Prayer

This year Presentation College’s ANZAC Service will focus

on the contribution of women in the care and service given

during times of war and conflict.

Gracious and loving God,

As we mark over 100 years of devotion and service to the

Armed Forces by Australian Women, we remember all

who lost their lives through Australia’s involvement in

wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

On this national day of commemoration, we pray for all

women who courageously committed themselves to the

care of soldiers and civilians in times of war, and to the

service of the nation in various conflicts and peacekeep-

ing operations.

We also pray for the airmen, sailors and soldiers who

died in battle, sacrificing their lives while on duty.

We commemorate the bravery of these women and men

and we pray for the families who lost loved ones.

As we strive for peace in our country and world, help us

to become instruments of your peace. We ask this prayer

through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

We hope that all our PCW families had a happy and restful Easter. After the calm and reflection of Holy Week, Term 2 has

begun in earnest at PCW. Staff began the term working on MYP and VCE/VCAL course writing on Monday 16th April. We

then welcomed students back on Tuesday 17th April. The girls look wonderful in their PCW winter uniforms and are eager to

learn and participate in College life.

Year 7 students have enjoyed a fantastic camp at Phillip Island, accompanied by our Year 10 VET Sport and Recreation

students. This was an opportunity for the Year 7s to get to know each other and themselves better, undertaking a range of

activities designed to test their determination, resilience and team building. This camp is a vital part of the transition

experience for the girls, and it has further enhanced the girls’ connections with their peers and the College. Thank you to

Ms. Natalie Tommasini for her leadership of the camp, and Ms. Rachael Maddox and Mr. Gerard Morais for their work with

the VET students. Thanks to all staff who participated and attended.

Parent Teacher interviews will be held at PCW on Monday 23rd April and Thursday 26th April. Years 7, 8 and 9 will be

dismissed at 1.00 pm on both days. Years 10, 11 & 12 classes will continue as normal for Period 4 on these days, to ensure

time in senior classes is maximized. The interviews are an important opportunity for parents, students and teachers to

discuss our students’ learning, progress and development.

This week, we will also commemorate ANZAC Day, and the Memorial Day of the founder of the Presentation Sisters – Nano

Nagle. Thank you to Ms. Josie Dilettoso, Head of Faith and Mission, for her work in ensuring we truly capture the essence of

both occasions – Service to others.

ANZAC Service at Presentation College

In the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, there are two national memorials to Australian

women’s involvement in wars and peace operations.

One memorial is to nurses, and the other is to servicewomen. Under each figure is a word which describes a quality

displayed by Australian women during wartime.

The figure of the nurse represents all military nurses who have shown dedication to their

patients and a commitment to caring for the sick and wounded during wartime. This

The figure of the Servicewoman commemorates all women who served, suffered, and

those who died in the defence of Australia. The figure bears the word Service.

In war time women often work in remote and dangerous places, under difficult

conditions. Such service does not come without a cost. Some women have not

returned home, losing their lives to sickness, as prisoners of war or during battle and

armed conflict.

Project Compassion

This year Project Compassion focused on the theme “A

Just Future,” and highlighted how Caritas Australia is

working together with vulnerable people, helping them

to develop their strengths and create change in their

own communities.

This year the Social Justice Team decided to run a

campaign across the school to raise enough money for a

community to purchase 145 goats. Goats enable

vulnerable communities to become self-sufficient

through the selling of their milk, cheese, fur and meat.

Dubbed ‘Project Goatpassion’ the girls coordinated with

the Heads of House to run a variety of activities to help

raise funds for Caritas. The goal of the campaign was to

raise enough money that will enable a community to

buy 145 goats – in celebration of our 145 years!

Throughout Term 1 we had a pancake day, cake stalls,

fish and chip Friday, sausage sizzle, an Easter egg hunt,

raffles, henna days, casual clothes day, and an ice-cream

day. Together with the money donated in the Project

Compassion boxes the students raised over $2,000. A

great result for Caritas. I would like to thank the Social

Justice Team together with the Heads of House and the

Mission Team, students and staff for contributing to

such a wonderful total.

