Wendell Speer is a prolific note-taker.Paper and pen are ready at hand.“You’ll get a million ideas wherever you

go. If you don’t write them down, you’llnever remember them all,” he said.

Notes on slips of paper, written down inquiet moments on walks in the woods orin the hushed quiet of the local library, laidthe trail that led to “Simon Peppercorn, Login to Magic Space.”

Speer published his fantasy tale of theyoung wizard apprentice, SimonPeppercorn, more than eight years ago onhis own. A Polish publisher translated thestory and introduced it to a young readingaudience in that country about three yearsago.

About 2,000 copies sold in Poland,Speer said.

The American version is available atAmazon.com and BarnesAndNoble.com.Copies also are available at the HughEmbry Branch Library in Dade City.

Speer is at work currently on a series of“first-chapter” books including one about amagic pencil box and a young girl whobrings it to life. He hopes to find an agentand publisher for his newest creations.

But Speer said he is realistic about hischances.

“I know I’m the underdog,” he said. “Idon’t have the contacts. I don’t know peo-ple who know people.”

What he does have, Speer said, is a pas-sion for writing that began with a sixthgrade classroom assignment and a mysterystory. By age 18, he knew that he wanted towrite a book.

He followed his heart to the fantasyworld and found Simon Peppercorn.

The book follows 12-year-old Simon onhis journey into “Magic Space” in quest ofadventure and a special crystal with pow-ers to save him from being transformedinto a werewolf. His journey begins in atypical small town in the real world, known as “Hardspace.”

Once he enters an alternate realm,Simon learns he is a novice wizard who

must confront dragons, werewolves, wicked witches, goblins and trolls.

The target audience is children ages 9and older. As film, it would be a visual treatand even has theme park potential, Speersaid.

Except for the Harry Potter series byJ.K. Rowling, Speer said there were fewother books about wizardry. It seemed anatural to find his own niche with youngreaders.

“I read all the Harry Potter books,” hesaid. “I was enthralled by them.”

But Simon Peppercorn is different, saidSpeer who cites other influences such asthe King Arthur tales, Polish folklore andMark Twain.

“Harry Potter is very much a mysterybook,” Speer said. “Simon Peppercorn is anadventure story. It’s like Huck Finn withmagic.”

Speer has had his own adventures and abit of wanderlust.

He grew up in Dade City and graduatedfrom Pasco High School.

A scholarship took him to FloridaAtlantic University in Boca Raton, where heearned a degree in mass communications.

That wasn’t his first choice as a major.“I had always had an interest in film,” he

said. But the university didn’t have a filmprogram, so he settled for classes in filmtheory.

He also landed a nine-week film produc-tion internship. He helped out when actorPaul Newman taped a public service an-nouncement and again when Newmantaped a special segment for a televisionshow honoring actor and director JohnHuston.

One summer, in the midst of his collegestudies, Speer took a trip to Europe wherehe met his future wife. She was a native ofPoland and for the next 20 years or so,Speer lived much of the time in his wife’scountry.

At the time, Poland was a Communiststate under martial law. Later, the Solidarityuprising brought a revolution and the endof Communism.

“The people had a special spirit aboutthem at that time,” he said. “That was trulyamazing.”

His son was born in Warsaw in 1984.Speer learned Polish and got work in

film production, largely hired by foreign

film companies that chose Poland as abackdrop for their movies.

When his book was published inPoland, Speer appeared on televisionshows to promote sales. He also visitedlocal Polish libraries.

“I was a big hit with the 10-year-oldPolish kids,” he said.

In the early 2000s, Speer returned toDade City and worked as a substituteteacher, and also for two years as a childprotective investigator for the PascoCounty Sheriff’s Office.

He works part-time now at a local homeimprovement store.

In his spare time, Speer keeps dreamingup new stories and maybe imagining moreSimon Peppercorn adventures.

“I plan eventually to do a real series,” hesaid. “There are possibilities for many spin-offs, with many characters. I have the samedreams as every creative person.”

Spanish moss is an icon, symbolic of lazysouthern days.

It sways in the breeze, welcoming travel-ers to Florida.

Its tendrils trail, acting as a beacon to thoselooking for adventure in the Sunshine State.

But for some Florida residents, Spanishmoss is not always such a welcome sight —especially if it’s hanging from our oaks, cy-press trees and ornamental shrubs.

