Educational NewsNAVTA CONTINUING EDUCATION INITIATIVEMerial and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) are adding new preventive health programs to their Merial Tech Champions program. The additional courses, covering intestinal parasites, dental health, and fl ea and tick protection, debuted at the 2016 AVMA Convention. Merial and NAVTA fi rst teamed up 3 years ago to support technicians in their efforts to provide the best possible counsel and care in-clinic, with a focus on heartworm disease prevention. Based on the positive response, Merial has worked with NAVTA to add new courses covering other critical areas in preventive health. These courses are offered throughout the year at various veterinary technician meetings.

PET THERAPEUTICS COMPANY MOVES NEW MEDICATIONS, STUDIES FORWARDAratana Therapeutics has submitted an administrative New Animal Drug Application for Nocita (bupivacaine liposome injectable suspension) with the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. Nocita is a local anesthetic that provides analgesia for up to 72 hours after surgery by releasing bupivacaine over time from multi-vesicular liposomes deposited in the tissue. The therapeutic is administered as a single dose by tissue infi ltration during closure of cranial cruciate ligament surgery in dogs. Aratana Therapeutics also presented effi cacy and safety data at the 2016 ACVIM Forum on FDA-approved Entyce (capromorelin oral solution) therapeutic for appetite stimulation for dogs. NATIONAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN FOR VETERINARY CAREBlue Buffalo Company has launched a national consumer education campaign to reinforce the importance of regular veterinary care.
