volunteers from the Lennox community. Santa arrived by helicopter and the fireworks were spectacular!

The Chamber is looking for members to host the Business After Hours (BAH) events during the year. Hosting the Business After Hours allows the host to promote their business and enables members to meet, network and socialise.

The Chamber is following closely the resurrection of the old Bowls Club into the Lennox Head Community Sports & Recreation Club Inc and is optimistic that the members will be able to find a solution that allows the premises to re-open within 12 months and become a vital community asset once more. The Chamber is ready to assist in any way we can.

Our first Chamber networking event of the year will be a Business Breakfast on Wednesday 6 February from 7am - 8.30am. Venue to be confirmed. There will

be a surprise Guest Speaker (we understand that Sir Richard Branson may be in the area!). Please RSVP to [email protected] as soon as possible to assist with catering.

In December last year, just in time for the holiday season, Pete Crossman and his partner Mayumi Miyata opened Lennox Head's first Japanese restaurant. Hooray.

The pair, who met on the Gold Coast during the Surf Pro, have worked together to create a laid back, modern day-time restaurant, focusing mainly on lunch that includes sushi rolls and burgers. Pete has brought his years of cooking exprience and Mayumi has added her natural Japanese flair for creating tasty food, including all the sauces which have been very popular with customers so far.

And the team is about to get bigger, when local chef Trent Chapman joins to help turn Freewave into a chic night time restaurant, serving a range of Japanese food, from street food

When The Lennox Wave celebrated 100 issues Manda Keller of Honey Cub Clips hand crafted a felt Lennox Wave logo especially for the occasion and we are forever grateful for her ingenuity and creativity. (pictured right)

Manda is a stay-at-home mum who began her business out of a desire to hand make something for her daughter. Because her daughter had beautiful hair, Manda decided to make something unique for her hair. This then led to friends asking for pieces and before she knew it, she had a market stall.

These days Manda makes felt clips plus ribbon lined alligator clips and hair ties with a variety of patterns as well as plain school colours. She also makes felt flower clips in an array of colours and has recently added felt animals in a little bed which are popular with

pre-schoolers.Drawing on

her background of teaching at Lennox Head preschool Manda has added handmade playdough to the range which she makes in bold bright colours and packages to look like a rainbow or with sea animals.

‘I am passionate about supporting other local handmade businesses and helping educate people about handmade, we are so used to the mass produced market but there is so much more individuality in handmade things. With handmade items there is often a lot of love poured into the product. It’s also another great way to support local businesses.’

Trent has come direct from the Italian at the Pacific in Byron Bay, and has cooked all over the world including a long stint in Vancouver. He is familiar with Japanse food having run Savvy Japanese restaurant in Byron Bay, and is full of energy and ideas.

The trio's plan is to open Freewave from Wednesday to Saturday nights 5.30 - 9pm, with seats for 40 people, offering delicious Japanese food cooked mainly by Trent, with a liquor license and a

great atmosphere—the vibe will be the result of a unique blend of Japanese and surf cultures.

Locals and visitors are going to love this unusual tasty offering. Nights start early February.

Every holiday town needs an internet cafe, and we still have one.

Although Seagrass had to move their little internet cafe from the arcade to make way for Villagio Spa, they did not close it down altogether.

These days, if you want to connect online, you now have to go into the Seagrass shop and on the right hand side you will find a door way and beyond that is a small room dedicated to connecting online.

According to Pedro Mansouri (David and Parvin's oldest son who works in the shop), there are four terminals on offer, providing a wireless hotspot, plus printing facilities.

The prices are $3 for half an hour and that includes the price of printing.

Troy Lister was born in the Northern Rivers, but not long afterwards his family moved to Newcastle where he grew up.

From a family of bakers, Troy started cooking early and at only 15 he began his chef's apprenticeship. Over the years he worked at several top restaurants including Madison (a 5 Star restaurant in Newcastle), Bay View at Warners Bay and Romans Italian restaurant in Manly, which seated 450 diners and was often full. It was here that Troy got the extensive experience managing staff in a high pressure, high turnover environment.