That’s because Spanish moss is oftenmisunderstood.

Spanish moss is a bromeliad and not amoss at all.

It’s a perennial plant closely related tothe pineapple.

Spanish moss is an epiphyte, whichmeans it grows on other plants, but it isn’t aparasite.

Epiphytes gather nutrients from the airand even from the dust settling on the sur-face of their host plant. Spanish mossliterally catches moisture and nutrientsusing tiny scales along its leaf surface and isquite drought tolerant.

When residents notice Spanish moss, oreven ball moss, on plants that seem to be indecline, many automatically assume that theSpanish moss is the problem.

If fact, what you’re seeing is the moss in-habiting “easy” areas on the plants that arealready struggling due to some other issue. The Spanish moss (and ball moss) isn’t aparasite or a disease, so it rarely ever causesa problem.

Spanish moss doesn’t have roots, so itcannot “hook” itself into plants – it simplyhangs on by wrapping itself around a struc-ture and using it for support.

When a plant is struggling, the canopywill often thin exposing the Spanish mossthat’s hanging on the plant to more sun-light. That causes the moss to grow morevigorously.

Hence, it appears that Spanish moss iscausing a problem, but it really isn’t.

So, Spanish moss is not killing trees. On rare occasions, moss growth can be

heavy enough to shade the leaves on treescausing photosynthesis to the host plant toslow, and that might result in slowergrowth.

But a healthy tree will outgrow themoss.

With heavy moss accumulation – theadded weight can break branches.

So, it may be necessary to remove ex-cess moss to keep limbs from breaking andcausing damage to property, people or ani-mals.

If you wish to remove the moss, keep inmind that it will grow back. While it’s usual-ly best to have an arborist remove the moss, you can remove it by hand – just be carefulnot to fall or injure yourself.

Most of the time it simply isn’t neces-sary to remove the moss.

In fact, many birds build nests fromSpanish moss, and other animals use it tobuild shelters. So, removing the moss canhave a negative impact on wildlife.

Historically, Spanish moss has been usedfor everything from stuffing in cushionsand mattresses to home insulation. Today,it’s more commonly found in floral and or-namental arrangements.

If the moss hanging from your plantsbothers you, carefully remove it.

The rest of us will simply enjoy theview.

For more information about Spanishmoss, call the UF/IFAS Pasco ExtensionOffice at (352) 518-0156.

Dr. Whitney Elmore, UF/IFAS PascoCounty Extension Director and UrbanHorticulture Agent III.

This column was adapted from B.Larson, et al, Florida’s Native Bromeliads(CIR 1466), Department of Wildlife Ecologyand Conservation.

PHOTO COURTESY OF WHITNEY C. ELMORESpanish moss is often misunderstood. Some people think the perennial plant is a par-asite. But the truth is, this perennial is actually a bromeliad and rarely causes damageto its host plants.

There was an excitement in the air on aTuesday afternoon, as people gathered in thereception area in the building on EastChapman Road in Lutz.

People had trekked from such places atGeorgia and Texas, Wesley Chapel and SouthTampa, Carrollwood and Lutz, to be there.

They wanted to hear Gladys Kuhn —Gobby, to those who know her — talk abouther first book.

It wasn’t a typical setting for a book sign-ing, as this one was at Horizon Bay, aretirement home at 414 Chapman Road East.

And the author making her literary debutwas 94 years old.

She didn’t read dramatic passages fromher book, which is simply called “Gobby.”

Instead, she shared recollections from apast that is chock full of fun and adventure.

At the front of her 105-page book, Gobbyoffers this disclaimer: “To whoever reads thisbook: All the facts, dates, times and detailsmay not be completely accurate. I am gettinga little forgetful at 94.”

The book, which is dedicated to her chil-dren, tells the story of a woman whoremembers when horses delivered the fami-ly’s milk, a card in the window let the iceman know how much ice to leave andmovies cost a nickel each.

She recalls a time long before television, cellphones and computers.

Gobby grew up in Chicago during theDepression.

“Sometimes the food on the table waspretty skimpy,” she writes. “Mom would makeBrown Flour Soup, where she would brownthe flour and butter in a fry pan, then slowlyadd water and onions. I hated it because ithad onions in them, and I didn’t like them asa child.”

