Lacrosse players from across the nationwill compete in Wesley Chapel at the Dick’sSporting Goods Tournament of Championsfor at least the next two years.

Pasco County and NDP (NationalDevelopment Program) Lacrosse have en-tered into an agreement that covers thetournament for 2016 and 2017.

Last year’s tournament had a $2.1 millioneconomic impact on Pasco andHillsborough counties, said Ed Caum, PascoCounty’s tourism manager.

With new developments — such asTampa Premium Outlets and FloridaHospital Center Ice, as well as other busi-nesses and restaurants — there’s potentialfor an even greater economic return fromthe visitors, Caum said.

"We are very pleased the Dick's SportingGoods Tournament of Champions lacrossetournament will be returning to WesleyChapel,” Tracy Clouser, board chair of TheGreater Wesley Chamber of Commerce, saidvia email. “We feel the area has a lot to offertournament attendees and their support ofour hotels, restaurants and shopping venueshas a significant economic impact on ourcommunity."

Besides the economic boost, the tourna-ment offers lacrosse players a chance toshowcase their skills, and colleges a chanceto scout for players, Caum said.

Teams from the United States andCanada earn bids at qualifying tournamentsto compete for the national championshipacross five divisions.

The tournament has been held at theWesley Chapel District Park and at WesleyChapel High School since 2008.

This past year, 73 teams competed. Fifty-nine came from out-of-state and 14 werefrom Florida, Caum said. The 2015 tourna-ment involved 1,533 players and 219coaches. There were about 3,250 spectatorson each day of the tournament, which takesplace each year from Dec. 29 through Dec.31.

On average, those traveling to the tourna-ment stayed in the area for 3 ½ days to 4days, Caum said.

But, the tourism manager thinks morecan be done to extend their stay.

And, he’s begun reaching out to areasponsors to help make that happen.

“The event kicks off at the Dick’sSporting Goods Store. They are at The Groveevery year.

Pasco County residents looking to grab abite to eat will have two new dining optionsstarting this month.

One of those options, Cheddar’s ScratchKitchen, opened on June 6.

Before opening day at Cheddar’s, about170 employees received training andworked at an invitation-only dinner sessionto get ready for customers.

“I think we’re excited. It’s a new destina-tion, a new area,” said Mark Garcia, a generalmanager from Laredo, Texas. He was on tem-porary assignment to launch Cheddar’s atthe Cypress Creek Town Center, a major re-tail center anchored by the outlet mall.

Pasco County resident John Seebach willbe the new restaurant’s general manager.

Diners weren’t the only ones eager tohave Cheddar’s on their radar. Garcia saidabout 1,500 people applied for jobs.

The restaurant seats nearly 320 peopleand serves meals made fresh from scratchdaily. Menu items include hand-batteredonion rings, grilled hand-cut salmon, home-made chicken pot pie and hot fudge cakesundaes.

“Everything is made pretty much inhouse,” Garcia said.

This is the first Cheddar’s in Pasco.Next door, construction crews are busy

getting Chick-fil-A primed for its opening.Owner Britt Young previously owned a

Chick-fil-A in Moultrie, Georgia.“I’ve got family all around here,” said

Young, who lives in Lutz. “We love the area.”The chicken chain got its start in 1946 as

a diner in Atlanta, opened by Truett Cathy.Cathy opened his first Chick-fil-A brandrestaurant in 1967, also in Atlanta. From thebeginning, Cathy kept his restaurants closedon Sundays, saying employees needed timeto spend with their families.

Pasco County property values grew byabout $1.1 billion in 2015, according to taxestimates released by the Pasco CountyProperty Appraiser’s Office.

That’s about 5.2 percent higher than thecurrent tax roll and shows acceleratedgrowth, compared to the previous steadygrowth of 4 percent, year to year.

Much of the increase is being fueled bynearly $685 million in new residential andcommercial construction.

The southern half of Pasco, particularlyalong the State Road 54/State Road 56 corri-dor is driving the growth, said Wade Barber,chief deputy at Pasco County PropertyAppraiser’s office.

“I think it will continue to be so,” he said.“Nothing up north is really going gang-busters yet.”