When he was all grown up Troy moved back to the Northern Rivers, and apart from a few stints overseas, he's been here pretty much ever since.

According to Troy 'There have been some rough times and some steep learning curves, but all of them have set me up for what has come afterwards.'

He has worked all over Lennox Head, and includes Quattro, Fishy Fishy and the old Ruby's upstairs at the Lennox Hotel on his CV.

He credits two local men with having an enormous influence on his professional life.

'I was lucky enough to work with Malcolm at Fishy Fishy. He taught me so much about business and about being a good bloke. He showed me how to run a business— to provide that genuine personal service, all focused on being part of a small village'.

'Then I got the job at Ruby's at the pub and I started talking with Greg Campbell about what could be done at the hotel to provide something quality and specialised for the town. I had a lot of input into the plans for this place, and he has listened to me all the way.'

Melbourne yoga teacher Leona Rickerby moved to Lennox Head five years ago and not long afterwards became mother to baby Jarvis.

The experience of being a busy new mum inspired Leona to begin her own small business, delivering fresh, farm picked, organic produce to the doors of her customers.

Every week she meets her suppliers — Muwillumbah farmers Sandy and Matt Everest — at the Byron Farmers' Market where she picks up the week's produce, which she then brings home to box up.

'One of the things that makes me feel good about the business is the fact that I know it's good, fresh organic food,' says Leona. 'I also really enjoy the process of putting all the produce in the boxes, which look really beautiful with their little herb bouquets.'

See Leona's ad on page 8.

Fifteen years ago, publican Craig Hayward was happy pulling beers and swapping tales at his pub, The Bark Hut Inn, in the Northern Territory.

Fast forward to 2013 and a different story presents. Craig, with wife Tamara, has created an award winning coffee

enterprise with their signature coffee labels, Coffee Lush and MacKellar Range.

Craig initially knew nothing about coffee growing. In 2000, he purchased land at Hogarth Range, planting 20,000 coffee trees shortly afterwards. From these humble beginnings, Craig has become a coffee maestro, mastering all aspects of the business from harvesting, drying, packaging and marketing. Most recently, Craig has installed a coffee roaster, with all beans now roasted on farm, to order.

In October 2012, Coffee Lush and MacKellar Range received a silver award in the prestigious and fiercely contested ‘Australian Milk’ category at the Golden Bean Awards in Caloundra, the world’s biggest coffee roasting competition.

ELLEnIX REstAURAntThe stunning Ellenix restaurant on the shorefront at

Lennox Head is now under new management. Existing owners Jimmy and Kremena Gelagotis have brought award-winning chef Andy Wheeler and his wife Luisa on board to create a quality new and interesting offering which combines Meditteranean food with a modern Aussie influence.

Andy Wheeler has been working in and around the kitchens of south east Queensland and northern New South Wales for over 17 years, including Cafe Affair, Broad beach, Rae's at Wattegos, Omeros Brothers Seafood Gold Coast, and Sandbar Casaurina.During his time at Wattegos he was awarded a chef's hat from the Good Food Guide.

He also spent some time working on a surf charter boat, catching fresh fish during the day and serving it up on guest's plates at night.

It is there that Andy developed his love of seafood—coming back to the Northern Rivers he has been able to combine that with fresh, seasonal, local ingredients to

create great dishes, many of which also pay tribute the the influence of Asian cooking on modern contemporary food.

The Ellenix team have young children, and are keen to offer affordable children's dishes to diners.

And they have opened up a cafe and deli at the side of rhe restaurant, which offers coffee, juices, sandwiches, salads and wraps to a growing lunch time crowd.

Welcome to the Ellenix team.

Then a few years later she took up bookkeeping as a way of getting back into the work force.

Not long after, she landed a full time job working as the accounts manager for Bluesfest.

'Actually it was more than a full-time job,' she says, 'it was more like having a second family! I'd spend really long hours there, and then I'd come home and try to catch up with everything here,' she says.