But she adds, “We always had homemadebread with it to fill the tummy and, some-times, Mom would put a little sugar andcanned milk on the bread if you didn’t likethe soup.”

The book recounts her family’s life, as shewas growing up — the jobs her father held, the homes they lived in and how they hadfun.

She recalls getting a job in an embroideryfactory after high school, to help pay for herdancing lessons.

That’s when she met her friend, RubyRyan, and the two of them joined a show thatwas heading to New York.

“We played all of the big theaters,”Gobby’s book recounts. “We interviewedwith the Rockettes and got hired, but the warstarted and my brother was called to service,so my Mother made me come home.”

The book also follows Gobby’s marriageto Bob Kuhn and the family they had togeth-er.

It tells tales of her life as a Girl Scoutleader and the adventures she shared withher scouts.

And, she recounts the family’s life on thelake in Odessa, and the good times she hadwhile sailing.

Throughout the book, her love of life is ev-ident. In fact, she concludes many portions inher memoir with this simple, declarative sen-tence: “Life is good.”

During her book chat, Gobby’s eyes lit upas she recalled the happy times that she’shad.

But she also told those gathered that she’shad her dark times, and for a period of timeshe had wanted to die.

But that was before she met RaymondParadis, who also lives at Horizon Bay, shesays, and when she mentions his name, shebecomes joyful again.

Those gathered to celebrate Gobby’s bookrelease were delighted to be there.

“I think it’s pretty remarkable. My motherhas always done remarkable things,” said herdaughter, Lynda Rix, who lives in Lutz.

Her daughter, Kathi Traywick, of Ellijay,Georgia, helped Gobby organize her book. Sodid Melissa Horvath, now a graduate student, who was volunteering at Horizon Bay.

Susan Cuellar, of Carrollwood, helped hermom to get started on the book.

“A lot of times, as people age, we losesome of our hobbies,” Cuellar said. “I waslooking for a new thing to kind of keep mombusy. Something for her to do. I had an oldcomputer. She was having a hard time writ-ing. I thought she could type.

“And, it turned into a book,” Cuellar said.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Your porch, deck, yard and patio are ex-tensions of your living space -- and it’simportant to maintain these areas for themto be in tip-top shape.

Here are some helpful tips to get thesespaces summer-ready.

OrganizeSet yourself up for a season of better gar-

dening, yard work, tinkering and auto repairby organizing your shed or garage. You’ll bemore inclined to do these necessary taskswhen you don’t have to search around inorder to get started.

Do an inventory of your tools. Throw outrusty or broken items that are irreparable.Perform routine maintenance on equipmentand tools. Then organize your equipment ina systematic way that makes the most sensefor you, making use of vertical storage sys-tems that take the best advantage of thespace you have.

Deep CleanIt’s a tough world out there. Things get

dirty, messy and stained, and sometimes agarden hose, soap and elbow grease justaren’t enough -- especially after months ofneglect. Enter the pressure washer, whichcan aggressively blast things clean withwater jets pressurized up to75 times that ofa garden hose; or gently spray with lowerpressures for delicate cleaning.

Step up your cleaning of patio furniture, sidewalks and fencing with a light-duty pres-sure washer. For decks, patios, garage floors, siding and driveways, a medium-duty pres-sure washer can help save you time andenergy on clean-up jobs. Just be sure towear goggles and closed-toed shoes whenusing a pressure washer, and never operatethe machine in an enclosed area.

FRIENDLY SPACESReduce mosquitos by eliminating stand-

ing water from the yard. By performing a few key tasks, you can

prime your home’s outdoor spaces for a sea-son of gardening, entertaining, relaxing andsummer living.

Dr. Anahita Azharian is bringing safe,life-changing plastic surgery to the WesleyChapel area with Magnolia Plastic SurgeryCenter.

In August of 2014, Dr.Azharian moved back toTampa, her childhoodhome, to open her new prac-tice and be closer to family. She had earned a Masters ofPublic Health in InfectiousDiseases at University ofSouth Florida before leavingthe area 14 years ago formedical school at NovaSoutheastern UniversityCollege of OsteopathicMedicine in Fort Lauderdale.

Dr. Azharian’s residencyin General Surgery was completed at MercyCatholic Medical Center in Philadelphia, followed by a fellowship in Plastic andReconstructive Surgery at PhiladelphiaCollege of Osteopathic Medicine.

