Alpha Achievers give back to the Howard Co. communitySubmitted by Bro. David H. Barrett and Bro. Brandon Barrett

Alpha Achievers from Long Reach High School (LRHS) work the donated book table from which books were distributed for free. The books were collected during a well-organized drive at the school. Bro. Harvey Moran is the KPL advisor at Long Reach.

Bro. David H. Barrett (left), Alpha Achievers co-founder; Bro. Bran-don Barrett (2nd from left), share a moment with the Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County; along with Hammond High School Alpha Achievers president–elect, Elijah Davis, who led the groceries donation drive. Bro. Brandon Barrett is the KPL Advisor at Hammond.

On May 14, the Alpha Achievers of Hammond hosted their first Induction and Senior Recogni-tion Ceremony. The event also included a potluck dinner. It was a grand celebration that included the support of the Achievers and their parents. At the event, graduating seniors received a membership certificate and cords to wear during their graduation ceremony.

The Alpha Achievers at LRHS also conducted a clothing drive. Sixteen Achievers graduated this year (2013) and all of them are headed to four-year colleges; the first time none of the graduates is starting at a two-year college. Thirty-two Achievers were enrolled in Advanced Placement courses. Those who took and passed the AP exam and earned a score of 3 (out of 5) or better, will get college credit for the course in most U.S. colleges and universities.

Some of the groceries collected by the Alpha Achievers at Hammond that were donated to the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County.