County records reflect the rising values.Tampa Premium Outlets, which opened

with more than 90 stores in October 2015,currently is valued at about $98 million. Ayear earlier with only vacant land to assess,the county pegged the property’s taxablevalue at nearly $12 million.

Lowe’s on State Road 54 in Lutz jumpedfrom about $1.8 million in taxable value in2015 to about $8.8 million now, recordsshow. The home improvement store openedin April 2015.

More new housing construction is onthe way, including Bexley Ranch in Odessaand Union Station in Wesley Chapel. FloridaHospital Center Ice Complex in WesleyChapel is expected to open in October.

The upward trend in valuations couldcontinue, but Ward cautioned that state-im-posed caps on increases play a role inholding values down.

State law limits increases in valuations tono higher than 10 percent for commercial,nonresidential properties, and no more than3 percent for homesteaded properties.

“It really holds you to the 5 percentrange without new construction,” Barbersaid.

Overall, the boost in valuations spread to

Pasco’s cities as well.Estimated values and percentage increas-

es are: Zephyrhills, $609 million, a 1 percentincrease; Dade City, $265.7 million, a 2.1 per-cent increase; San Antonio, nearly $56million, a 3.2 percent increase; Port Richey,nearly $252 million, a .08 percent increase;and New Port Richey, $504 million, a .08percent increase.

The Town of St. Leo showed a modest in-crease of about $22,400 to an estimatedvalue of about $8.7 million. But, the town’sproperty values remain in the doldrumscompared to the nearly $10 million value in2014.

The town lost about 85 homes in theLake Jovita subdivision when Gov. RickScott signed a bill to de-annex the homes in2014. The homes were added to unincorpo-rated Pasco’s tax base.

Eden Shireen is making a name for her-self in the local music scene.

Thousands of YouTube views for hercover songs and the March release of herfive-song ‘Shadows’ EP (Extended Play) havemade the 20-year-old Land O’ Lakes singer-songwriter an up-and-coming artist.

Her popularity has been steadily increas-ing since she became a 2015 FloridaGRAMMY Showcase semifinalist, thathelped to propel her career.

Shireen, a 2014 graduate of Land O’ LakesHigh School, describes her musical style as a“clash between pop, indie and folk.”

That unique style was formed during herhigh school years, when she was heavily in-volved in her school’s choir and theaterprograms.

“I was about 14 or 15 when I started towrite short stories and poems, and then Igot involved in musical theater...and I waslike, ‘Oh, my poems are literally just songs.’Then I started the whole writing process,and it was great,” Shireen said. “I really foundmy voice through acting and realized, ‘Wow,I love doing this.’”

Listening to alternative bands likeBleachers, Of Monsters and Men, The 1975and First Aid Kit were major influences dur-ing her formative high school years whenshe started creating music.

“I started to not just listen to what wason the radio,” she said. “Being a musician,you want to find what’s going to inspire youthe most, so I really just dove into Pandora(Internet Radio) and Spotify, and any differ-ent kind of playlists I could find.”

She continued, “I always grew up listen-ing to great music in my house with myfamily. I knew who The Sundays and TheCranberries were before anybody else.”

As she manages her burgeoning music ca-reer, Shireen is working toward an associatedegree at Pasco-Hernando State College, be-fore she relocates to Orlando to enroll in theUniversity of Central Florida’s EntertainmentManagement degree program.

She plays a lot of shows in Tampa, includ-ing the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino,but Orlando appears to be more ideal loca-tion for generating more buzz about herwork.

“Land O’ Lakes and Tampa do not havethe kind of music scene that I knew how tojump into when I first started getting intomusic, and the Orlando music scene ismuch younger—the teen crowd, teenbands, early 20s bands,” she said.

Meanwhile, Shireen is working with localvenues on an EP release show around mid-June, and then plans to embark on a musictour throughout the state.

Someday, Shireen hopes to be able to cre-ate a full-length album. For the time being,though, she’s content with sharing hermusic through short EPs.

“The cool thing about writing EPs is you’rereally developing your sound, developing sto-ries that you want to tell,” Shireen explained.“You’re building an audience and you kind ofcreate a feeling on longing — people wantmore, people are going to connect with youon one level. Writing a record is financially alittle bit of a hit with studio time, and I wantto find the right people that can really helpme craft my sound even more.”