After her studies, Dr. Azharian worked inNew York City until moving back to theTampa area to open Magnolia PlasticSurgery Center.

Dr. Azharian enjoys owning her ownpractice for many reasons, but especiallybecause it allows her to set her own highstandards.

“Opening my own practice has been agood way to go by my own morals and val-ues, and to do things the way I feel is right,”she says.

Her highest priority, and most importantvalue, is patient safety. While Dr. Azharianacknowledges that any type of surgery comeswith some risk, she always informs herpatients if something is potentially danger-ous, and encourages them to look at alterna-tives.

“Patient education is closely tied to safe-ty,” said Dr. Azharian. “Many people whoseek plastic surgery are not always educatedabout what it really entails. While plasticsurgery is usually done for cosmetic reasons, the procedure is still a surgery and shouldalways be taken seriously.”

Honesty is another important value that

Dr. Azharian lives by, and she strives tomake sure that her patients are realisticabout what they’re going to look like afterthe surgery.

“We make sure patients have realisticexpectations so there are no surprises,” said

Dr. Azharian. “We never giveanyone false expectations.”

That doesn’t mean thatpatients don’t have amazingresults. “It means that patientsget what they actually needand want,” said Dr. Azharian.“We believe that everyone isdifferent, and that someoneelse’s results won’t necessarilybe yours. My joy comes fromfinding the right surgery forthe right patient, and thensetting the right expecta-tions.”

Magnolia Plastic Surgery isdifferent than other practices for many rea-sons, Dr. Azharian said, beginning with thefact that she is a woman.

“I can relate to what society expects of awoman, and to the changes in a woman’sbody as she ages,” she says. “Most of mypatients are women and I share many of thesame perspectives and experiences.”

Dr. Azharian also says her practice is dif-ferent because of the amount of time thatshe spends with her patients.

“I never rush people out the door andwant my patients to feel comfortable,” shesays. “I take time to listen so patients canfully explain what they want,” she said.

Magnolia Plastic Surgery Center workswith many breast cancer patients, manywhom are referred by Florida MedicalClinic.

Watching the progress and strength ofcancer patients has been especially gratify-ing for Dr. Azharian and her staff. Theyoften see patients from the start andthroughout their entire journey of treat-ments.

Dr. Azharian seeks to deepen the goodreputation of the Magnolia Plastic SurgeryCenter by valuing her patient’s safety, beinghonest about her results, and giving patientsthe best surgery that they can have. Herultimate goal is to do the best surgery shecan every single time.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Sometimes that deal you’re getting thatseems to be too good to be true is too goodto be true.

Most professions in Florida are regulatedby a state, county and/or a city license, ac-cording to the Better Business Bureau andthe Florida Department of Business andProfessional Regulation.

Unlicensed professionals typically lackthe proper qualifications required of a li-cense and will bid a price much lower thanthat of a licensed professional just to getthe job, the Better Business Bureau says.

Unlicensed activity is against the law.The Better Business Bureau and FloridaDepartment of Business and ProfessionalRegulation take unlicensed activity very se-riously, because it threatens the safety ofFlorida’s consumers as well as takes awaybusiness from licensed professionalsthrough the state.

Those allowing unlicensed contractorsto perform services also run the risk ofbeing fined or arrested.

The Better Business Bureau and theDepartment of Business and ProfessionalRegulation hear from consumers all overFlorida who have been victimized by unli-censed persons in various professions.

Consumers complain they’ve receivedsubstandard services and, in some cases, that the contractor ran off the with theirmoney without doing any work.

Here are some reasons to hire a licensedprofessional:

• A licensed person has the required ed-ucation, experience, insurance andqualifications to obtain a license. They mustpass a competency examination beforepracticing.

• Many licensed individuals arescreened for prior criminal history.

• Regulatory agencies can disciplineand even revoke a license if the persondoes not live up to professional standards. This provides a strong incentive for the li-censee to do good work.

• You may be able to sue the licensee incivil court for problems related to the workdone.

The best way to avoid becoming the vic-tim of unlicensed activity is to verifylicenses and check references before youhire a professional.

Consumers can verify professional li-censes online at MyFloridaLicense.com, orby calling (850) 487-1395.