Term 2 has already got off to a busy start with the Year 7 and Sport and Recreation camps. I hope the students enjoyed their time away. This term will be another busy term at the College and I wish to draw your attention to a number of upcoming events. Parent-Teacher Progress Interviews We look forward to seeing parents and students on the afternoons/evenings of Monday 23 and Thursday 26 April. These interviews provide an opportunity for you to meet your daughter’s teachers and to find out her progress so far this year, strengths and areas for continued improvement. Students will receive an interim report that addresses their quality of work as well as their skills for learning (organisation for learning, application to learning, engagement) which have been assessed against a rubric (available here). Parent relationships with the College are extremely important in ensuring student success in their learning. We encourage parents to attend the progress interviews as well as continue to access feedback on assessment tasks via the portal. NAPLAN The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. On Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 May, students will undertake the 2018 NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Parents will receive further information on the tests by the College Principal. We wish all our Year 7 and 9 students the very best as they complete these tests. Compulsory attendance at exams At PCW semester exams are held at the end of Term 2 and Term 4 for students in Years 9 to 12. Students at these year levels will receive an exam timetable over the coming weeks and they can start a revision plan in preparation for the exams.

Exams are an integral part of the College’s academic program and as such they are compulsory for students. If a student is unable to sit an exam we require a medical certificate. We appreciate and recognise that exams can be stressful for students, and in future editions of the Lantern I will provide tips on how to prepare for exams. Professional Learning at PCW PCW is committed to providing a 21st century contemporary and engaging curriculum and learning environment. In light of this, the College is working towards authorisation to deliver the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). Monday 16 April was a busy day for our staff as they continued writing curriculum and assessment tasks in line with the MYP, as well as writing curriculum for new VCE Study Designs. In the afternoon staff participated in interest workshops focusing on: technology skills, High Impact Teaching Strategies, research skills and the Berry Street Education Model. During the Term 1 holidays a group of Learning Leaders were fortunate to participate in a three day training workshop in Sydney for the MYP. We are truly blessed to have a wonderful staff who are committed to their professional learning. Homework Club Homework Club will continue this term from 3.15 to 4.15 pm every Tuesday afternoon in the Library. Girls from Years 7 to 9 are welcome to attend and receive extra support with their studies. Conference Presentations On Friday 20 April and Saturday 21 April the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria Inc. (JLTAV) held their annual conference for Japanese teachers. I presented a workshop on using virtual reality glasses to teach Japanese. I have a strong interest in using digital technologies to support student learning. I will share this presentation with the Languages Faculty as well as introduce virtual reality glasses to the staff. I wish everyone a wonderful Term 2 and good health as we enter the colder months. Year 7 Camp

Monday 23 April 2018

On Monday 16th April the 2018 Year 7 cohort took off to Phillip Island for the annual Year 7 camp. Whilst all other students at PCW had one more day of rest on school holidays, the Year 7 students met at the College by 8.30am, ready to begin camp at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort (PIAR). Whilst the weather was not looking great, the students were smiling and ready to get going. This year we took 31 Sport and Recreation students on this camp. The Year 10 students ran an alternate program; however, assisted the Year 7 students during day 2 and ran night time activities during night 1 and 2. It was a great initiative and I thank the Year 10 students involved, Ms Rachael Maddox and Mr Gerard Morais for assisting with this alternate program. When the students arrived, they were allocated their activity groups and camp cabins. They had 30 minutes of getting-to-know-you activities with their group leader before setting off on their first round of group activities. During night one, students participated in a trivia night and night two saw the girls dancing the night away with a disco, followed by meditation to calm them down before bed. Students were involved in a number of activities at PIAR throughout the three days. Raft Making, Canoeing, The Twin Flying Fox, The Giant Swing and The High Ropes Course really challenged the fears of some of our girls; however, they all embraced the challenges and left the camp with no regrets and only memories.

The final day (Wednesday 18th April) involved a liturgy run by Mr Simon Gitson and a beach walk to Smith’s Beach, where the Year 10 students engaged the Year 7 students in games and amazing photo opportunities. After this action packed camp, the girls assembled on the bus and headed back to PCW where their parents were excited to greet them. The girls were then fortunate enough to enjoy a 10am start on Thursday 19th April. The Year 7 camp cannot go ahead without the help and support of the amazing PCW staff involved. A very big thank you to the following staff for assisting on Year 7 camp: Ms Lori Galli, Ms Estelle Diez, Ms Josephine Oliveri, Ms Simon Gitson, Mr Phil McErvale, Mrs Anne McErvale, Ms Melissa Drentin, Mrs Sally Farr, Ms Fiona Bourne and Ms Brea Kennelly (AFL Trainee). Year 7 Camp Reflections