Jotting down lyrics and creating music isa constant for the young artist, whethershe’s in the recording studio, relaxing athome, or even out shopping with friends.

“Making music for me is a relief of somekind. It’s the most satisfying feeling onceyou finish a song and you’re like, ‘Wow, I re-ally believe in this’...and other people aregoing to relate to this. It’s a very powerfulfeeling knowing that you can impact peoplein what hopes to be a very positive way.”

Despite Shireen’s eclectic sound and hergrowing popularity locally, she still feels thatone of the biggest challenges ahead is devel-oping more of a widespread audience.

“There’s a lot of music out there, there’sa lot of talented musicians, and there’s a lotof very powerful people who have thepower to change your life if they hear you.

But, having those people hear you, and hav-ing people really turn their heads and lookat you, sometimes it can be the biggest chal-lenge, because there is so much music allover the Internet.

“It is just a challenge being heard.”But, that challenge doesn’t discourage

her from living out her dream, and encour-aging other aspiring artists to do the same.

“Never discredit that little voice inside ofyou that says to do it,” she said. “Believe inwhat you write...and don’t let anybody elsediminish what you created.

“If you want to become an artist, justhave that self-belief and that passion inknowing whatever you create is original,and you have the power to make it some-thing.”

every song is going to have a different un-dertone to it, but I’m definitely pop. I like tosay I’m a little bit indie and folk becausemy voice isn’t all completely pop — withthe way the inflections are in some of thesongs, so I think it’s a clash between pop,indie and folk.”

whether it’s a little bird that we see takinga bath in a puddle, or the wind blowing ina certain way. ...I just enjoy believing insomething that’s so much bigger than my-self that isn’t exactly tangible. It’s the idea Ican grow it into whatever I choose...and Ihave the power to manifest it in a waywhere other people are going to under-stand.”

“I started writing it in the end of 2013and I finished the record in June 2015, but Itook a little time to figure out how I want-ed to come out with it — what the titletrack should be, how I wanted to structurethe photo shoot, all of that. For all of thesongs and the singles— and how am Igoing to work to design it — I really tookmy time on the after-effects of writing theEP. But, it did take about two years to writethe record, and about six months afterthat to get to a good place to put mysongs out there.”

“It’s a single from the record, and I likethe message of the song. I had written thewhole album from a sad place, and I wascoming out of a very toxic situation withsomeone. For me, the whole idea of therecord and the title being ‘Shadows’ is...theidea that it’s darkness, it’s hidden, you’replaying with shadows and you’re hiding —all of these different kind of themes areplaying throughout the whole record. But,when you get to the song “Stick Around” atthe very end, it’s about feeling empow-ered. ...Ending with that song definitelyleaves an impression on how you can de-velop, even in your darkest moments.”

To begin to appreciate the suddenand shocking loss of Joseph NealHancock — legacy grove owner,

ubiquitous volunteer, Southern historianand, poignantly, amateur bicycling enthusi-ast — you begin here, a half-mile and thensome from Townsend House Cemetery.

Here, if you weren’t among the earliestarrivals, is where you park, on the edge ofanother of Pasco County’s narrow, unpavedroads, among the four-wheel-drive SUVs andpickup trucks. So very many pickup trucks,signaling something else important: This is afuneral for a working man.

And so, despite the morning’s risingheat, you slip into your sport jacket — re-spect must be paid — and strike out aroundthe bend, kicking up dust in pursuit of theold final resting place for some of the eastcounty’s most notable pioneer families:Johnstons, Eilands, Bellamys and, by thedozens, Hancocks. So very many Hancocks.

It was inevitable, then, Joe’s earthly re-mains would wind up here, on this shadedhill overlooking gentle pastureland andsparkling Middle Lake beyond, beneath thecanopy of moss-draped oaks. It’s just thetiming that was all off.

Joe Hancock, the son of the son of the

son of farmers, was just 57 years old — thenew 35, as every baby boomer knows —and hardy. We mentioned the bicycle. Withcycling pal Jim Pavek pushing him and theirfamilies’ scalloping adventures waiting atthe other end, he could make Steinhatchee,a 140-mile trip, in two days. He’d beenknown to pedal to North Carolina and be-yond.