Consumers may be especially vulnerablein the aftermath of a hurricane or other se-vere weather.

It is not uncommon for out-of-town

storm chasers to solicit business after amajor weather event. Storm chasers maynot have proper licensing for your area andmay offer quick fixes or make big promisesto which they won’t deliver, according tothe Better Business Bureau.

The Better Bureau advises consumers to:• Verify the contractor is permitted to

do work in your township or municipality.• Seek out a contractor, rather than re-

sponding to sales calls on the phone ordoor-to-door pitches.

• Check the credentials of anyone in-specting your roof.

• Obtain three or four quotes for workbeing done, and pay the company, not theindividual, for the work that was done.

• Read all of the fine print in the con-tract, and be sure you understand it.

• Be wary of any company requiring up-front payments.

• Resist high-pressure sales tactics suchas the “good deal” you’ll get only if you hirethe contractor on the spot.

Be sure to get a written contract thatspecifies the price, the work to be done, the amount of liability insurance coveragemaintained by the contractor, and a timeframe.

Require a copy of their current certifi-cate of insurance. Pay by credit card, ifpossible; you may have additional protec-tion if there’s a problem.

Check that the contractor’s vehicle hassigns or markings on it with the businessname, phone number and the appropriatestate license plates.

For more information on how to findproperly licensed professionals, includingan easy to use checklist, visit BBB.org/west-florida/licensing.

untrue is the perception that all Hispanicsin Florida are Cuban, she said.

Along I-4, for instance, Puerto Ricans arethe largest Hispanic demographic.

One of the most intensely fought overgroups will be the millennials. The genera-tion from about age 18 to age 24 is going tobe as influential as the baby boomers werein their day, she said.

“I see a little bit more movement (of mil-lennials) back to the Republicans,” MacManussaid. “A lot of that is over fiscal issues.”

To date, 12 candidates have announcedamong Republicans including formerFlorida Gov. Jeb Bush and Donald Trump.

MacManus was dismissive of Trump. And, her first encounter with Gov. Scott

Walker, who has not officially announced asa candidate, was not impressive.

“I was rather disappointed,” she said, though she will give him another chance. “Ididn’t think he’d had a lot of sleep.”

Bush’s launch of his campaign, however, was masterfully done, she said. He spoke toa crowd that reflected the diversity inMiami and across the country, dispelling thecriticism that Republican crowds are mostlywhite.

MacManus also noted that theRepublican field of candidates is more di-verse than Democrats running forpresident.

Bush’s first speech as a candidate struckan anti-Washington tone, MacManus said. She expects he will tout his economicrecord in Florida and his education reforms,as well.

The question MacManus is asked mostoften is who will win Florida’s Republicanprimary, Bush or Sen. Marco Rubio.

She doesn’t have a crystal ball on thatone.

“So much is volatile,” she said. She does predict that the 2016 presiden-

tial race will be the most expensive ever, and Tampa Bay will be in the thick of it.

“This is really going to a happeningspot,” MacManus said.

However, local and state candidates mayface challenges because national races, includ-ing Congressional elections, will compete fordonations and media attention. They could be“starved out a bit,” MacManus said.

On the Democratic side, formerSecretary of State Hillary Clinton is thefront-runner for the party’s nomination. ButMacManus said, “It is surprising to see the in-terest in (Sen.) Bernie Sanders…People findhim very interesting.”

She also has been surprised that thereare women voters who like Sen. ElizabethWarren “but wouldn’t vote for HillaryClinton.”

Some of Clinton’s support comes fromwomen voters who believe she got a “rawdeal” in 2008 when then-candidate Sen.Barack Obama won the nomination.

But there is another reason.“She would be the first woman presi-

dent,” MacManus said. “People love peoplethat can break the mold. That’s why Obamagot elected. He broke one of the biggest bar-riers – race.”

Voter turnout will be crucial for bothparties.

“The emphasis, and rightly so, will be toget people to vote,” she said. Though extend-ed and early voting is popular, the trendhasn’t boosted overall turnout, she added.“Both parties have felt the sting of badturnout.”

With the election about 17 months away, residents should be prepared for campaignsthat likely will be fought through socialmedia, scare tactics and negative advertise-ments, MacManus said.