'Although I loved it, in the end I had to give it away, it was just too much. Although I still work there during the Festival.'

Since then Cath has done a bookkeeping course that trained her to do what she was already doing and knew so well.

'I loved it, and so enjoyed the challenge of study and learning', shes says.

So now Cath is offering her services as a bookkeeper and office administrator.

'I prefer to go onsite and work, but I am happy to take a shoe box home if that's what the client has.

'I just love organising receipts!'Check out Cath's ad on page 6.

This is Matt Lewis, 15 year old apprentice at The Point Cafe, where he is benefiting from the wisdom and tutelage of Simon Cass. Simon is moulding Matt into a real professional, using a combination of education, training, and good old fashioned ribbing.

Still Matt says the staff at The Point are great people to work with.

Matt is studying at Wollongbar TAFE, where he will learn to be a chef. When asked why he chose that career, Matt answered, 'I like food.'

We can't think of a better reason and wish him all the best.

Twenty five years ago fifth generation dairy farmer Robert Gray and his wife Shirley decided to sell their farm and look for a different kind of business that would provide for the next generation of their family. At the time they had two teenage children —son Graeme who was 18 and daughter Suzanne, 15—and they dreamed of a sea change.

'We looked all up and down the north coast,' says Robert, 'and this was the best option. The park itself was nine years old at the time.'

So on 2nd Feb 1988 they bought the Ballina Headlands Leisure Park and entered the toursim industry. It is an industry that their two children have grown up in, and

a business that they and their partners now run.

Graeme and his wife Natasha, and Suzanne and her husband Jardon Vagne are the four owners and managers of the business now and all live on site with their children. Mum and Dad have kept ownership of the land, and live just up the hill in Skennars Head. Shirley still contributes her skills as seamstress repairing curtains and mattress covers, while Robert still has a casting vote if there is an issue that needs resolving, but according to Suzanne, that's rare.

'It's because we understand the need for boundaries,' she says.

'And,' says Graeme 'we all have our clearly defined roles and duties.'

FAmILY cELEBRAtEs 25 YEARs

The family has made many changes over the years, and is improving the site all the time.

'I remember when we first came here there was a line of matching on-site caravans and we thought that was pretty good,' says Robert.

'But these days it's flat screen TVs and all the mod cons.'

We thought we ought to introduce readers to Tracey and Mick Donovan, manager/caretakers of the Absolute Beachfront Apartments—even though they’ve been in that position for over a year and are Lennox locals since about 1974.

Many will know Tracey from her years at ANZ bank (in the main street of Lennox Head) and Southern Cross Credit Union, and others will know Mick (who first surfed the Point in 1969) from the time he won the first Le-Ba championship way back in 1980-81.

What everyone who knows the couple will affirm is that they have a great sense of humour and enjoy the role they have, managing the apartments and looking after the visitors that just keep coming back.

Tony Gooden has moved up to Lennox Head from Narambeen on the northern beaches in Sydney, bringing his 19 year-old daughter Brittany with him.

While Brittany has enrolled in media and creative writing at SCU, Tony has started work with Stuart Hallam at our local Poolwerx.

Tony has over 10 years experience working with pools and says it is the only job that he has ever done that comes completely naturally to him. He had his own pool shop in Sydney so is familiar with the business.

Tony loves people and working outdoors. So he's a perfect fit for his role in pool maintenance, cleaning and repairs.

Delve into the teenage world and nine times out of ten, what you will find is low self esteem, uncertainty about one's place in the world, even depression. It can be a difficult time of life, and one that is perhaps not dealt with very well in our society.

That's why the work that Elizabeth Lund does is so incredibly important, and why her courses are being thoroughly embraced by our community.

But let's start at the beginning. Elizabeth grew up on the Central

Elizabeth Lund, grace school of deportmentcoast where her mother Denise Lund ran a modelliing and casting agency for 15 years.