And, he thought nothing of putting in aquick 10 miles most any morning beforework … which is what he was doing thatfateful Saturday at the end of May whenthings went tragically awry: DesireeMichelle Nathe, 20, state-champion highjumper, cresting a hill on Lake Iola Road inher Hyundai Accent and finding Hancock inher path, knocking him off his GermanFocus bike and into eternity.

He leaves behind Jane, his first, foremostand lifetime love, three sons — Jimmy, 29,his business partner; Jackson, 18, who gradu-ated high school Friday; and Jeb, 11 — andcountless scores of friends, most of whomappear to have stories that begin, “You can’tput this in the newspaper.”

They gathered a dozen deep around asimple maple casket last Wednesday morn-ing, serenaded by nature’s summer sounds:the electric buzz of cicadas, cheeping cardi-nals, cooing doves, the mournful cry of adistant loon — all God’s creatures forming aproper soundtrack behind the brief narra-tive of an outdoorsman’s life as told by BillScaife, who pastors Wilderness Lake Churchin far north Land O’ Lakes.

Hancock didn’t lend, Scaife noted. Hegave, because relationships were more im-portant to him than balanced ledgers. Hedidn’t laugh or roll his eyes when a subur-banite new to country life insisted onburying a week-old calf with a blanket and abottle she’d used in a hopeless attempt tokeep it alive.

And, not much more than a week or so

before, on a moonlight tour of their grove inthe company golf cart with Jane by his side,he spoke as a philosopher about divineblessings, regrets — he had none — andtheir life together. It was all good, he said.

The lad who once declared his intentionto become “a legend in his own time” hadgrown into a man of achievement, generosi-ty, refection and perspective.

None of this is to suggest that anyone be-sides his Creator would have suggested JoeHancock’s work in this mortal realm waseven remotely complete. He was, it bears re-peating, only 57 and, by every account,vibrant.

There’s no telling what might have ac-complished with another 30 years — whichisn’t out of the question, based on the lifes-pans of the other Hancocks buried up onthe hill — but even if it was only 30 years ofadoring Jane, doting on grandchildren andinhaling the perfume of orange blossoms, sowhat?

Instead, we are left to grapple, prema-turely, with what he has bequeathed: yetanother sad lesson about bicyclists lured toeast Pasco’s tight, curvy, hilly back roads andmotorists who happen upon them unex-pectedly.

“I don’t know why,” says Pavek,Hancock’s riding pal, “but I just think some-thing good is going to come from this, forJoe’s sake.”

What that something might be, Pavekcan’t say for sure. Adding broad shoulders tothe roads that attract cyclists from aroundthe region would cost millions the countydoesn’t have. Pasco’s emerging trail plandoesn’t stress the hilly routes cyclists love.And, even Pavek says there is more than ade-quate signage to alert drivers about thelikely presence of bike riders.

What, then? Maybe people will be moremindful now, he says. This is more likely theephemeral wish of a bereaved friend, but

within it is the nugget of an opportunity.To make alertness stick, a perpetual re-

minder would be helpful. And, if thatreminder is low-cost, so much the better.

So how about this: Lake Iola Road, wherea good man reared his boys, loved Jane,caused to prosper the family business andmet his untimely end, gets an honorary sec-ond name: Joseph N. Hancock MemorialHighway.

And, near the spot of the crash, a suitableplaque, affixed to a German Focus. So we re-member, always, and drive, or cycle,accordingly.

Family fun day nets $11,000 The third annual Law Enforcement Officers Family Fun Day had a record attendance of morethan 600 and raised more than $11,000 for the Pasco County fallen officers fund. Tom Dobies,owner of Dobies Funeral Homes, added a personal donation of $5,000, to bring the total tomore than $16,000. The day is dedicated to and recognizes Pasco County law enforcement andtheir families, and featured rides, demonstrations, exhibits and food. Since 1949, Florida has required cemeteries to trust a percentage of propertysales into an approved perpetual care trust fund. Many customers of Universal Hair Studioin Lutz have been coming to the salon forstylish haircuts for over 10 years – since itopened in 2005.