“That’s kind of sad,” she said. But on the plus side, Florida and Tampa

Bay will be the place for politics.“Thank God, I don’t live in North

Dakota,” MacManus said. “How very dull.”

PRESIDENT, from page 1A

We’ll wait to see what they offer and pro-ceed from there.”

Prior to the school board’s vote,Whitfield recounted the park’s history. Hedescribed a “handshake” agreement nearly50 years ago between Hercules Powder Co.and the school district that the park wouldbe used for children and for education butnot for commercial use.

At one time Hercules Powder Co. wasthe largest employer in Zephyrhills. Thecompany processed pine stumps into rosin, turpentine and pine oil on about 80 acres. The property later became sites for thepark, Zephyrhills High School and WoodlandElementary School.

Some residents had feared that a gas sta-tion would be built on a corner lot at U.S301 and County Road 54, adjacent to thepark. But a $1.7 million bid from Del LagoVentures Inc., affiliated with Race TracPetroleum Inc., was rejected.

Belleair Development Group, with a $1.6million bid, also lost out.

“Something needs to be worked out, be-cause we in Zephyrhills need that (park),”said resident Fern Williams. “I’m not evenseeing what your vision is with a gas stationon that corner.”

In April, school officials announced plansto put the corner parcel on the market forcommercial sale. Zephyrhills’ City Councilpreviously agreed to rezone the site withexpectations that the school board wouldconsider leasing the remaining acres toZephyrhills for $1 a year for 100 years.

City and school officials have somewhatdifferent recollections on what happenednext.

Gadd said as far back as 2011, the schoolboard raised the possibility of a lease, butcity officials rejected the offer.

Following the recent rezoning of the cor-ner lot, he presented the lease option to the

school board but never heard back fromZephyrhills for follow-up. City officials saidthe lease agreement would have precludedthem from applying for grants. Buying theproperty was the best option, they said.

The city planned to use several fundingsources including Community DevelopmentBlock Grants and the Penny for Pasco pro-gram. The bid also included the right to sellabout 2 acres, south of the corner lot. Cityofficials said, if they needed the funds fromthe lot’s sale, it would be developed for apurpose compatible with the park.

The future of the park has been underdiscussion since Pasco County’s decision toclose it nearly four years ago. County offi-cials said the county could no longer affordto operate and maintain the park and itsaquatic center.

Under a prior agreement, the park had tobe used or returned to the school district.

School officials estimate that Zephyrhillscould receive about $50,000 annually inproperty and gas tax revenues if the dealgoes through with Gh&G.

Zephyrhills’ officials dispute those num-bers, saying the city will receive very littlefrom gas taxes.

They peg property tax revenues at about$6,000 a year.

Gadd said school officials are in agree-ment with Zephyrhills on the goal toreopen the park and see the pool againhosting swim meets.

During the long closure, he said the poolhas been vandalized and homeless peoplehave been found living in the woods.

Law enforcement has been called thereon several occasions.

“To me its sad to see the pool has falleninto disrepair,” Gadd said.

Zephyrhills’ City Manager Steve Spina re-mains hopeful of a good outcome.

“I understand their position,” he said ofthe school board’s vote. “I think it’s good ifthey can work it out, and we get the bulk ofthe land. It’s a win-win.”

Summer is often known as “trauma sea-son” among public health and medicalprofessionals, so The Shriners Hospitals forChildren and NASCAR Driver David Raganhave joined forces to help reduce the risksof childhood injuries.

Summer is a time when serious injuriesand deaths dramatically increase amongchildren, according to a news release fromThe Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Statistics show that 40 percent of all in-jury-related emergency room visits and 42percent of all injury-related deaths amongchildren happen between May and August, the release states.

“I know a fun-filled summer day canturn into tragedy within seconds when anaccident occurs,” Ragan said, in the release.“Shriners Hospitals and I want to providefamilies with simple ways to reduce the riskof childhood injuries so kids can enjoy asafe summer.”

As experts in the treatment of pediatricorthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuriesand burns, Shriners Hospitals for Childrenprovides critical, surgical and rehabilitativecare to children, regardless of the families’ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children– Tampa urges parents and caregivers to re-mind kids of these simple precautions tokeep them injury-free this summer:

• Swing sitting down.• Slide feet first, one child at a time.• Do not push or shove others on the

playground.• Always swim with an adult or a friend.• Wear a life jacket when near the water.• Never play on or around lawn mowers.• Do not play around fire pits, campfires

or grills.“Sustaining a serious injury can be a life-

altering event for a child,” said Dale Stauss, chairman of the Board of Directors for

Shriners Hospitals for Children. “We see pa-tients every day with injuries caused byaccidents and we are committed to raisingawareness about how to stay safe this sum-mer.