Monday 23 April 2018

Year 7 camp was fantastic! I had lots of fun and made some new friends. Something I really enjoyed was the twin flying fox. I am very scared of heights. When it was my turn to go on the flying fox I climbed the ladder to the platform. I got up to the flying fox platform with my partner I looked down and everything was small. I started to freak out because I was so high up in the air and that was my first heights activity. Then Matt, the person who was checking our harnesses, clipped Sienna and I to the rope I started to freak out again. I had decided that when it was my turn I would sing “I believe I can fly”. I felt nervous and scared. Sienna flew on the flying fox and I stayed. It was then my go. Matt said if I was scared then I could sit down and go from there. That sounded fine to me. So I did what he told me to do and closed my eyes and went. I then opened my eyes and in 1 min I was in the air. I was scared but a bit excited. I stayed still, held my arms out and started screaming. It was so much fun!!! Then Ms Farr took me down from the flying fox at the end. All I can say is this is the best camp ever and I would like to thank Ms Tommasini for all her hard work and for helping me out in my challenging times. Honestly, camp was a great experience. Everyone was co-operating and everyone was outstanding. The Year 10s and 11s were really nice and I built a few relationships with them. The best thing about it was definitely Smith's Beach and the wet activities. I enjoyed it so much. I jumped into the lake more than twice! Honestly it was great and I enjoyed it immensely. If you thought the Commonwealth Games were amazing you haven’t seen anything yet . . . . . . .

PCW House Athletics Wednesday 2nd May at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park All students are required to attend school on this day and should dress in their house colours and wear appropriate attire. Students are advised to take the necessary Sun Smart precautions and should bring a cut lunch and drink. The canteen will be opened as well. Year 7-8 students can come to school or meet at the stadium if you would prefer ( please record on the Care Monkey form). If you are coming to school be here at 8.15 and meet your home room teacher at the front gate to leave by 8.30am. Students will then be transported with their homeroom teacher via chartered buses to Lakeside Stadium. It is essential that your daughter is punctual to school, as all students need to be on the buses on time in order for the Athletics Carnival to run to schedule. Unless otherwise informed, all Year 7 and 8 students will be transported back to PCW on chartered buses (arriving at school approximately 3.15pm). Years 9-12 students are to meet at Lakeside Stadium at 8.45am, for a 9.15am start. At the conclusion of the Carnival, all Year 9-12 students will be dismissed from Lakeside Stadium at approximately 2.30pm. Please complete the online consent form via Care Monkey by Friday 27th April. It is important that all forms are completed by this date to enable final planning for the event. The carnival is designed around maximum participation and fun for all girls. Participation is strongly encouraged and attendance is compulsory. Students who are absent on this day will be required to present a Doctor’s Certificate on their return to school. If you have any concerns regarding the carnival please feel free to contact me, Cassandra Barnett, via email cbarnett@pcw.vic.edu.au or phone 8517 2742. The SCSA team will be chosen from the results from the day. If your daughter is successful in making the team she is required to attend a compulsory training session at Lakeside on the 7th May 3.30-5.00pm. I understand, as a parent myself that the girls can have many commitments both in school and afterschool. I appreciate your help and support in getting your daughter to and from training leading up to the SCSA event on Friday 11th May.

Important: Please note training has been cancelled at Lakeside on Monday 30th April.

Waverley Netball Competition

The Waverley Netball competi-tion is held in the middle

school holidays over 4 days. PCW will be entering 2 teams,

1 Junior and 1 Senior team.

World’s Greatest Shave

Well done to those students who participated in the World’s Greatest Shave this year. Cutting and shaving their hair for an

amazing cause, to help beat blood cancer.

The College is so very proud of all the students who participated

and commends you on your fundraising efforts.

Year 9 student Madeleine, pictured to the left, raised just over $800 for the Leukaemia Foundation after having her hair cut off on

stage at Federation Square.

Kayla Doan Year 11 Studio Arts Vanitas: Irreggular, Acrylic on Canvas

Year 11 Studio Arts students have been studying

the Vanitas genre of Art. This genre of work features symbols of death, whilst simultaneously

reminding us of our own mortality and asking us to focus on our spiritual life.

Kayla has created this beautiful acrylic on canvas painting, selecting the egg as symbolic of life and

death at the same time.

Sport Grants

The Federal Government’s Local Sporting Champions program provides financial assistance for young people aged between 12 and 18 years who are participating in sporting competitions at a state, national or international level.

Grants of $500 for individuals are available towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when participating as an athlete, coach or official in a recognised sporting competition, including National Sporting Organisation (NSO) endorsed state, national or international championships or a School Sport Australia state or national championships. There are 36 individual grants available for residents of the Higgins electorate, spread across three rounds over the current allocation year which runs from March 2018 until February 2019. Eligible applications are assessed by a panel comprising members of the local community and the panel’s recommendations are submitted for final approval by the Australian Sports Commission.