“We have so many loyal customers to bethankful for,” said Cheryl Lynn, owner/stylistat the salon. “Some days it’s hard to believewe’ve been here for 11 years.”

It wasn’t long before Cheryl openedUniversal Hair Studio, buying an office con-dominium at St. Rd. 54 and Foggy RidgeRoad, located behind Bay Breeze Car Wash.

“It’s a great spot that’s centrally locatedfor our customers who live in Lutz, Land O’Lakes and Wesley Chapel,” said Cheryl.

She named her new salon Universal HairStudio to communicate her goal of providing

hair services for people of all ethnicities.“My salon has been multicultural since

day one,” says Cheryl. “I called it Universalbecause is doesn’t matter what gender, orrace, someone is. We are all trained stylistsexperienced at working with all types ofhair.”

Cheryl explained that her customers areAfrican American, Muslim, Puerto Rican,Caucasian, Asian and Caribbean Islanders.The studio also cuts hair for men, especiallyretired men, and welcomes walk-ins.

Caum also would like to see more of thevisitors bed down for the night in PascoCounty.

“I’ve got the report from NDP Lacrosse.About 20 percent of the participants stayedin Pasco and 80 percent stayed inHillsborough,” Caum said, that’s a 20 percentincrease in the number of visitors choosingHillsborough hotels, instead of staying inPasco.

“We had a number of our hoteliers thathad raised their price up,” the tourism man-ager said. Families that may have preferredto stay in Pasco were priced out and stayedin Hillsborough hotels instead, he said.

“We’re going to partner with the hotels alot closer,” Caum said.

“Just because you have a great eventcoming in, you can’t gouge your partici-pants. We’re hoping that they don’t do thatagain this year,” Caum said.

There was a time, back in 2012, when

the lacrosse tournament’s future in PascoCounty was uncertain. Back then, the tour-nament was being courted by IMGAcademies, an elite athletic training facilityin Bradenton.

But, Pasco upped the ante in their bid tokeep the tournament and were able to se-cure it for four more years.

This time, the county signed a two-yeardeal with a third-year option, Caum said.

The county didn’t want to tie the con-tract to the Wesley Chapel District Park andthe fields at Wesley Chapel High School fora longer period, Caum said.

“We may have a new field complex, de-pending on what rolls out with the sportscomplex,” Caum said, referring to PascoCounty’s ongoing efforts to open a newsports complex.

Regardless of where the event is, howev-er, Caum said the county wants to continuethe involvement of the Wesley ChapelAthletic Association.

“We could not do it without them,”Caum said. “They’re the ones who provideall of the volunteers, and do all of the con-cessions and stuff.”

“That’s another reason that the NDPwanted to come back, because of the rela-tionship they have (with the Wesley ChapelAthletic Association) — they have that vol-unteer base,” Caum said.

“Pasco County’s Board of CountyCommissioners, its Tourist DevelopmentCouncil and the Wesley Chapel AthleticAssociation have provided tremendous sup-port to the event for nearly a decade,” JoshGross, NDP’s vice president of business op-erations, said in a news release announcingthe two-year deal.

Getting rid of thousands of wet tons ofsludge each year – also known as biosolids– isn’t as easy as flushing a toilet and watch-ing it drain out of sight —beyond anyone’ssmell.

Pasco County is looking toward newtechnology and biosolids managementcompany, Merrell Bros. Inc., to deliver a so-lution.

Pasco County commissioners heard apresentation during a May 17 workshop re-garding a proposed facility that can turnsludge into dry fertilizer that can be sold.

Consultants from CDM explained howthe system would work to commissioners.

Merrell would construct and operate thefacility, which would be owned by thecounty and located at the Shady Hills solidwaste complex.

County officials estimate a cost savingsof as much as $750,000 a year based on aservice agreement with Merrell.Construction costs would not exceed $13million. The facility could be online withintwo years.

The Indiana-based company is the sec-ond to seek the county’s business. In 2011,commissioners selected Earth, Wind & FireTechnologies to handle the county’s sludge,but the company folded before negotiatinga contract.