The Florida Department of Health alsoencourages safety at home during the sum-mer.

It is asking Floridians to make theirhomes safer by taking steps to prevent thefive leading causes of home injury: falls; poi-sonings; fires and burns;choking/suffocation; and drowning.

These tips will help make your homesafe for people of all ages:

• Install smoke alarms and be sure theyhave working batteries. The alarms shouldbe installed in each bedroom, outside eachsleeping area and on every level of thehome. They also should be tested monthlyto ensure the batteries are good.

• Be sure that fire extinguishers are avail-able on every level of the home and thateach household member knows how to usethem;

• Cover all unused outlets with safetyplugs.

• Check outlets you are using, to be surethey are not being overloaded.

• Install child locks on all cabinets usedto store dangerous items such as medicine, cleaners and matches.

• Be sure that you pool, hot tub or anyother body of water is surrounded by 5-footfencing with self-locking and self-closinggates.

• Develop, discuss and practice an evacu-ation plan in case of fire or otheremergency.

• Equip your home with an emergencysupply kit. Visit www.ready.gov/ for a list ofsuggested materials.

Keep a special eye on young child. Theyare active, mobile and curious, making therisk of an accident high.

Have a fun, but safe summerSpecial to The Laker/Lutz News

On average, people spend more thantwo hours daily on such household activi-ties as cleaning and organizing, according tothe 2013 American Time Use Survey by theBureau of Labor and Statistics. But there’s noneed to spend the bulk of precious freetime achieving a spotless home.

Here are a few tips for making once te-dious chores easy and effective.

Clean Kitchen The kitchen often attracts the most

mess. However, cleaning as you go can keepit looking spick and span.

Fill your sink with hot soapy water whenyou start dinner. Place used pots, pans anddishes in the filled sink to soak while youeat. Never give sauces, oils or spices a chanceto sit around — wipe up spills immediately.

Cleaning a dirty oven is easy when youline the bottom with a nonstick oven liner.Simply wipe the liner with a paper towel, place it in the dishwasher and reuse — noadditional scrubbing required.

Bacteria can feed on food put down thedrain and on what’s left on dishes, accord-ing to a study conducted by Dr. CharlesGerba, a.k.a. “Dr. Germ.” Your dirty kitchensink has more bacteria than your toilet seatand is actually the prime place for E. coli tolive and grow. To sanitize your garbage dis-posal, pour one half cup of baking sodadown the drain followed by one cup ofwhite vinegar. Place the stopper in the sinkand allow the solution to work its magic fora few minutes. Rinse with boiling water.

Spotless BathroomA regular vanity wipe down is a must,

but an additional way to keep these areaslooking spotless is with the right fixtures. Some faucets now feature Microban antimi-crobial protection built into the faucetfinish, a technology that helps inhibit thegrowth of stain- and odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew. For example, the newMoen Vale collection, features Microban aswell as Spot Resist finish, which helps resistfingerprints and water spots to maintain abrilliant finish.

If you have a cloth shower curtain, throw it in the laundry, then hang it outsideto dry. Bathroom humidity can make fabricslook limp quickly, so swap out towels fre-quently for a fluffy and fresh look.

De-Cluttered Living SpacesAccording to a recent survey, 28 percent

of consumers said they only straighten up afew times each week. The survey, conductedby Moen, also found that most homeownersdon’t strive for a perfectly organized home;but they would if there was more time avail-able to devote to organizing.

To find more time, conduct a five-minutesweep of the house nightly before bed, tak-ing a laundry basket with you. Placeanything in the basket that doesn’t belongin that particular room, and then put thebasket contents back in their proper place.

By regularly taking a few moments out ofyour week to clean and organize, you caneasily have a fresh feeling home with mini-mal elbow grease required.

By Michael [email protected]

When Jeff Sproat was offered a chanceto play a golf simulator a few years ago, hewasn’t interested. He was a real golfer whoplayed real courses. What interest could hehave in a simulation of the game he loved?