So Elizabeth spent her whole childhood participating in the school, both as a student learning with her peers, and later as a teacher. She spent some time working in casting, providing actors for commercials like Kelloggs, Fosters and Lotto.

That all ended when Denise retired and Elizabeth got married, had four boys and moved to Tintenbar.

Elizabeth had no plans to continue with the modelling or deportment classes, until some girlfriends who knew her history asked her to run a class for their girls. Since then she hasn't stopped.

'My focus has never been on modelling or casting, but primarily on building confidence and self esteem,' she says.

'I tell the girls (because it is mostly girls who enrol although there have been some boys too) that we are all different, and we cannot realistically aim to have the bodies that we see on TV.'

'I build a relationship with the

girls, make them feel comfortable and safe—relaxed enough to open up and talk about what matters to them,' she says.

'I tell them that everyone has problems and it's important to feel supported and not judged at these times.'

Once that level of trust is built, then Elizabeth moves onto subjects like social etiquette, makeup, deportment, posture, speech, image and style..

'It is not about trying to change their appearance,' she says, 'or to seek approval of others or to conform to some kind of media image or ideal.'

'It's the same message as their mothers are giving them, but sometimes teens just don't want to listen to their mothers.'

Elizabeth offers intensive school holiday programs with up to 30 girls in a class. She is also involved in staging fashion events for Lismore Square and is a major sponsor of Miss Country Girl Australia.

'I love making a difference in people's lives. I guess I have an extreme passion for helping people.'

And if all that plus raising four boys is not enough, she has also enrolled in an events management course this year with the aim of continuing the work she is doing.

If you have made a resolution to get out and do something different this year then working with landcare is a great chance to help the environment and meet new people. The skills required are easily learned and a commitment to regular attendance is not required. Working bees are strictly managed to keep within the scheduled two hours to allow people to plan their day. Most people work at each of our sites but it is also possible to devote time to a particular area.

Apart from the main group, which works on several projects, there is a team dedicated to operating at Skennars Head and another currently working along the path to Pat Morton Lookout. Both are looking for helpers to continue their programs during 2013.

The maintenance and extension of the littoral rainforest sites at Boulder Beach will again be the focus of our activities this year. The Seven Mile Beach site opposite Williams Street is starting to stabilize as the battle to replace bitou bush with native species is slowly being won. Apart from Boulder Beach and Seven Mile Beach, work will continue to control the weeds on both sides of the lake and the reserve on the corner of Ross Lane and Fig Tree Hill Drive.

If you would like more information, call Malcolm on 6687 5602 or Barbara on 6687 5609 or just turn up at the start of one of the working bees.

Landcare dates for February. (Times are 8.00 am to 10.00 am during Feb) Wed 6th Boulder Beach Coast Road car parkWed 13th Lower Point Surfers car park or Pat Morton car park Wed 20th Seven Mile Beach Opposite Blackboard CafeWed 27th Boulder Beach Coast Road car park.

There are some very good reasons for the introduction of the new 3 bin system, not the least of those being that we are running out of room to dump our waste. What's more, our rubbish is creating lots of methane, the deadly gas that contributes to global warming. So we need to get smarter and greener with our rubbish.

These bin sizes should represent the waste that comes from your home.

In Ballina Shire most household rubbish is recyclable – even the organics. So after you have put the meat, vegetable and garden waste in the organics bin and your plastics, metals, glass, paper and cardboard in the recyclables bin, there should be very little waste left for the garbage bin. Non recyclables such as plastic packets, wrap, foam and plastic bags need to go in the garbage bin, as do nappies.

The Green (organics) bin is picked up every week, like your old garbage bin was, as it contains all the things that break down and omit odour. Special bags

are even available if you don’t want to use newspaper to wrap your scraps – just make sure they are compostable, not simply ‘biodegradable’. The reason we separate organics to compost is because when it’s buried in landfill it decomposes without oxygen and creates methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

By recycling right and composting our organics we are reducing our impact on climate change and saving on landfill space – a great outcome for our planet and community. Jeanie McKillop, North East Waste Forum Coordinator