Earth, Wind & Fire planned to create asynthetic diesel fuel from the sludge.

Pasco annually ends up with about23,000 tons of sludge that fills about 1,100dump trucks, according to Anthony Pevec,

environmental engineer with CDM.Much of it is composted or hauled to

landfills in Georgia. But, some also goes toSt. Cloud, where the largest bio-landfill incentral Florida is located. Tipping fees thererose about 13 percent in the last year, ac-cording to data from CDM.

Pevec told commissioners that gettingrid of sludge is expensive and is gettingmore so as state regulations limit availablesites. Counties worried about protectingclean water also are restricting new sitepermits, including Pasco.

According to CDM, St. Petersburg’s dis-posal method is estimated to cost about$80 million.

Nearly four years ago, HillsboroughCounty spent more than $25 million on aprocess that couldn’t eliminate the odorissue.

Merrell is proposing a 15-year agree-ment with Pasco, with three, 5-yearrenewals, according to county records. Theproposed facility would have a 50,000-toncapacity. In addition to Pasco’s sludge,Merrell anticipates contracting with othercounties to treat and convert their productto fertilizer for sale.

But Michael Carballa, the county’s utili-ties engineering director, said, “Our sludgealways has priority.”

The facility would have a greenhouse“pod,” a pasteurization building and anodor control system. A pilot program test-ed the procedure by using some of Pasco’ssludge.

It passed the test.“We wanted a high level of odor con-

trol,” said Pevec.

SAINT LEO ATHLETE CLAIMSFIFTH AT NATIONALS

Saint Leo University sophomore ColettRampf finished fifth in the 3000-meter stee-plechase finals at the 2016 NCAA Division IIOutdoor Track and Field Championships onMay 27 at IMG Academy.

Rampf posted a career-best time of10:23.86, earning All-America honors withher fifth-place showing. Her finals time wasslightly under two seconds faster than thetime she posted in the meet’s preliminaries.

Rampf, who became Saint Leo’s firstcross-country All-American earlier this sea-

son, now becomes the Lions’ first track All-American as well.

“I could not be prouder of myself and allthe hard work it took to get here,” Rampfsaid in a release. “I did not expect to do thiswell because it was my first time runningthe steeplechase back-to-back within 24hours. The steeplechase is a very tough,competitive race, so it very hard on my legs,and hard to stay mentally strong and pushwith whatever is left.”

Rampf is a native of Premintz, Germany.

FORMER STEINBRENNERATHLETE HONORED

Kevin Merrell, a former standout onSteinbrenner High School’s baseball team andcurrent shortstop on the University of SouthFlorida’s baseball team, has been named a firstteam All-American Athletic Conference selec-tion by the conference’s coaches. Merrell, asophomore, leads USF in batting average(.309) and on-base percentage (.405), and isthird on the team in stolen bases (16). Merrellwas a four-year letter winner at Steinbrenner,and batted .462 during his senior year. He wasalso a standout track athlete and currentlyholds the school’s 100-meter dash record at10.6 seconds, which he set in 2014.

The Land O’ Lakes Gators AthleticsFoundation inducted five new members tothe school’s athletics Hall of Fame during adinner ceremony on May 24.

The inductees for the 2016 class were:the 2002-2003 girls soccer team, which wona state title; Jerry English, a longtime varsitysoftball coach; Lt. Col. Rhett Hierlmeier, astandout dual-sport athlete; DianneMcClendon, a key member of the Land O’Lakes softball team during the late ‘70s; andPhil Teston, the school’s first player drafted into the Major League Baseball.

The ceremony marked the school’s fourthHall of Fame induction class, which began in2013 after the Gators Athletics Foundationwas established as a 501c3 nonprofit organi-zation.

The foundation’s purpose is to “raisefunds through donations and fundraisingevents for the direct benefit of the athleticprograms at Land O’ Lakes High School.”

Antonio Tarver, a former World BoxingCouncil light heavyweight champion, wasthe keynote speaker for the ceremony, whichdrew about 180 people.

Jerry Brewster, vice president of theGators Athletics Foundation, estimates that$12,000 to $15,000 was raised, several thou-sand dollars less than in previous years.