Then, he tried it.“I ended up spending about three hours

in there. I got hooked,” Sproat recalled.Years later, it’s become more than his

hobby. It’s his business. Sproat is the owner of Golfer’s Grail

Indoor Golf & Tap, 10019 N. Dale MabryHighway, Suite 100, in Tampa.

With four simulators, he’s spent the pastcouple of years encouraging people whoare skeptical of the concept, like he was, togive it a try.

There are many aspects of the indoorgolfing simulation that mirror the outsidegame, Sproat said.

Customers bring their own golf clubsand use them for different shots, just likethey would on any course. They use realballs. They swing as hard as they would out-side. And they can play just about any gameyou’d find at a golf club or tournament, in-cluding driving contests, closest-to-the-pincompetitions and even target golf games. And the game is scored the same way, too.

Still, there are important differences, hesaid.

Golfers are competing on simulations ofreal courses and some imagined ones — 66in all, not counting five putt-putt coursesand a program that lets players smash win-dows for fun.

When they hit the ball, it actually makescontact with a screen onto which thecourse is projected. While they’re playing,LED sensors track the club swing, and audi-ble sensors track the ball. That data providesan estimate of the accuracy and power ofthe shot, and the results are displayed byshowing the ball either landing in a pre-ferred spot, or somewhere else that reveals

flaws in the previous swing. The simulator is accurate enough to

make golfers better at the real game, saidSproat, who plays with a single-digit handi-cap. Since practice is what improvestechnique, the simulator allows players toget in extra rounds.

Golfer’s Grail isn’t designed to replaceanyone’s outside golfing experience. It’ssupposed to supplement those rounds andallow players to get in the practice timethey might not get otherwise.

“Every golfer wants to be better. Theyknow that they can be better,” Sproat said.“For the avid golfer, it’s more golf.”

It’s actually more golf with a few enhance-ments. If a player wants a mulligan, or just toreplay a hole over and over, it can be done witha couple of buttons on the console. A round of

golf that takes four or five hours outside can bedone in less than an hour inside. There’s nodress code, they sell beer and wine a few stepsfrom where players swing, and food can be de-livered from neighboring restaurants.

And while you might only spend timewith the people in your foursome duringyour round outside, everyone can be part ofa gallery of sorts inside, socializing andwatching all the participants.

“In here you can play at whatever paceyou’re comfortable,” Sproat said. “The club-house and the golf course are together.”

The golf courses draw a lot of attentionfrom customers, Sproat said.

The owner himself got in some real golfat Northdale last week, then took a fewswings at the challenging 12th hole at theAugusta National Golf Club (home of the

Masters Golf Tournament) on the simulatorthat afternoon.

It’s a day of golf that couldn’t be accom-plished in real life, but pretty simple tomanage with a program that stays loyal tothe courses they’re modeled after.

Sproat has played a little from everycourse on the simulator, and said they’re ac-curate to the real-life counterparts he’s triedout in real life.

The most popular ones are Augusta, TPCSawgrass in Ponta Vedra Beach and thePebble Beach Golf Links in California.

And while the players aren’t actually atthose locations, they won’t get any closer tothe courses without airfare, time off fromwork and a hard-to-get tee time.

“It is the next best thing, because you ac-tually are hitting the ball. You’re playing theshots. When it’s uphill, you have to hit itharder; when it’s downhill, you have to ac-count for that,” Sproat said.

While regular golfers are a big part of hiscustomer base, he particularly enjoys bring-ing the game to new people.

Sproat has been hitting the links for near-ly 50 years, but he knows that many peoplewho try out the simulators don’t play at all.Fathers with younger children can spendtime trying out courses together, and dis-abled players can do things that wouldn’tbe practical on a real course.

Golfer’s Grail works with veteransgroups, and that sometimes includes am-putees being able to get in a round or two.

Expanding the game to those who mightnot get to enjoy it otherwise is a big plus fora guy who’s been playing since he was 8years old.

“I love it. That’s probably the best feelingyou can have,” Sproat said.

An hour of golf at Golfer’s Grail costs be-tween $27 and $37, depending on the timeand day. That cost is split among all players.

The venue is available for individuals, groups and charity tournaments. For moreinformation, call (813) 969-2100 or visitGolfersGrail.net.