“The first three years we raised about$20,000 per year and so now the foundationhas over $60,000 in there, but this past year,we just didn’t get as many sponsors as wehad in prior years so...it was a little lightfrom what we would’ve liked to have,”Brewster said.

Funds raised through the foundation arecurrently being allocated to build an athletic

field house at the school, perhaps within thenext five years.

Likely a $1 million to $1.5 million project,a field house would be the first step in up-grading the school’s athletic facilities in aneffort to put it on par with other largeschools throughout Tampa area. Ideally, fea-tures inside the field house could includeboys and girls locker rooms, coaches’ roomsand a training area, Brewster said.

“We’ve got a vision of what we’d want itto look like,” the foundation’s vice presidentsaid. “We want to put an actual Hall of Fame(in) the field house, so when kids walk to the

gym everyday, they have to go through theHall of Fame; we want it to be somethingwhere kids can be inspired.”

In addition to nearly $70,000 in the foun-dation’s coffers, there’s an additional$150,000 commitment from a few of thefoundation’s board members to help facili-tate a field house project.

The organization also is in discussionswith the Pasco County School Board to pos-sibly create a joint partnership to spearheada new athletic facility.

Meanwhile, in the next few months, theathletics foundation will deliberate candi-dates for next year’s Hall of Fame class.Typically, each class features a coach or ad-ministrator, a lifetime achievement award,one female athlete and two male athletes.

Both athletic prowess and the individual’scharacter are taken into account in evaluat-ing Hall of Fame candidates, Brewster said.

FHSAA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RETIRES

Florida High School Athletic Associationexecutive director Dr. James “Roger” Dearingannounced his retirement last week.Dearing, who held the role for eight years,will step down once a new hire is made.The FHSAA’s Board of Directors will begin anationwide search after the next boardmeeting June 13 and June 14. In a press re-lease, Dearing said it was “simply time” toretire.

“After consulting with my family and myclosest of friends, I feel it is in the best inter-est of all if I step aside, and give someoneelse the absolute privilege and honor of tak-ing on this role,” he said.

Under Dearing’s leadership, the FHSAAreduced membership fees to $25 perschool. He also helped steer media partner-ships with Bright House Sports Networkand the NFHS Network, making champi-onship games available for viewing online.Moreover, student-athlete participation inthe FHSAA’s 32 sports increased by about33 percent since he was named FHSAA’s ex-ecutive director.

Prior to working for the FHSAA, Dearingserved as Manatee County Superintendentfrom 2003 to 2009.

At a place that can trace its his-tory back to the 1880s, SaintAnthony Catholic Schoolmarked another milestone on

June 3 with a ceremony to bless the com-pletion of a renovated building constructedin 1922.

It was the second time in two years thatSaint Anthony Catholic School paused to cel-ebrate the completion of a constructionproject.

The first event occurred on Feb. 5, 2015,when the Rev. Robert N. Lynch, Bishop of theDiocese of St. Petersburg, presided over thededication of the school’s new building. Thatbuilding, designed to architecturally matchthe existing building, was funded throughthe Diocese’s Forward in Faith CapitalCampaign.

At last week’s event, Abbott IsaacCamacho, of Saint Leo Abbey, presided overthe ceremony to bless the school’s newlyrenovated 1922 building. The Saint AnthonyParish community is covering the cost of the$1.8 million project.

Those gathered at last week’s ceremonyexpressed gratitude for the education theschool provides.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Peter Quinn wasamong those attending the ceremony. Hisson, Gabriel, just graduated from the school,and his twin daughters, Faith and Grace, areseventh-graders.

“We got here three years ago. This is apearl of joy for us,” Quinn said. He noted thathe searched all of the Diocese, including St.Petersburg, Clearwater and Brandon, beforechoosing to enroll his children at SaintAnthony.

“I wanted a place where my parish lifeand my kids’ school life would be one andthe same.

“When I found this place, with the sistersin residence, that was it.

“The surrounding community is just sosupportive,” Quinn said.

Leo Brand and Kyle Christmas, both mem-bers of the Knights of Columbus, were there,dressed in their full regalia.

They came to present the school with agift: A pole and a stand, to hold the school’sbanner.

“They’ve always borrowed ours for years,”Brand said. So, the Knights of Columbus SanAntonio Council 1768 decided to purchaseone for the school, he said.

Christmas noted that one of his familymembers helped build the school decadesago. “He’s got his name on one of the bricksup on the top of the roof,” he said.

Christmas said he’s pleased to see that theschool is building for the future.

“It’s nice to see that they are expandingand that they’re getting busy enough to ex-pand, that people are taking advantage of aCatholic education,” Christmas said.

Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schraderwas at the event — but not in his role as anelected leader. He has closer ties to thechurch and school.

“I’m an alumnus. It’s my parish. Mychurch. It’s a great part of our community. Myparents were actually married in the church,”Schrader said.

The renovation of the 1922 school build-ing marks a proud moment for the parishand school, Schrader said.

“The community just came together. Theyrecognized the importance of a Catholic edu-cation,” Schrader said.

Leigh DiMaria has three children at theschool.

“I love the fact that they were able to re-

store a lot of the old elements,” DiMaria said.She’s pleased that her children, Faith,

Vincent and Nolan, attend Saint Anthony, andthat her family is part of the school’s commu-nity.

“The community around here, the sup-port, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’samazing,” DiMaria said.

Abbott Camacho presided over the cere-mony, but others took part, as well. Rev. GarryWelsh, the current pastor, Sister AliceOttapurackal, the current principal, and SisterRoberta Bailey, the Prioress at Holy NameMonastery and former principal of theschool, also offered remarks.

Students took part, too. Hannah Fox, ledthe assembly in “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You,”Lindsay Golliday read a selection from scrip-ture, and Aiden Fox and Adeline Shiver werealtar servers.

Abbott Camacho reminded those gath-ered that “one of the characteristics of usBenedictines (who founded the school) is towelcome the other, as Christ, no matter whothe other is. To see in them, the image ofChrist.

“It’s not about the teachers. It’s not aboutthe good reputation of the school. It’s aboutthe other. Can we see Christ in the other, nomatter their background? If we see in them,Christ, things start to change for good,”Abbott Camacho said.

Sister Bailey recalled Saint AnthonyCatholic School’s rich history, and noted thatit has faced some tough times.

“We owe a great deal of credit to the pas-tors that were in this area. There was a daywhen the principal and the bookkeeperwould come up with budget, based on thetuition that we knew we could collect. And,whatever we thought we couldn’t collect,we gave that debt to the pastors, and they fig-ured out how to support the school,” SisterBailey said.

But through prayer, God’s blessings, thehelp of the Diocese, and the generosity of theparish and community, there’s now a newschool building and a renovated building,Sister Ottapurackal said.

“Our school looks beautiful, and it is readyfor 21st century learning. We are proud ofhow it came out, because of God’s blessingand people’s help,” the principal said.

• Keep your computers and mobile de-vices up to date. Having the latest securitysoftware, web browser, and operating sys-tem are the best defenses against viruses,malware, and other online threats. • Setstrong passwords. A strong password is atleast eight characters long and includes a

mix of upper and lowercase letters, num-bers and special characters.

• Watch out for phishing scams. Thesescams use fraudulent emails and websites totrick users into disclosing private accountor login information. Do not click on linksor open any attachments or pop-up screensfrom unfamiliar sources. (Forward phishingemails to the Federal Trade Commission(FTC) at [email protected]).

• Keep personal information personal.Hackers can use social media profiles to fig-ure out your passwords and answer thosesecurity questions in the password resettools. Lock down your privacy settings andavoid posting things like birthdays, address-es, mother’s maiden name and so on. Bewary of requests to connect from strangers.

• Secure your internet connection.Always protect your home wireless networkwith a password. When connecting to pub-lic Wi-Fi networks, be cautious about theinformation you send over it.

• Shop safely. Before shopping online,make sure the website uses secure technol-

ogy. When you are at the checkout screen,verify that the web address begins withhttps. Also, check to see if a tiny locked pad-lock symbol appears on the page.

• Read the site’s privacy policies. Thesepolicies tell you how the site protects thepersonal information it collects. If you don’tsee or understand a site’s privacy policy,consider doing business elsewhere.
